Infidelity, unfaithfulness, and modesty outline the surface of the play Betrayal written by Harold Pinter. From afar the relationships between the trio of characters seems normal but; when taking a deeper look, the correlations are noticeably dysfunctional. The three main characters, Emma, Jerry and Robert interact kindly, never seem to interrupt one another, ask innocent questions and do not, generally, inspect over much the answers. They help each other over the occasional awkward moments and talk when necessary. She no longer exudes this strong woman image but rather takes on a weaker demeanor. We see this powerless image of her in several scenes when meeting with Jerry she constantly needs to be reassured of his love. At the beginning of the play in Spring 1977 where Emma and Jerry are sharing drinks at the pub, she is very emotional. Her feelings for Jerry during this scene are evident as she asks, "Ever think of me?" and "You think of me sometimes?" (Pinter 17). Her insecurity and low self–esteem shines brightly in this encounter with her ex–lover. During that first scene Emma confesses to Jerry that Robert has been cheating on her and that "he's had other women for years." (Pinter 25) Yet she insists on feeling hurt and does not feel guilty for her mirrored actions. In scene 4, when Jerry comes to visit Robert and Emma at their house, upon leaving Emma breaks away and cries quietly on Robert's shoulder. She seems overwhelmed with all of the interactions. At this point in the play Robert knows of Jerry and Emma's affair but Jerry has no idea that he is aware. There was a point in time when I was hurt. It was emotional so there weren't any physical marks for evidence. I had been hurt by the words and actions of those close to me. There was a quote I saw that said, "The saddest part about betrayal is that is always comes from the ones you believe were loyal." That quote lived true for me. Betrayal comes around but only from the ones you thought were loyal. It's hard for me to trust anyone, but the pain should wear off in the night. Metaphorically speaking, of course. My guard was put down, and I was hit. The cannonball struck me in the area where many before me had been hurt: my heart. Now I was in disbelief because I couldn't trust my instincts for an extended period of time. Who was this cannonball? Betrayal and trust During adolescence, teenagers want to become independent and often times do not tell their parents where they are off to in the evening. They leave their parents in the dust, who await their arrival in the night if it is past curfew. Teenagers make irresponsible decisions because their pre–frontal cortex is not fully developed. Neuroscientists have determined that the orbitofrontal and anterior cingulate cortex in our brains regulates our choices (Nauert, 2011). There is a 60% difference between drug use among children of intact families and children of drug users (Black, 2016). Divorce leads to disaster and the numbers are parallel there as well. It is incredible how a parent can condone children easily if they are honest. David states, "I am packing an overnight bag for him and look for a sweater in his backpack. I do not find the sweater, but instead discover a small bag of marijuana" (56). Parents can never really tell where their teenager is off to, because they lie, and the naive parents bite the bait. The bag of marijuana is a metaphor for a can of worms because once Nic is exposed to marijuana, it leads him to try more drugs as he grows up. Hamlet kills Polonius and Gertrude becomes scared as to what is going to happen with Hamlet. Claudius betrays her trust by taking advantage of it and takes matter into his own hands. Claudius solution to the problem is to have Hamlet sent to England, where he is going to be safe from the law and will not have to deal with any consequences for his actions. " O Gertrude, come away! In "The Tragedy of Julius Caesar", Brutus gives the final stab in the assassination of Caesar. Caesar shows feelings of betrayal when Brutus is about to engage in the action that ended his life. William Shakespeare leaves some sense of wonder about why Caesar felt so abandoned. This leaves Brutus to be the only one to betray. However, that is not completely true. Have you ever been in an uncompromising situation where you felt betrayed, had a lack of freedom, and was stuck feeling miserable? Well, this short but lyrical poem gives an inside look at how a woman would feel being forced into a situation against her wishes. This poem is about a woman who travels by boat, with wine, to a place she is not looking forward to which caused her to have a lack of rest. How would someone feel if they have known someone their entire life and all of a sudden they turn their back on them? Tally Youngblood managed to hurt Shay, Corey, and Paris's feelings in the book, Uglies, by Scott Westerfeld. Tally struggles to decide what to do when faced with difficult decisions and this causes her to have a weaker relationship with her friends. She would get confused at the thought of what would be the correct thing to do, and whether it was what she wanted to do, when she was faced with challenges throughout the book. The people living in the city and the "pretties" make it clear that anyone that doesn't change into a pretty wouldn't be accepted into their society. Themes in the Tempest Trust is one of the hardest things to acquire, but fairly easy to lose. Putting ones trust into the wrong person could even lead to deception and regret. In the play The Tempest, by William Shakespeare, we witness as Prospero makes that grave mistake of putting his trust into his brother, Antonio. After being betrayed by his own flesh the only thing that was on Prospero's mind was revenge. However, later on in the play he realizes that revenge is not always the best option and forgiveness can go long way. Betrayal is something that many people encounter. John Gottman explains, "I believe that by understanding the dynamics of trust and betrayal, we can work to make relationships more trusting. Betrayal is a theme of modern life. It has been around since the beginning of time. It is also a common theme in the works of William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare is viewed as the greatest writer in the English language. He has lots of works that contain many different themes. Betrayal, an occurring theme in 3 of his works, common during Shakespeare's days. It has been a very popular theme throughout literature. Betrayal is viewed as lies, deceit and even duplicity. Shakespeare's writings give us a view of the real world and real feelings. In "Julius Caesar" by Shakespeare, the theme is a betrayal tragedy. Julius Caesar was a highly respected general and was a part of the triumvirate of the Roman Empire. He was constantly fighting wars and winning new territories. He was becoming very much loved by the roman people. He even shared wealth with the people of Rome, unlike his fellow senate partners. He had a best man named Marc Antony, and a friend named Brutus. Members of the triumvirate seen how loved and powerful Caesar had become. They felt Julius was threatening the tradition of the senate and Rome. While this was happening, a conspiracy grew. The conspiracy was ultimately to kill Caesar before he became too powerful. Cassius, a jealous conspirator, strongly urged Brutus to join in on the conspiracy to kill Caesar. Brutus consciously thought about this decision, he would also think about the "good" of Rome. Brutus decides to join in on the conspiracy. Beware the ides of March (March 15). They conspire to lead Julius to the Theatre of Pompey, and each of the 60 members of the senate stabbed Caesar. The last stab came from Brutus, this scene defines betrayal tragedy. With the last stab comes Julius Caesar's last words, "Et Tu Brute" (even you Brutus?). From this scene and his last words, the definition of betrayal is set. Brutus believes the murder was good for Rome. It is difficult to tell whether he felt remorse for killing Julius. Brutus was easily persuaded by Cassius, which resulted in betrayal. Love, Loss, and Betrayal

I can feel myself slipping, falling into the dark abyss. My mind whirls as I listen to a cacophony of noise rush around me. Then I feel the frigid water envelope me and it stings like knives burrowing their way into my skin, piercing every inch of me. I try to breath but the water clogs my throat and threatens to drown me. Then it all stops and I feel the sunlight filter through the icy water and brush my fingertips. As if it is telling me that I will be alright. This is what I felt like when my heart got broken by the person I believed to be my true love. The dark abyss is depression and the drowning is the waterfall of tears. While the knives are the pain you feel, and the noise is the sound of your heart shattering into a million pieces as you read the text that tells you it's all over. But the sunlight is your family and friends coming to comfort you and to tell you that everything will be alright. This essay is my story of how I found love, lost that love, and was betrayed by a friend.
