CET CHINESE STUDIES

INTERNSHIPS IN BEIJING & SHANGHAI Spring, Summer, Fall 2015

It’s important to gain international internship experience because the world is looking for employees that are willing to adapt. Only through an international experience can you achieve those skills because you are immersed in a different work culture and learn different work ethics and ways of thinking. This knowledge is invaluable… — Tyra Skinner, University of Texas at Austin, Shanghai Spring 2014

Internships in

China

BEIJING Students fall in love with Beijing. It’s here that they can put their finger on the pulse of China’s political and social scenes, establish guanxi (connections) with the country’s movers and shakers, all while learning standard Mandarin. Sample internship locations: Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots China Development Brief Magic Hospital for Children Beijing LGBT Center Women’s Watch China Huiling Center for People with Mental Disabilities Beijing Kundun Law Firm Blue Ocean Network Satellite TV Little Adoption Shop Animal Shelter Save the Children

SHANGHAI Shanghai’s entrepreneurial spirit makes it a natural location to pursue an internship in any field—from business to law, fashion to education. CET is based at Donghua University’s downtown campus, which means that students have easy access to all corners of this vibrant city. Sample internship locations: American Consulate General Architect@Work China Greentech Initiative Ernst & Young Heart to Heart Shanghai Le Royal Méridien Shanghai ParkwayHealth China Praxis Language Shanghai Repertory Theater Turner Broadcasting

LEARNING CHINESE CET has operated intensive Chinese language programs for over 30 years and is known for its superiority in the language classroom. Experienced instructors, intensive curricula and outof-classroom practice ensure that CET students embark on their internships with solid language skills.

ACADEMICS: UNDERSTANDING CHINA Courses in Chinese history, economics, political science, film and environmental studies take full advantage of the host city. A history course in Shanghai might lead students to the Propaganda Poster Arts Center. A philosophy course in Beijing might take students to a Buddhist temple to visit with monks.

EXCURSIONS: SEEING THE HOST CITY The programs use longstanding connections to arrange excursions for students. Shanghai students might learn the art of deciphering hidden historical signs, walk through the disappearing old city, or tour secret villas not included in any tour book. In Beijing, students might interact with artists in the 798 Art District, meet with prominent journalists, or visit a traditional Chinese medicine clinic.

FULL SUPPORT FROM STAFF On-site staff teams help students adjust to life in China. Leading those teams are the CET Directors, who inspire with their knowledge, experience and China savvy. Jeremy Friedlein (Shanghai), a CET staff member for 10 years and resident of China 20, shares his wide network of connections with students. Dr. David Moser (Beijing) holds a PhD in Chinese philosophy, served as host at China Central Television, and contributes regularly to the China blogosphere.

Roommates

“THE BEST PART OF THE PROGRAM” – CET alumni Each CET China student shares a dormitory room with a Chinese roommate. Many student and roommate pairs quickly become friends, and students soon find that

their roommates are goldmines of insider information— where to get the best bowl of noodles, how to create an account on Weibo (China’s Twitter), what streets to avoid at rush hour.

I didn’t realize I could develop such an incredible, lasting bond with someone who grew up in a place so different from my home. It was more than just comparing each other’s cultures. My roommate and I realized we had so many similar life experiences. We still keep in contact to this day, and it’s a friendship I will treasure forever. — Lauren Dinsmore, Colorado College, Beijing Spring 2013
