2 tidings | fall 2022
Dear Friends,
Welcome to our latest edition of Tidings! I am pleased to share with you that our Angels in grades 6 through 12 are busy here on campus – in their classes and enjoying their adventures in the arts, athletics, activities, and service programs. These pages include lots of news for you to enjoy. Please be sure to take a look at both of our AHA commencement celebrations –our 2022 Senior Class and the inaugural Middle School graduation.
Excitement is building on campus with the long-awaited renovation of our school auditorium and music wing. With construction well underway, we look forward to completion of these state-of-the-art spaces in the spring of 2023. The auditorium serves every Angel as an important center for school assemblies, liturgies, and the performing arts. Check out how you can become a part of this legacy as we race to the finish!
Also included in this issue is our Annual Report to Donors. Please know how grateful all of us at Holy Angels are for your ongoing interest and support of our programs. If not for the gifts of our alumnae, families – past and present – and our many benefactors and friends, we would not be able to continue the work begun by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879 in Fort Lee.
In this our 143rd year as a school, we remain dedicated to the SSND mission to educate young women. As Holy Angels continues to build strength upon strength, this mission remains paramount and our school’s accomplishments unrivaled. We look forward to a future that is bright and secure and thank you for being a part of our living history as in the words of our foundress, Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger, we continue to “Trust and Dare.”

Eighty-eight participants and 165 dinner guests attended the inaugural Academy of the Holy Angels Golf & Tennis Outing on September 26. The autumn day was so spectacular that even a passing sprinkle brought a rainbow to those gathered at the Hackensack Golf Club in Oradell. The AHA Parents’ Athletic Association hosted this activity-packed day that concluded with AHA Athletic Hall of Fame inductions for softball/basketball star Dawn Pikarsky Gillies (AHA ’92) and lacrosse standout Melanie Welch (AHA ’17).
Event Chair Maura Corcoran (AHA ’86) said the event was hugely successful, thanks to generous sponsors and parents whose daughters are involved in the Academy’s athletic programs. Proceeds will benefit AHA’s athletic programs and facilities.

Join Us as We Raise the Curtain and Complete our State-of-the-Art Auditorium!
Angels have been making memories in AHA’s auditorium since the Demarest campus opened in 1965. At this writing, a sweeping top-to-bottom transformational renovation is underway. When the project began in June 2022, members of the Holy Angels community immediately missed this important gathering space, where the entire school community comes together for Mass, presentations, Open Houses, concerts, dramas, and more. Temporarily, these large gatherings are held in the gym.
Now is our moment to join together to transform this essential space into a stateof-the-art multi-use center, so it can once again become a point of immense pride for all of us. Our reimagined auditorium is at the very heart of AHA. This is where academics, spirituality, and community converge; the focal point for everyone who studies, works, and visits AHA.
The state-of-the-art performance center will be breathtaking. Updates include new acoustics, lighting, seats, stage, floor, and technology. It is designed with the flexibility to meet all of our needs. Visit www.holyangels.org/takeaseat for details on the project and how you can help us bring this to completion. A few opportunities remain available to name seats and donate toward this major undertaking. We are aiming for this project to be complete by our spring 2023 Grandparents’ Day celebration.
We need your help in our race to the finish! Want to learn more? Call Patricia Brussel, Director of Advancement –201-768-7822 x211.

Artist Gian Lee Wins National Gold Medal
Gian Lee (AHA ’22) earned a National Gold Medal in the 2022 Scholastic Art & Writing Competition. Gian, who specializes in surrealism, was recognized for her painting, “Photosynthesis,” which depicts the artist’s shadow cast onto lush foliage.
“‘Photosynthesis’ was inspired by a photograph that I took in the bushes and plants growing behind the studio where I made art over the summer (of 2021),” she explained. “I feel very honored to earn national recognition for my art since there are so many other talented artists.”
Christine DeGennaro, who taught Gian at AHA, appreciates her former student’s technical excellence and willingness to pursue artistic experiments.
Gian now attends the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University.
Academy Starts Season with Largest Team in History
Jenny Sweet, head coach of AHA’s acclaimed dance team, started 2022-23 with energy, optimism, and 41 members. This is her largest group since the dance program was organized 12 years ago with Sweet at the helm. Her first team had just 14 dancers.
This summer, the team attended the Universal Dance Association Camp, where the varsity, JV, and middle school teams all qualified for Nationals. In addition, six Angels were
named All-Americans and received an invitation to participate in the 2023 London New Year’s Day Parade. AHA’s honorees are Katie Fragola, Jordyn Wynn, Isabella McMahon, Maddie Krol, Emily Kho, and Annabella de Leon.
Varsity dancer Milena Hiza, JV dancer Chloe Kwon, and middle school dancer Cristyn Lindsay brought home the Pin it Forward Award for their work ethic and overall passion in each class. The UDA staff also recognized the Academy for outstanding leadership and energy.

Ellie Sawyer Plans Career in
Opera
Vocalist Ellie Sawyer (AHA ’24) recently made an exciting decision. She completed Westminster Choir College’s Solo Vocal Artist Program with a strengthened determination to pursue a career as an opera singer.
“This experience deepened my passion as a vocalist and reminded me why I love what I do so much, and made me excited to pursue it. I also learned some very helpful tools like the international phonetic alphabet which helps with singing in different languages,” Ellie shared.
She is now auditioning for a winter program at the Metropolitan Opera, and decided to study German with the goal of singing in Germany one day.
Ellie sings with the AHA Concert Choir and Seraphima (the Academy’s selective a cappella ensemble), and plays for the AHA Handbell Choir. She is a member of the Tri-M Honor Society.
Chloe Ibrahim Earns Rising Star Award
Just three days after graduation, Chloe Ibrahim (AHA ’22) received a Rising Star Award from the Paper Mill Playhouse. She was recognized for outstanding student achievement for her role as student director of the spring production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”
AHA’s award-winning director, alumna Katharine Collins, who provided overall direction of the musical comedy, said she “is extremely proud of Chloe and could not have done the show without her. Her organization, passion, and commitment to ‘Spelling Bee’ is what made it such a wonderful success.”
Chloe is currently studying biology at the University of Washington – Seattle, where she planned to join the university’s theater crew.
Violinist Performs in Hawaii, Helps Lead NY Youth Symphony
Faith Youn’s expert musicianship and abiding love for playing her violin regularly earn her invitations to perform in thrilling venues. During the summer of 2022, this member of the Class of 2023 traveled to Hawaii to take part in the Pacific Music Institute run by the Hawaii Youth Symphony and National Orchestral Institute + Festival. Faith performed at the Hawaii Convention Center and various senior living homes in Oahu. The group presented classical pieces and traditional works of music from Hawaii.
Faith was also named principal second violinist for the New York Youth Symphony’s fall concert cycle and the assistant principal second violinist for the winter and spring concert cycles of the 2022-23 season.
Cho & Romano Sign with College Dance Teams
Two of Academy of the Holy Angels’ newest alumnae (Class of ’22) are continuing their dance careers at the college level. Ella Cho signed with Villanova and Nicole Romano signed with Penn State. AHA Head Dance Coach Jenny Sweet organized the June 8 signing ceremony.
Cho was captain of the AHA Varsity Dance Team during her senior year. In 2021-22, she and her team earned their second consecutive sweep at the New Jersey Cheer and Dance State Championships (2021, 2022). At UDA Nationals, Cho led her team to a silver medal in small varsity hip-hop (second out of 37) and a bronze medal in small varsity pom (third out of 57). This Angel was instrumental in her team’s silver (second out of 56) and bronze medals (third out of 86) at the 2020 UDA Nationals. Cho is an AHA legacy. Her mother, Dorothy Kim Cho, graduated from Holy Angels in 1991.
Romano, who took private dance lessons, was also a member of the AHA Varsity Soccer Team. During her senior year, she participated in the Academy’s training program for Eucharistic Ministers. She was commissioned by Bishop Michael Saporito on Feast Day 2021.

Class of ’22 Wins Athletic Honors
Varsity lacrosse and basketball player Emily Danahy (AHA ’22) received the Academy’s prestigious Angel Award in recognition of her exceptional spirit, dedication, and leadership. Danahy was one of six 2022 AHA graduates honored at the Parents’ Athletic Association Spring Sports Awards Dinner.
AHA Athletic Director Patti Gorsuch announced Danahy’s win, noting this Angel’s willingness to give her all to her sports and her teams. Danahy was recognized for her ability to bring her teammates together and her commitment to encouraging younger players. She earned seven varsity letters and honors that include First Team All-County, First Team All-League, and All-State Non-Public Player of the Year awards.
“She never really cared about personal stats or league awards. It was always about the team; about having fun; about doing everything to win,” Gorsuch said.
Tennis star Brooke Hess brought home the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Scholar Athlete Award and the Bergen County Women Coaches Association Scholarship. Hess won two county titles at Second Singles and was First Team All-League, First Team AllCounty, Finalist for NorthJersey.com Girls Tennis Player of the Year, First Team All Non-Public, First Singles Third Team All-Flight, First Team All North Jersey, and First Team All-State. Her team earned two Bergen County Championships. In 2021, she played in the State Singles Semifinals.
Danahy and Hess also had their jerseys retired. Both Angels signed with college teams in 2021. Danahy now plays lacrosse at Siena College. Hess plays tennis for Dartmouth, following in the footsteps of her sister, Ashley Hess (AHA ’19).
Eliza Hoover and Caelan McHugh received the BCWCA Multi-Sport Award.
Hoover ran varsity cross-country and track and played varsity soccer. She was invited to the Meet of Champions and received most valuable player honors as she garnered
All-League and All-County recognition. Hoover also helped AHA win its first Penn Wheel at the Penn Relays. In May 2022, Hoover signed with Gettysburg College, where she is continuing her running career.
McHugh was a member of the varsity soccer, basketball, and track teams. She served as captain of the AHA Soccer Team, and played for a club team. As a junior, and again as a senior, she earned First Team All-League in the Big North Conference. McHugh signed with the University of Rhode Island’s soccer team in 2021.
McHugh also received a PAA scholarship, as did softball player Claire Cook. Cook, who now plays for Providence College, helped AHA reach the state tournament with her excellent pitching and a clutch grand slam.
Big North Student Athlete Awards went to Danahy, Hess, Cook, Hoover, McHugh, and varsity soccer player Julianna Sirico. Sirico is now a member of Franklin & Marshall’s soccer team.
Angel Athletes Sign Letters of Intent
Eliza Hoover and Julianna Sirico (both AHA ’22) signed letters of intent to continue their athletic careers during their college years. Hoover, a varsity track star, now runs for Gettysburg College, where she is pursuing a degree in business, management, and organizations. Sirico, a soccer standout, plays for Franklin and Marshall College and studies applied mathematics. Friends, family, and coaches Megan Delasandro (soccer) and Howard Schuman (track) attended the May 9, 2022 signing ceremony at AHA.

Sweet Sweep for AHA Varsity Tennis
The Academy of the Holy Angels Varsity Tennis Team closed out September 2022 by winning the Bergen County Championship and accomplishing a clean sweep of the singles and doubles titles.
After earning the 2021 county title in the large schools bracket, AHA was moved to the small schools bracket this year. Although the team could not defend its large schools title, the Angels quickly proved they would excel in any bracket. Wins went to Erin Ha, First Singles; Norah Park, Second Singles; Ali Darmanin, Third Singles; Mia Custodio and Eva Cho, First Doubles; and Ella Oaten and Autumn Morrissey, Second Doubles. The varsity team also includes Stephanie Chan, Chaewon “Allison” Chung, and Anna Jang.
“This is a wonderful accomplishment,” AHA Athletic Director Patti Gorsuch stated. “Most amazing is that our girls ran the table, never losing a match during the two-day event.”
AHA Varsity Tennis Coach Meaghan Williams shared, “I am delighted to steer this wonderful group of tenacious young ladies toward the Bergen County Title. Each player and her family has made sacrifices for the team, which I appreciate. On this anniversary of Title IX, it is my honor to represent Holy Angels at the top of Bergen County girls’ tennis.”
June 23, 2022 was the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX, a federal law that barred sex discrimination in the nation’s schools and allowed young women greater access to opportunities in athletics.
Golfers Capture Triple Crown
In May 2022, the varsity golf team completed a lights-out, first-ever undefeated season (14-0 in overall league play) that included an elusive triple crown. The Angels became league champions, Big North champions, and AHA’s first Bergen County and State Sectional champions. The team finished second in the state, and Angelina Kim ’25 finished third in the state as an individual. The team includes Kim, Sharanya Agarwal ’25, Inha Jun ’25, Sidney Chung ’24, and Amelia Shen ’23.
“This has been a very special season and what the girls accomplished this year is amazing,” AHA Varsity Golf Coach Patrick Dunne said. “Since the girls are very young and have years left in their high school careers, we hope our success will continue.”
Dunne and his team were thrilled to post a win over Bergen Tech during the season, since Bergen Tech had not lost a season match in almost two years.
“Our win over Immaculate Heart at Ridgewood Country Club was also special,” he added.

Examining Immigration Issues in South Texas
Several Angels spent a week in June 2022 interacting with migrant families and children in South Texas. Their Mission Awareness Process trip allowed them to learn how the School Sisters of Notre Dame offer support to migrants near the Texas-Mexico border.
Grace Cuttita, Breanna Hetzer, Jackie LaMastra, Raffaela Manoy, Marina Poire, Sydney Ponti, Ava Santoro, and Ava Tripodi worked with Sister Regina Palacios from the SSND Central Pacific Province, AHA Campus Ministry Director Kathleen Sylvester, and AHA Social Studies Department Chair Gail Fair.
In San Antonio, the Angels met three groups of migrant boys at Saint Peter–Saint Joseph Children’s Home.
“Some kids explained how they were lost, and how many days they went without food,” said Marina Poire, the group’s English/Spanish translator. “Some of them were kidnapped and some of them had to run from kidnappers.”
AHA’s travelers also volunteered at the Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen, where several Angels became frustrated when they could not fulfill migrants’ requests for clothes and shoes. Toward the end of their trip, the group prayed at the border wall and visited the Rio Grande.
Angels Advocate for Peace in Ukraine
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is affecting citizens in many nations, including Alexis Mysliwiec and Nicole Yakubov, president and VP, respectively, of AHA’s Slavic-Baltic Cultural Society. During International Week 2022, these Angels led the school in moving prayers for peace that were delivered in Ukrainian and English.
Mysliwiec, founder and president of the SBCSociety, has friends at the border with Ukraine who have been helping thousands of mothers and children.
“My goal is to use my club as a source to connect students and further educate the girls through fundraising and especially through International Night,” she said. The 2022 event helped support the Red Cross International’s work in Ukraine.
“I am Ukrainian and Alexis is Polish, so we are both deeply connected to the current tragedy,” said Yakubov. In addition to prayer, she suggests showing solidarity by attending a peaceful rally, contacting legislators, and signing petitions.
“I am a first-born American from parents from Ukraine so I am deeply connected with my Ukrainian identity,” Yakubov said. “Before COVID, I went to Ukraine almost every summer. The prayer I said in Ukrainian was the National Hymn of Ukraine. It is a very powerful and meaningful prayer for all Ukrainians as the struggle for independence has not yet ceased.”
“Seeing and hearing the experiences of the young, unaccompanied boys at St. Peter–St. Joseph Children’s Home was our first encounter with the dire conditions and reasons why the refugee movement is so large,” Gail Fair said. “While it was both physically and emotionally difficult for us, and we knew we would never know what happens to these refugees, I was so proud of our students. They learned so much and opened their hearts to the needs of others.”
Academy Raises $6,026 for SSND Haiti Fund
At the start of her senior year, Janella Osbourne (AHA ’22) approached AHA Campus Ministry Director Kathleen Sylvester about establishing Solidarity with Haiti to support the Haitian people. By the time Osbourne graduated, the entire Academy had come together to raise $6,026 for the SSND Haiti Fund. Haiti is one of the focus areas for the SSND Atlantic Midwest Province, which is one of AHA’s common missions for 2022-23 along with Hurricane Relief in Puerto Rico.
“Creating Solidarity with Haiti at AHA was my way of helping my people in the best way I can,” Osbourne said. “Recently, Haiti has been going through many hardships and the people need our help now more than ever. After I graduate, I am hoping to bring my ideas with me to wherever I head next to continue the effort to support the Haitian people.”
Charter members of Solidarity with Haiti include Amelia Blanco, Stephanie Chan, Elena DeBari, Angelina Ferolie, Natalia Gonzalez, Jennifer Haemmerle, Thandiwe Laba, Zulemia Noriega, Chloe Rodriguez, and Sophia Chounoune, who is now the organization’s president.

The 104 members of AHA Upper School’s Class of 2022 concluded their years at the Academy on June 3, 2022. The Academy’s 142nd graduating class assembled at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, where The Most Reverend Michael A. Saporito celebrated the Baccalaureate Mass with assistance from Deacon John L. Sylvester.
“These amazing young women could really teach us a few lessons about patience, about resilience, about grace, and about faith,” AHA President Melinda Hanlon said as the graduation ceremony began.
This senior class earned acceptance to some of the nation’s finest institutions of higher learning, including Dartmouth, Princeton, and Yale. In total, the seniors earned $12.4 million in college scholarships and amassed 23,608 service hours.
Madeline Risbud graduated First in Merit and was named commencement speaker, the highest honor AHA can confer upon a graduate. Grace Watson was Second in Merit, and Ria Jani, AHA’s National Merit® Scholarship Finalist, was chosen by her peers to deliver the senior response.
“Be the voice that provokes progress,” Risbud told her peers, speaking of the importance of defining the changes the world needs most, and engaging in respectful dialogue to effect those changes.
Immigration law specialist Emily Bendaña McHale, J.D. (AHA ’02) addressed the Class of 2022 on the 20th anniversary of her own graduation. Bendaña earned her bachelor’s degree at Boston College. She began working in merchandising, but changed careers when she witnessed a friend’s struggle with deportation. Based on her AHA education, she decided to stand up to injustice. She earned her juris doctor from the Elizabeth Haub School of Law, and now works with asylum seekers and individuals seeking status through family petitions.
“Continue to be a voice,” she said, adding a heartwarming shout-out to her best friend and fellow Angel who was present that day.
Jani discussed the challenges of online learning during the height of the pandemic, yet described an overwhelming sense of togetherness. She said she believes the AHA sisterhood will last a lifetime.

“Know that you do not travel the path of life alone. Jesus is walking with you and waiting for you to ask for His guidance along the way,” Koval told the Angels. “We will miss your smiling faces, but we are only a short walk down the breezeway.”
Leyla Ziemba led her class in expressing appreciation for their families. Graduates presented their families with a yellow rose and a personalized message.
Principal Jean Miller from the upper school presented the class to President Hanlon as the school’s leaders prepared to distribute the diplomas. The Angels turned the tassels on their caps to signify their graduation, and sang the alma mater. Eliana Melone delivered the closing prayer before the graduates filed out of the church, ready for the next phase of their education.

Alumnae Reunion 2022
Holy Angels Grads Become Department Chairs & Join Faculty
AHA began the 2022-23 academic year with alumnae in key roles. Stephanie Dowling (AHA ’08) is now chair of the AHA English Department, Kathleen Walsh (AHA ’87) took over as chair of the AHA Religious Studies Department, and Darcy Ottomanelli (AHA ’17) started the year as track coach.
Stephanie Dowling earned her bachelor’s degree from Loyola University Maryland, and a master’s from Seton Hall. She began her career as an English teacher and track coach at Immaculate Conception High School, and joined AHA’s faculty in 2014.
Kathleen Walsh completed her bachelor’s degree at the College of the Holy Cross, and earned her master’s at Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology/Seton Hall University. Before she joined AHA’s religious studies faculty in 2012, Walsh was a manuscript editor specializing in theology, spirituality, and world religious traditions.
Darcy Ottomanelli is a graduate of the University of Southern California/Keck School of Medicine, where she received a master’s in global medicine. She also holds a B.S. in human biology from Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. In 2021, she returned to AHA as a health teacher and track coach. She also choreographs routines for the AHA Gymnastics Team, which she helped
Academy Expresses Appreciation for Retiring Faculty Members
The 2021-22 academic year ended with a fond sendoff for five Holy Angels faculty members, including three department heads, who opted to leave their full-time posts. AHA Religious Studies Department Chair Carol Fay, AHA World Language Department Chair Samira Mady, AHA English Department Chair Nancy Schneberger, basketball/softball coach Susan Liddy, and long-time French and Spanish teacher Marisel LeGoff were honored at a June 2022 luncheon held at Bacari Grill.
AHA President Melinda Hanlon and Principal Jean Miller paid tribute to each individual, by sharing biographical information and humorous anecdotes. All five retirees will receive a personalized brick that will be part of the walkway that leads from the gym to the track. AHA Director of Mission and Ministry Joan Connelly, head of the Sunshine Club, presented each honoree with an AHA camp chair and a yearbook that was signed by faculty and staff members.
organize while she was an Angel.
AHA’s 2022-23 department chairs also include two AHA veterans: Lisa Betti, world languages; and Sharon Jureller, science.
New this year are AHA Interim Dean of Students Jessica Hogan; English teachers Betsy Barbour and Maria Zaorski; French teacher Leila Ben Kilani; religious studies teacher George Maize; and music teacher Brian Kirk. Religious studies teacher Sarah Allen and English teacher Bridget Ryan returned to the Academy’s faculty after teaching in other districts.
Together, these educators logged 181 years of service at the time of their retirement: Liddy, 48; Fay, 46; LeGoff, 20; Mady, 33, and Schneberger, 34. Several of the “retirees” remain involved at Holy Angels on a limited basis.

Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Academy of the Holy Angels, I am proud to present our 2021-2022 Annual Report. As we mark the 143rd anniversary of the founding of the Academy of the Holy Angels, we remain true to the mission of the School Sisters of Notre Dame – which is to transform our world through the education of our students. We are delighted to be back on campus with our Angels fully engaged in the classrooms, on the fields, and in numerous activities and service programs. Our faculty and staff are working hard to provide our young women with an extraordinary educational experience.
Our theme for this year “Peace is the language the language we must speak,” comes from the teachings of Pope Francis. At a time when our world presents young people with so many challenges, you can be sure that your gifts provide our students with innovative academic programs. Your gifts to Holy Angels directly impact the lives of our Angels, inspiring them to lead and to serve. We continue to look forward to the future with great hope because of the generosity of our benefactors and the foundation you provide to us.
May God continue bless you for your generous spirit and support. Wishing you peace, health, and happiness,
Melinda A. Hanlon Ed.S. President

AHA Pays Tribute to Sister Sharon Slear and Diane Oakley
AT A N g ELIC E VENIN g
Angelic Evening 2022 was a festive night of dinner, dancing, and accolades for two women who exemplify enduring commitment to Holy Angels: Sister Sharon Slear, SSND, and Diane Oakley (AHA ’71). Proceeds from the gala were dedicated to the renovations of the Academy’s auditorium and music wing, which are original to the 1965 school building.
AHA President Melinda Hanlon presented the awards to both honorees. S. Sharon received the Legacy Award for contributions that reflect the charism of the School Sisters of Notre Dame and make a lasting impact on AHA and those it serves.
“Holy Angels truly lives the SSND mission of academic and personal excellence and commitment to the development of each student to her fullest potential,” S. Sharon said as she accepted her award. “Faculty and administrators value this mission and are fully committed to living it each day.”
S. Sharon served on the AHA Board of Trustees for many years. She is an authority on educational leadership, and shares her expertise with teachers at Haiti’s Matenwa School. As a member of the Notre Dame of Maryland University’s faculty, S. Sharon developed graduate programs in education, and spearheaded the creation of the first doctoral program.
Oakley accepted the Distinguished Alumna Award for her extraordinary loyalty, commitment, dedication, and service to the advancement of AHA.
“AHA’s well-rounded education enabled me to journey in new paths, starting the women’s basketball team at Fairfield (University), being a leading voice and advocate about the need to improve future retirement security, especially for women, and now as a recent retiree serving the poor and the sick through prison ministry and other programs in the Order of Malta,” Oakley commented. “At each step on my life pilgrimage, the lesson from the SSND nuns, teachers, the dog-eared book and experiences help me continue to grow.” She recently retired as executive director of the National Institute on Retirement Security.

Greetings, Angel Sisters!
I hope this issue of Tidings finds you well. Holy Angels has started the school year with gusto once again! The halls are loud and filled with unmasked, smiling faces: sights and sounds we missed for far too long.
Graduations were all abuzz in early June. The upper school Class of 2022 graduation took place June 3rd at the stunning Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. One of the highlights
of the ceremony was an incredibly moving address by alumna Emily Bendaña McHale (AHA ’02). It’s exciting to witness our wonderful alumnae continuing to give the gift of themselves to current Angels!
June 10th marked the very first Holy Angels Middle School Graduation, which took place at Saint Therese of Lisieux in Cresskill. The girls were so proud to be a part of the middle school’s first graduating class. The sixth and seventh grade students participated in the event, and it was lovely to see everyone together celebrating our 8th grade graduates.
This fall, our Alumnae Association Board is excited about connecting with our current Angels before they graduate, so we will be on campus, handing out special treats for various holidays. We are also bringing back the Alumnae Ambassadors program (previously known as Alumnae Representatives). It is our hope that having these alumnae in communication with AHA after graduation will facilitate the AHA bond of sisterhood. We also plan to strengthen the Alumnae Mentoring program to help alumnae of all ages connect and network professionally.
We are looking for participants to be involved in these efforts. Please send a message to alumnae@holyangels.org if you are interested.
In the late spring of 2023, the Alumnae Association will hold a general council meeting, and all alumnae are encouraged to attend. We will be voting in our next slate of officers, and we hope to see you there! You may attend in person or virtually. Be on the lookout for more details. If you’re not currently connected to AHA via email and social media, we would love to see you online! Email alumnae@ holyangels.org and we look forward to seeing you soon.
Warmest Regards, Robyn Assile Ziemba ’96
We love to hear from our alumnae! Please share your good news and accomplishments with the entire AHA community. Send your news and photos for the next issue of Tidings to alumnae@holyangels.org. High resolution photos only please.

A painting of the Madonna that was purchased in Cuzco, Peru, is now hanging in the chapel in Kelleher Hall. The understated artwork was donated by Elyse Deublein Harney (AHA ’48), who hopes the framed image will inspire the young women who visit the chapel.
In a letter to AHA President Melinda Hanlon, Harney explained how she came to own the painting.
“The circumstances are most unusual,” Harney wrote in a January 16, 2022 letter to President Hanlon. “Last October, I had started the 33 Days to Morning Glory, which is a Do-it-Yourself Retreat in preparation for Marian consecration. On October 1, I completed this Consecration to Mary and shortly thereafter found a rolled up painting on my back porch.”
The note that accompanied the painting revealed that Jake Honeycutt, a social media expert who works for Harney’s real estate business, bought the image with Harney in mind.
Harney shared an October 2021 email from Honeycutt, in which he describes how he acquired the painting.
“I was just walking down a cobblestone street in Cuzco, Peru. There was an artist set up there selling paintings. I bought a couple for friends and that one just said to me…buy this for Elyse,” Honeycutt wrote.
He bought the painting and carried it around for about a month before he was able to deliver it to Harney.
This spring, Harney donated the painting to her alma mater, knowing it will enjoy plenty of display space and admiration.
Harney’s adult children are also giving back to AHA. The family recently established the Elyse Deublein Harney Scholarship for Holy Angels students.
This proud Holy Angels alumna said she and some of her classmates keep in touch on a weekly basis.
“We all sing the praises of our years at Holy Angels,” she said. “It certainly was a life-changer for me.”

The Garville family is proud to announce the creation of the Melissa Michele Garville Tuition Assistance Scholarship at the Academy of the Holy Angels (“MMG-TAS”). Awarded annually to two students based on financial need and academic performance, the scholarship provides tuition support for the duration of the recipients’ time at the Academy of the Holy Angels.
The scholarship is a beautiful way to honor Melissa’s memory and celebrate the role Holy Angels played in her life. From her time as a member of tennis team to her work with Model UN, or from the front row seat in physics class to her breakfast tradition of bacon, egg, and cheese dates in the cafeteria, Melissa’s years at Holy Angels were marked by her characteristic commitment to fun, friendship, and hard work.

Throughout her life, Melissa always looked for ways to give back, so our goal is to continue her legacy in a way that helps young women experience the same joy and opportunity she did as a proud member of the Holy Angels community. We hope that, just like Melissa, scholarship recipients will discover a lifelong love of learning, service, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship.
Knowing first-hand the life-long benefits a Holy Angels education provides, we invite all those who knew Melissa to consider contributing to the MMG-TAS fund at: www.holyangels.org/giving/MelissaMGarville
Any amount is greatly appreciated, and all contributions go directly to the scholarship fund and are tax deductible.
