THE ACADEMY OF THE HOLY CROSS 1

Letter from the Board Chair This is an exciting year for The Academy of the Holy Cross! Celebrating 150 years as a private, all-girls Catholic high school is a remarkable accomplishment. Each of us owns a piece of this legacy, and each of us should offer a prayer of gratitude for the role Holy Cross played in our lives during this season of thankfulness. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, let me add my thanks for the continued support of those who make the Academy a priority in their lives and in their charitable giving. I hope you have been able to attend one or more of the celebratory events planned in honor of the 150th Anniversary. The time, attention to detail, and thoughtfulness that went into planning these celebrations to honor the heritage of the Sisters of the Holy Cross has been very evident: a Mass at Saint Matthew’s where it all began; a special reunion at the Upton Street campus for the alumnae who attended there; and a new heritage display that marks the significant milestones in the Academy’s history. It was a special joy to welcome Sister Grace back to campus for the opening of our celebratory year. I look forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming events planned in honor of this special year. While the Academy looks back with gratitude, the school leadership continues to look forward to advancing the opportunities for current and future students. This year Holy Cross began two significant educational endeavors: Dual Credit/Dual Enrollment with Marymount University and Project Lead the Way Engineering courses, an important component of the STEM-focused education. President Katy Prebble’s leadership, especially her expertise in academic and financial development, has been essential in advancing the Holy Cross mission. Principal Melissa Huey-Burns, equally proficient in educational and technological insight, continues to ensure the success of the Academy’s strategic priorities. Their guidance and stewardship will keep the Academy at the forefront of today’s learning environment. These opportunities are made possible because of the continued financial support of our Holy Cross community. Please help the Academy continue its faithful dedication to, and tradition of, educating young women in a Christ-centered community and the development of young women of courage, compassion and scholarship. The Academy’s success is due in part to your past support of the Annual Fund. Every contribution is very important. I hope that you will take this opportunity to renew your support and help us continue that tradition of success. Thank you for your generosity in supporting and helping to ensure the success of future graduates of the Academy. With grateful appreciation,

Helen Stanislav Dankos ’75 Chair, Board of Trustees

COURAGE 2 THE TARTAN Fall 2017

COMPASSION

SCHOLARSHIP

Letter from the President The accomplishments of this past year have come in so many areas of the school life. Our outstanding young women led our Robotics Team, AHC Transformers, in its inaugural year to win the “Rookie Inspiration Award” in their first competition. Another team of remarkable young women won the Verizon Innovative Learning app challenge, receiving Best in State and Best in Region. Meanwhile, our volleyball team won its fifth straight WCAC Championship. Eleven young athletes went off to play sports in colleges and universities, including five D1 athletes. Eleven students participated in the inaugural Spes Unica Service trip to Saint Mary’s College, where they visited the Sisters of the Holy Cross, the campuses of Saint Mary’s and Notre Dame, and assisted at a local parish meals program. Our students put on two impressive theatrical productions, rocked the stage with their dance concerts, and the voices of the Madrigals at graduation stay with us every year as just one example of the dozens of times their performances inspired us all. Meanwhile, Holy Cross announced its 2017 Strategic Plan for the next five years—a process that included feedback from alumnae, students, faculty, staff, parents, trustees, and friends. Our vision for the Academy to be the school of choice for girls pursuing a spiritually-driven education in an innovative student-centered environment, where each girl thrives in school and excels in life, drives our decision-making and inspires us to move in a common direction. We witnessed the fruits of our vision on that wonderful day last June when I had the honor of presenting a Holy Cross diploma to 119 remarkable young women of the Class of 2017. These strong, independent young women ventured out to 73 different institutions of higher learning in 23 states, Canada and the United Kingdom. Their concern and passion for their community, their country, and the world set an outstanding example for all of us. None of this would have been possible without the generous support of time, energy and resources of our alumnae, alumnae parents, current parents, grandparents, Trustees, faculty, staff, and friends of Holy Cross. It is because of you that we continue to stand strong 150 years after the sisters opened our school at Saint Matthew’s parish in Washington, DC. We continue to celebrate our very special birthday and hope you will visit our new Heritage Hall and join us at our 150th Anniversary Benefit Auction and Gala in March, and our Tartanfest and 5K/Fun Run in May. Sincerely,

Kathleen R. Prebble President and CEO

Now that the foundation has been laid, we must carry on this work of providence, help it reach its goals, and cooperate with whatever designs God may have for it. Blessed Basil Moreau

Holy Cross Faculty Honored

AS ARCHDIOCESE OF WASHINGTON NOVICE AND VETERAN TEACHERS OF THE YEAR

The Archdiocese of Washington honors outstanding Catholic faculty members at the High School Principals’ Association Professional Development Conference for Catholic high school educators in October. Their peers nominate the teachers for two categories: Novice Teacher of the Year and Veteran Teacher of the Year. The Academy’s selections this year are Damon McGraw for Novice Teacher of the Year and Demi Kinney for Veteran Teacher of the Year. Damon McGraw joined the Holy Cross faculty as a Theology teacher in 2015. Currently Dr. McGraw shares his talent and experience teaching World Religions to students in our college-prep and International Baccalaureate courses, as well as in our dual-credit courses with Marymount University. Students find him to be engaging and a great communicator on the Christian world-view. As a teacher, Dr. McGraw stated that “I am keen on creating opportunities for students to experience and live their faith through service and dialogue.” Damaris “Demi” Kinney ’01 returned to her alma mater in 2011 to pursue her passion for teaching Algebra and Geometry and now serves as the Chair of the Math Department. In addition to inspiring future mathematicians in the classroom, Mrs. Kinney has always energetically assumed other positions in the school community. She has served as the Dean of Students, as an enthusiastic chaperone for school retreats, and as an active participant in the Forum for Teaching and Learning, which provides professional development to our faculty. Currently, she guides the student representatives as the Moderator of the Honor Board, instilling fairmindedness in their just decisions. Mrs. Kinney commented, “Teaching is not only conveying knowledge, but also providing resources and encouragement to empower students to be the best versions of themselves.” 4 THE TARTAN Fall 2017

Always a Holy Cross Girl This year Holy Cross has eight alumnae on faculty/staff. The LOTAs had this to say about working at that alma mater: “It is a joy to see the school evolve. The girls have so many opportunities available to them. There is something for every student and interest. It is truly wonderful to witness.” Donna Reese ’77, Performing Arts (Dance) Teacher “My grandmother attended the Academy when it was on Upton Street. I am her only granddaughter (out of seven) to graduate from here. It is a unique bond that only we share and that makes this place even more special to me.” Demi Herman Kinney ’01, Math Teacher

“Every time I walk through the front halls of the school, I am reminded of great memories! It’s all changed since 1979, but I love it and look forward to more changes/additions in the future.” Kathleen Warner Bula ’79, Institutional Advancement Associate “I am grateful for the education and Catholic values I obtained when I attended AHC. They are a big part of the woman, mother, friend and professional I am today. I love being a teacher at AHC because I care about the future of our school, and I want it to continue providing a safe haven for our girls to thrive in.” Teresa Gomez Koudjeti ’84, World Languages (Spanish) Teacher “I gained an understanding of myself and a confidence that only comes from an all-girls environment that nurtured and encouraged my interests and always pushed me to be the best version of myself. This is the community I feel at home in and one that I am privileged to share with future Holy Cross girls.” Meredith Gobbi ’06, Director of Admissions “Holy Cross is family. Working here for 22 years my family has grown beyond the girls I graduated with to alumnae across the years, numerous faculty and staff, and parents past and present. I am proud and honored to be part of this great legacy.” Danielle Mahaney Ballantine ’86, Communications Director “I love to share with everyone that I work at my alma mater, Holy Cross. I am blessed to see our Catholic faith alive and share it with our students and colleagues each day. Our strong heritage of educating young women to be compassionate leaders that began 150 years ago enables all Holy Cross girls to achieve high educational goals, forge strong friendships of sisterhood and to see the world through the eyes of faith.” Kathleen Burgess Clark ’82, School Nurse “Working at Holy Cross has given me the opportunity to connect to a new generation of soon-to-be-alumnae and to share my traditions with them as well as opportunities to reminisce with students on my past experiences as a student here.” Kellie Looney ’10, Assistant Athletic Director THE ACADEMY OF THE HOLY CROSS 5

Opening Mass and HERITAGE HALL DEDICATION The Academy of the Holy Cross community gathered for its opening Mass celebration on Wednesday, August 30. In celebration of the Academy’s 150th year, six priests joined the assembly for the liturgy: Msgr. John Enzler (principal celebrant); Msgr. Ray East; Msgr. Maury O’Connell; Father Stephen Planning, SJ; Father Martino Choi; and Father Mbonyumugenzi Deogratias. Four Sisters of the Holy Cross also attended the Mass: Sister John Anthony, Sister Vivian, Sister Katherine Kase, and Sister Sharon Mihm ’63. All in attendance received a special 150th pin during the Mass and were encouraged to wear it throughout the year. Following the Mass, Msgr. Enzler led a blessing and dedication ceremony of the new Heritage Hall display space. At lunchtime following the celebration students were treated to cupcakes by the administration.

6 THE TARTAN Fall 2017

The 2017-2018 school year marks 150 years for The Academy of the Holy Cross. To commemorate this special occasion, we have planned several special events throughout the year. This edition of the Tartan Magazine highlights the events that took place in August, September and October. In our next edition, we will showcase other upcoming events. We hope you can join us to celebrate this significant anniversary.

THE ACADEMY OF THE HOLY CROSS 7

RETURNING TO OUR ROOTS: Anniversary Mass at Cathedral of Saint Matthew Over 400 people attended the 150th Anniversary Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew the Apostle on Sunday, September 24. The Academy was established at Saint Matthew’s parish by the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1868. Archbishop of Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl was principal celebrant of the liturgy along with five other priests connected to the Academy. President Katy Prebble acknowledged the 10 Sisters of the Holy Cross who attended the celebration and thanked the sisters for the legacy they gave to all who are a part of The Academy of the Holy Cross. During his homily, Cardinal Wuerl acknowledged the tremendous work and devotion of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, in the Archdiocese of Washington, in the United States and throughout the world. The Mass was organized by Holy Cross Director of Campus Ministry Linda Ruszkowski. Members of the Holy Cross community were involved in every aspect of the service: altar servers, readers, and gift bearers. A combined choir of students, faculty/staff and alumnae, directed by Performing Arts Chair Laura Meehan, led the assembly in songs which included “Cross of Our Hope,” written in celebration of the beatification of Blessed Basil Moreau, founder of the Holy Cross priests, brothers and sisters, and the alma mater of the Academy’s Kensington campus. The Holy Cross Madrigal singer ensemble sang “I Will Sing to the Lord,” written by Sister Marie Cecile (Fitzgerald), CSC, in celebration of the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Holy Cross sisters, and “How True It Is,” written by former faculty member Michael Turnblom, based on the words of Blessed Basil Moreau. Cardinal Wuerl greeted attendees after the Mass concluded. A reception followed.

Upton Street Alumnae

ALUMNAE RETURN TO Upton Street Campus More than 50 alumnae from the classes

of 1945-1959 returned to their campus on Upton Street in Northwest Washington, DC on Sunday, October 22. The annual Upton Street Reunion, which is usually held on the Kensington campus, took place at the special location this year in celebration of the 150th anniversary. The group attended Mass in the chapel, with music provided by the Holy Cross Madrigal ensemble, followed by a reception in the main lobby. During the reception, alumnae sat together in class groups, posed for group photos, reminisced about their time as high school girls and caught up on the latest news with each other. Some brought spouses who also remembered attending dances at the campus. For many of the alumnae the event marked their first time back to the campus in years. For some it was their first return since their high school graduation. “It was so wonderful to come back here!” said Sister Ann Shaw, CSC ’56. “I’m so glad the Academy arranged this for us!” Her sentiment was echoed by the other alumnae in attendance. The former campus is now part of the Howard University Law School.

Project Lead the Way ENGINEERING COURSE BOOTS STEM FOCUS

The Academy of the Holy Cross embraces the role that science, technology, engineering and mathematics plays in our girls’ education. As new and emerging technologies make vast amounts of information available, there is a need for creating open learning environments that can engage learners in active, intentional, and cooperative learning. This year Holy Cross added the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program to the curriculum. PLTW empowers girls to step into the role of an engineer and adopt a problem-solving mindset. The program engages students in collaborative, real-world activities. As they work together to design and develop solutions to local and global challenges, they engage in problem-solving strategies and critical and creative thinking. There are three sections of students who are taking the Honors Introduction to Engineering course this semester. Our Engineering classroom is designed to be flexible, adaptable, and mobile to accommodate the learning environment. The Academy will add Principles of Engineering in 2018-2019. Girls who pass the year-end exam will earn three college credits for each PLTW course from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Senior Travels TO HAITI ON MISSION TRIP Megan Witt ’18 traveled to Haiti this summer through the Mission Youth program where she worked with the Missionaries of Charity. Megan traveled on her own for the trip from Washington, DC to Fort Lauderdale to Haiti. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world, and was left in devastation after the 2010 earthquake and the recent series of hurricanes. When asked about the focus of this mission trip, Megan responded, “To make a difference for the children and those who are sick.” During the mornings, she assisted with camps for young girls. In the afternoons, the group would either go to a home for the sick or to an orphanage for sick children. Megan was inspired by the positive attitude she saw in the people of Haiti despite their circumstances. One of the sisters she worked with on the trip compared the poverty of Americans and Haitians who noted that in America “everyone is so poor in poor in spirit, love, and happiness, but in Haiti, they [may] be monetarily dirt poor but they are so rich in spirit, love, and happiness, that it doesn’t even compare.” Megan also felt the hospitality of the Haitian people and wished she could have stayed for a longer trip. She plans to return next summer.

Tartans Explore THE CHESAPEAKE BAY Girls in the IB Environmental Systems and Societies class attended the annual Chesapeake Bay Foundation threeday field trip at the end of September. The 19 juniors and seniors traveled to the CBF’s Karen Noonan Environmental Education Center located in Maryland’s Blackwater Wildlife Refuge. While there they learned about the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay and efforts to protect this important resource. The experience gives the students ideas for experiments that they will develop for their required IB assessments.

Holy Cross Partners WITH MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY FOR DUAL CREDIT/DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, the Academy now offers a dual credit/dual enrollment program in partnership with Marymount University in Arlington, VA to afford eligible students two opportunities to earn college credit. Dual credit allows eligible seniors in strong academic standing to fulfill a high school academic requirement while simultaneously earning college credit for a course. These courses are taught on our campus during the school day by Holy Cross faculty members who have achieved adjunct faculty status at Marymount. These credits may be transferable to other colleges and universities, depending upon the school and its policies. There are three dual-credit courses this year: Approaches to Creative Writing (English), Religions of the World (Theology), and Microeconomics (History & Social Science). As with AP and IB courses, students enrolled in these courses receive 0.7 additional grade points towards their GPA upon successful completion of the course with a grade of C- or higher. In this first year for dual-credit classes, 64 girls are enrolled. Under the dual enrollment arrangement, rising seniors at Holy Cross become eligible to take any introductory course at Marymount University in Arlington, VA for college credit at a substantially discounted rate. They have the full use of campus facilities such as libraries, research opportunities, and athletic spaces. While students gain the experience of attending a college class, they also earn college credit which in many cases is transferable to the college they will attend.

Senior Chelsea Kwak SELECTED FOR FOLGER SHAKESPEARE LIBRARY FELLOWSHIP

Chelsea Kwak ’18 is participating this year in the Lily McKee High School Fellowship at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. Students in this rigorous September-to-May program explore a range of approaches to Shakespeare and the humanities, with deep dives into two plays and the sonnets. The fellows explore different types of learning: rare book talks, research in the Folger Reading Rooms, Folger Theatre matinees, student performances on the Elizabethan stage, conservation lab tours, and weekly seminars with world-class scholars. Working with scholars, actors, directors, teachers, editors, conservators, curators, and digital humanists, McKee Fellows form a community of learners gathered around knowledge and materials found only at the Folger. The program consists of an intensive fall course and up to five additional spring sessions. The fall course culminates in a showcase of student research and group scenes. In the spring, fellows play a role in special sessions linked to broader programming at the Folger.

Tartans Swim ACROSS AMERICA In September, Emily May ’18, Elise Mitchell ’18 and Lizanne Passaro ’17 participated in Swim Across America – Baltimore Open Water Swim. Each girl swam a mile at the High Tide Farm in the Redhouse Cove of the Magothy River in Pasadena, MD. Proceeds from the swim supported immunotherapy clinical trials and research at the Swim Across America Lab at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Medicine. The LOTAs raised close to $1,800 this year. In the past four years, the swimmers from Holy Cross have raised nearly $10,000 total.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNAE AWARDS/ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTION Friday, April 20 - 7:00 pm THE ACADEMY OF THE HOLY CROSS 21

The Annual Fund One of most important initiatives at Holy Cross is developing our culture of philanthropy – educating and encouraging those who admire the school

to support it financially year after year. The Academy’s ongoing comprehensive annual fund-raising initiative is to increase the level of annual giving that the school receives from alumnae, parents/guardians and friends. These constituencies currently contribute over $500,000. The importance of gifts to the Annual Giving Fund cannot be overemphasized: they offset a percentage of the school’s program costs each year. Without this support, the school would be hard-pressed to offer competitive salaries to its faculty or much-needed financial aid to deserving students. All donations, whether large or small, have true power. They are integral to the school’s character, and through annual giving, everyone who loves Holy Cross can contribute in a real way to strengthening and enriching it. Help celebrate the Academy’s 150th Anniversary with your gift of support. Use the enclosed giving envelope, make your gift online, transfer stock or appreciated securities, and check with your employer about matching gift programs.

Our girls directly benefit from your gifts of support.

Planned Giving

Another wonderful way to support Holy Cross is to become a member of the Legacy Circle. Consider adding Holy Cross to your will or insurance policy as a beneficiary upon your death. Your planned gift is a powerful statement and a loving gesture to the young women of the Academy who will continue to benefit from your kindness and generosity. Contact your financial planner or attorney for more information, then contact the Advancement Office so that we can add your name to our growing list of members of the Legacy Circle! 22 THE TARTAN Fall 2017

WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS Revenues and Expenditures

An integral part of the Academy’s five-year Strategic Plan is its commitment to ensuring financial integrity by the strategic use of its resources. In 2016-2017, Holy Cross’ financial position was strengthened by an increase in gifts and foundation support as well as solid returns on our investments. It was your generous gifts to our Annual Fund and The Difference We Make: The Campaign for The Academy of the Holy Cross which provided the school with the opportunity to continue pursuing the priorities outlined in the Plan. Please help us keep up our good work by your continued support. Tuition and fees remain the biggest contributor by far to our revenue and we continue to face increasing pressure to cover our commitment to competitive faculty and staff salaries, enhanced programs, strong financial aid and scholarships, and the maintenance of our physical plant. We cannot do it without you. HERE IS WHERE THE MONEY COMES FROM...

Why I Give

I am impressed by the measures being implemented by the current AHC

community to carry out enhancements of the goals envisioned by

founders a century and a half ago. It is indeed gratifying to see the many young women now benefitting from the magnificent results

ensuing from their founding foresight. Kudos to the faculty and staff who work tirelessly to advance this vital vision.

Why I Give

My parents sent me to the US from India when I was a teenager and I

started at Holy Cross as a junior. My mother was diagnosed with cancer early in my junior year and she passed away the following

spring. My father was unable to continue sending me to Holy Cross

on a single income, and so I began my senior year at a high school in Georgia. Early in the school year I was overwhelmed to receive a call

from Holy Cross asking me if I wanted to come back for the remainder of the year. Without the help of the Holy Cross Annual fund, I would not have been able to come back to Holy Cross for my senior year and graduate as a Tartan.

This experience was extremely moving for me and had a profound

impact on the woman I grew up to be. I want to do my part to ensure that other young women have the same opportunity to attend such a wonderful high school. That is why I donate every year to the Holy Cross Annual Fund. Please join me to support the outstanding

teachers and staff who have shaped the future of so many young women over the past 150 years.

Why I Give

The best thing my parents ever

did for me (after creating me!) was enrolling me in a faith-based, all-

girls college prep school. Not Holy Cross, but a fine academy in the

state where I grew up. That learning environment enabled me to develop the skills of leadership, research,

organization, analysis and writing

that have been the foundation of my successes.

I give to my alma mater. And I also give to The Academy of the Holy

Cross. Not because I have daughters. (I don’t.) I give because Holy Cross delivers immeasurable value in

the community where I now live. I am inspired by the Academy’s

well-rounded program and by its

leadership, which is trying to prepare girls for the challenges of the next

150 years. Our troubled world needs, more than ever before, what Holy

Cross produces: women of courage, compassion, and scholarship. It

cannot do this on tuition alone. The Academy of the Holy Cross needs

and deserves everyone’s generosity.

Why I Give

The Academy of the Holy Cross holds

a very special place in my heart as my

family, like many others, has a long legacy with the school. My

grandmother, mother, sister, daughter, and I were all graduates and I

think it is important to give in appreciation for the education, lifelong

friends and wonderful memories I was fortunate to receive as well as to enable future generations of young women to have the opportunity.

I am very impressed that Holy Cross both honors its long traditions

and embraces technological advances with the required academic rigors in an environment where students can thrive. Our country, more

than ever, needs future leaders with intelligence, skill, compassion and

character, and I hope that The Academy of the Holy Cross will continue its legacy for 150 more years!

Theatre Lobby Named in Honor

OF BARBARA CAREY HAYES ’56 On December 15, 2016, Barbara Carey Hayes ’56 passed away at her

home in Connecticut. Holy Cross President Katy Prebble had visited with Barbara on a recent trip to Connecticut. During the visit, Barbara shared that she loved her years at Holy Cross and one of her fondest memories was performing in the theater. Barbara was a generous donor to the Academy during her lifetime, both as an alumna and parent. In honor of her generous bequest of $500,000, we are grateful and extremely proud to name the Barbara Carey Hayes Theatre Lobby in her memory. Barbara was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on May 10, 1939 to Frank and Anna Carey. She was raised with her two sisters, Eleanor and Susan, in Arlington, VA. Barbara graduated from The Academy of the Holy Cross in 1956, the Georgetown University School of Nursing in 1960, and received her Master of Arts in Education from NYU College of Nursing in 1963.

Throughout her career, Barbara worked in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, focusing on high-risk patients, and aiding those in a community setting. She taught Lamaze classes for many years, including to pregnant teens and women in prison. Barbara was involved in a variety of clubs and charitable organizations, including the March of Dimes, investment clubs, current events clubs, book clubs, and served as secretary to the Residents’ Counsel for her community. She moved with her husband, the late Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr., to Hershey, PA where he was the Director of Clinical Pharmacology at the Pennsylvania State University Medical School and to Washington, DC, where he served as the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration under President Ronald Reagan. After Dr. Hayes’ tenure at the FDA, they moved to New Rochelle, NY. In 2005, the Hayes’ settled in Oxford, CT to be closer to their family. After her husband’s death, Barbara moved to Pomperaug Woods Retirement Community in Southbury, CT. Barbara and Arthur were the parents of Holy Cross graduates Katherine Hayes Saracino ’84 and Elizabeth Hayes ’82 (deceased). THE ACADEMY OF THE HOLY CROSS 39

With the recent growth of the economy, many are in a position to

increase their donations to the Academy. We can take the opportunity to increase our gifts to enhance the school’s growth and continue

to add courses to the curriculum, such as the Project Lead the Way Engineering courses started this year.

I know many Holy Cross graduates from the last 10 years, and have been impressed by their accomplishments after graduation. The

Academy prepared them well for college and the beginning of their

careers. When you see the success of Holy Cross graduates you know your donations are well spent.

The Difference We Make campaign was a wonderful success thanks to the generous donors who have pledged or gifted support since the spring of 2013. The renovation of two student bathrooms allows the Academy to finalize campaign projects and gives the community the opportunity to enjoy the celebrations of the 150th Anniversary before embarking on future initiatives and improvements. Below are the list of donors who have donated to the campaign during the 2016-2017 school year, including gifts to the Mary Owens-Jessica Wilson Class of 1994 Memorial Fund and the artificial-turf field in memory of Richard and Eugenie Ridgway.

After graduating from Holy Cross, Chiara Niosi attended the two-year early commissioning ROTC program at New Mexico Military Institute. She graduated from NMMI in 2015 with an associate’s degree in the arts. She was commissioned into

the U.S. Army in 2015 and then attended Norwich University, a senior military college in Vermont. There she was a platoon leader for a transportation company in the national guard. After graduating cum laude from Norwich University in May 2017 with a major in Criminal Justice, she is completing the Basic Officer Leaders Course to learn all things about field artillery and what it entails to be a field artillery officer in the U.S. Army. It is located in Fort Sill, OK. Chiara will move to Hawaii in March 2018. Kerry Rose Stein writes: “This past summer I had the experience of a lifetime as I ran with a team of 29 other young adults 4,000 miles across the country. Along the way we raised funds and awareness for a Baltimore-based non-profit called the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. I learned about the “4K for Cancer” through another fellow alumna, Carrie McAuliffe ’14. Having an older brother who was a young adult battling cancer (a survivor now!), this underserved group of cancer patients held a particular interest to me. From years of volunteering and a desire to participate in service projects that was instilled in me as a Holy Cross girl, I knew this was the perfect opportunity. The journey was undoubtedly the hardest challenge I have ever faced in my young adult life, and also the most rewarding. We slept in a different city every night and experienced kindness you wouldn’t believe. Everywhere we went we spread our message and made connections with people we will never forget. Am I a runner now? No. But am I in great shape? Also no…we ate a lot on this trip! I will say one thing though: cancer changes lives, but so do we!” (See Kerry’s posts at www.facebook.com/RunKerRun/.) Kerry Rose Stein ’13 (center)
