HOSA Newsletter

Have you heard of HOSA? Did you know that Wellington High School has a medical club? With the beginning of the club in 2021, Wellington High School’s chapter of Future Health Professionals—more commonly recognized as the national organization HOSA—has been making a huge impact on the student body and community! HOSA was founded to bring together students interested in the medical field, and the club has allowed many to glimpse their ideal career paths. In years past, as a club, we have held countless fundraisers to support many valuable causes. This year, HOSA is back, with some returning members and many new ones who are ready to make a difference. We began our year by participating in Hispanic Heritage Month, where we helped raise awareness throughout the school about the various Hispanic and Latino contributions to medicine. In HOSA, we are big on student involvement, as we urge our members to participate in small leadership groups and interact with others who may hold similar interests. Our November group, which focuses on Medical aspects, created Care Packages for pediatric hospital patients this fall. This was done by collecting donations of stuffed animals, candy, and bracelets with uplifting messages and then putting the items together to create gift bags that were then brought to Wellington Regional Hospital’s Pediatric department. Our students worked very hard to gather all the materials, and Wellington Regional was extremely grateful for our contribution. Additionally, the Medical Group put together a Canned Food Drive, recognizing that Thanksgiving is a time for giving back to the community. The group decorated food drive boxes and created posters to engage the student body and encourage donations to our cause. Aside from the November Group, HOSA came back with its annual tradition: The Pink Pumpkin Fundraiser! As a club, we bring back the tradition every year during October to not only increase awareness for Breast Cancer but also to raise money to support breast cancer research. We had a great involvement from the student body this year, and we want to thank each one of you for helping us support this great cause! Now it’s December and HOSA has a new activity planned: Holiday Stocking Grams! We hope to spread some holiday spirit and fundraise to help those with disabilities. Around 75% of proceeds from the Stocking Grams will go towards supporting International Day of Persons With Disabilities. As can be seen, our HOSA students work very hard to accomplish what they are passionate about, and we couldn’t do it without the help of our sponsor Ms. Mendez! We look forward to next semester's activities; we have some exciting things planned, such as two blood drives (January 22nd and March 19th). For these drives, we collaborate with the well-known One Blood, to help gather blood for those in need at local hospitals. So if you’re 16 years or older, please donate! For our other surprise activities, please participate when we announce them, and even consider joining the club next year to help us make an impact on your school and community!
