Where has the year gone? Woodlands’ has definitely had a monumental year! I am truly pleased with all of our student’s accomplishments. As we progress into the summer break, I would like to thank our students, parents, and teachers for enduring the busy second half of the school year. Our student’s success will prove that being diligent in their studies is very rewarding. Please encourage them to continue their learning during the summer break.
Please make sure they read at least 30 minutes daily and check Edline for any summer assignments.
I hope the summer break provides you with an opportunity to connect with family and friends.
May the summer break give each

From Bookkeeper’s Desk
Here we are the end of the school year 2016, an exciting time for all of our 8th grade students. There is an issue that we need parents to know. Make sure that you check to see if your students have any obligations owed that you need to clear before students move to high schools. Textbooks, library books, IDs obligations may prevent, your student, in the future, from receiving textbooks, participating in field trips, proms and even walking to receive their diploma. Please check with the school to see that there is no obligations following your student to high schools. Call your student services office. For students moving to 7th and 8th grade it is also important that they know if they have outstanding. If you have obligations will not allow you to participate in school activities like dances, field trips, etc. Please contact your grade level to correct the situation so that your student is able to participate in the fun. Remember it is easier to pay on line than to send a check or cash, only to find out they were lost. If there is something you would like for us to add for the next year give us your suggestions and we will address it. During the year we have the following available for on-line payment: 1. PE uniforms, locks and sports bags. 2. Id badges and lanyards 3. Science dept. donations 4. Cambridge donations 5. Yearbooks 6. Band instruments 7. Most field trips and fundraisers 8. Medical Academy donations 9. Culinary Academy donations 10. Technology Academy donations Always make sure that you print a receipt to present to the sponsor should he/she requires it. Kennedy Weech

For the second year in a row, seventh grader Kennedy Weech was published in the Palm Beach County Middle School Poetry Competition anthology. Kennedy’s poem “Pressure” was selected for publication from among 300+ poems by judges Dr. David Axelrod, Poet Laureate of Volusia County; Anastasia Clark, former Poet-in-Residence for Broward County; and world-published author Virgil Suarez. The competition is generously funded by the Love 4 One Another Charities, and competition director Laura Costello revealed for the first time that the recently deceased musician Prince is the benefactor. This year’s anthology is available in our Media Center. Way to represent WMS, Kennedy! Kennedy is pictured with her parents, Robert & Cathy Weech.

On February 24th, six of our teachers were notified from FL DOE Commissioner Pam Stewart that they are in the top 5% for student growth in the state of Florida for the school years 201213, 2013-14, and 2014-15. This data is measured by student performance on standardized tests from grades 4-10 in ELA, Math, and Algebra. This is a truly special feat considering there are 177,000 public school teachers in Florida; 90,437 of those teachers are in grades 4-10 in ELA, Math, and Algebra. The top five percent is 4,522 teachers and Woodlands has 6 of the 4,522 teachers! Please congratulate Mr. Bednarek, Mrs. Dubler, Ms. Feinberg, Mrs. Marchsteiner, Ms. Ritaccio, and Ms. Robbins on this wonderful accomplishment
4 HOSA STUDENTS COMPETE IN STATE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
We had a great trip to Orlando with our students to compete in the HOSA: Future Health Professionals State Leadership Conference on April 14-16. Their dedication, attitude, and behavior were excellent and demonstrated Mustang PRIDE! We are very proud of their accomplishments. These students placed in the top five in “State Category Events”: Sabina Augustin, 1st place History, Health Science and HOSA Knowledge; Camilo Pina - 4th place Medical Reading; Katie Carradi - 3rd place Researched Persuasive Speaking. These students earned top five in “National Category Events”, and for the first time, middle schools may continue in competition! The top three positions are invited to compete at the International Leadership Conference in Nashville, TN in late June. Congratulations to: Ilianna Hernandez, Marissa Ciardullo, Danielle Cora, and Julia Zehl - 2nd place Public Health; Margo Mandell, Chinyere Oko, and Riley Ross 3rd place Public Health; Joseph Hunt - 2nd place Extemporaneous Health Poster; Sabrina McCranels - 5th place Extemporaneous Health Poster; Dylan Slossberg - 2nd place Prepared Speaking; Zara Siassi - 3rd place Prepared Speaking; and Tatyana Pena, Isabelle Soto, Jade Steele - 1st place Health Education. We also had two earn recognition as Courtesy Corps students, assisting as needed with the competition: Hannah Alderman - 3rd place; Wadler Aldajuste - 4th place. Our chapter was recognized as the largest middle school chapter in Florida with over a hundred members, which earns us the Centum Chapter award. The HOSA Chapter Reflection scrapbook prepared by our historian, Hannah Alderman, earned Recognition of Excellence as well. It was a successful and memorable conference. Thanks to our students and chaperones!

Guest Speaker: Fred Haise
APOLLO 13 ASTRONAUT – TEST PILOT – SPACE SHUTTLE PILOT – AEROSPACE ENGINEER
On March 17th, selected students of Mr. Ogan’s U.S. History class, as well as Medical Academy students, had the privilege to speak to Mr. Fred Haise. Mr. Haise is best known as being one of NASA’s original Apollo astronauts. As a member of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission , Mr. Haise proved to the world that having a passion for education, being dedicated to a profession , and living a life of service to the world is well worth the effort. His skill as an astronaut proved to be invaluable towards the safe return of the Apollo 13 crew from a life-threatening spaceship explosion while on a mission to land on the moon. Mr. Organ met Mr. Haise while attending the memorial service for the late Dr. Edgar Mitchell – Apollo 14 astronaut - and 6th man to walk on the moon. It was during this meeting that Mr. Haise agreed to speak to the Woodlands students. The discussion was conducted via “Skype” technology – with Woodlands students sitting in the Media Center, and Mr. Haise being in his Texas home. Student questions concerning space exploration, education in the sciences, as well as courage , dedication, and just plain having the “guts” to do all the things that he has done in his life, proved to be a great experience for all!
