DISCOVER THE PROBLEMS

D I S C O V E R // P R O B L E M S T A T E M E N T

An active outdoors person
 who feels

unequipped about creating and sharing cool footage
 wants to
 stand out on social media
but faces the lack of editing tools and inspiration to share amongst others.

D I S C O V E R // R E S E A R C H P L A N The research plan was designed as such order to allow the team take the insights from each phase to dive deeper into the target audience’s perspective.

Surveys

The year 2020 was a significant one in social media. The pandemic pushed more people to spend time online and find more ways to engage with each other. We should take the due dilligence to see if there’s a switch in the demographic and general behaviour from the previously heavily skew towards outdoors users.

Competitor
 Analysis

Keeping up with trends and the already-popular apps is important to get some insights on what appeals in today’s audience.

Heuristic
 Evaluation

After learning standards in the industry, understanding our own product is the first step towards improving it. This way, we will know where it stands among the competitors.

Contextual
 Enquiry

For this step, we will be getting a few people to use their favourite apps. It can be social media, or

photo editing, or even work apps (Google Docs/Sheets/etc.). We would like to learn what makes different apps work for different people.

We are targeting a few GoPro users in this segment. The idea is that the team would be able to

ask more educated questions after all the findings from the previous research steps. The answers we get from here are so important because these are the very people who will be using the app.

D I S C O V E R // U S E R R E S E A R C H Due to the lockdown in Melbourne, all user research sessions were done remotely. Interviews were done with friends and relatives who were identified as GoPro users.

Respondents were largely from Australia, where activities were limited by the lockdowns. For this reason, the insights don’t represent the view from customers around the world.

Throughout the research, we were looking for new ways to enhance the app beyond what it is currently offering. As the result, the findings weren’t in specific order and therefore the team took the ‘open sorting’ approach to create the Affinity Map.

Fhe team identified three different types of GoPro users.

Jackson is a young professional who works full-time at an advertising agency. He runs/cycles to the office and is surrounded by creative people on daily basis. He enjoys socialising with his colleague and friends. He likes being active, travelling, explore new places in which he often captures those moments and spends hours to edit the videos before sharing on social media.

How might we maximise the app usage
 for action-driven users
so that they can do all they need in one app? How might we incentivise
 for our recently-inactive users
so that they keep using their GoPro and the app? How might we add functionalities
 for value-seeker users
so that they feel they get more from the app?

DELIVER THE SOLUTIONS

D E L I V E R // L O W - F I D E L I T Y P R O T O T Y P E

The team turned the static wireframes into a prototype before we applied any interface styling. This allowed us to validate whether the flows or functionalities are solid.

The interactive prototype can be accessed on this link: https://tinyurl.com/fz9euzdk

D E L I V E R // U S A B I L I T Y T E S T I N G The low-fidelity prototype were tested to all three types of users and had a great initial response on the new ‘Social’ and ‘Challenges’ features. In summary, the team found that all participants see the appeal of the additions although there were minor feedback on the flows on each navigation.

After a few iterations, the team finally reached
a prototype version that passed our usability testing. A few features and flows have been modified from the previous low-fidelity prototype and design feedback has been implemented.

D E L I V E R // C O N C L U S I O N & N E X T S T E P S

Summary

The team identified that one of the primary reasons users do not use the app is the fact that it is reliant on the use of the GoPro cameras. The COVID-19 situation and lockdowns prevent our users from being active and also creative. GoPro isn’t known for everyday use.

Secondly, the lack of social element of the app limits it to being a photo or footage editing tool in which the outcome is to share it on social media. The suggested enhanced GoPro app tackles both key problems because it normalises GoPro for everyday use. Where the brand used to hero the people who go out and do extreme activities, it now does for the everyday achievements too.
