Acadia: A Timeline 1838 Queen’s College, later Acadia College, is established. The first class enters in 1839 and graduates in 1843.
1860 A ladies’ seminary comes to Wolfville. Seminary House is built in 1879.
A Proud History Looking back over the last 175 years, Acadia has stood above the rest many times as an institutional and community leader, helping to shape students’ lives and discourse on higher education across the country. “Acadia has never had the feeling that education belonged to the elite,” says Barry Moody (‘67), professor emeritus and former head of Acadia’s Department of History. “Education is and should be for everyone.” This concept has shaped Acadia’s philosophy, from its humble beginnings to present day, and underscored the University’s unique role as a primarily undergraduate liberal arts university. On November 15, 1838, meetings took place in Horton, N.S. (now Wolfville), and then in Nictaux, where plans were laid for the establishment of a college from which no one – student or faculty – would be barred on the basis of denominational affiliation.
1874 The Acadia Athenaeum is established.
1884 Clara Belle Marshall is Acadia’s first female graduate; and one of the first in the Dominion.
Plans went forward swiftly, and on January 15, 1839, the college opened with two faculty and 21 students in attendance, initially sharing facilities with the boys’ school, Horton Academy, that had been established in Horton by the denomination a decade before. What would become Acadia University was born. Through the 1840s, the college prospered modestly. The first class, numbering four, graduated in 1843 (Bachelor of Arts was the only degree then offered), and Acadia’s first building, College Hall, was built in that same decade, largely through the dedication and perseverance of Professor Isaac Chipman, to whom the college owed so much. However, the next decade

showed how fragile a new institution could be, entirely dependent as it was upon denominational giving and very low tuition fees. The drowning death of Chipman and his students while on a geological expedition, and the loss of a substantial portion of its painfully-acquired endowment fund, nearly brought Acadia to its knees.
Significant changes Weathering these storms, for the rest of the century Acadia saw modest growth and significant changes. By 1900 there were over 120 students on campus, a remarkable number in the Canadian post-secondary scene of that era. And by this time, the student body also included women. When Acadia was initially founded, the general view in North America was that higher education should be provided for males only. Attitudes slowly changed, and Acadia graduated its first female student in 1884. Women have been an important component of the Acadia community ever since. Before the end of the 20th century, females constituted more than 50 per cent of the student body. Acadia was also one of the first institutions in the Commonwealth to admit students of African heritage. In the 1890s, Acadia admitted its first African Nova Scotian,

which marked the beginning of a connection to this important Nova Scotia community. Many of the province’s most influential African Nova Scotian community leaders throughout the 20th century were Acadia graduates. Changes in curriculum would take place during this time as well, as Acadia gradually moved away from the traditional classical education based on Latin and Greek, introducing modern languages, more sciences, and other subjects, and eventually a separate Bachelor of Science degree. More specialized education, as opposed to the general curriculum of the 19th century, began to predominate. Although it was never the intent that Acadia be primarily a training ground for Baptist ministers, theology was added to the curriculum, and eventually degrees in that area were established as well. Student life was enriched by the beginning of campus, and eventually interuniversity sports, with cricket, tennis, football (rugby) and track-and-field being among the early favourites. The student newspaper, The Athenaeum, began in 1874, and the first students’ council was established in the 1880s.

The warm attachment that its students have always held for Acadia is reflected in the founding of the Acadia Alumni Association in 1859, which has supported and encouraged Acadia and its students ever since.
Dramatic growth
Acadia faces the 21st century with both major challenges and exciting opportunities. It remains one of the select few small, first class, primarily undergraduate institutions in the country where small classes and individual attention are possible. However, this also comes at a significant cost, and it will be Acadia’s task to ensure that it can continue to provide such a specialized, high-quality education and survive financially, maintaining the high standards and rich educational experience that have characterized its first 175 years.
The 20th century would be one of dramatic growth for the institution. The student body would grow fivefold in the first 50 years and quadruple again in the last half of the century. Campus changed significantly as well, with dozens of new buildings being erected, while fires destroyed some of its earlier landmarks.

The academic offerings expanded significantly as well, with new programs in such fields as music, computer science, business, nutrition, environmental science, education, and kinesiology. Campus became increasingly diverse, as Acadia attracted a wider array of international students.

Significant changes took place in student life on campus, beginning at mid-century with student demands to control more of their own lives while attending Acadia, and to have a greater say in the affairs of the University. Co-ed residences, student representation on the Board of Governors and the Senate, and increasing autonomy of the students’ union were important signs of change at Acadia and in North America.
2006 A cadia sets up its own YouTube channel and today has more than 300,000 views.
2007 A gift from the Fountain family transforms a former dining hall into the Sheldon L. Fountain Learning Commons.
2011 Acadia and the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq sign an MOU to improve Aboriginal student participation in post-secondary education.
2013 A cadia celebrates its 175th Anniversary on Founders’ Day. 3
loo k ing B A C K It is perhaps difficult for us to appreciate fully the boldness of our founders’ vision in establishing, more than a quarter-century before Confederation, a college predicated on inclusiveness and a commitment to admitting students regardless of race, gender, or creed. It was a courageous enterprise, to be sure, and it propelled Acadia to lay the foundation for a culture of academic excellence that has produced leaders in virtually every discipline and profession. This willingness to break new ground has made its presence felt in generation after generation at Acadia. Every time I speak to a new student, meet with our alumni, or encourage my colleagues to tackle a new challenge, I can’t help but think that we, collectively, continue to strive to fulfill our responsibility to honour and preserve the philosophy of our founders. I applaud all of those who have contributed to Acadia’s success over the course of our 175-year history. I hope you will remember your time at Acadia fondly and with pride.

Honorary Graduates Bateman: an Artist in Nature, Robert Bateman: Natural Worlds and his more recently published New Works. Thinking Like a Mountain is an environmentalist’s look at the world and Bateman’s Birds brought sales of his books to more than one million copies. He has five children’s books – Safari, Backyard Birds, Birds of Prey, Polar Worlds, and Vanishing Habitats.
Robert McLellan Bateman Doctor of Letters Paintings that bear the signature of Robert Bateman evoke a deeper appreciation for the wonder of nature in countless people around the world. He is not only one of the world’s preeminent wildlife artists, he is one of nature’s greatest political allies. Born in Toronto, the son of Joseph Wilber and Annie Maria (an Acadia University alumna), Robert McLellan Bateman received his BA (Honours) from the University of Toronto, and his teacher’s qualifications from the Ontario College of Education, before beginning a 20-year career as a high school art and geography teacher. He has always viewed his engagement with the natural world and his art as vital components of his life. Even while pursuing a teaching career in southern Ontario and Nigeria, Bateman’s eyes were keenly observing the beauty of the environment and translating it to paper and canvas. By the mid 1970s, the global appreciation for Bateman’s art had reached such a level that he chose to pursue it full-time. Over the past four decades, his paintings have been acquired and shown in numerous museums and galleries, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and by private collections around the world, including those of His Royal Highness Prince Charles, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, and Her Royal Highness the late Princess Grace of Monaco. Thousands of wildlife lovers the world over have been able to enjoy Bateman prints. Books about his life and art include The Art of Robert Bateman, The World of Robert Bateman, Robert 24
A resident of Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Bateman continues to pursue his passion for conservation and environmental issues. He serves on the boards of dozens of organizations, including Pollution Probe, Ecotrust, the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada, and the Charles Darwin Foundation of Canada. Three Canadian schools are named after him: an elementary school in Ottawa and high schools in Burlington, Ontario, and Abbotsford, British Columbia. In May 2013, the Bateman Centre opened in Victoria, British Columbia. This unique gallery displays Bateman’s art and serves as an educational centre on the environment and global sustainability. Bateman is an Officer of both the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia. In 1996, he was presented with the Rachel Carson Award by the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, and in 2007 received the Human Rights Defender Award from Amnesty International. In 2013, he received the Gold Medal from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. In recognition for his work as a wildlife artist and his outstanding contributions to environmental preservation and political causes, Bateman has been awarded a dozen honorary doctorate degrees from universities across North America. It is Acadia University’s great honour to present Robert Bateman with a Doctor of Letters degree today in recognition of his life’s work and accomplishments. As we present him with this degree, it is only fitting that we reflect on his words: “I can’t conceive of anything more varied and rich and handsome than the planet Earth. Its crowning beauty is the natural world. I want to observe it and to understand it as well as I can. And then I’d like to put it together and express it in my painting. This is the way I want to dedicate my life.” Anyone who has had the pleasure of viewing Bateman’s paintings understands how acutely he has been able to capture the majesty of the natural environment. His dedication to exploring the wonders of our planet inspires everyone who encounters his work.

Honorary Graduates Memorial Hospital in Montreal as the first trained ward clerk in Canada, and in 1955 she left this position and came home to be married. In the years since, she has dedicated herself to her church, family and community. Browning is an experienced facilitator who has conducted extensive workshops and forums concerning violence against women, family and domestic violence, child welfare, race relations, and Black history, community and economic development. She has paid countless visits to Acadia University classrooms as a guest speaker on the topics about which she is passionate.
Geraldine Marjorie Browning Doctor of Humanities The late Nelson Mandela reminded us, “Everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they do.” Nowhere is this better exemplified than in the life of Geraldine Browning. Nurse, educator, public administrator, community leader and humanitarian, Browning has charted a personal and professional course of civic leadership and lifelong learning. She has been profoundly dedicated to the growth and welfare of her community, applying her knowledge and compassion to, as she puts it, “doing what needed doing” and “helping wherever she could.” For today’s graduates, she is a trailblazer – the first African Nova Scotian woman to hold many of the positions she has held. Browning was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, and moved to her father’s community of East Preston when she was a child. She attended Queen Elizabeth High School, where her aptitude tests suggested she would be a good social worker. But she grew up in an era when it was acceptable to deny Blacks schooling, employment and service. After being told the colour of her skin meant she would not be able to find work in social work or in her second choice, nursing, Browning answered an ad for a teacher at Three Mile Plains, where she worked for a year before going on to the Nova Scotia Hospital to be trained as a certified nursing assistant. This was the 1950s, and Browning was the first Black trainee for this position. Her studies completed, she found work at the Ready
In this her 80th year, Browning continues to be active in the community, presently serving as President of the Valley African Nova Scotia Development Association (VANSDA), of which she is a founding member. She has been active in and provided leadership on several boards and committees, including the African United Baptist Association of Nova Scotia and its Women’s Institute; the Black Cultural Society for Nova Scotia; Literacy Nova Scotia; Kings County Family and Children’s Services, Kentville; the Eastern Valley Baptist Association; the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board; and the Gibson Woods United Baptist Church. Browning has resided in the historic Black community of Gibson Woods for over 40 years. In 1972, shortly after settling into the community, she called the women together and organized the first Ladies’ Auxiliary for the area under the African United Baptist Association, with the assistance of Pearleen Oliver. Later, she helped organize the Gibson Woods and District Community Club. She was also instrumental in pulling the members of the community together, with members of the AUBA to reorganize and reopen the Gibson Woods United Baptist Church, which had been closed for 10 years. Browning’s commitment to the advancement of the African Nova Scotian community is undeniable, but not exclusive. Her actions exemplify the proverb, “it takes a village to raise a child.” Her lifelong service, largeness of heart, and strong belief in humankind make her a very special human being.

The recipients include Neptune Theatre, Foundation for Heritage and the Arts, National Arts Centre, Symphony Nova Scotia, National Gallery of Canada, Eastern Front Theatre, and, more recently, Dalhousie University with a gift to establish the Fountain School of Performing Arts. He has also supported Dalhousie through his service on its Medical Research Foundation and as a member of its Board of Governors. Currently he serves as Dalhousie’s Chancellor.
Fred S. Fountain, C.M. Doctor of Humanities Fred Fountain has a deep and abiding connection to Acadia University. His father, Sheldon L. Fountain, established our School of Business, named after Fred’s grandfather, Fred C. Manning. Academic chairs, scholarships and bursaries bear the Fountain and Manning names, as do the beautiful Manning Memorial Chapel and the Sheldon L. Fountain Learning Commons.
Fountain and his wife, Elizabeth, are stalwart advocates of mental health research and support, and they have donated generously to the mental health program at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Science Centre Foundation. In 2011, in a memorial to their son, Alex, a lecture series was established at King’s College in his name. This lecture series permits King’s students “to vote for a speaker of their choosing every year to deliver a lecture that will challenge, provoke and delight.” The inaugural lecture was delivered by the former Governor General of Canada, the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean.
Fountain graduated from Dalhousie University with a law degree, later becoming a founding partner of Franklin Mitton Fountain and Thompson. Currently the CEO of the Great Eastern Corporation, a company founded by his grandfather Fred C. Manning, Fountain has also served as a judge of the Regional Assessment Appeal Court.
It was not preordained that Fountain should be so unstinting and expansive with his service, philanthropy, and regard and concern for the arts and public health. These were choices he made. It was not written in the stars that he would be recognized as Nova Scotia’s “Outstanding Individual Philanthropist” in 1999; be given the Canadian Red Cross Nova Scotia Humanitarian Award 10 years later; or be inducted into the Order of Canada in 2008. But this sort of recognition is warranted by the work he has so willingly undertaken on behalf of our society.
Throughout his legal and business career, Fountain has been a tireless volunteer. He served as Chair of the Queen Elizabeth II Health Science Centre Foundation’s “Working Miracles” campaign that raised $44 million. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Scotia Festival of Music, the National Arts Centre Foundation, and the National Gallery of Canada.
To be sure, Fountain does not need to be reminded of the scope and scale of his impact as a volunteer and philanthropist. But it behooves all of us at Acadia, in Nova Scotia and across Canada, to remind ourselves of his contributions. Such accomplishments are rare, and when they are encountered they should be noticed, celebrated, and recognized with the highest honour that we are able to bestow.
“The arts play an important role in lending creativity and critical thinking to the more science-based disciplines,” Fountain has observed. This aligns well with Alfred North Whitehead’s belief, “The university imparts information,

Honorary Graduates churches and denominations. Under Keith’s leadership, the Board became one of the most visionary and respected mission organizations in the world. This approach became the model for many other groups serving the Third World, as it was then known. From 1980 to 1990, Keith served as Associate Secretary of the Board. He travelled extensively throughout the world providing leadership expertise and negotiated Task Force areas of ministry for Canadian Baptists.
Rev. John F. Keith, PhD Doctor of Divinity John Keith was born in Corn Hill, New Brunswick, and graduated from Sussex High School. Following a brief career in banking, he proceeded to Gordon College (BA, 1954) and Gordon Divinity School (MDiv, 1957) in Boston to pursue theological education and preparation for Christian ministry. In 1955, he married the love of his life, Virginia Gibb. They have three adult children. Upon graduation, the Keiths, with several other couples, ministered in Angola until the 1961 civil war forced them to leave. They went to Congo in 1962, where Keith founded and directed a secondary school that included many Angolan refugees who later returned to help rebuild their society. In 1967, Keith began graduate studies at Boston University. Following a year of research in Zaire, he received his PhD in anthropology in 1970. As an accomplished linguist and anthropologist, he quickly developed trusted relationships with prominent leaders in his international service. In 1970, Keith was appointed General Secretary of the Canadian Baptist Overseas Mission Board. He and his team developed and implemented Task Force Mission, a creative model for ministry in a post-colonial world. Realizing that national churches were developing their own structures with more culturally appropriate ways of ministering to people, the Board worked with compatible groups internationally to assist with leadership training and education, outreach programs, and relief and projects. Additionally, the Board placed significant foreign assets in the hands of local national
In 1990, the Keiths took up residence in Yugoslavia, and soon after in Croatia. Following the opening of the Iron Curtain, he assisted churches in Eastern Europe to develop outreach strategies and educational ministries. This resulted in positive community impact for the betterment of human life, providing hope at a time of social and political upheaval. After retirement in 1997, Keith was commissioned by Canadian Baptist Ministries to serve as Diplomatic Liaison Officer in Ottawa, where he established close working relationships in Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also with elected officials, non-governmental organizations, and with ambassadors. He often interceded on behalf of refugees and others in distress. As opportunity allowed, he pursued concerns of justice, international peace and reconciliation, and advocacy for human rights, which had occupied much of his life’s work. In retirement, Keith has written two books: The First Few Wars are the Worst, and Wars Are Never Enough: The João Matwawana Story. The first depicts the various war zones where the Keiths ministered, and the second describes the reconciliation work of João Matwawana in post-genocide Rwanda. (Acadia University awarded João Matwawana an Honorary Doctor of Divinity in 2010.) Motivated by the love of God in Jesus Christ and the needs of people globally, Keith has given a lifetime of humanitarian service on five continents. From humble beginnings in rural New Brunswick, he has made invaluable contributions as a global peacemaker and as a mediator in Africa and Eastern Europe. He is worthy of the recognition and this honour by Acadia University.

Donald J. Savoie Doctor of Civil Laws Donald Savoie holds the Canada Research Chair in Public Administration and Governance at the Université de Moncton. His research achievements are prodigious, and his influence on Canadian public policy, Canadian public administration and Canadian society has long been evident. Savoie has won numerous prizes and awards. These include the Trudeau Fellowships Prize (2004), the Sun Life Public Service Citation Award (2004), being a finalist for the SSHRC Gold Medal for Achievement in Research (2003), the Vanier Gold Medal (1999) for “having made a significant contribution in the field of public administration in Canada,” being honoured by the Public Policy Forum at its 12th annual testimonial awards (1999), election as President of the Canadian Association of Political Science (1998), appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada (1993), election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (1992), and being selected alumnus of the year and named Honorary Patron, Order of Regents, Université de Moncton (1991). Three of his books were short listed for the Donner Prize: Governing from the Centre (2000), Pulling Against Gravity (2001) and Visiting Grandchildren (2006). The Politics of Public Spending in Canada was the inaugural recipient of the Smiley prize (1992) awarded by the Canadian Political Science Association for the best book in the study of government and politics in Canada. Savoie has published numerous books on public policy, public administration and federalism. His best-known books include Breaking the Bargain: Public Servants, Ministers and Parliament; Governing from the Centre: The Concentration of Power in Canadian Politics; The Politics of Public Spending in Canada; Visiting Grandchildren: Economic Development in the Maritimes; and Court Government and the Collapse of Accountability in Canada and the United Kingdom, all published by the University of Toronto Press; Thatcher, Reagan, Mulroney: In Search of a New Bureaucracy published by the University of Pittsburgh Press; Whatever Happened to the Music Teacher? How Government Decides and Why published by McGill-Queen’s University Press; and La lutte pour le développement, published by Les Presses de l’Université du Québec. He has also edited numerous books and contributed chapters to edited books published in Canada and abroad. In both government and academia, Savoie’s work experience is extensive. He has held senior positions with the Government of Canada and the Université de Moncton. He has served as an advisor to federal, provincial and territorial government departments and agencies, the private sector, independent associations, OECD, the World Bank and the United Nations. In 1986–87, at the request of the Canadian prime minister, he undertook a review of federal government regional development efforts in Atlantic Canada; his report on this led to the establishment of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. He was Simon Reisman Visiting Fellow, Treasury Board, Government of Canada (2004); Senior Fulbright Scholar at Harvard and Duke universities (2001–02); Senior Fellow of the Institute for Research on Public Policy (2000–04); elected Visiting Fellow, All Souls College, Oxford (2006); and appointed Visiting Professor of Government and Public Policy at the London School of Economics (LSE) in 2007.
