Transforming the Students’ Union Building into a modern Student Centre.
Harrison McCain’s (’49, ’91 HON) leadership was instrumental in establishing Acadia’s first Students’ Union Building amidst post-war growth.
Young Harrison chaired a student committee that raised about $80,000 and hired an architect for the first such facility to open.
“The big event of the year seems to be the certainty of having the Union Building a reality this coming fall, and to see the work of classes and Councils since 1936 at last find an expression.”
– Acadia Yearbook, Student Council Notes 1948-1949
In what is affectionately known as the Old SUB, lifelong friendships were formed and students gathered in fellowship and fun. The Old SUB also became home to an earlier version of the Student Resource Centre and Residence Life.
Much like today, the Old SUB could not accommodate the needs of changing times and a growing and more diverse student population. Renovations kept new construction at bay until the provincial government made funds available for campus infrastructure.
The second SUB officially opened in 1972. The 52-year-old facility still serves as our current student hub, with space for clubs, Cajun’s store, Perkin’s Café and the Union Market, the Axe Bar & Grill, Safety and Security, student lounges, and gathering spaces.
Both buildings reflect their time and age. Embracing innovation, as McCain did, will ensure Acadia continues to support its students in a transforming world.
Much has changed since my time at Acadia University, yet the power of community and philanthropy remains constant. Today, we’re harnessing that power to transform the student experience, and I invite you to be a pivotal partner in our vision.
Our Build: The Student Centre campaign is more than bricks and mortar. Imagine a welcoming place where every student finds the tools, support, and community needed to thrive. A modern, revitalized hub where opportunities unfold, wellness is prioritized, and diversity is celebrated. An inclusive, accessible space that brings together health services, career development, student activities, and more, all under one energy-efficient roof.
Momentum is building, and we are past the halfway mark of our $24 million goal thanks to dedicated friends and pledges by our Alumni Association, Students’ Union, and even the Class of 2024! We are rallying our alumni and friends to join us in any way they can to ensure our students have the Acadia experience they deserve.
Now, more than ever, we need your leadership to help us cross the finish line. Please consider making a foundational gift to the Student Centre campaign and be part of transforming the Acadia experience for generations to come.
With sincere appreciation,
Nancy McCain (’82, ’21 HON) Chancellor Chair, Build: The Student Centre Campaign
“The kindness of those who wish to assist students like me is heartening. There were moments when I felt lost and overwhelmed. Having one place to access resources and support will change everything, making Acadia a true home away from home for all students. “

Thanks to the unwavering commitment of our students, alumni, and friends, the Build: The Student Centre campaign is gaining momentum.
Recently, the Acadia Alumni Association pledged a transformative $1 million to support the initiative and created a $250,000 matching program. Joining the effort is the Acadia Students’ Union, which pledged $2 million, propelling us halfway toward our $24 million goal.
As the grad class crossed the stage during Convocation, they dedicated their class gift to future students and the Build campaign.
“We are all here for a short time and have benefitted from the generosity of those who came before us. I cannot wait to return and see the new space we will help create for future students.”
Emily Patterson (’24) Life President, Class of 2024
Your foundational gift goes beyond bricks and mortar; it builds community and student success. Investing in our campus infrastructure creates an environment where every student can thrive. Your support ensures Acadia remains a place of growth, resilience, and opportunity. Together, we are building the future.
“I had the honour of being the first student manager of what’s now known as the Old SUB. I can attest that a well-equipped student centre is the cornerstone of the student experience. I believe it’s our turn to help build the future for Acadia students for generations to come.”
The Honorable William Hoyt (’52, ’01 HON) Honorary Chair, Build: The Student Centre Campaign
As we reflect on the legacy of our student centre facilities, beacons of the 1950s and 1970s, we are reminded of the countless memories and milestones witnessed there. However, the passage of time has rendered its age, configuration, and state inadequate to meet the demands of contemporary student life and aspirations.
The essence of Acadia is not just preserved in its history, but also in its ability to adapt and provide an exceptional experience for its students and the campus community.
Together, we can create a space that resonates with the spirit of today’s learners and leaders. Your contribution will not only revitalize a cherished landmark, but also redefine the student experience for generations to come.
Thank you for honouring our heritage and investing in the potential of every student at Acadia University.
