A newsletter for Acadia’s Distinguished Alumni and Honorary Degree Community
The Honoree Greetings from Acadia University, where the Fall term is in full swing. Through this newsletter, I’m delighted to introduce you, our Distinguished Alumni Award and Honorary Degree recipients, to our newest honorees. I’m hopeful you will find this an enjoyable way to stay current on Acadia’s annual program to recognize outstanding achievement. At Acadia, we are proud to honour our own graduates and other exceptional individuals, and to celebrate their tremendous accomplishments and contributions. Our honorees represent the highest standard of leadership in the public and private sector, and in every discipline from law to business to ministry to philanthropy. We take deep satisfaction in presenting such wonderful role models to our students. In this issue, we’re pleased to feature a profile of Heather Rankin, a member of our graduating class of 1989 and recipient of an honorary doctorate in 1996; introduce our 2015 honorees; list all of our previous honorees; and provide you with some information about the past year and about some upcoming events. I hope you’ll participate whenever circumstances permit, as these events help us to ensure that our alumni network remains vibrant. Whether or not you already have an active Acadia circle, you will enjoy meeting fellow alumni and hearing all the exciting news from Acadia. Please feel free to pass along any suggestions you might have for next year’s issue of The Honoree. With my thanks for everything you contribute to Acadia, and warm personal regards.

Alumni Profile in Toronto. Heather garnered a Merritt nomination as Best Actor in a leading role as Bitsy in the Neptune Theatre production of Bingo (2012). Most recently she returned to her roots and performed in a sold-out run of the Cape Breton Summertime Revue. In 2014 Heather and her sisters celebrated ten years in business as co-owners of the Red Shoe Pub in Mabou, which is located just across the street from where she grew up. Selected as Taste of Nova Scotia’s 2011 Restaurant of the Year, The Shoe features an outstanding menu supporting local farms and fisheries and an even better selection of Cape Breton musical performers who stay true to their Celtic roots. “How could I forget the honorary degrees we received from Acadia? What makes me most proud is that it was Acadia University that recognized the Rankin Family with doctorates. Three of the five of us had attended St. FX, but it was my school that honoured us and it made me extra proud to be an Acadia graduate.” Heather Rankin (’89) Heather Rankin (’89 and Hon. ’96) is a member of the famed Rankin Family, a musical group that combined traditional Celtic music, contemporary folk songs and original compositions. Hailing from Mabou, Cape Breton Island, the group included Jimmy Rankin (Hon. ’96) on guitar and vocals, Carol Jean (’89 and Hon. ’96), Heather, and the late Raylene (Hon. ’96) on vocals and the late John Morris (Hon. ’96) on fiddle and guitar. The family band received six Juno Awards, three Canadian Country Music Awards and almost 20 East Coast Music Awards during their ten years of recording and touring together.
“It was a very special day, receiving our doctorates alongside Peter Gzowski (Hon. ’96), how could you forget that? It was a very special occasion, indeed.”
Heather now divides her time between acting and singing. A Halifax-based actor, she has performed at Neptune Theatre, The Chester Playhouse and The Factory Theatre
Heather’s debut solo record is scheduled for release in February 2016 under the Maple Music Recordings record label.
2
In 2013 Heather set out to record her debut solo CD. She collaborated with famed Canadian writer and producer, David Tyson (Black Velvet by Alannah Myles and Birmingham by Amanda Marshall). “I started out with a long list of songs by writers I admire and a pocket full of my own compositions. Dave and I became fast friends. We hunkered down and wrote some very meaningful tunes together and the CD took a completely new direction. I’m really looking forward to sharing it with everyone! ”

2015 Honorary Doctorates An Honorary Doctorate is an honour bestowed by the University and is intended to recognize individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the academy and/or society and whose accomplishments, leadership, and/or community service are deemed to be extraordinary and thus worthy of an Acadia degree honoris causa – “for the sake of the honour”. Ron James
Ron James, proud member of Acadia’s Class of 1979, is quite simply the funniest man in Canada. This phrase has been used over and over to describe his unique insight into our country, people and politicians. Born in Glace Bay but raised in Halifax, Ron was inspired to change his plans from becoming a history teacher to pursuing a career on stage while at Acadia. In successive student performances, Ron’s impeccable comedic timing and boundless energy left an indelible impression on his contemporaries at Acadia. His professional career began immediately after graduating from Acadia, taking him from the Second City comedy troupe in Toronto to sound stages in Hollywood to a stand-up career in front of live audiences and delivered to millions of television viewers. Ron’s highenergy, two-hour live performances take audiences on a non-stop rollercoaster ride and leave them with sides aching from laughter. Ron has received numerous honours for his work. He was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for his work on The Ron James Show. He received a Gemini Award as a writer on the CBC television series This Hour has 22 Minutes and has been voted Comedian of the Year. In 2014, Ron received the coveted Dave Broadfoot Award for Comedic Genius from the Canadian Comedy Awards for his impressive and inspiring body of work.

Elder Freeman Douglas Knockwood
Freeman Douglas Knockwood – Elder Doug to the thousands of young men and women to whom he has been a lifelong mentor – was born in 1929 and is a survivor of Canada’s Residential School system. Sent to Residential School in Shubenacadie in 1935, his father had successfully obtained his release through the courts by Christmas 1936. Elder Doug returned home and remained in school until 1940, when he began working alongside his father in the woods and for local farmers while relearning his Mi’kmaw language. In 1948 he joined the Canadian Army, but was discharged in 1954 when diagnosed with tuberculosis. Elder Doug endured several surgeries, including the removal of his left lung and five ribs on his left side. In 1959 he was discharged from hospital, and over the next five years his life was defined by homelessness and drug and alcohol addiction. In 1964, while working as a cook in Boston, Elder Doug found sobriety and has been sober for more than 50 years. In 1970, armed with his own experience, Elder Doug co-founded an alcohol and drug addiction treatment program for Mi’kmaw people in Nova Scotia. For the next 20 years he worked in treatment programs and halfway houses across Canada. In 1989, he returned to Nova Scotia to become the Director of the Mi’kmaw Healing Lodge in Eskasoni. In 2003 he received the Grand Chief Donald Marshall Sr. Elder Achievement Award.

The Honourable David D. Smith
When David Smith graduated from Acadia University in 1966 with his Bachelor of Commerce, the entry in the Class of 1966 Yearbook said he would most likely pursue a law degree. He did, graduating from the University of New Brunswick with his LLB in 1971. Now Chief Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench for the Province of New Brunswick, David has for more than 40 years defended the law, promoted access to the court system, and lent his considerable knowledge and experience to community and charitable causes. Prior to his appointment to the New Brunswick bench in 1993, David played a significant role in the City of Moncton’s revival as a commercial hub for the Maritimes. Between 1985 and 1993 he chaired Resurgo Inc., a City of Moncton organization charged with undertaking revitalization activities on behalf of the City, and between 1990 and 1993, he chaired the Moncton Airport Economic Development Board and the Moncton Airport Transfer Study Group. From the Bench, David has not wavered in his determination to improve our society. In a 2009 speech, he publicly criticized the government for a budget that slashed the number of family court social workers, reduced legal aid funds and eliminated the province’s small claims court. In October 2014, David was again in the spotlight in the very public trial of Justin Bourque, the self-admitted killer of three Moncton RCMP officers in June 2014, when he ordered Bourque to serve three concurrent life sentences – the longest sentence in Canada since 1967.
