to the Winter Buzz As the Winter nights draw in there is a lot going on in Albany Creek which means we have an exciting issue of the Buzz. It starts on May 16th with the Walk for Youngcare. As we welcome eight young people to the new Youngcare facility on the corner of Leitchs and Albany Creek Road. Tim Mander has joined with the Buzz to raise money to buy a special purpose vehicle for the residents, you can read about Walk for Youngcare on page 10 and 11 Later in May sees the annual Albany Creek Fair, the event has become one of the largest school Fairs in Brisbane and the Buzz is proud to support this great event. All the information you need is in the brochure which you will find delivered with the Buzz. In addition there is more information on page 28 and 29 of this issue. Don’t miss Albany Creeks Ekka on Sunday 28th May. Join Tim Mander and the Buzz in a walk for Youngcare. We want to welcome the Youngcare residents to Albany Creek by raising funds for a special purpose vehicle. When I first saw the Youngcare sign up on the fence on the corner of Leitchs Road and Albany Creek Road, I thought that it was fantastic that Youngcare was building a facility in Albany Creek. For those who are not aware, 7,000 young Aussies currently live in aged care because there is nowhere else equipped to provide the support they need. Youngcare is committed to driving change and developing practical alternatives to aged care. Through their building program they are creating appropriate homes – vibrant, modern living spaces where young people can live young and independent lives, with appropriate and dignified care. A new Youngcare facility at Albany Creek will open soon and Walk for Youngcare will raise funds for a special purpose vehicle for the eight young people who will be calling Albany Creek home.
Inspired by Shevaune Conry, a young woman who had contracted multiple sclerosis, by the age of 33, she had reached a stage where her beloved husband David was no longer able to safely care for her at home. Shevaune and David were faced with the agonizing decision for Shevaune to move out of their home and move into aged care, because it was the only place that could provide for her care needs and simply, no other alternative was available. Shevaune’s husband David and his three mates – Matthew Lawson, Nick Bonifant and Simon Lockyer– vowed to change the system. They set out to create a brighter future for Shevaune and the thousands of other young Aussies like her, and so Youngcare was born in 2005.

When Tim Mander (local state member for Albany Creek) approached the Buzz and asked for our support in raising funds for the new residents of Youngcare, we were delighted to help. Tim’s idea was that we would have a “Walk for Youngcare” which will take place on May 16th. After discussions it was decided we would try and raise enough money to buy a special purpose vehicle for the new residents of Youngcare Albany Creek. The response to date has been fantastic and as of Tuesday 2nd of May, the fundraising total has reached over $11,000 with 40 local businesses making donations.

Rotary Club Albany Creek For over 25 years donated surplus educational and medical equipment and consumables have been collected and redirected to Rotary Clubs in PNG, The Solomon and other Pacific Islands through Donations in Kind for distribution to needy causes under the direction of those clubs. In the Brisbane area, donated goods are received at the DIK Store at 152 Freeman Road, Durack on Thursday mornings and local Rotary clubs are rostered to load containers for shipment on Saturday mornings.

A vocational and cultural exchange program:
Group Study Exchange Group Study Exchange (GSE) started through the Rotary Foundation in 1965 as a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional people between the ages of 25 and 40 and in the early years of their professional life. The program aims to develop professional and leadership skills among young adults. GSE participants follow an extensive and rigorous program of international travel and team activities designed to provide cultural experience, vocational visits and fellowship promoting world peace and understanding of their vocations as well as their being ambassadors for their own country and local community. For approximately 4 weeks, the Rotarian leader and team members experience the host country’s institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships and exchange ideas. The Rotary Club of Albany Creek hosted a dinner to farewell the current team travelling to New York (Rotary District 7950) on Easter Monday. Team leader, Tracey Wyatt, from the Rotary Club of Aspley is a OHS and Risk Management Coordinator for major sporting and event stadiums/facilities. The 4 team members include Donyque Curtis, a bomb appraisal officer with the Australian Federal Police, Roberta Ramoifuila, a Solomon Islander who is involved with counselling for family violence and other crises, Emily Seaman, a mentor and policy advisor

The team’s main aim whilst in D7950 in the north-eastern corner of the USA is to gain a full appreciation of life in that part of the world – exploring vocational opportunities within each of our respective fields, enjoying meeting new friends, seeing the beauty and areas within the district, and building goodwill and friendships across the world, with future potential projects as a possible outcome.
