NEBRASKA BULL SERVICE

A leading custom collection facility in the heart of beef country Story by: Kate Welter, Communications Coordinator Nebraska has over 20,000 beef cow/calf operations, totaling nearly 2 million head of beef cows. Cattlemen have asked for a facility to collect, process, ship and store semen on their herd sires. Accelerated Genetics listened to those concerns and Nebraska Bull Service (NBS) was the answer. Just a few miles outside the city limits of McCook, NE, is Nebraska Bull Service (NBS), a leading custom collection facility. Located in the heart of beef country, NBS offers custom semen collection as well as semen storage, animal health products, nitrogen sales and artificial insemination supplies. Nebraska Bull Service has been in the semen production business for many years, dating back to the early 1960s. At that time, it was located in Wellfleet, NE, and owned by Vince Herrick. He eventually sold the business to Ted and Lula May Herrick who operated it for 38 years. In 2000, NBS was sold to Brian and Donneta Schafer who later relocated it to McCook, NE, where it stands today.

NBS is located just north of McCook, NE.

In 2013, Accelerated Genetics recognized the need to expand its beef genetics and services, leading them to the purchase of NBS. This aquisition enabled Accelerated Genetics to strategically position their beef marketing efforts for future growth. The facility currently sits on 34 acres with a bull capacity of 100 head. There are three separate health status herds on-site. All bulls entering NBS without prior health testing are admitted into the entry facility. The isolation facility is for the bulls that have made it through the second stage of health testing requirements. The resident facility is housing for the bulls that have completed all Certified Semen Service (CSS) testing, a required testing phase for all Accelerated Genetic sires. It is also a requirement to sell product into many foreign countries. Due to increased business, NBS recently completed several new building projects. Including a 30-stall resident housing barn and a collection barn with a hospital room, lab and two collection rings. These

new additions will allow producers the opportunity to utilize the quality services of NBS. Furthermore, the fully functional facility will enhance efficiencies in processing semen and caring for all sires. NBS provides services for bulls needing a single collection, as well as those staying long term to build larger inventories. The facility is designed to safely house and handle all bulls. Custom collection at NBS is seasonal with 75% of the business occurring between February and May. Although cattle are the primary species of collection at NBS, they have also collected and processed semen from sheep, goats and some exotic game animals.

Discover Your Cash Cows: Quality Beef By The Numbers program Story By: Ethan Giebel, Communications Intern Due to increasingly strong global demand for protein, beef producers are continually evaluating ways to produce a larger quantity of high quality beef. They are also keeping a keen eye on production costs and utilizing tools to determine which beef cows are winners and losers when it comes to their pocketbooks. Cow-calf producers have a relatively new tool at their disposal in their pursuit of better cows and calf crops, the Quality Beef By The Numbers program. Quality Beef is a program focused on improving the profitability of cow-calf operations by adopted reproductive and genetic technologies Mike Kasten, Quality Beef Program Director in order to add value to beef cattle produced and marketed in the U.S. It also provides access to marketing grids that reward producers for high quality cattle and a comprehensive database, which supports improvements in management and marketing of cattle from conception to harvest. “Prime and High Choice cattle are at heightened demand levels,” said Mike Kasten, Quality Beef Program Director. Kasten brings a wealth of experience. For over 40 years, Kasten has practiced much of what he preaches through the Quality Beef program in terms of record keeping and use of A.I. on his own commercial herd of beef cows. “Grid marketing systems allow producers to be paid for those higher quality cattle,” said Kasten. “In our traditional marketing system, producers are often paid too little for the highest of quality cattle while lower grades receive a higher premium than they should. We can capitalize on grid marketing by taking simple steps to improve the quality of cattle produced. Breeding through A.I. has proven to be one of those steps.”

By tracking calves from conception to carcass, the Quality Beef program can deliver individual profitability for each cow in a herd. “The variation in one pen of cows can be astounding,” said Kasten. “You might see a cow that generates an $800 profit while another cow in that same herd is causing a $50 loss. The management is the same but what is the genetic difference? Realizing that we now have a pricing system that incentivizes better genetics, we can start making investments in the genetic value of our beef herds.” Data points from throughout a calf’s life are collected in order to determine profitability. A database is built on individual cows and the history is available for each cow. When producer’s view cows on the lower end of the spectrum, it could be time to make a decision to cull less valuable cows from the herd. This same data can also be used to benchmark your herd and progeny against those of other cattle producers. “Folks get scared when you mention record keeping,” said Kasten. “Many of us have records but we don’t always have a way to use them. Quality Beef helps facilitate tracking each calf back to a cow in your herd in order to determine her profitability. Beef producers today will often make more money looking at records for a couple hours each month than spending that time elsewhere.” “Today more than ever, we have access to the best genetics in the world,” said Kasten. “Timed A.I. is easier than ever and

we have resources that will allow our cattle businesses to be profitable. With Quality Beef, we can experience significant gains while altering very little.” In the United States, approximately 3% of steers grade Prime. At the University of MissouriThompson farm, A.I. service is used on the beef cows and heifers, which have been a factor in raising the percentage of cattle, graded Prime up to an extraordinary 31%. Dean Johnson operates Johnson and Johnson Farms along with his son Lee in Purdin, Mo. Since its inception, they have taken part in the Quality Beef program in order to collect data on their 450-cow commercial Angus herd. “The data being collected from our finished cattle will help us make appropriate culling decisions down the road,” said Johnson. “We are also utilizing A.I. more than ever as a way to improve the herd,” said Johnson. “For the past decade, all of the heifers have been bred A.I., and this is the second year that we have bred a number of our second and third calf cows utilizing synchronization procedures. Over the years, improvements in overall body structure and udder quality resulted from A.I. usage.” The Quality Beef By The Numbers program is a tool for all producers to utilize and capitalize their bottom line. Starting with day one, each animal could have a plan to optimize and track production. It’s up to the producer to develop that plan with the help of tools such as genetics, reproduction goals, and data analysis.
