The people wearing the Accelerated Genetics logo are here to serve you and we are going to do it one herd at a time. 4 > GENETIC TRENDS > DECEMBER 2013

Accelerated Genetics has their own Accelerated Conception Evaluation (ACE) index which monitors even more fertility data than SCR. We also have the University of WisconsinMadison, who also supports the development and research of the ACE index. ACE was presented at ADSA annual meeting in July 2011 and has become an important tool for making fertility selections by the producer. The ACE index is a reliable source for every producer. Accelerated Genetics monitors each

Not only is Accelerated Genetics concerned about sire fertility, we are also concerned about all factors that effect fertility including each cow that is being bred along with the environment and management practices surrounding that cow. According to Dr. Kent Weigel, University of Wisconsin-Madison, out of all the factors that affect fertility variation, only 1% is attributed to sire fertility and 3% is due to the actual cow being serviced. The remaining 96% that affects fertility is due to the environment and management practices associated to those animals. Not only is Accelerated Genetics here to monitor our sires’ fertility, but we have

ACCELERATED GENETICS IS PROUD OF THE PEOPLE AND PRODUCTS IT HAS AVAILABLE TO ALL PRODUCERS NO MATTER WHAT SIZE HERD. BUT DON’T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT... LISTEN TO WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS ARE SAYING: STICKING WITH WHAT WORKS More than a decade of business with Accelerated Genetics has helped Thunder Hill Jerseys raise strong calves and extra replacements. When Mark Blaha, owner of Thunder Hill Jerseys near Bloomer, Wis., finds something he likes, he sticks with it. From a young age he always wanted to own a dairy farm. Even when his grandpa sold all of the cows from his farm in 1992, Mark stuck with the idea of someday milking cows of his own. Mark said people told him he was crazy when he bought 54 Jersey heifers from Nebraska and 27 Jersey cows from Vermont in March of 2002 to start his operation. But, he found that he liked the Jerseys and stuck with them. Mark keeps the same philosophy when it comes to AI services. “We have been doing business with Accelerated Genetics since I started

milking in 2002, and we won’t be going anywhere,” Mark stated. “They take good care of us, and we are going to stick with them as long as I am here.” Today, the herd has grown to 250 Jersey cows milked in a double-8 parlor. Mark is responsible for managing the dairy and also farming about 1200 acres. He is able to grow all of the feed for the farm as well as sell corn and soybeans as cash crops. In addition he is starting a small 80head Angus herd that provides extra income when milk prices are low. When it comes to raising calves, Mark’s mother, Marlene, takes full responsibility. Marlene has a knack for raising the Jersey calves, and she doesn’t take this role lightly. In fact, her calf barn is marked as “Mom’s Calf Barn” and only a select few individuals can enter her terrain. Among these select few is Pat Lindgren their Accelerated Genetics Technician.

I am without a doubt pleased with the service Accelerated Genetics provides...”

“I am without a doubt pleased with the service Accelerated Genetics provides,” Marlene stated. “I get along great with Pat.” While Marlene is committed to raising healthy calves as replacements for the Thunder Hill herd, she admits that feeding 25 calves twice daily is not something she will continue to keep up with as she ages. As a result, Marlene and Mark are in the process of researching automatic calf feeders. While the calf raising program will likely adjust when an automatic calf feeder is added, Marlene is positive the Accelerated Genetics milk CONTINUED ON PAGE 6 DECEMBER 2013 < GENETIC TRENDS < 5

The success with this program has placed one challenge before Mark and Marlene: what to do with the extra heifers? “I mentioned to my mom that we may need to sell some heifers in the next year. She doesn’t like to see her calves go,” Mark explained. “But we aren’t planning on expanding. I like the size we are at, and I am going to stick with it.”

cows in Tillamook, Ore., in 1975, his herd has grown by more than 95 percent. “Our herd has grown completely from within,” Michael Prince, who now manages the cow-side of the operation, explained. Today, the family business, Geo Farms, Inc., has expanded to a milking herd of 700 Holsteins and Jerseys. The herd is milked 2 times per day in a 40-cow rotary parlor. George’s son Michael manages the cows while his daughter Callie cares for the calves. On the breeding side of the operation, their Accelerated Genetics representative, Allan Hanselman, plays a large role. He may not be a member of the family, but the Prince family considers him as such. “Allan is more than a semen salesman,” Michael explained. “We have been using strictly Accelerated Genetics semen ever since 1992 when we started working with him. We have been on the GEM mating program and PACE program with him all along, and he plays a large role in all of our breeding decisions. We trust his extensive knowledge of cow families.” A commitment to reproductive management has allowed for steady internal expansion of the Geo Farms herd. When Michael became more involved with the operation in 1996, they were milking 250 cows. “I was always involved with the farm, but as I grew older, I began to take it much more seriously,” Michael explained. “We began to put

emphasis on getting cows bred and turning over lactations quickly.” Geo Farms, Inc. works closely with Accelerated Genetics Reproduction Specialist Glaucio Lopez to strive for reproductive success. Today, they run a calving interval of 12 months. All of their heat detection is done on tail chalking. Michael or one of their employees tail chalks each day. “We work at making sure nothing passes by us,” Michael explained. “We keep a close eye on the computer and write everything down.”

“I really like Tri-Start,” Michael explained. “I feed it to all of the fresh cows to bring them through that time of transition. We also use the boluses whenever we have a cow that isn’t doing as well. We have had very good luck with it.” Having the right team players and a passion for the business has allowed Geo Farms Inc., to steadily grow their family business. Since 1975, their cow numbers have continued to rise and at this point, they have no plans to reach a plateau.

Their dedication and focus on reproduction over the years is paying them back with abundant replacements. Much success with sexed semen on their Jersey heifers has led their Jersey population to continue rise.

“I don’t plan on selling anytime soon,” Michael stated. “To stay in this business we are just going to keep growing and keep working at it.”

“I have no problem with growing our herd with Jerseys,” Michael pointed out. “I think that is the direction to go. We started out with a Jersey calf that we bought for Callie when we were growing up. Now Jerseys make up a large part of our herd, and they are efficient.” In addition to a commitment to reproductive perfection, Geo Farms does not take milk quality lightly. Since they are

and 3.34 percent protein. Today, their rolling herd average is more than 25,000 pounds for Holsteins and runs at 21,500 for Jerseys. “We work at it. That’s all you can do,” Michael explained. “Of course you are always trying to produce more milk, because that pays the bills. But, one thing I take very seriously is producing good quality milk.” Michael and George believe that quality nutrition is a key to producing quality milk. In the operation’s nearly 40-year history, George or Michael has always been responsible for feeding. They work with a nutritionist to develop appropriate rations. As a result, they want to be closely involved

THE JERSEY SOURCE

WHY IS THE JERSEY POPULATION GROWING? The world is taking notice of the Jersey cow. At a recent conference, Torsten Hemme, PhD, University of Kiel, Germany, said, “The Holstein cow was engineered to produce a lot of milk from cheap feed. If feed isn’t going to be cheap anymore, perhaps the industry needs to look at other breeds.” Dairy business owners of all sizes are confronted by more challenges each day, like efficiency, profitability and sustainability; and the smaller, more efficient Jersey cow is becoming the new chosen solution in more and more herds. “The growth of the Jersey breed is occurring as farmers are becoming more aware of the many advantages of the ‘little brown cow,’” states Joe Stanek, Accelerated Genetics Dairy Sire Analyst. “The word is getting out that Jerseys are the ‘green’ breed of choice. ‘Green’ as in they are efficient, profitable and sustainable.” Research shows compared to other breeds it costs less for the Jersey cow to produce a pound of fat or protein. The Jersey is more efficient with 25% less body mass, requiring 32% less water, and 11% less land per unit of production than Holsteins. In addition, the Jersey produces less waste, uses substantially less fossil fuels 8 > GENETIC TRENDS > DECEMBER 2013

with a 20% reduction in total carbon footprint. (Source: J. L. Capper & R. M. Cady, Journal of Dairy Science, 96:165-176, 2012) And don’t forget about the other unique attributes to the Jersey cow that go into the equations above including her reproductive and productive life advantages. In the last 10 years, Jersey semen sales increased dramatically worldwide. In fact, the U.S. market share of Jersey semen sales has gone from less than 4% to over 10% in that time frame. With a trend that will continue to increase, Jerseys are no longer just the ‘cute brown cow,’ this breed is the recognized breed to use to make dairy businesses profitable and sustainable long into the future. The appeal for Jersey genetics is global. Dairy farmers worldwide are looking at investing in Jersey genetics for the many attributes mentioned above along with some of the breeds other well know traits like heat tolerance and abilities to acclimate to any style of operation. SOURCE FOR JERSEY GENETICS During the past decade of rapid expansion of the Jersey population, Accelerated Genetics has kept pace in expanding its Jersey genetic program

Story by Kari Stanek and Genetics Team to meet the demand for Jersey semen in the marketplace. Accelerated Genetics is your SOURCE for Jersey genetics. No matter the size of your operation or the unique genetic needs of your herd, Accelerated Genetics is positioned with the source of genetics to meet your needs. “At Accelerated Genetics, we recognize that each herd has its own specific breeding goals. With that in mind, overtime, we have learned that there are some common categories of breeding goals and we have made sure to procure the right genetics for the diversified tastes of Jersey breeders,” adds Stanek. The genetic offerings from Accelerated Genetics fall into one or more of these highly demanded main categories: Production, Type, Health and Outcross. The following is a quick sampling of the sires that can meet the needs of your herd, if you are working toward those particular goals. SOURCE FOR JERSEY PRODUCTION Jerseys are known for nutrient dense milk, having more solids-non-fat, protein, calcium and lactose in their milk compared to other breeds. Because of the high levels of nutrients, Jersey milk increases product yields and manufacturing plant efficiencies.

Another reason that dairy farmers take notice of the Jersey cow is that she is a profitable producer and utilizes feed more efficiently than largersized dairy breeds. There is a long list of bulls at Accelerated Genetics that sire profitable milk producing daughters, but the short list includes: 014JE00533 All Lynns Restore Vito-ET, 014JE00544 Hocket Rescue Dale Dazzle-ET and 014JE00564 Housley Lotto Winner. Vito daughters are very dairy, opened ribbed and just spell milk (+2383 PTAM) and are a source of elite protein production (+75 PTAP). Vito is a Restore son out of an EX-90% Paramount dam and an EX-90% Abe grandam. Many breeders are attracted to Dazzle because of his high milk production (+1825 PTAM). He is a Dale son out of a VG-89% Rescue daughter and an EX-92% Klassic grand damam.

Bringing more fuel to the type line up is Spitfire, a Golda son out of an EX-90% Iatola daughter followed by an EX-91% Rocket daughter. Spitfire is +2.10 PTAT and +5.43 JUI. Again he also brings production to his pedigree and is +1205 PTAM. SOURCE FOR JERSEY HEALTH The Jersey cow easily adapts to any management system and thrives. They mature more quickly, thus can be bred younger and enter the milking herd (L to R)Forest Glen Alexanders Haley VG-84% and Nova VG-83% sooner. Further, they have Forest Glan Jerseys, Dayton, OH fewer problems calving, reducing extra labor and veterinary cost.

GeneFORCE sire Jumbo is a Visionary son out of a VG-86% 2 yr. Gannon daughter followed by an EX-91% Implulse and then an EX-92% The power of the Jersey health leading sires can be showcased in sires like Lemvig with a milk record over 35,000 lbs. at 9-06 of age. Jumbo is +1467 014JE00472 Forest Glen Artist Alexander and 014JE00589 Sun Valley Zuma Milk, +70 Fat, and +53 Protein. Power-ET. SOURCE FOR JERSEY TYPE For those breeders that are captivated by structural and functional soundness, the Jersey cow has a long history of being the one getting the ‘looks’ for her overall type conformation. Jersey breeders are especially interested in one specific trait, Jersey Udder Index (JUI), as it holds the key to the ‘gold mine’ of milk that each cow can produce. Accelerated Genetics Type trait leading sires are also unique in the fact that they are also high milk producing sires. Two sires to take note of are 014JE00621 Heartland Fastrack Thor-ET and 014JE00605 Bellwood Golda Spitfire-ET. Thor is a newly released GeneFORCE sire that is making an early mark for his type traits. He comes in at +2.20 PTAT and +6.56 JUI. Topping off his stellar Type scores, he is also a solid milk producer with +1067 PTAM. Thor is a Fastrack son out of an EX-95% Nathan dam and an EX-90% Mor grandam. Alexander, sired by Artist, is out of a VG-88% Bold dam followed by an EX-93% Berretta. He is known as a Health Trait Specialist and siring cows that last a long time in herds (+4.4 PL, 2.92 SCS, +1.4 DPR). In addition, Alexander is a high fertility sire. Another sire that dominates the health traits is Power, sired by Zuma. Power’s dam is a Very Good Impuls followed by a Very Good Jace. He packs a punch when it comes to Productive Life (+5.4) and having a very low Somatic Cell Score (2.79). SOURCE FOR JERSEY OUTCROSS Many producers in the dairy industry may consider that the Jersey breed, because of its smaller population is challenged by inbreeding and that is not the case. Actually, inbreeding is a slight concern in all dairy breeds, but can easily be managed through mating programs, like Accelerated Genetics mating program. Further, producers who are seeking the outcross genetics can look to Accelerated Genetics list of Jersey sires with low Genomic Future Inbreeding (GFI) like 014JE00549 Jer Bel Impuls Intense and 014JE00615 All Lynns Visionary Marksman. Intense is an Impuls son out of a VG-88% Dale daughter followed by a VG-85% Germon daughter. He comes in with a very low 4.2% GFI and yet is +142 JPI. Marksman is another low GFI bull at 5.2% with a +218 GJPI. He is a Visionary son out of a VG-87% Impuls and a EX-94% Country. POSITIONED TO MEET YOUR NEEDS It is estimated that 25% of the U.S. National Dairy Herd may be sired by a Jersey sire by 2020 (Source: AJCA-NAJ Annual Report). With that kind of expected growth, you can be confident in Accelerated Genetics and know that we have the Jersey sires to meet the direction of your genetic program. In addition to being your source for genetics, don’t forget to consider Accelerated Genetics mating program and/or a ReproConnections® consultant as important tools that can be utilized when you work with us. As always, Accelerated Genetics is here to work with and assist you in achieving your individual herd goals. TECHNOLOGY

INFORMATION AT YOUR FINGERTIPS A POWERFUL WEBSITE Story and Photos by: Chelsey Johnson

The Accelerated Genetics website puts the power of personalizing a search for thousands of sires right at your fingertips. We live in an age where information is at our fingertips. From weather reports, to road maps, to market updates everyone has information they rely on each day. Many people have transitioned from traditional methods of receiving information to more convenient options such as checking weather updates online, using a GPS for travel directions, or following market updates from a smartphone. Accelerated Genetics aims to offer the same convenience and scope of information with its website tools.

EXPORT TO EXCEL: In just the click of a button, you can export a bull search list to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. By exporting your list to a spreadsheet, you can personalize it even further to add information that you need. In addition to exporting a list of bulls to an Excel spreadsheet, it is also easy to copy and paste an entire column of NAAB codes from an existing Excel spreadsheet into a search without adding commas or spaces.

While the traditional sire directory still serves as a cornerstone for researching the Accelerated Genetics lineup, the Advanced Search tools at www.accelgen.com allow you to dig deeper into your specific needs and interests. With the ability to search sires from all studs and a complete database of all sires available, the website truly puts all sire information at your fingertips. As you browse the December sire summary updates, make sure to visit the website and utilize all of the features it offers. PERSONALIZE YOUR SEARCH: The advanced search option provides the opportunity to personalize your sire search. Simply click the breed you would like to search on the homepage, and then click advanced search. This reveals the options to add and remove columns for dozens of production, health, and type traits so that your results list will show exactly the information you need. You can also provide value minimums for each trait. For example, you can type 1000 in the “Value” column beside PTAM. Your results will only reveal bulls that have a value greater than 1000 for PTA Milk. The Advanced Search tool also provides many options to filter a search. You can show or hide sires with genetic recessives or filter your search to show red or polled carriers. On top of all of these features you can filter the pool of bulls you are searching from. Mix and match sires based on your preference.

CREATE TOP LISTS: By selecting the correct filters with the Advanced Search option you have the ability to search every sire in the extensive website database. This provides the opportunity to find out which sires lead each trait. By simply clicking a column heading, you can sort a list of sires from highest to lowest value for a trait. For example, if you would like to find the leading Net Merit $ sires, click the heading NM$ and the list will immediately sort from highest to lowest.

10 > GENETIC TRENDS > DECEMBER 2013

PROOF HISTORY: New to our website this summer, the proof history feature allows you to see how a sire’s proof has changed from one proof to the next in just one click. The proof history button is located at the bottom right hand corner of a sire page. It can be found just below the Daughter Gallery and above News. Click on the title “Proof History” to see an expanded window with the complete proof history of the selected bull. MOBILE VERSION: We know that you may not always be near a computer when you need to look up sire information. By visiting m.accelgen.com you can see all of the same information as on your desktop computer but in a layout that is designed for a smaller screen like on a cell phone or tablet. The idea of becoming familiar with a website that has so many options could be daunting for some. However, each search tool is designed with convenience of the user in mind. In fact, by visiting www.accelgen.com/webtip you can find articles and short videos that walk you through step-by-step how to use each tool. ANIMAL HEALTH

START ON DAY ONE ACCELERATED GENETICS HAS YOUR CALVES COVERED

Story by: Jill Strangstalien, Accelerated Genetics Products Manager

No matter what size operation you have...your calves are one of the most valuable commodities that you have and it is important to start on day one to ensure their future success in your herd. Remember, the five most important rules in calf management: COLOSTRUM, CALORIES, CLEANLINESS, COMFORT, and CONSISTENCY. YOU NEVER GET A 2ND CHANCE TO UPGRADE THE QUALITY OF YOUR CALVES’ MOST IMPORTANT MEAL; THE FIRST ONE. Colostrum is undoubtedly one of the most important factors associated with raising a healthy calf; however, in many instances, a consistent supply of high quality colostrum is a challenge. Colostrum quality (IgG concentration) can vary significantly from cow to cow within a herd. Made from high quality whey protein concentrate from first and second milkings from select Grade A dairies, FIRST DAY FORMULA® is an alternative to feeding maternal colostrum as a means to provide successful passive transfer of immunity to the new born calf. In addition, where maternal colostrum may lack quality or for colostrum value assurance when feeding maternal colostrum, FIRST DAY FORMULA® can be added as a supplement. Dual replacer/supplement application makes FIRST DAY FORMULA® suitable for dairy and beef cowcalf operations. Also available is FIRST DAY FORMULA® DELUXE which features all the benefits of First Day Formula® plus the addition of First Defense Technology™. A calf ’s ability to absorb immunoglobulins steadily decreases and ceases 24 hours after birth. Ideally, colostrum should be administered as soon as possible after birth; within four hours if possible. Quality and Quantity, Convenience, Biosecurity, Cleanliness, and Consistency…all extremely important factors of your calves’ first meal. A majority of calf health challenges occur within the first 14 days of life. ADDING A DIRECT-FED MICROBIAL TO MILK REPLACER OR WHOLE MILK IS IMPORTANT TO SUPPORT CALF INTESTINAL INTEGRITY AND OVERALL CALF HEALTH. Tri-Mic WD, a water-dispersible direct-fed microbial, is formulated to provide a complex combination of live, naturally-occurring microorganisms to enhance the environment of the GI tract. Tri-Mic WD improves gut health by establishing beneficial microbial populations which crowd out bacterial pathogens. Improving overall health of the calf reduces the occurrence and severity of scours, improves feed intake, feed utilization, conversion to dry feeds, growth rates and immune system development. All of the above translate to a return on your investment by reducing the days until weaning, less antibiotic cost and treatment, reduced labor, and a healthier, faster growing calf! For those with a milk pasteurizer, Tri-Mic WD is ideal for adding after pasteurization. 12 > GENETIC TRENDS > DECEMBER 2013

Are you offering your calves water? WATER MAY BE THE MOST OVERLOOKED FACTOR IN MANY CALF RAISING PROGRAMS. A majority of experts agree that calves should be offered clean fresh water at one to two days of age to aid in the calf ’s rumen development. Drinking water also encourages the calf to eat dry feed at an earlier age. Feeding milk or milk replacer is not a substitute for water. Though a young calf ’s water consumption may be low, it is important to have it available. Supplementing water with an electrolyte adds increased value to the young animal. CALF ACCELLYTE is a source of energy, electrolytes and fructo-oligosaccharides for nutritional support of non-ruminating calves. CALF ACCELLYTE contains potassium and sodium to replenish electrolytes and restore proper fluid balance. Blended with glycine and citrate, CALF ACCELLYTE improves electrolyte and water absorption. Buffers aid in minimizing metabolic acidosis of the calf, while Fructo-oligosaccharides help establish beneficial microbial populations. CALF ACCELLYTE may be added to water daily or administered to calves experiencing scours or dehydration.

NEW!

THE PERFECT COMBINATION… TRI-PURIFY AND TRI-START JR. Statistics show that neonatal scours account for 50-75% of deaths in calves less than three weeks of age. Scours is an issue that almost everyone raising calves will encounter. The initial step in combatting scours is understanding the issue. Scours is caused by a variation of bacteria and viruses which cause damage to the lining the calf ’s intestines thus eliminating the calf ’s ability to absorb fluids. This results in an increased level of fluids in the manure, thus scours. ACCELERATED GENETICS INTRODUCES TRI-PURIFY. TRI-PURIFY is a dietary feed supplement that provides pure, natural essential oils that have a strong antibacterial effect to improve the natural immune system. TRI-PURIFY combines live natural occurring micro-organisms to enhance the environment of the digestive tract. TRI-PURIFY contains nutriceuticals, intestinal bacteria, and live cell yeast, all attributing to the result of reducing the severity and occurrence of scours. Fermentation metabolites, hydrolyzed yeast, yeast extract, and yeast culture are all present in TRI-PURIFY and have been shown to improve weight gain and feed efficiency as well as intestinal microflora. Repopulating beneficial microbes in the calf ’s digestive system is imperative following the system cleanse of TRI-PURIFY. TRI-START JR. is the perfect follow-up to replenish the beneficial microbes necessary to jump-start a calf ’s stalled digestive system. All calves undergo stress.....the transition from colostrum to whole milk or milk replacer or management induced stress such as dehorning, castrating, shipping or moving, weaning, vaccinations and antibiotic treatment. LET TRI-START JR. ASSIST AS IT’S SHOWN TO REDUCE SICK DAYS AND BRING CALVES TO FULL FEED QUICKER. Tri-Start Jr. is a direct-fed microbial that benefits the rumen and intestinal tract of dairy and beef calves. It helps to stimulate feed intake by improving rumen function and health by establishing microbial populations which helps crowd out pathogens. Containing live lactic-acid forming bacteria (LABS), live cell yeast and

fungi, the product enhances the environment of the digestive tract which activates the naturally occurring beneficial digestive microbes. COLD WEATHER … When you put on an extra pair of socks or thermal clothing, remember your calves! As winter approaches, keep in mind that calves are generally comfortable between 50°F and 80°F, the range known as the Thermoneutral Zone (TNZ). The TNZ of a calf is the temperature range in which a calf uses no additional energy to maintain its body temperature. Body temperatures higher or lower than the TNZ means the calf is using extra energy to keep cool or warm rather than putting that energy towards growth. Calves experience the least cold or heat stress in the TNZ. When temperatures fall below the lower critical temperature, calves must begin using their energy to maintain their body temperature. ACCEL COATS HELP YOUR CALVES COMBAT COLD WEATHER. ACCEL COATS are made of a proprietary insulation that wicks moisture away from the calf. An adjustable heavy-duty, quick release, elastic leg strap and an adjustable brisket strap make dressing the calf a one-person task. ACCEL COATS provide superior thermal capabilities, are water resistant, and durable in the harshest weather conditions. Machine washable and ready for the next calf. ACCELERATED GENETICS OFFERS A PREMIUM PORTFOLIO OF MILK REPLACER FORMULATIONS MANUFACTURED WITH A UNIQUE TECHNOLOGY RESULTING IN A 100% INSTANTIZED PRODUCT SO POWDER GOES INTO SOLUTION WITH MINIMAL MIXING AND IS CONSISTENT THROUGHOUT. A majority of Accelerated Genetics milk replacer formulations include TRI-MIC WD, our own high quality water dispersible direct-fed microbial. Transitioning from milk replacer to a high quality calf starter is extremely important. Accelerated Genetics’ 19% CALF ACCELERATOR is ideal in promoting early and rapid rumen development. CALF ACCELERATOR is highly palatable and easily digestible enhancing intakes, feed conversion, rates of gain, and overall calf health. CALF COMFORT AND ENVIRONMENT ARE IMPORTANT FACTORS IN OVERALL CALF HEALTH, WELFARE, AND PERFORMANCE. Accelerated Genetics offers the complete line of CALF-TEL calf-housing products. Whether you’re raising 10 calves or 10,000 calves, we have calf housing that can help improve your labor efficiency, calf health, and profitability. In addition to calf hutches, calf pens, and group housing, we offer a complete array of accessories.

REPRODUCTION

GENOMICS UNVEILED INCREASE YOUR GENETIC INVESTMENT Comments by: Ryan Weigel and Joe W. Stanek, Sire Analysts

With the focus of people, products and pride, Accelerated Genetics is dedicated to ensure Story by: Ryan Weigal and Joseph Stanek, Sire Analysts producers around the world have the genetics they need no matter what size operation. Technology and the advancement of genetic research has lead Accelerated Genetics to make sure they have top genomic young sires - so every producer has options based on their herd’s goals. GENOMICS Now, more than ever, producers are making choices on their operations to maximize their production and making decisions that increase their bottom line. In the past, producers would have to wait years until a sire is proven and released based on enough data and information gathered by the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB). Today, utilizing genomics, producers have the option to use Accelerated Genetics GeneFORCE Sires, which are superior young sires, that will help make greater increases in genetic gain by lowering the generation interval. Genomic information should be used as a tool for breeders to assist with sire selection as well as selection of superior females within their herd. Accelerated Genetics is now seeing genomics used on many commercial herds to help better understand which animals 14 > GENETIC TRENDS > DECEMBER 2013

to use for embryo transfer and or sexed semen, which animals to use as recipients of embryos and which animals to possibly cull, raise or breed to beef. It is important to remember that genomics is a prediction and the final outcome is still subject to variation. Young sires can be used with greater confidence, but they are not of equal reliability as compared to Accelerated Genetics Proven sires. At Accelerated Genetics, we strive to offer our customers sires that fit their herd’s goals. Whether it be GeneFORCE or Proven sires, Accelerated Genetics’ lineup is at an all-time high. Now is the time to invest in some of the outstanding genetics available to you from some of these genomic young sires.
