REBORN AN ICON
CARTIER introduces the
T
he year was 1969, the place Cartier’s workshops in New York City. Here, the Love bracelet was created by designer Aldo Cipullo. Secured with the help of a miniature screwdriver, the bracelet symbolizes the hard-to-break attachment between two in love. The “modern love handcuff,” as Cipullo called it, did indeed radically modernize the expression of love’s bond and quickly became an icon. With the simply sculpted gold design, this masterful craftsman revolutionized the art and manner of wearing jewelry. The Love bracelet is not chosen to match an outfit or to suit the occasion, as was still the custom at the time. It remains present on the wrist like a second skin, day and night. The Love bracelet established new design codes, starting with its shape—the oval—and its aim to fit as closely as possible around the loved one’s wrist. This pure, understated and ergonomic design caused it to be coveted by men as much as women. This is one of the keys to the piece’s success, modern before its time, reconciling feminine and masculine. This latest version, just launched in early 2017, is more delicate, but otherwise similar with its wristhugging oval shape emphatically punctuated with screws. It can be worn singly, layered or alongside the original. The bracelet’s opening mechanism allows it to be fastened on by the wearer, encouraging self-love and independence. Offered in bracelets and rings in 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold, and with or without diamonds, there is a new style for every Love enthusiast.

For more than 100 years, VAN CLEEF & ARPELS has drawn inspiration from the vitality of nature to instill its creations with poetry and enchantment.
EXTRAORDINARY CHARM Against a deep pink backdrop inspired by cherry trees in bloom, the dial of Van Cleef & Arpels’ Charms Extraordinaire Fée Sakura watch employs several traditional skills to depict the enchanting nature: mother of pearl—sculpted and painted by hand— traces delicate flowers, while the corollas in the foreground are adorned with cabochonné enamel, giving the petals an opalescent relief effect. In a limited-edition of only 100 pieces, the timepiece is equipped with a quartz movement and features a 32mm pink gold case bezel set with diamonds and a gradation of pink sapphires, with a diamond-set crown. Its dial is composed of lacquer, white gold, cabochonné enamel, mother of pearl, miniature painting and diamonds, with a charm in pink gold, pink sapphires and diamond. The pink alligator bracelet closes securely with a pink gold pin buckle set with diamonds. The fairy—in sculpted white gold—reveals diamond wings and a rose-cut face that hints at the grace and vivacity of her expressions. On the bezel, two sparkling lines frame a gradation of pink sapphires to emphasize the roundness of the case. On the back, three flowers in bas-relief retrace the blossoming process from a bud through to a fully open corolla. A charm in diamond and pink sapphires, depicting a cherry blossom, completes these miniature tableaux.
E XC E P T I O N A L S AVO I R- FA I R E In 2001, Van Cleef & Arpels created the Two Butterfly collection, depicting ethereal duos of flying beauties. The butterfly embodies the joyful impulse that drives flora and fauna during the spring season. A symbol of lightness, it flits gracefully through the air, carrying nature’s message from lover to lover. The Two Butterfly creations are reflections of Van Cleef & Arpels’ jewelry-making savoir-faire, with their harmonious blend of white and rose gold accentuating the unique sparkle of each stone. Bead setting—used for the butterfly’s wings—is accompanied by a prong setting, which retains the marquisecut diamond body. To celebrate the renewal of spring, two winged creatures—one in white gold and diamonds, the other in rose gold and pink sapphires—form a pair of earrings of pastoral elegance. Fluttering in the breeze, this ethereal couple also settles on a Between the Finger ring, on which the inversed motifs engage in a tender tête à tête. Lines and colors answer one another to highlight one of the Maison’s emblematic styles: asymmetry. Inspired by the movement of nature, it gives rise to bold combinations and contributes a dynamic touch to the creations.

BEAUTY CHANEL presents a revolutionary new iteration of its
Boy.Friend watch, with a metal strap reworked in a tweed motif.
P
assionate about ease of movement, Mademoiselle Chanel conceived the ideal wardrobe for a woman who, like herself, drove, traveled, and lived an all-around active lifestyle. It was, above all, for her own personal use that she first began appropriating men’s clothing, even when it meant having to cut, re-sew and tailor the garments. Without hesitation, she boldly blurred the dress codes of the time, choosing materials for their comfort, first working with jersey and then tweed in the 1920s—long before other designers of women’s fashion. “I’m most at ease in an old suit,” she explained, “but not in those heavy, rough materials... Oh no! Not at all... In fact, it was I who taught the Scots how to make lightweight tweeds. I promise you I had a tough time convincing them!” Tweed, a robust fabric made from carded wool, was to have an enduring effect on Mademoiselle Chanel’s stylistic vocabulary. In her eyes, this woolen fabric, hand-woven and produced in Scotland by the inhabitants of the Highlands, had every requisite quality: the carded wool was supple and fluffy and, uncombed, retained its irregularities, known as “buttons,” giving it a more natural texture. She preferred the wool not to be overly washed in order to conserve its suppleness and even prided herself on being able to recognize tweed that had been washed in the River Tweed. The newest use of tweed in the world of Chanel can be found in the engraved strap on the new Boy.Friend Tweed timepiece. Woven from gold threads to mimic the fabric’s texture, it reveals great technical prowess: to recall the richness of the fabric, the tweed motif had to be deeply and precisely stamped onto it, while at the same time retaining great suppleness to ensure highly comfortable wearing. The realization took many months to perfect, and the eventual mastery of this technique made it possible to integrate braiding that highlights the contours of the Tweed strap—the same braiding that marks the contours of iconic Chanel jackets. The octagonal form of the Boy.Friend Tweed’s deployment buckle recalls the Place Vendôme in Paris, and secures ties with the rest of the Boy.Friend collection of timepieces. Celebrating 50 years of ROLEX partnerships in the world of golf.
T
he sport of golf has changed dramatically over the past half-century. No more wooden drivers with steel shafts, and no more alpaca cardigans. Instead, pro golfers as athletes are stronger and fitter than ever before, with high-tech equipment that can bomb the ball unbelievable distances. But one thing has remained as intrinsic to the game as beautiful locations and putts Rolex testimonee that drop on their last revolution, and that’s Lydia Ko. Rolex. This year marks the iconic luxury timepiece brand’s 50th year in golf as a sponsor of some of the sport’s most prestigious events, including The Masters, The Open and The US Open. The partnership began with a handshake with Arnold Palmer, the first modern pop icon of golf. From that first testimonee, Rolex has expanded its global reach by partnering with the world’s best golfers in shared appreciation of the values of perfection, excellence and sportsmanship. Current testimonees include Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson, Martin Kaymer, and LPGA players Lexi Thompson, Lydia Ko and the legendary Annika Sorenstam. And Rolex does much more for golf than just support elite players and events; it also sponsors amateur tournaments and organizations representing both junior and senior golfers across the globe. Golf may not have last-second buzzer-beaters, but that doesn’t mean keeping time isn’t imperative and deserving of the utmost precision. For
over 30 years, Rolex has been the partner and Official Timekeeper of The Open Championship, the sport’s oldest title and one of the emblematic Majors. This prestigious tournament is organized by The R&A, golf’s governing body responsible for monitoring the official Rules of Golf. The Rules, set out by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, have preserved the integrity of the sport for over 250 years. Both The R&A and The Rules have long-standing partnerships with Rolex, upholding the etiquette of the game and its exacting code of conduct. The roots of Rolex’s affinity for sports and human achievement can be traced back to the pioneering origins of the company. When founder Hans Wilsdorf set up his watchmaking firm at the beginning of the 20th century, he was influenced by the swift changes sweeping through society. In an era when wristwatches were still regarded as fragile items of apparel, he was determined to create a wristwatch that would be robust, precise and reliable, adapted to ever more active and sporting lifestyles. The Art of
PATEK PHILIPPE hosts the quintessential watch history exhibition.
TIMEKEEPING
L
arry Pettinelli, president of Patek Philippe US, has a problem. “We’re Patek Philippe; we make an understated luxury product. We didn’t get where we are today by flaunting ostentation or conspicuous consumption. Yet we see this tremendous opportunity in America to educate: many people don’t know about the art of fine timepieces and many don’t know about Patek Philippe. But how much attention should we put out there?” It’s a fair question soon to be answered as Patek Philippe unveils its plans for an exciting world-class exhibition this July at Top: Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300 with 20 complications is a double-faced wristwatch that can be worn facing either way. Left and right: Patek Philippe’s open-faced, stem-winding and setting pocket watch bears the portrait of George Washington, presented in 1851.

Cipriani in New York City. According to Pettinelli, it’s only the fourth time in the 30 years he’s been working at Patek Philippe that the Stern family has done this, even sharing some of Mr. Stern’s private collection museum pieces that date back to the 1500s—long before Patek’s founding in 1839. What’s more, it’s the first such exhibit in America, as the prior three Patek events were held in Dubai, Munich and London. “It makes sense in America: the number of collectors and connoisseurs here rivals anywhere in the world,” explains Pettinelli. “But a question I’m always asked is ‘how can we reach the next generation of watch collectors?’ I think this event will appeal to young people (who might not even wear a watch these days) because 2. it’s not simply about promoting or selling

our product. Instead, it’s about educating people about timepieces: the history, the artistry, the lasting value and what it takes to be a watchmaker. We’re a small niche industry, but at the end of the day, how many things are left in this world that you can actually hold and treasure and pass down instead of throw away?” Pettinelli explains that these educational events are effective because they resonate with the public long after the actual exhibit. “We’ve never done anything on this scale before,” he confides. “We’re custom-building a two-story structure inside Cipriani that will be open to the public for 10 days at no charge. We’ve got 15,000 square feet in a beautiful historic bank building and we’re using every inch.” The exhibit will be divided into rooms that will include a Rare Handcrafts Gallery (where actual artisans will showcase the craft of watchmaking, demonstrating enameling, engraving, dome clock building, etc.), a US Historic Room, a Museum Room with timepieces spanning the last five centuries, a Napoleon Room with limited-edition timepieces, a Film Theatre and much more. Says Pettinelli, “We’re not selling watches at the event, but limited editions will be available at several of the fine stores that carry our product.” According to Jasmina Steele, Patek Philippe’s international communication and PR director, the aim of the Grand Exhibition is to recreate elements of the company to provide an unforgettable experience for each visitor, as close as possible to the feeling guests have when they visit the company’s workshop and museum in Geneva. “By offering visitors an immersion into the world of Patek Philippe, we want to share our passion for watchmaking so they come out of the Grand Exhibition with a greater knowledge and appreciation of the art of watches.” The show runs from July 13 to 23. Says Patek Philippe president Thierry Stern, “I am very proud that American visitors will be able to learn more about the historic and contemporary ties between our company and the American market.”

S
ince its founding in 2008, Hodinkee has grown to become one of the most respected and popular voices in the field of men’s watches, with an audience of over one million people. London Jewelers reached out to managing editor Stephen Pulvirent for his take on the hottest new releases and personal favorites.
How did you get into the watch industry? I began my career writing about high-end men’s clothing. I met Hodinkee founder Benjamin Clymer in June 2012, and shortly after became the first full-time employee. Knowing only a little about watches at the time, I jumped into the deep end and have spent the better part of the last five years completely obsessed. The best ways to learn, without question, are to actually spend a lot of time around watches and to chat with more experienced collectors and experts. The people in this funny little world are extremely passionate and almost always more than happy to share what they’ve learned.
Do you have a favorite watch, or is it too hard to choose? The Rolex GMT is really tough to beat in my book. It’s a no-nonsense tool watch created during the golden age of aviation for pilots to track two time zones: home and where they happened to be. It’s looked great since day one and has changed just enough to keep up with the times. It was my first really major watch purchase and I can’t ever see myself without one. One of my dream watches would be some kind of high-complication, perpetual calendar from Patek Philippe; the new Ref. 5320 would be perfect.
TREND WATC H
Which new releases have caught your eye? With SIHH and Baselworld just behind us, there are tons of new and interesting pieces we’ll start seeing on wrists over the next year. The Cartier Drive Extra-Flat blew me away: to me it’s the Drive as it always should have been. It’s slim and clean and just screams vintage Cartier. The latest iterations of the Hermès Slim d’Hermès are quite nice, and I can’t get over how wonderful the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control editions with sector dials are. They’ve got just enough vintage charm but don’t look or wear like watches from a museum.
A chat with HODINKEE managing editor Stephen Pulvirent.
Can you pinpoint an overall trend direction? Trends are hard to assess in watches, especially since they are purchased ostensibly for decades, not seasons. However, the vintageinspiration trend has probably reached its peak. We’re also seeing lots of brown and dark blue dials. Overall I think brands are working harder to create more consumer-friendly pieces that are easy to wear and enjoy.
What should collectors look for when selecting a vintage timepiece? Chronographs are king right now. It’s been that way for some time, but from the lesser-known brands to the likes of Patek Philippe, those watches are extremely popular and prices are climbing steadily. In general, the biggest vintage trend is quality. It sounds simple, but collectors are catching on to just how rare an honest, unpolished, untouched watch in good condition is, especially if you’ve got the box and papers with it. If I were to give one piece of advice for vintage collecting, it would always be to buy the best you can afford. It will pay off later. Luxury timepieces are obviously a sizable investment, but if you take the time to educate yourself before buying and work with a retailer you trust, you’ll be in a good spot.

LUXE LIVING Among Tribeca’s new developments,
ONE ELEVEN MURRAY STREET rises above the competition.
D
eveloped by Witkoff in partnership with Fisher Brothers and New Valley, the curved facade of One Eleven Murray soars 800 feet into the sky. As one of the tallest residential projects in Tribeca, it offers unique panoramic views of Manhattan, downtown Brooklyn and New York Harbor. Its 157 residences range from spacious studios to 8,000-sq.-ft. penthouses on the 61st and 62nd floors. Much thought was put into each floorplan, with 20 different layouts offering something for everyone, from growing families to buyers in search of the perfect pied-a-terre. “The level of finishes inside the units is also unparalleled,” says Lauren Witkoff, EVP of sales and marketing. Kitchens feature Calacatta Borghini marble and appliances by Sub-Zero, Wolf and Miele. Bathrooms include Dornbracht fittings and freestanding BluStone soaking tubs. In addition to the amenities that have come to be expected in a residence of this caliber (gorgeous lobby entrance, state-ofthe-art gym, private outdoor spaces), One Eleven Murray takes its offerings to the next level. The ground floor features a tenant’s lounge, as well as a private dining room with chef’s demo kitchen and adjoining terrace. Below ground is the gym, a full-service spa and hammam, a lap pool, a children’s splash pool with water jets, a playroom featuring an interactive Imagination Playground, and a teen room complete with table sports, arcade and music nook.
All have been exquisitely designed by David Rockwell, famous for his work at some of NYC’s hottest hospitality spaces including Tao, Vandal and the new Union Square Café. “I don’t think I’ve ever worked on a project that was a true collaboration between four design visionaries,” Witkoff shares. “KPF was the architect; David Rockwell designed the amenities; David Mann at MR Architecture + Design did the interior spaces; and Edmund Hollander did the outdoor landscape design. It was obviously a successful partnership; the results speak for themselves.” Other exciting partnerships include the first-ever inresidence branded Drybar, and a daily selection of pastries, coffees and light fare from Baked Tribeca offered in the residents-only patisserie. “We tried to be mindful of incorporating amenities people would use every day,” explains Witkoff (though private jet service through Apollo Jets and an on-demand Abigail Michaels concierge will also be available for occasions that deserve a bit of extra attention). Residents of One Eleven Murray Street will be surrounded by the best-of-the-best downtown destinations: Michelin-starred restaurants, the shops at Brookfield Place, Whole Foods, and great outdoor spaces like Hudson River Park and Washington Market Park. The question is, will they ever want to leave home?

The inner core of this black rock is a pure, almost bone-china-white stone. “The stone itself isn’t necessarily uncommon, but it’s very difficult to find pieces big enough and without inclusions to make perfect jewelry pieces like this,” explains Cristiana Vigano, VP and head of communications for Vhernier. “It’s a color that works very well for the summer season.” The Calla, a Vhernier design of nested conical elements, is put to use here in a delicate contrast of rose gold and kogolong “links” perfect for lawn parties and outdoor galas. Pirouette—a chunky curvy ring channeling contemporary sculptural elements—teases the eye with a Mobius strip of stone and precious metal. “The shapes are very much inspired by contemporary art,” says Vigano. “We like to emphasize the avant-garde spirit and a modern feel.”

designer spotlight New styles shine in GUCCI’s Icon fine jewelry collection. Floral motifs abound in the justreleased variants of Gucci fine jewelry’s Icon collection, comprised of rings, bangles and matching pendant chain necklaces. The series is offered in three warm shades of 18K gold—yellow, pink and white— which can be worn together to create a thoroughly modern look. Mystic white enameling adds a special touch to each piece and lends a handcrafted feel to this Italian-made jewelry. In a refreshing update to this iconic collection, small flower and leaf motifs have been added to the engraved interlocking G motif, creating a quirky, eclectic mood. The rings, in 4mm or 6mm widths, feature pretty beading at the top and bottom of each piece, whilst the bangles come in an easy-towear open cuff style. Each can be paired with a delicate chain necklace whose pendant recalls the design. Gucci Jewelry offers Italianmade designs that can be worn every day and treasured forever. All pieces are handcrafted by skilled Italian goldsmiths, and the brand’s high-end jewelry collection is the epitome of impeccable craftsmanship. Luxury is defined by the choice of precious materials, the uniqueness of each design and meticulous attention to detail.

evoted patrons of the Upper East Side eatery will now be able to enjoy Le Bilboquet’s trademark je ne sais quoi in the Hamptons. Its location at 1 Long Wharf (formerly home to B. Smith’s) promises harbor views, “fanciful fun, delicious food, good music and dear friends,” to make every day a celebration. “We knew this was the location we wanted for over two years, but it took a lot of effort to secure. My partners stayed on it and now it is finally happening,” Delgrange reveals. The space has undergone a gut renovation from floor to ceiling, including the installation of a state-of-the-art kitchen. Le Bilboquet’s signature white tablecloths will take on a more nautical feeling, complemented by light wood tones and coastal touches throughout the decor. “The goal was to create a vibe that’s a little bit us, a little bit Long Island. We needed to adapt to the more relaxed mood of the clientele and the beachy surroundings,” he explains. The Le Bilboquet brand, created by Delgrange and owned with partners Ronald Perelman, Steven Witkoff and Eric Clapton, already operates successful outposts in Sao Paolo, Dallas and Atlanta. Sylvain Portay, who worked for many years under Alain Ducasse, has recently been named brand chef and will ensure that the simple, delicious fare Le Bilboquet is known for will be alive and well in Sag Harbor. In addition to Delgrange’s legendary Poulet Cajun recipe, the Sag Harbor menu will offer popular dishes like Tartare de Boeuf Frites et Salade, La Grande Niçoise and La Salade de Homard Caesar with poached lobster. A crudo bar will offer the freshest seafood, and seasonal preparations of Long Island’s daily catch and top-quality produce will round out the menu. “When I’m at the beach I want to eat fish: whatever is the freshest that day,” explains Delgrange. “We are eager to strengthen relationships with the local fishermen to see what they have to offer. And of course the end goal is to give people what they want. We are here to make people happy.” Beginning on Memorial Day weekend, the Sag Harbor location will be open seven days a week for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. (Off-season hours are yet to be determined, but the goal is to remain open year-round.) Delgrange and other key staffers will be on-site often to personally ensure a smooth opening and a great dining experience. “We look forward to seeing our many friends, old and new, to enjoy wonderful food and company,” says Delgrange. The London Jewelers family can’t wait to experience Le Bilboquet’s unique chic—Hamptons style!

ollowing the release of her 2015 cookbook Endless Summer, Hamptonite Katie Lee has become synonymous with the season. New for 2017 is her series Beach Bites, airing on Cooking Channel Thursdays at 10 p.m. So is it fair to say summer is her favorite time of year? “I love cooking all year long, but summer is definitely my favorite season,” she confirms. “It’s extra-special on the East End because we have so many great produce stands, seafood markets, chicken farms, vineyards—everything you could want is right here.” As a self-described “total beach bum,” Lee tries to stay in the Hamptons as much as possible. She loves the lifestyle and is passionate about the community (she’s currently working with the Sag Harbor Partnership to raise funds to rebuild the Sag Harbor Cinema). Episodes of The Kitchen tape year round in Montclair, NJ, but its unique filming schedule of only three days a month allows her to spend most of her time at home in Water Mill. “I know it sounds like a stretch to compare where I grew up in West Virginia to the Hamptons—there are certainly a lot of things that are very different!” she jokes. “But in terms of small town living and farm living, it feels very familiar and comfortable.” Lee built an outdoor kitchen a few years ago and uses it nearly every day during the warmer months. “Summer entertaining naturally lends itself to keeping things casual,” she explains. “I like to put everything on big white platters and serve family-style. The grill becomes the heart of the home.” The best part is the no-cleanup factor: nearly anything can be cooked right on the grill surface without dirtying pots or pans. “I bring my cutting board and do all my prep out there, and my kitchen never gets messy.” Outdoor dining’s only downside is the extra attention that must be paid to lighting. Lee emphasizes the importance of hanging café lights and having candles and torches at the ready for when the sun goes down. “I’ve been to several parties where the hosts forgot all about this and no one could see their dining companions!” she shares. Pizza is Lee’s go-to for creating a fun, casual vibe. First, she grills a big stack of dough and hands them out to let guests add their own toppings. “Then I put the pizzas back on the cooler part of the grill, close the lid and let the cheese melt. It all comes together very quickly.” Follow her tips below to achieve the perfect pie.

GRILLED PIZZA HOW-TO
LOVE
METHOD: Preheat an outdoor grill to medium-high. Place the dough on the grill. Cook for about 1 minute, then flip with tongs (the dough will release itself when it’s ready to flip). Move the crust to a cooler spot on the grill (about medium heat). Add cheese and desired toppings. Cover the grill and cook until the cheese is melted and the crust is crisp, 3 to 4 minutes. Use tongs to remove the pizza to a carving board and drizzle with oil. Cut into slices and serve.

LOCATION: the coast of Northern California, just below the Oregon border ACREAGE: 131,983 total (federal: 71,715; state: 60,268) FOUNDED: The federal park was dedicated in 1968, while the first of the three state parks was created in 1923. ANNUAL VISITORS: 700,000+ (federal and state) TOP ATTRACTION: The tallest known redwood, at 379 feet tall, located in the Redwood Creek watershed. In some cases redwoods can live as long as 2,000 years, though the average age is 500 to 700 years. WHEN TO GO: Oceanic influences keep temps fairly consistent yearround: mid-40s to low-60s. Be prepared for many types of weather, no matter the season: dress in layers and bring your rain gear. Wear shoes or boots with non-slip soles, as the moist rainforest ground can be slippery. ENTRANCE FEE: free for the National Park Area HOW TO CAMP: Groups incur a $35 fee at all campgrounds; reservations are recommended between May and September. Most backcountry camps are free, but overnight use requires registering for a free permit. INSIDER TIP: Don’t look for a redwood you can drive your car through: Visitors often ask about it, but the famous black-and-white photo is in fact of a giant sequoia at Yosemite National Park that fell over in 1969. BONUS FACT: Sadly, 96 percent of the original old-growth coast redwoods have been logged. Redwood National and State Parks contain 45 percent of the remaining protected old-growth redwoods in California.
LOCATION: the coast of Maine ACREAGE: 47,000+ FOUNDED: Initially dubbed Sieur de Monts National Monument in 1916, the space became Acadia National Park in 1929. ANNUAL VISITORS: 2,000,000+ TOP ATTRACTION: This coastal park offers panoramic views and varied terrains: Acadia is comprised of ocean shoreline, lakes, islands and mountains. WHEN TO GO: Acadia is one of the most-visited national parks. If you enjoy a quieter park experience, avoid the busiest months: July, August and September. While Cadillac Mountain is a beautiful spot to catch a sunrise or sunset, it gets busy. ENTRANCE FEE: 7-day passes cost $12 for an adult; $25 with car HOW TO CAMP: Private spots abound on Mount Desert Island, the Isle du Haut area and the Schoodic peninsula. Acadia also offers permits for group camping spots within the park, available by reservation. INSIDER TIP: Ditch the car if you can. You’ll cut the entrance fee by half, and instead you can ride the free Island Explorer Bus or bike the 45-mile carriage road system. BONUS FACT: In 1947, a massive fire consumed 10,000 acres of Acadia National Park. One park-hired crew and a second team paid by the Rockefeller family assisted in cleanup of the burned timber, and eventually, the forests that exist today regrew naturally.

ocusing on metals and tonal color, founder Julez Bryant DeCosta designs bold shapes meant to empower the wearer. London Jewelers caught up with her about finding inspiration in an alleyway, how imperfection equals beauty, and why business-minded choices are as important as design.
What’s the philosophy of the Julez Bryant brand? We take pride in creating daily-wear jewelry that people cherish for years. Fine jewelry doesn’t have to be stuffy; it should bring joy and ease to their lives. ‘Special’ doesn’t have to mean pieces sit in a jewelry box and come out once a year. I have clients who wear designs from 10 years ago on a daily basis. The pieces themselves strike that balance between grit and grace. We feel there is beauty in subtle imperfection; each piece is slightly unique and special, like each individual. My driving design force is shape and architecture. I focus heavily on metal-driven pieces. My inspiration comes from everyday surroundings. Walking down an alleyway you might see something shiny, something satin and something dull. I love playing with different textures. It’s about imperfect beauty. It’s raw and honest.
How do you bring a design from inspiration to iteration? I’m always sketching. In fact, I’m doodling as I’m talking to you. I tend to sketch the same shape over and over for a few months. The great thing about having in-house production (a rare thing, by the way), is that I can go over to our production people and say, “Roll me out some gold and cut this shape.” If I like the look, I’ll lay out stones and check out the pattern. But we’re always iterating. My team has files and files of my designs from over the years.
California-based JULEZ BRYANT hand forges heirloom-quality fine jewelry for daily wear.
GRACE AND GRIT
Which are your favorite materials to work with? Like I mentioned, I am driven by metal. I love gold. When I started out, gold was $350 an ounce; it was easy to design boldly because of the low cost. Now gold is $1,200 an ounce, so it’s much tougher for young designers to afford that experimentation. Our peachy, rose gold hue is our specialty. It’s popular now, but the first jewelry show I did I brought all rose gold and cognac diamonds—no one understood it. To this day, no one can match our color of rose gold. I work more in 18K yellow gold now, and I love using tonal color: different shades of yellows atop a gold base. I predominantly design with white diamonds. I still use some cognac diamonds, though not as often as before. My other favorite stones are natural-color sapphires in pink and peach shades.
What’s next for Julez Bryant, personally and professionally? I’m not just a designer with an instinct. We’re very invested in our brand platform. As of late, we have been working to build our Julez Bryant brand. We don’t view it as just a jewelry line; it’s a lifestyle. Jewelry is sort of an antiquated industry in that regard. My daughter, Gia Gonzales-Schaake, is part of our sales and design staff now. She and my talented team are proving to be the future of this company. Our little circle is getting bigger. Julez Bryant is hitting our stride, and we’re very excited for it.

ost of us are probably doing just fine in the toy department, and what we really lack is enough time in the day. Time for things like exercise, friends and family, sleep—in other words, the very things that we’re supposed to prioritize. One way to cultivate the precious commodity of time is to learn about mindfulness, or the practicing of non-judgmental awareness. A growing body of scientific research is showing that you can actually create new neural pathways in the brain and start feeling better every day by learning to catch yourself burning precious minutes—or even hours—of thought on things that aren’t really necessary. The hottest place in the city to begin your journey to inner peace is Inscape, which was launched last year by Intermix founder Khajak Keledjian and is geared towards finding “a balance of modern wellness and mindful luxury.” Inscape offers a wide range of guided meditation sessions on such themes as Mindfulness, Focus, Visualization, Deep Rest and Deep Sound, held at its studio in the Flatiron district. practices, Inscape also offers an app to guide you anywhere and anytime you can take a few moments to shut your eyes and connect with your deepest self, resulting in less stress, better productivity and improved sleep. To learn more about Inscape, visit inscape.life or call 646.952.0706. After making it through another crazy NYC week, you need to take full advantage of recharging your batteries when you hit the Hamptons. Making sure Hamptonites stay fit and sane is the mission of Sara Colletti, founder of Hamptons Wellness On Wheels. As its name implies, HWOW travels to communities from Southampton to Montauk offering personal training, group fitness classes, wellness workshops, positive motivation and nutritional guidance. Its most popular classes are the Core Conditioning Class held at Core Dynamics in Water Mill, which combines resistance training, high-intensity movements, muscular isolation and use of essential oils. In Sag Harbor at Studio 89, classes aim to pump the rump. “We push lower-body limits with an intense class that uses every training style in the books to increase and tone the glutes,” says Colletti. Also in Sag Harbor are family-oriented classes held at the John Jermain Library. “We cover all the ways to keep your family involved and engaged with staying active and eating healthy meals,” says Colletti. “We also discuss the benefits of essential oils for both holistic health and mental health.” To get through your crazy workweek before you hit the LIE, Colletti recommends keeping some essential oils on hand. Lavender is known for its soothing properties and can help jolt you back into the here-and-now with an inhalation of its fragrance. “Another aspect to living happy is feeding our bodies with nutritious foods and consuming our recommended macronutrients,” she says. “And finally, we need to be mindful of negative thoughts, of our actions, of all the wonderful things present around us, and of how to love ourselves as well as others.” To book a personal appointment or find an event in your area, log on to hamptonswellnessonwheels.com.

CHANGE YOUR PATH A
t some point in everyone’s life, there comes a time to hit the reset button. But when nothing is going the way you want it to, overhauling your life can seem somewhere between daunting and impossible. Fortunately, fitness guru Stacey Griffith has a new guidebook that shows you everything you need to systematically create health and happiness in your life. Griffith is a senior master instructor at SoulCycle, the nation’s most popular, innovative and inspiring indoor cycling facilities with locations across New York City and the Hamptons. She’s been through life’s ups and downs and shares all she’s learned in Two Turns From Zero: Pushing to Higher Fitness Goals—Converting Them to Life Strength, a comprehensive guide to getting yourself on a new and more fulfilling path. The book is full of acronyms, such as MAP for “Make A Plan” and LYSU for, to paraphrase, line your stuff up. “A systematic approach to life is a winning formula,” Griffith tells us. “The acronyms represent “the play,” like in any sport. You go in with a plan, you execute, you believe, you pull your team together and you go for the win. You can turn your life around, just like I did.” No doubt the strongest force that keeps people in a rut is fear: fear of change, of the unknown, of failure. For Griffith, the key is replacing the playbacks we loop in our heads. “There are tracks we play to ourselves that were told to us when we were young,” Griffith explains. “Mine was, ‘You can’t focus, you never finish and you’re a horrible student.’ The fear attached to that messaging made me a failing kid. I don’t have those tracks in my head anymore, and there is no place for fear—it’s now cautious anticipation.” With a demanding schedule spent keeping countless people healthy and inspired, Griffith makes sure her downtime is full of rest. That may include reading or meditating to videos of Deepak Chopra and Eckhart Tolle on YouTube, or it may just be indulging in that old-fashioned thing called sleep. “I honestly think the reason I look half my age is that I’ve napped for half of my life,” Griffith laughs. “They don’t call it ‘beauty rest’ for nothing.”

WE’VE FINALLY THAWED OUT: IT’S TIME TO GO EXPLORING AND ENJOY ALL THE FESTIVALS, NEW EXHIBITS AND MUSEUM OFFERINGS THAT SPRING AND SUMMER BRING. WHILE IT USED TO MEAN THAT WARM WEATHER BROUGHT AN END TO QUALITY INDOOR EXHIBITIONS, THAT’S NO LONGER THE CASE. HERE ARE JUST A HANDFUL OF THE EVENTS WORTH CHECKING OUT ON LONG ISLAND AND IN NYC. PARRISH ART MUSEUM: This Water Mill-based museum space features engaging permanent and temporary collections from renowned modern and contemporary artists, most with a regional connection. John Graham: Maverick Modernist runs through July 2017. A retrospective of this Ukrainian-born New York modernist features 55 paintings and other works that explore his four-decade AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY: career. parrishart.org Mummies, an exhibit of the history of mummification, highlights the captivating decorative elements humans have used throughout the millennia to honor their dead, along with revealing (pun intended) new technology allowing scientists to better understand ancient mummies without destroying them. Runs through January 7, 2018. amnh.org
100 GATES PROJECT: The graffitied roll-down gates found in parts of New York City could evince a postapocalyptic vibe when stores were closed. In 2014, pro skateboarder Billy Rohan decided to recruit local artists to dress up 100 of those gates on the Lower East Side to create an open-air art museum. This summer, the project expands into East Harlem and Staten Island. 100gates.nyc METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART COSTUME INSTITUTE: Each year, the Met’s lavish, themed Costume Institute exhibit is heralded in with a see-andbe-seen, star-studded gala. Last year’s Manus x Machina, looking at the intersection between fashion, art and technology, was one of the Institute’s best exhibits. This year’s extravaganza (through September 4, 2017) highlights the work of Rei Kawakubo. A selftaught Japanese fashion designer and founder of Comme de Garçons, Kawakubo thinks outside the box and blurs boundaries separating fashion and art. metmuseum.org
FISHER LANDAU CENTER FOR ART: If you haven’t been to Long Island City, Queens in a while, you’re missing out on some of the most rapidly developing real estate in the city, with new bars, restaurants, parks and more popping up on an almost daily basis. Though this stylish, minimalist contemporary art museum is outside the heart of the action, it’s definitely a welcome addition, featuring works by the likes of Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Kiki Smith. On view through August 7, 2017 is Lorna Simpson: Hypothetical?, a multi-media photographybased exhibit first on display at the 1993 Whitney Biennial. flcart.org

Our diamond buyers carefully choose only the highest-quality stones, in-person and from trusted partners, in order to provide our customers the best of the best. In fact, fewer than one percent of the diamonds we examine will ever be selected to become engagement rings at TWO by London. We know people shop for rings in different ways, so we aim to fulfill every customer’s individual needs. Some come to us with cocktail napkin sketches and hope for a totally unique ring. Others want expert guidance in choosing from hundreds of settings and center stones. But what they all have in common is a desire to take charge of the diamond buying experience, to test and browse as much as they want, and to have the experience enhanced by interactive technology. TWO by London makes all this possible. Our GIA-certified experts are here when you want them, but the welcoming environment encourages hands-on exploration.
Hundreds of sample rings are at your fingertips and can be tried on without assistance. In our continuing effort to improve the diamond buying experience, TWO by London also offers a beautiful, easy-to-use website, twobylondon.com, which allows clients to build their own rings, customizing the style, stones, shape, setting and more. A wealth of information is available to help familiarize you with the TWO by London process, and teach you about the art, history and science of diamonds. To learn more about the TWO by London experience, follow us on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and Pinterest @twobylondon to receive info on special offers, events and trends. After purchasing your engagement ring, join our VIC (Very Important Couple) program to receive a Diamonds 101 guide and exclusive benefits like 20 percent off wedding bands, a year of free ring checkups, access to the Wedding Day Jewelry Loan program, lifetime upgrades and more. Let the team at TWO by London help you find the ring of her dreams. Visit us today at any of our three convenient locations: Americana Manhasset, East Hampton and now at Westfield World Trade Center. ne element of luxury should be convenience. After all, you’re paying for the best; shouldn’t service and comfort be a part of that equation? Tony and Mary Micari opened Bridal Reflections in Massapequa in 1973 to provide the best bridal experience possible. Their son Anthony now helps run the business, along with his sister RoseLynn and their VP Cristina DeMarco. The business has expanded to three locations: another in Carle Place, and their newest in Manhattan on Fifth Avenue. “We are continually growing and expanding,” says Anthony Micari. To ensure brides-to-be have the best and most innovative experience, all three salons have undergone recent renovations. The newly unveiled Fifth Ave. spot enjoyed a significant expansion, now offering almost triple the space, including a new evening wear department. “What’s really unique,” says DeMarco, “is that with each location, we carry different styles and designers.” It’s not like there’s a “flagship store” with branch extensions. “Brides can travel and we have the flexibility to show many more designs.” Brides can also purchase their gowns at one store, and receive fittings in another. “That flexibility is very important today,” says DeMarco, “when a bride might work in one place, but live in another.” But it’s not simply about expanded service: The Fifth Avenue spot, with its elegant parlor room, offers fantastic views of the city from multiple vantages. Free WiFi in each store means brides can FaceTime with parents, friends or stylists to share in the exciting experience. There’s a concierge service and available private consultations both live and via mobile. In addition, says Micari, “everything from the alterations and fittings to the dry cleaning is done on site. The only time the dress leaves the building is if you want us to move it to another store location. We’re one of the few places that can say that.” Of course they’re on top of the latest trends, whether it’s for the star of the day, bridesmaids or mother of the bride. “I think the biggest ‘now’ trend is long sleeves,” says DeMarco. “Brides want to bring in a touch of tradition, whether it’s on a fitted or full gown. Moving forward, brides are looking for something a little more clean and elegant. But of course, with such a diverse customer base, everyone is unique in terms of what they’re looking for.” “We try to make things as simple and calm as possible for our brides,” says DeMarco. “It’s so tranquil in the salons, it’s almost like the brides sigh and relax when they walk in.” Visit bridalreflections.com or call 212.764.3040 to make an appointment.

nspired by bittersweet vines in the backyard and the dinner parties of his childhood, Michael Aram creates a wealth of fine goods all bound by an organic feel and a personal connection.
W hat drew you to art, design and ultimately to create the Michael Aram brand? My coming to do what I do was very accidental. I always loved making things, and I studied fine arts when I was younger. But the pivotal moment was a life-changing trip to India, where I met local artisans who were immersed in creating all kinds of items. Before then, I was an artist surrounded by other artists; to discover a world of craftspeople was mindopening to me.
Where do you find that inspiration in everyday life? Inspiration for me needs to be deep inside, from deep within. I’m inspired by my childhood: I spent a lot of time outdoors, gardening and simply being out in nature. I also come from a household where we entertained a lot. The beautiful artisan table was as important as the meal. So I enjoy creating housewares that I think of as jewelry for the home. As an artist, my work has always been about life, regeneration, the elements, lightness and darkness, creation. We have collections that are beautiful but not necessarily pretty, like “After the Storm,” inspired by the beauty after a heavy rain. I love going into the backyard, no matter what time of year, to see what’s there. I found a bittersweet vine in our country house, which led to the creation of the Bittersweet Collection. I had this overwhelming desire to express the vine in metal. So we did a frosted surface on steel—a lovely dappled surface that reminded me of morning frost, with berries forged in metal. We made Bittersweet an independent-retail exclusive to give our customers something unique, special and new that won’t be found everywhere.

HEIRLOOMS MICHAEL ARAM designs with makers and memories in mind.
What makes your pieces so special to clients? I’m grateful to be a maker, and that carries through our work. I spend a lot of time at our workshop in India, and I love pushing the boundaries of working with different materials and new processes. I remind myself every day of that grateful feeling—of how lucky I am to create objects that make people’s lives more beautiful. We understand what real life is like: You can’t always have dinner service for 12. But you can call your neighbors to pop over for wine and cheese, and serve it with beautiful objects that make this everyday moment that much more beautiful. These objects have a very special power; they’re heirlooms of tomorrow. To be part of people’s homes and lives, well, I can’t say enough what an incredible gift that is to me. ince 2009, it is estimated that as many as 10,000 dogs and cats have been tortured and killed each year at China’s Yulin Meat Festival. Many Chinese citizens have vehemently petitioned against the event and it is not endorsed by the local government, but neither are there any animal cruelty laws on the books in China. Jeffrey Beri of No Dogs Left Behind (a 501(c)(3) organization), in partnership with Soi Dog, Deborah Hall, Lia Lee and a network of volunteers on the ground, risks his life to do the dangerous but critical work of rescuing dogs in advance of their imminent slaughter as part of the global dog meat trade (DMT). Beri and his team made history in 2016, rescuing and rehabilitating 121 severely beaten and emotionally traumatized DMT dogs—99% of which have been placed into loving homes. London Jewelers president Candy Udell has known Beri for over 25 years through their shared goal of ending animal cruelty. “Candy helped connect me with ARF and SASF, and continues to be pivotal in this effort,” Beri explains. She sponsored 11 of the rescued pups to be flown to the Hamptons and put up for adoption—with special help from Animal Rescue Fund and Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation. “When Candy, a longtime Southampton Animal Shelter supporter, asked if we could help, there was no way we were going to say no. Saving lives has no borders. We were able to highlight an important animal welfare issue and, more importantly, find great forever homes for these Yulin survivors,” says Jerry Rosenthal, SASF executive director. “All our Yulin dogs were super sweet!” adds SASF director of adoptions Kate McEntee. “Thank you to everyone who helped save their lives. They are now all in their homes with loving families.” ARF also received 21 dogs saved by Beri and his global team; all but two have been adopted. “ARF will shelter 1,700 homeless cats and dogs this year, and they all share the same story: people and communities have failed them,” explains ARF executive director Scott Howe. “The dogs ARF received from Yulin raised the awareness of our supporters to the staggering cruelty of the dog meat trade. When you stand in the face of something so inhumane, represented in the faces of these dogs, to be able to help in any way feels imperative.” Beri agrees that bringing DMT rescue dogs here offers a critical opportunity to educate Americans on the extent of the global dog meat trade. “It makes a real emotional impact when people see these dogs; it’s been shown to boost adoption rates across the US shelter system.” It’s critical to note that the problem is bigger than this festival and goes well beyond China’s borders, Beri insists. “There is an ongoing war against animal cruelty, 365 days a year, all over the world. We will keep working tirelessly until the global dog meat trade is a thing of the past.” London Jewelers is a proud supporter of these efforts and looks forward to welcoming this year’s rescues!
