T

he camellia has always had a special place in French culture. Although it comes from Asia, where it symbolizes purity and longevity, the flower appears in countless French paintings and poems. One of actress Sarah Bernhardt’s legendary roles was in La Dame aux Camélias, the tragic play later made into a film starring Greta Garbo. So it’s no wonder Coco Chanel fell under the spell of the beautiful flower, which she used as a perennial accessory beginning in 1923. Whether pinned to a garment, adorning her hair, or engraved onto the buttons of her suit, the camellia was her signature style motif as much as her celebrated pearls. This season Chanel Fine Jewelry has deployed its utmost creativity, paying homage to its founder with an extraordinary garden of diamonds, gems and pearls in which the rarest camellias open into resplendent bloom. Jardin de Camélias, new for 2013, reinterprets Chanel’s flower of

choice with a range of exceptional necklaces, earrings, bracelets, cuffs, jewelry watches, brooches and rings. Flowers with delicately folded petals evoke the art of origami. Diamond camellias edged with black diamonds, patchworks of colored stones, sparkling camellias in marine and citrus tones, and black lacquer camellias set with white and yellow diamonds are reminiscent of the lacquered screens in Mademoiselle Chanel’s apartment. The Jardin de Camélias collection beautifully showcases the expertise so specific to the High Jewelry line. Diamonds, multicolored sapphires, Mandarin garnets, rubellites, tourmalines, spinels, opals and pearls take on the most refined brilliance within these jewelry pieces in bold and exquisite dimensions that reflect a sumptuous feminity. The Jardin de Camélias collection is available exclusively at the Chanel Fine Jewelry Boutique at London Jewelers Americana Manhasset. To book an appointment call 518.918.2700.

f you had come into London Jewelers John Reardon, Senior Vice sometime during the go-go decade of the ’80s, President, you could have walked out with a Patek Specialist Philippe Perpetual Chronograph 2499 for about Head of Watches at $17,000. Today the watch would not only display Christie's your good taste (as well as the time), but it could also be worth over $400,000. Since London Jewelers’ history is rooted in clock servicing and watch repairs, the appreciation for fine timepieces is deep in our DNA. We revere the history of haute horology, and know that today’s great watches will become the heirlooms and investment pieces of tomorrow. And so with vintage watches red-hot right now thanks to two important anniversaries, we checked in with friend and colleague John Reardon, Senior Vice President, Specialist Head of Watches at Christie’s, to offer a little guidance on navigating the vintage watch market. Like every other commodity, vintage watches come down to supply and demand. Since they’re vintage, supply is limited. As for demand, one of the biggest trends is for Rolex sport watches, which have absolutely skyrocketed, thanks to buzz about the iconic Daytona model, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. “There’s an obsession with people finding the most perfectcondition Daytona model possible,” says Reardon, “with exotic dials and the most solid provenance. As a result, prices are going through the roof with unprecedented prices at auction.” If shopping for a Daytona, prepare to compete with Daytona collectors, who are a breed unto themselves, Reardon advises, and obsess over every single detail down to the screws and springs before making a purchase. The other big trend driving the market is the impending 175th anniversary of Patek Philippe, making models such as the Nautilus more desirable than ever. Before making a Patek purchase, be sure to have the watch properly evaluated, as fakes were made as early as the 1870s, warns Reardon. “Just because a watch is old doesn’t mean it’s genuine, and

London Jewelers is one of the few places in the world capable of determining this,” he adds. The market for vintage pieces by Cartier is always strong thanks to the brand’s consistent inspiration from its heritage. With Cartier, “everything is about condition,” says Reardon. Again, be sure to consult an expert who can determine what is original and what’s been changed, and whether the watch has been properly maintained. Speaking of which, bear in mind that vintage watches weren’t made to today’s standards of shock and water resistance. They should be checked for water resistance annually, and serviced every three to five years. As with an exotic car, damage can be severe if service is neglected. The biggest mistake buyers make is overpaying for a piece in mediocre condition, Reardon says, while the smartest move you can make is overpay for a specimen in pristine condition. “To find something 60 years old in mint condition is a diamond in the rough,” he says, “and people should reach and pay for things that are of that rarity.” While investors and collectors are both drawn to vintage watches, we’re currently seeing the growing emergence of a more emotionally motivated consumer. “People are choosing vintage watches for emotional reasons,” reveals Reardon, “and there’s a growing trend for finding a watch from the year someone was born, especially as a gift.” And with a piece that special, there’s no reason to shy away from flaunting it on your wrist, as long as it’s done with a bit of solicitude. “While vintage watches do need to be worn more carefully,” says Reardon, “they are meant to be worn, not put in a safe-deposit box and forgotten about for 20 years.”

With a piece that special, there’s no reason to shy away from flaunting it on your wrist.

PROFILE

W

hen Englishman Nigel Curtiss moved to New York, he looked around at the custom tailors — many of whom he found to be little more than salesmen with measuring tape — and said to himself, “I can do better.” And so 18 months ago, after nearly three decades designing menswear (during which he served stints under Rei Kawakubo at Comme des Garcons and worked alongside Tom Ford at Yves Saint Laurent), Curtiss relaunched his own luxury menswear brand specializing in bespoke clothing and wardrobe consultation for men in need of a ‘chief wardrobe officer.’ London Jewelers sat down with Curtiss to find out more about his services and glean his thoughts on style. You have clients all over the world in many different fields. What do they have in common? Success, flair, and that they don’t have time to take care of clothing themselves. They want the best, and want something that fits and has style. So you’re more of a consultant than a tailor-cutter cranking out a client’s wishes. Exactly. At least half my clients have the money and want style, but they need help. I’ve got a few who know exactly what they want, but most want me to lead. They want advice on fabrics, because I used to design them. They want my lead on color, to show them what goes together. That’s one of the main problems: When you go to a man’s closet and ask what he likes to wear, he’ll point at a narrow section and say he doesn’t wear the rest of it. So he might as well not even have it! If you’re not wearing it, then it’s a really bad investment. So either we have to help you learn how to wear it, or help you to get rid of it. How do you start teaching them to dress better? We make a lookbook, number everything in his closet, and show him “this goes with that.” It’s basically paint by numbers with clothing. We rearrange the closet, take out what he can’t wear, and tailor what’s in there. As we make things, we add them to the lookbook. There’s no charge for this service, and no client is too small, since this is an integral part of what we do. I have clients who spend $8,000 a season and some who spend $100,000, and they all get the same service. What's the price range for bespoke items? Our suits are $3,000 to $5,000; sportcoats are $2,500; leather jackets $6,000 to $8,000; a tuxedo is $4,500. Shirts go up to $700, where you get a shirt in super 200s double fabric that feels like nothing you’ve felt in your life. Pants are around $900 and polo shirts $200. Do you have a house style or do you try to dress each client differently? Of course you have to take a man’s lifestyle and physique into account. But beyond that I like things that are fitted, that emphasize the shoulder and chest, and a slightly shorter jacket because it makes the legs look longer. These are what makes a man look his best. I want their wives to say, “Wow, you look really sexy.” But if the guy’s in business, you can’t have him looking super-trendy. So it’s a balance between fashion and classic. What’s inspiring you this fall season? My new fabrics are fantastic: There are some amazing cashmere tweeds, silk overcoatings, and rustic colors. Many of them have a feeling of Boardwalk Empire, or a little bit of Gatsby. For evening wear I’m loving midnight blue with a black silk lapel. Lapels are slightly bigger, and doublebreasted is coming back. We’re doing a lot of vests, which look great with an open-necked shirt, sportcoat and jeans, a really fantastic look for fall.

The best European ski towns you’ve never heard of… yet.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH

Few things are as dazzling as a ski trip to Gstaad or Cortina — after all, everyone’s there! But sometimes you don’t want to go where everyone else is. You’re not interested in seeing and being seen. You want to discover something new. You might even just want to focus on skiing. In that case, here are eight European ski destinations you may have never visited (or even heard of). Give them a try and offhandedly tell your ski buddies that Gstaad and Cortina are so played out.

Alagna, Italy

Nestled between Chamonix and the Swiss border, Domaine de Balme small is the gentlest ski spot in the area, great for beginners and intermediates. Advanced skiers, meanwhile, can take a short train ride to Argentiere and Les Grandes Montets, or Chamonix for the Valle Blanche, which boasts world-class off-piste skiing. A charming area easily accessed from Geneva.

Quiet and picturesque, Alagna is the most remote of the three villages that make up Italy’s Monterosa ski area. The region is wide, but features only 73 kilometers of marked runs. The rest of the area offers some of Europe’s finest offpiste terrain, making it an ideal base for serious skiers. The main lift conveniently departs from the village square, but extreme skiers may opt to arrange helidrops.

Oz en Oisans, France

Gressoney, Italy

One of five resorts in the Grandes Rousses domain, the Oz en Oisans slopes feature some of the best skiing in the area when snow is heavy. It is also a bit isolated, and not easily reachable by neighboring skiers. The town is thriving, charming and very much ski-oriented, with its own ESF ski school with over 30 instructors, and 66 beginner trails.

Linked to Alagna is the quiet valley of Gressoney. Three resorts offer easy promixity to seven beginner slopes, but again it’s the off-piste skiing that the spot is known for. It’s considered to offer the best heli-skiing in the Alps, with drops above 4,000 meters. Gressoney is also famous for its mountain cuisine, apres-ski entertainment, and spectacular views of Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn.

Pragelato, Italy Pragelato is a traditional village in the Milky Way ski area where there are 400 kilometers of unlinked pistes. Suitable for all skill levels, Pragelato has two Olympic runs, great off-piste spots, and excellent cross-country skiing. There are also fine resort facilities left over from the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.

Sonnenkopf, Austria A small area covered by an Arlberg skipass, Sonnenkopf is family friendly, great for fairweather skiers, and features uncrowded, easy runs. Skiing lasts well into springtime, and the eight-kilometer Vermalen run is the spot’s biggest challenge, with a 1,300 meter altitude

18

Above: Switzerland offers skiing fun for the whole family. Above the sea of fog in brilliant winter sunshine, the area provides an opportunity for various winter sports activities.

difference. There’s also a sun beach, hiking trails, ice bars and Snowman Land for the kids.

Les Diablerets, Switzerland Located between Lake Geneva and Gstaad, Les Diablerets is a traditional Swiss village of wooden chalets and is mostly geared to beginners. It boasts over 124 kilometers of groomed runs that sometimes still have fresh powder as late as May, and there are 26 kilometers of cross-country trails. Glacier 3000 is the wild area with one screaming run topping out at nearly nine miles. Les Diablerets is also a popular family spot with a long toboggan run that descends from the main mountain down to the village.

Val d’Anniviers, Switzerland Little-known Val d’Anniviers consists of 13 Alpine villages where natural beauty dominates and commercialism is minimal. One ticket gets you access to 219 kilometers of slopes, and Val d’Anniviers’ lift-accessed steeps are considered world class. The region is also known for its excellent ski touring and the Avalanche Training Center in Zinal. Guides are readily available to help you traverse the wilder terrain.

de GRISOGONO F

ueled by a passion for jewels, an affinity for design and dedication to perfection, de GRISOGONO was founded in 1993 by Fawaz Gruosi. Gruosi worked his way to the very top echelons of the fine

jewelry world to follow his personal vision for today’s new generation of precious jewelry. His vivacious personality, appreciation of beauty and spirit of adventure are evident in every layer of de GRISOGONO jewelry, from design through craftsmanship. His first creation, earrings created for the Begun Salimah Aga Khan, was the perfect introduction to the world of international celebrity and jet-set glamour that fueled the success of this innovative jewelry house. The tone was set and the first de GRISOGONO boutique was opened in Geneva in 1993. Geneva was the ideal base, with its heritage of jewelry making dating back to the Renaissance. In 1995, Fawaz Gruosi took over sole control of the business and soon afterwards de GRISOGONO catapulted to worldwide renown. Today the brand has 16 boutiques around the world in Paris, London, Moscow, Rome, Hong Kong, Singapore, New York, Gstaad, Geneva, Porto Cervo in Sardinia, and its most recent opening in Miami at the beautiful Bal Harbour Shops. De GRISOGONO creates both one-of-a-kind jewels as well as more ‘boutique’ accessible and repeatable fine jewelry, along with watches. Each collection bears the inimitable de GRISOGONO hallmarks of style: seriously playful, flirtatiously determined, in powerful shapes and startling colors. At the heart of each design is one or several of the rarest, most spectacular gemstones available on the

market. It is this combination of avant-garde design that sets de GRISOGONO apart. It is a testament to Fawaz Gruosi’s vision, character and his own dedication to perfection for de GRISOGONO to be the best it can be. “The heart of our design is where the beauty of each creation takes precedence over any pre-defined boundaries.”

n Greek mythology, Iris was a messenger of the gods, dashing with the lightness of wind from the height of the clouds to the deepest fathoms of the ocean. In between, she created rainbows. Iris lent her name to the newest collection by Brazilian jewelry house H.Stern, following an inspiring journey to the bottom of the sea by the design team. They were fascinated by the varied ocean life with its abstract shapes, richness of color and fluidity of movements. Seashells, with their various textures, also fueled the designers’ imaginations. The aquatic inspiration behind the Iris collection is subtle, cloaked with attention to detail and fine design, and some of the best features of the collection are secret treasures only known by the wearer. H.Stern’s craftsmen make and mold every piece by hand, using jewels typical of the Victorian era. Highlights from the Iris collection include Mya Maris, rings and earrings molded into half circles of 18-karat rose gold that mimic the spiraling shapes

of seashells. The Mytilus line is named for a genus of mollusk that inspired the design team with its dark shell, translated in teardrop earrings covered with black diamonds. The Tellina line is named for elongated, oval-shaped shells, which inspired long earrings formed by a sequence of frames set in rose gold with traces of Noble Gold and diamonds arranged in a pendulum. Hans Stern founded H.Stern Jewelers in 1945, and it has gone on to become the largest jeweler in Latin America and one of the most recognized jewelry brands in the world. Stern opened his first shop in Rio de Janeiro to catch travelers aboard luxury cruise ships. Soon thereafter, in 1964, Time magazine called Hans Stern “the king of colored gemstones.” Today the company is known for its presence in 32 countries around the world, as well as its technological innovation, which reached a high point in 2004 with the development of Stern Star, a diamond of exclusive organic and asymmetric cut.

RECOGNITION

Tryna Kochanek, International WJA President, with Candy Udell, President of London Jewelers

WJA HONORS T

CANDY UDELL

his summer London Jewelers’ president Candy Udell received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Women’s Jewelry Association. Held at Pier 60 at Chelsea Piers, the awards event included cocktails, dinner and a special after-party for over 700 members of the jewelry industry. The award paid tribute to Udell’s 30 years at London Jewelers and her contributions to the industry as a whole. After marrying college sweetheart Mark Udell, in 1973 the couple took over operations of what was then a small family business with one location in Glen Cove. Since then, with her visionary know-how and creativity, she has helped to cultivate London Jewelers into the largest independent jewelry retailer in the country, solidified relationships with world-renown luxury brands, all while maintaining the company’s high standards of customer service we’ve been known for since our founding in 1926. Candy’s mother- and father-in-law were in attendance at the ages of 92 and 95, respectively, to see her accept this prestigious award. “Candy was chosen for many reasons, first of which is that she’s an

incredibly successful woman in an industry where there are very few women in a leadership capacity,” said WJA president-elect Andrea Hansen. “She’s been an amazing example — for two generations — of how a woman can be successful in this industry.” Beyond her special status as a role model, Candy is a fantastic company leader, Hansen continued. “Candy leads by example. She’s one of the hardestworking people in this business. She’s very hands-on with a staff of over 200, which has the opportunity to work with and learn from her directly. “She’s also very charitable, and uses the business to promote a lot of her causes, so the example she’s setting is to be responsible, engaged, professional and respectful, and that’s what she does every day.” Speaking of philanthropy, the event also included an auction of jewelry, services and experiences benefitting the WJA’s scholarship funds, with the organization saying it planned to award over $30,000 in college scholarships this year. Congratulations Candy!

idway between Southampton and East Hampton is a special winery with a decidedly European character. Founded in 1988 by German-born Christian Wölffer, Wölffer Estate Vineyard is a 55acre vineyard located in Sagaponack that has fast become the benchmark of Long Island winemaking. Located on the same property as Wölffer Estate Stables, a premier equestrian facility that lends the iconic horse imagery to Wölffer Estate Vineyard’s elegant packaging, they produce 16,000 to 20,000 cases each year on what were former potato fields. Chardonnays, merlots and a dry rosé are the vineyard’s specialties, all created using sustainable farming practices. Wölffer’s success is largely due to its one and only winemaker. Roman Roth was born in the Black Forest region of Germany and worked in Carneros, California and New South Wales, Australia, before joining Wölffer. When he arrived, Roth found 28 acres of vineyards and rudimentary winemaking facilities. He established a temporary winery and tasting room and quickly began the exacting task of producing the winery’s first vintage, a chardonnay. Over the next several years, Roth managed the cultivation and expansion of the vineyard in addition to all aspects of vinification, ultimately producing wines that embody the essence of the Long Island appellation — ripe fruit and natural acidity born of a unique terroir. Under Roth’s meticulous direction, the winery has established its distinctive character — European elegance combined with the typicity of Long Island. Roth’s contribution to quality winemaking on Long Island was recognized at the April 2003 East End Food & Wine Awards (judged by the American Sommelier Society), where he was named Winemaker of the Year. In October of the same year, the Wölffer Estate Selection Merlot 2000 was poured at Wine Spectator’s Critics Choice Grand Tasting, which featured 240 of the world’s best wineries. A popular spot for weddings and other special events, Wölffer is also a regular Hamptons hotspot. Thursday and Friday nights feature live jazz, cheese and charcuterie plates, and wine by the glass. The newly refurbished Wölffer Wine Stand, located at 3312 Montauk Highway, also offers wine and music on Friday evenings. Visit wolffer.com for more information.

TWO BY LONDON U

nveiled in fall 2011, TWO by LONDON: The Engagement Shop at London Jewelers has transformed the way couples shop for diamonds. With interactive kiosks and a welcoming environment that encourages hands-on exploration, creating the perfect ring has never been easier or more exciting — the power is literally in your hands. People shop for rings in many different ways. Some come to us with sketches on a cocktail napkin and a dream for a totally unique ring. Others want step-by-step expert guidance. But what they all have in common is the desire to take charge of the diamond-buying experience, to test and browse as much as they want without a hovering salesperson, and to have the selection experience enhanced by interactive technology. TWO by LONDON makes it all possible. TWO by LONDON, located at Americana Manhasset, is often likened more to an Apple store than a traditional diamond store. While our staff of GIA-certified experts are right there when you want them, the welcoming environment is designed to make the process of buying rings as smooth, transparent and enjoyable as possible. The selection of metals and styles at TWO by LONDON is as dazzling as the stones. Ladies’ metals include yellow, white and rose gold, plus platinum. Styles include prong, channel set, pavé and more, all of which are available in either eternity style (diamonds cover the circumference of the

ring) or halfway around. Diamond shapes range from round, princess, cushion and radiant to emerald, Asscher and oval. All stone shapes, qualities, sizes and metals are interchangeable, meaning if there is a band in the case you love but you don’t love the stone shape, we can add the stone in whatever shape you wish. Men’s bands come in the same golds as ladies’ bands, plus palladium, cobalt, titanium, tungsten, stainless steel and ceramic. All of the men’s bands can also be made for a woman. Those excited by the prospect of customization will find that TWO by LONDON provides all the tools they need to create a unique ring. At the computer kiosks, simply enter the code found on each sample ring and start playing with the virtually endless possiblities. Change the cut or carat size of the diamond, add trillions or pavé, or add a birthstone or other colored gemstones. Customize the metal or setting. You can also build your own ring using 3D modeling software, even bring in a drawing or vintage photograph, then take a front row seat to the creative process with video and photo updates documenting the ring’s journey from inspired idea, through our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and right to the jeweler’s workbench. Our vast selection also applies to budgets, with engagement rings starting at just $1,500.

ENGAGEMENTS

A LOVE STORY BEGINS AT TWO BY LONDON L

ike most soon-to-be fiancés, picking the perfect ring felt like a daunting task. When I first started looking, I had a vision of the perfect ring, but wasn’t sure how to find it. After trying mainstream retailers and the diamond district, I was unhappy and knew I wanted a more personalized experience with a jeweler I could trust. I found the perfect ring at TWO by LONDON, where I worked very closely with the GIA-certified gemologists. They helped me create the most stunning ring I’ve ever seen. I felt a sense of ease knowing that the team was helping me create a masterpiece. The team went above and beyond

anything I had ever imagined. I was so inspired by the service I received that I decided to propose to Maria right in the store. TWO by LONDON helped make this a reality; not only did they manage to set up a display window, but they went above and beyond by getting flowers and rose petals in Maria’s favorite color, and also made a path leading up to the special window display. Inside, there was a sign they had created that read, “Maria, Mariano has a question for you...” Not only did I manage to get the most stunning engagement ring and an unforgettable day at TWO by LONDON, but I also forged a relationship that will last a lifetime... not to mention, Maria said yes!

TRUFFLE HUNTING TOURS

C

ulinary travel — or ‘foodie tours,’ as they’re often called — is a booming market in the travel industry. Whereas good food was once a pleasant adjunct to a sightseeing vacation, for some it has now become the entire focus of the trip. One of the more specific foodie tours, which combines a hike in the woods with the thrill of mining for treasure, is the Italian truffle hunt: a quest for the so-called diamond of the kitchen. Truffles, the fruiting body of a subterranean fungus found near the roots of trees, have been prized in Italy since the days of the Roman Empire. Pigs were once used to sniff out truffles, but they had the nagging tendency to chow down as soon as they found something. Truffle hogs were ultimately banned in Italy, and today dogs are used; they make for more pleasant hunting companions. Plus, they more than earn their own keep: in 2007 a Macau casino owner paid $330,000 for a 3.3-pound white truffle found by a dog named Rocco. “Kids really enjoy truffle hunting, as they get to chase after a dog as

they romp through the woods,” says Carrie Curtis of Le Baccanti Tours (lebaccanti.com), which organizes truffle hunts in the Tuscany and Umbria regions. “And the most interesting part of a truffle hunt is the magical moment when the dog picks up the scent and starts excitedly digging. Then there’s a great moment of anticipation as the truffle hunter pulls or digs out the truffle and sees its shape, smell, size and overall quality.” An entire crash course in truffles is available from Tartufi Bianconi (tartufibianconi.it), which has been in the truffle business since 1990 and operating tours for the past 10 years. Its truffle hunts in the Tiber Valley are followed by lessons in processing, cooking, and how to distinguish the taste of different truffle varieties. It even operates a small musuem with “oddities and curiosities related to the precious tuber,” says Gabriella Bianconi. So what happens to the truffles found on a hunt? Depending on the nature of the tour, they may be part of a post-hunt feast, or can be sold on the market. If that doesn’t sound nearly as fun as eating your own find, keep in mind that these diamonds of the kitchen can fetch precious-gem prices.

Entitled Chagall: Love, War, and Exile, the exhibit focuses on the period from the 1930s to 1948, when the artist lived in exile from his native Russia. It includes 30 paintings and 24 works on paper, as well as selected letters, poems, photos and ephemera. TREASURES

THE PARIS

FLEA MARKET

M

erely prefacing the phrase ‘flea market’ with Paris conjures up all sorts of stylish associations. After all, nothing is more chic than having party guests ask where you got some exquisite object and casually responding “Oh, at the Paris Flea Market.” Billed as the world’s largest flea market with origins going back to the 1870s, Les Puces de Saint-Ouen, known colloquially as Les Puces (The Fleas) features 3,000 dealers and hosts up to 180,000 visitors every weekend. The event encompasses 12 separate art and antiques markets, each with its own ambience and focus. Antica features furniture and objects from the 18th and 19th centuries; Biron highlights Asian art; Dauphine hosts the Booksellers’ Square; Malassis has antiques and decorative items from the 17th to 20th centuries; Paul Bert is considered the trend market for decorative items; and Serpette is where the art buffs go. The streets surrounding these markets also feature a seemingly endless array of dealers in art, furniture and curiosities.

As for the haggling, here are some tips from ParisPerfect.com (which can also help you find an apartment rental): Remember that everything is negotiable. It helps to have someone around who is great at saying in a loud voice that we don’t need this mirror at all. If the dealers think they might lose the sale, it speeds up the negotiation. You don’t have to complete the sale on the spot; get a mobile phone number and call the dealer the next day to negotiate. If they haven’t had a big weekend they are more willing to give a good discount. Contact a shipper, such as Hedley’s Humpers, beforehand and they can give you tickets to mark antiques and pick them up the next day. Les Puces is held every Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 6 and Monday from 11 to 5. The weekend is your best bet, as many dealers are not open on Monday. For more infomation, including access, market maps and directions, visit marcheauxpuces-saintouen.com. Happy hunting!

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT

JAMIE WOLF

Jamie Wolf is one of the exciting new designers we’ve welcomed into the store, with a background as unique as her designs. We sat down to learn more about the woman behind this beautiful new collection. LJ: You were a professional ballet dancer for many years. How does your ballet background influence your sense of style and approach to jewelry?

JW: As a dancer for New York City Ballet, I learned very early on to appreciate and understand the importance of shape and form. My training also taught me to love the art of storytelling. I have always been drawn to the idea of creating something tangible that not only evokes emotion, but also has a longer lifespan than the immediacy that dance is often constrained by. Jewelry design allows me to tell a story through artistic expression, but the end result can last a lifetime. Both dance and design depend on the coordination of many elements. The challenge is making it look easy. I strive to create simplicity in my work, but simplicity is often much more difficult to accomplish than complexity. Good design, much like good ballet, must look completely effortless. As my ballet teacher says, “No one wants to see how hard you’re working.”

LJ: What made you want to turn to jewelry after dance, as opposed to fashion, shoes or handbags, for example? JW: What’s exciting about jewelry design is that it’s possible to alter, mold, reinterpret and reconstruct everything you do. In that way, jewelry has a dynamic quality that is very similar to the intrinsic values of dance. Jewelry also has a timeless quality that is not found in ready-to-wear. It can transcend decades of fashion trends and be just as relevant, and evoke just as much of a statement from one era to the next. Most of my customers have a piece of jewelry that they’ve kept for years. It’s a highly personal piece that is usually representative of a memorable moment in their past. LJ: What are your design influences? JW: I believe that femininity is timeless and that beauty is found in the finest details. My aim is to translate this femininity and detail into pieces that are chic and relevant. Each season the collection evolves with this intent, to work with the classically beautiful and articulate it with a sophisticated edge.

LJ: What makes your pieces different from other designer collections? JW: My designs are intrinsically extensions of myself. I produce pieces based on imagery that inspires me, so in essence, my work is based on my own personal interpretation of things such as femininity, sophistication and style. The way I define these ideals will inherently be different from the way someone else defines them.

LJ: Tell us what’s new for fall 2013. JW: One of the hallmarks of my collection is this notion of balancing luxury with utility. We speak to a consumer who appreciates heightened design, but who also seeks pieces she can collect and wear every day. For that reason, each season I add new silhouettes and stone options that speak to that ethos. My hope is to produce pieces I know clients will enjoy for everyday wear and that transition seamlessly from day to night. For fall, I have been inspired by tsavorite, which is a stone I have not used in the past. I was first drawn to tsavorite for its rich and beautiful color. I like that it is still considered somewhat of an esoteric gemstone.

DINING

CAVIAR

C

DREAMS

aspian Sea Almas Osetra Caviar is a freak of nature, a happy accident whose result is pure heaven for gourmets. There are 400 species of sturgeon in the world, but only three — beluga, oscierte and sevruga — are used for caviar. But here’s where the numbers get even smaller: Caviar that’s classified as Caspian Sea Almas Osetra comes down to the genetic makeup of an individual fish farmed at just the right moment, resulting in the world’s rarest and finest caviar. Perhaps one tin out of 20,000 attains this level of perfection. The dozen or two tins that Caviar Russe gets hold of annually sell for $595 per one-ounce tin, just enough to give two people each a few memorable bites. Founded in 1997 by longtime caviar importers, Caviar Russe is New York’s premier boutique and restaurant for lovers of this singular delicacy. Caviar has surprising variation in color, texture and flavor, and Caviar Russe specializes in matching caviar to individual palates, says

managing director Ilya Panchernikov. Caviar’s cultivation goes back to ancient Persian, Greek and Roman civilizations, though it is most closely associated with Russian czars, who had the easiest access to caviar-producing sturgeon. Nutritionally it is a mixture of the healthy and the less so; while high in sodium, it’s also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and is often used in skin creams due to its rejuvenating properties. Led by executive chef Christopher Agnew, who has worked under JeanMarie Lacroix and Alain Ducasse, Caviar Russe’s restaurant menu is completely unique, says Panchernikov. “Nobody in the world has the culinary talent combined with the ability to play with the variety that we have. When these two come together, we can assure you that this menu does not exist anywhere else in the world.” Caviar Russe is located at 538 Madison Avenue, between 54th and 55th Streets. For reservations, call 212.980.5908.

aim Medine was raised in a jewelry family, and so it’s perfectly fitting that the name of his line — Khai Khai — comes from a childhood nickname. In using it, Medine pays tribute to “the pure, deep and raw inner youth that still manifests within all of us.” The very essence of youth is the driving force of his creative inspiration. “The Khai Khai customer is an informed, strong intellectual hoping to feel perennially young at heart,” Medine has stated. Although he works with classic metals and stones, his designs are witty and whimsical. It’s a combination that results in pieces that bridge the gap between costume and fine jewelry. Just launched in February and priced from $600 to $3,000, the Khai Khai collection currently consists of about 75 pieces including rings, charms, earrings and necklaces. Medine’s clever approach shows in his

ability to transform commonplace symbols such as an exclamation mark — not to mention social media staples such as @ and # — into beautiful pieces of jeweler’s art. There’s a sense of fun and humor to the collection that harkens back to the its youthful name and spirit. “I always knew I wanted to do something creative because of the way I was brought up,” Medine says. His father Mois Medine is the founder of Mark Henry Alexandrite Jewelry Collection, which specializes in the ultrarare and expensive Alexandrite stone. And there are more creative people in the family. You might just recognize his sister Leandra Medine, founder of the popular style blog The Man Repeller. She, along with his mother, are often solicited for their opinions on his new creations. When a piece speaks to both of them, he knows he got it right.

LUSTGARTEN

n June 6th London Jewelers welcomed designer Ippolita and members of the Lustgarten Foundation for a celebration unveiling the exclusive pendant and earring designs to support the fight against pancreatic cancer, the nation’s fourth-leading cause of cancer deaths. Guests who came together in support of this important issue were served light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres and even had the opportunity to interact with Ippolita herself. Ippolita’s Snowman earrings and drop pendant, both in dark amethyst, are available at any of London Jewelers’ five locations, as well as online. The 18K yellow gold pendant is priced at $1,495 and the earrings at $995. The designs are also available in sterling silver for $495 and $295, respectively. Sales proceeds go to the Lustgarten Foundation, which was founded in 1998 following the diagnosis of Cablevision Systems executive Marc Lustgarten, who died from the disease the following year. Pancreatic cancer is also close to the hearts of London Jewelers, as we lost our general manager Michael Spevak to the disease in 2008.

There are currently no early detection tests available for pancreatic cancer and its survival rate is just 5 percent. It also receives far less funding and media attention than other cancers. The Lustgarten Foundation works to advance scientific and clinical research related to the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure of pancreatic cancer. Thanks to a multi-year commitment by Cablevision Systems Corporation to underwrite all administrative expenses, 100 percent of all donations will go directly to pancreatic cancer research. “It was an honor to be chosen for this year’s collaboration with London Jewelers in its efforts to support the Lustgarten Foundation,” said Ippolita. “To me, it’s a special moment when a beautiful piece of jewelry not only leaves the wearer feeling fantastic, but makes a contribution to someone else’s well-being.” In addition to making a donation from sales proceeds, London Jewelers participated in the Lustgarten Foundation’s 12th annual Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk on October 13th. GIVING BACK

RESCUE PAW

T

he next time you pass a shop with puppies in the window, admire their cuteness but please don’t be tempted to take one home. Doing so merely supports the market for puppy mills, says Leslie Granger, vice president of development at Bideawee, the leading pet welfare organization serving metropolitan New York and Long Island. These so-called puppy mills often keep dogs in poor conditions and overbreed them, leading to health defects in their litters. It may come as a surprise to learn that not only is going to an animal shelter a more humane way to acquire a pet, but the dog is far more likely to be in excellent health, already spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Shelter workers are also highly experienced in matching a dog to the lifestyle of its masters, Granger says. For example, an exercise-dependent dog in a sedentary home is not a good match. Animal rescue is close to the heart of London Jewelers’ president Candy Udell, who founded the Rescue Paw Foundation to do her part to save the roughly 10 million animals euthanized in shelters each year. A portion of each sale from the Rescue Paw jewelry collection goes directly to help rescue, transport, vaccinate and spay/neuter countless homeless animals in need of forever homes. Together with several Long Island-based partner organizations, she’s working to save animals from high-kill shelters, especially in the southern U.S., where the amount of unwanted pets is at an emergency level. “We work with the Rescue Paw Foundation to help adoptable dogs at risk in the deep South, currently in Alabama,” says Sara Davison, executive director of the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons. “When you do this kind of work, it’s important to have good partnerships with those down on the ground. We bring the dogs up here, rehabilitate them, do the

necessary veterinary work, and get them adopted.” Dogs end up in shelters for a variety of reasons, explains Maryann Chernovsky of the 86-year-old Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center in Huntington. The poor economy over the past five years has left many animals homeless; more recently, Hurricane Sandy did the same. Little Shelter advocates for animals through both education in the community and innovative programs such as Animal Soup Kitchen (ASK), which provides food as well as veterinary services to low-income families struggling to feed their pets. “We also do a program where we help children who have reading problems, such as being embarrassed to read aloud,” says Chernovsky. “We go in with a team of dogs for the kids to read with, and it’s very effective and has helped so many kids get over their fear.” At any given time, Little Shelter has 400 cats and 50 dogs. As far as bringing that number down, “It’s pretty much one out, one in.” The number of cats in the shelter is so much higher because cats that go outside are unsupervised, and if they haven’t been spayed or neutered they will reproduce. If the problem of unwanted animals seems unstoppable, Davison points to the example here at home. “We’re able to take dogs from the deep South because we have been successful in stopping the major dog overpopulation issues in the Northeast through years of education, outreach and spaying and neutering. We just don’t have unwanted litters of puppies coming into our shelter anymore, whereas 15 years ago we did.” The Rescue Paw Foundation works tirelessly with these wonderful organizations and more. Together we have saved countless precious lives, and we continue to educate and raise awareness about the millions of homeless animals in the U.S. To get involved, visit facebook.com/OurCauseForPaws.
