CEO Nancy Mann on uniquely you proposals. Some of the most intimate moments I have experienced at Mann’s Jewelers have been spent with clients shopping for engagement rings. I’ve heard the most amazing stories of love and connection, as well as a genuine desire to propose in the most memorable way possible. Recently, how and where to propose has become almost as important as the wedding itself. Many proposals have become choreographed events, with every detail planned, including a hidden photographer or videographer to capture the moment. Another proposal trend includes a private moment between the couple, where the question is asked and the ring presented, at which time the newly engaged twosome goes for dinner to celebrate. Instead, they walk into a room filled with their families and friends, all assembled en masse to share their good wishes on the happy occasion. I know of families who have gathered from far-flung locations to be on hand for the surprise celebration, and have kept the big secret from the recipient of the ring for weeks or months prior to the actual engagement.

girlfriend’s favorite place on the planet. He had already worked out every detail in his head, including the exact location where he planned on asking her to spend the rest of her life with him. Once he chose a ring he thought she would love, I suggested we personalize it with a tiny green diamond to represent Ireland, carefully set inside the ring shank, as a forever secret message to her. I still get misty eyed when I replay their story in my head. The more we know about your life together, the easier it becomes for us to personalize a ring to make it uniquely yours. We are passionate about helping you create a special ring that perfectly symbolizes your love. After all, your engagement will become one of the most memorable moments you will share in your lifetime together, as you begin the journey from “Me” to “We.”

One of the questions that invariably comes up during the process of selecting a ring is, “Have you given any thought as to how you are going to propose?” Often, a timeframe and location have already been determined, and the last detail is choosing the perfect ring. Recently, I worked with a wonderful guy who knew he wanted to propose in Ireland, his

ello fall! Want some advice? Be Extra. Embellishments? Just keep them coming. Seriously, if the House of Gucci doesn’t know when enough is enough, then I’m not going to be the one to hold back. Overthe-top is the theme of the times. Along with social change comes the people’s expression through a multitude of vices. My vice is fashion: sometimes too loud, but I’m always up for anything. Forget the rules—they no longer apply. When I actually have a minute to myself, I daydream up outfits. Not because I’m actually worried about what I am going to wear, and not because I think it’s super important. I know the reality; I’m not solving world peace. It’s just that I enjoy it. It gives me energy; it’s my personal form of mental exercise. With all the emphasis on “more,” that just means there’s more bat$#*! crazy stuff I can get away with. I am past caring what people may think, and I’m okay with making mistakes (an occasional bad choice is inevitable). For example, last week I wore a beautiful English countryside-inspired pink floral dress. As I was leaving the house my husband said, “Whoa, Mrs. Roper?!” I was still laughing when I walked into the restaurant for a philanthropic meeting at Branca Midtown. I could not have been more out of place, and I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. I do love the dress (thanks, Mom) and hey, I will stand by the ensemble. People wouldn't expect anything less from me. Over-the-top is my jam. It's my calling card, so even when it’s not a win, it’s not exactly a fail. I would rather laugh at it than go in safe. Safety just bores me. So this winter let’s have some fun at the risk of maybe looking ridiculous. And if you see me dressed up as Mrs. Roper, it’s not Halloween: it’s just a random Tuesday in my funny little world.

MY TOP PICKS FOR FALL AND WINTER: Red everything. But especially red knee-high boots. Pointy toe and totally badass. This is just the shoe to take over for the boring black that’s in your closet. These are so sexy Above: Courtney Winslow, Mae Winslow and Jennifer Sands. Lifestyle images by Alexandra Elise Photography.

when worn with an oversized MJ Precious sweater dress and messy bedroom Petites evil eye curls from Sooz. If the boots are too necklace with sapphires and much of a commitment and you’re diamonds in not the settling down type, go for a 14k yellow matchy-matchy red pantsuit. This gold. $475 color commanded the runway for fall. Across the board, it's a win. heckers, plaids and Grandma’s florals: it’s like we broke into your grandparents’ house and converted their furniture into a runway show. Even Burberry covered its furs in plastic, just like Nana’s couch. Try long wide-leg pants in exaggerated ’70s plaids, with a blazer to match and a mod white leather boot. Texas Tuxedo? It’s denim on top of denim. This fall it has ruffles, it has raw hems or patchwork, it’s sometimes dark and fancy. Jeans are so much more fun this season, so worth the extra pair from Dado. I was feeling my fashion-blogger best in my sideruffle Citizens of Humanity jeans and a chambray button-down held together by a red leather belt bag when my son Cash looked up at me and said, “I just don't get it. I guess I don't get fashion.” Not to worry my little buddy: Mama will be happy to show you the way. Leisure suits are making a comeback. I’ll never forget how I loved my Juicy track suits back in the ’90s…and how it almost ruined my relationship. After retuning from Bloomingdale’s with yet another velour ensemble, my boyfriend turned to me and said, “Just stop. I want to burn them all.” It didn't even dawn on me then what I had Hueb Lava earrings with done. What if he had come to my house ruby, amethyst every Saturday dressed in sweatpants and rhodolite in and a sweatshirt? As we were heading 18k yellow gold. $12,170 out to date night… “Hold up honey, just got to dress down and get cozy, be right there!” Well, as it turns out, it’s about to be back in fashion Bae. Please, for everyone’s sake, let’s try to style it a little more Adidas and a little less Paris Hilton. Holiday this year is covered in tinsel. Silver-sequined dresses in every silhouette should be under the tree. Heavy metals are shiny and modern. Perfect for your family Hanukkah party or a girls’ night out. Don’t worry about being the overdressed one. I never do. As I was walking into Wegman’s in a flowing gown (it even had a train) a friend

C

stopped her car and said “I was just looking at this person coming towards me and thinking, what the hell? Oh wait, of course, it’s just you.” I have to say I got a lot of compliments on that Monday afternoon. My favorite was from a little girl wearing her Cinderella dress: she stopped me to say that she thought my dress was pretty. We cheered to being fabulous princesses, both of us enjoying some chocolate in our gowns at the grocery store. So wear that shiny bomber jacket to the gym over your workout gear. (And OMG, thank you Stency Wegman for the most fabulous new black yoga pants.) Please wear some metallic booties with your boring work pants. Then end the

day wearing a sexy drippy sequin camisole out on date night. Shine on girl. This is the season to bust out any style you want and be brave. Things have totally gone bananas in the fashion world and anything goes. You can literally wear shearling shoes that look like your mom’s shih tzu that she dyed lavender, with a patchwork mini dress and a newsboy leather cap. Or you can go Annie Hall and be confident and sexy in a long trench with wide-leg pants, white tee, beret and embellished platform loafers. That's the state of the world. Complete and utter freedom of expression. You can be as wacky as you want. No one can say a damn thing about, and if they ask why? Tell them because Dolce and Gabana said so. Now let’s hear from someone else who likes to tell me what to do. My mama (known by the grandkids as Mimi) is about to give you the 411 on the best themed gifts for the holiday!

HOLIDAY GIFT-GIVING IDEAS FROM MIMI (AKA JENNIFER SANDS): Find a theme for Christmas or Hanukkah; oh how I adore themes! A matching set of luggage full of special gifts, ready for a winter getaway for the whole gang. Put engraved name tags on them, and tuck them under the tree to be unpacked on Christmas morning. Heading south for the winter? One year I gave everyone a beach bag full of goodies. Outdoor theme? Yes! Snow shoes, ski gear, or a pass to our famous Bristol Mountain. Staycation? One of my many passions in life is being cozy and making sure everyone in my family is too. My grandchildren ask me, “How do you know so much about cozy?!” I have so much practice they’ve even nicknamed me Jammies. The Sands’ snuggly essentials are silky robes, UGG throws, slippers you can even walk the dog in, and a little black box from Mann’s all in one comfy package. Last year I went kicks crazy! I bought everyone the most sparkly, embroidered, highest-platform sneakers I could find. Needless to say, they were a big hit! The only problem is remembering everyone's shoe size; boy was that a nightmare. It’s no secret that I love

my littles to the moon and back; each night of Hanukkah I shower them with moon necklaces, star stud earrings, constellation cuff links, or an astrologically themed watch. You can even name a star after your favorite nine year old. The sky is the limit with this theme! While I love giving, I really don't like wrapping presents. There is no need to have them displayed perfectly under the tree; it’s much more fun to create a story in a dreamy corner of the room for each person. Arrange gifts on the couch, the floor, even the dining table, so that everyone has their own spot filled with ribbon-topped surprises. The wonderment of the season is walking into the room to find where your holiday will take you! Love, Mimi

GRENADINE This powerful ruby red elicits a sense of confidence and packs a punch alongside autumn neutrals. Worn as a bold lip or structured dress, Grenadine is a classic true red that looks amazing on everyone.

TAWNY PORT Autumn is a season of change, often tossing pastels and summer neons for dark, sophisticated colors. Tawny Port is no different; it’s a deep go-to burgundy that doubles as a neutral while remaining a daring color. BALLET SLIPPER A slightly dusty rose that matches a pair of flushed cheeks, Ballet Slipper is the embodiment of the oh-so-trendy ‘millennial pink.’ Worn with darker shades, like Tawny Port, it brightens up an otherwise somber look.

PANTONE COLOR REPORT FALL 2017

BUTTERUM Warm and buttery, like its namesake drink, Butterum is a toasty shade that conjures up images of a cozy atmosphere, a crackling fire and a crisp fall breeze. Often found in classic pieces, like woolen coats or cashmere sweaters, this almond hue is a chic and comfy choice.

NAVY PEONY This anchor shade is one of the darker colors in the palette, taking the crown from black as the new neutral. An intense blue, Navy Peony pairs with some of the more natural hues, like Butterum and Neutral Gray.

B Y T E S S S TA I R I K E R

NEUTRAL GRAY The shade with the most self-explanatory name, Neutral Gray is the tried-and-true color that can be used as an accent or all over. Taking inspiration from overcast fall mornings, this hue is perfect with any pattern and material. SHADED SPRUCE A punchy jade hue, this shade is often found in the forest, adorning the ever-blooming evergreens. This true autumnal color evokes the feeling of protection and easily completes fall and winter wardrobes.

GOLDEN LIME Another green in the palette, Golden Lime is more of an accent color. This vivid chartreuse is the perfect shade to jazz up a true neutral and add some gold tones to a look.

MARINA This cool-toned blue is a great transition for any leftover summer pieces you want to bring into the new season! Marina adds a fresh feel to some of the darker and gloomy shades that so often fill a fall palette.

AUTUMN MAPLE Jack-o’-lanterns, scarecrows and pumpkin spice lattes: these are a few of autumn’s favorite things! This tawny orange is the quintessential shade that comes to mind when thinking of fall and immediately creates a warm look.

Ask the Doctor

An interview with plastic surgeon DR. ASHLEY AMALFI.

B

reast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery performed in the United States, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, with over 290,000 performed in 2016. Although mainstream enough to be discussed over coffee with friends, there are many things you still may not know about the procedure: nuances and decisions to be made with your plastic surgeon that can greatly impact the outcome. Here, we ask Dr. Ashley Amalfi, a URMC plastic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery, some of the most common questions regarding breast augmentation. It’s clear that the impetus behind her practice (and where she feels she shines brightest as a female plastic surgeon) is in matching the right implant to each of her patients to create a beautiful, natural aesthetic.

shell; it’s the stuff inside that’s different. They can be filled with saline (which is just salt water) or a silicone gel. A newer style of implant is called the “gummy bear” implant. (But they aren’t the kids’ treats that are all over the backseat of my SUV!) “Gummy bear” refers to the thickness of newer silicone gel implants. These implants are more cohesive and have a consistency similar to a gummy bear, allowing them to better hold their form. Now on to shape. Implants are traditionally round, so that no matter how they spin once inside the body, their shape appears exactly the same. The other option is the “teardrop” implant. This implant is shaped with more projection on the bottom and can help you achieve a more natural aesthetic; it’s really beautiful on the right patient.

Can I get a breast augmentation if I plan to have (more) children? Will I be able to breastfeed my baby?

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for breast augmentation? Always wanted to be smaller? Ready to upgrade your B cup? Feel like your newborn literally sucked the life out of your breasts? You’re not alone. I see many women who are interested in breast surgery for a variety of reasons. If it’s something you’ve been wondering about, come in for a consultation with a board certified or board eligible plastic surgeon. There may be opportunities that you have never considered. It’s never too early to plan, and it’s always the right time to get your questions answered.

Absolutely! As a physician and a mom of two, I always encourage women to pursue breastfeeding if it’s the right decision for both mom and baby. It is very safe to breastfeed your child after having a breast augmentation. It’s always a possibility, just like for all breastfeeding mamas, that you may not make enough milk for your baby and will need to supplement. But if you’re worried about silicone, don't be. Studies have shown that many store-bought infant formulas actually contain more silicone than breastmilk expressed from women with silicone breast implants!

How do I even begin to envision what this will look like? I want to look as natural as possible. Don’t be overwhelmed. There are a lot of decisions to make when having a breast augmentation, but your surgeon is here to help. Relax and have fun trying on different implants at your consultation! When we meet to plan your surgery, we’ll need to pick not only the size you would like to be, but also the type of implant and the location. Let’s break it down. Implants all have an outer silicone

20

I heard that breast implants need to be replaced every 10 years. Fact or fiction? Fiction! There is no expiration date on your breast implants and no recommended time frame for implant exchange or removal. However, if your implant is ruptured or there is an impending rupture, then it’s time to replace it. How will you know? Follow up with a plastic surgeon once a year to have them checked out.

& NOTEWORTHY

ROBERTO COIN Since 1996, Roberto Coin has been known as a creator of sophistication, blending modernity and tradition. Driven by an innate love for the world of art and fashion, Coin decided to leave his successful career as a hotel manager to follow his dream, facing a new and passionate adventure. His creativity took shape through the hands of the most renowned Italian jewelry artisans, who brought Roberto Coin’s romantic and borderless imagination to life through their skills, telling his story through jewels that truly become works of art. Proof positive of this is the Venetian Princess collection, inspired by the patterns and decorations of storied Venetian architecture. It brings to mind fables and majesty, handed down through the narrow Venetian alleys under the warm light of lanterns, where elegance meets intrigue. New this year are sophisticated satin finishes and exquisite pavÊ lockets, allowing you to carry a piece of the mystery close to your own heart.

IPPOLITA When Italian artist and designer Ippolita Rostagno founded Ippolita in 1999, fine jewelry was primarily traditional in design and worn only on special occasions. Since then, she has championed the concept of cool fine jewelry intended to be worn every day. This season, Ippolita has redefined iconic relationships by introducing the Cherish collection. Its links in 18K yellow gold, sterling silver and diamonds interlock, cradle and surround each other in tender, playful interaction. Deriving from the signature link of the Cherish chain, the focal point is an extension of the literal definition of the word love: to have and to hold, to embrace and to value. Bold layering chains as well as everyday delicate pendants, with each individual link sculpted by the hands of master artisans, stress the unconditional bond between lovers or friends.

Shoe icon Manolo Blahnik is one of New York City’s most revered citizens, in part due to his iconic association with HBO’s Sex and the City. But for a double dose of the artisan’s genius this fall, you’ll have to head to another city: Prague, Czechoslovakia. Together with Preciosa, the leading manufacturer and global supplier of Bohemian crystal, Blahnik has created a one-of-a-kind shoe, embellished with fuchsia pompoms and more than 100 crystal chandelier trimmings, that is on display at the Preciosa flagship store in Old Town Prague. Meanwhile, a comprehensive tribute to his life’s work, The Art of Shoes, is making a stop at Museum Kampa through November. Guest-curated by Cristina Carrillo de Albornoz and made up of six thematic sections (Nature, Gala, Art and Architecture, Heart, Geography, and Materials), the retrospective gives visitors a kaleidoscopic view of Blahnik’s creative path as shown by an impressive collection of 80 drawings and 200 shoes that represent nearly 50 years of his work as a stylist and designer. UNIQUE LUXURY: UNIWORLD BOUTIQUE RIVER CRUISE COLLECTION

A

vid cruise travelers know the truth of the old adage: It’s about the journey, not the destination. And unlike ocean cruises, which may spend much of the trip on open seas, river voyages cruise right through the heart of cities around the globe to offer an up-close experience. Here, we compare three of the top luxury river cruise companies. BY JULIANNE PEPITONE Boutique dining on Uniworld’s Bordeaux, Vineyards & Chateaux itinerary.

We never tire of going above and beyond to create extraordinary experiences both onboard and onshore.” THE SCOOP: Fans of cookie-cutter cruise décor need not apply. Uniworld ships look like none other: public areas decked out with tufted leopard-print settees and abstract art, a lounge outfitted in gleaming teal, and suite walls painted in rich red. The boutique philosophy goes beyond the décor: Uniworld offers a slate of themed cruises including journeys that explore European aristocracy, Jewish history and culture, French food and wine, European Christmas markets, and “Generations” family cruises. Travelers on most of the European voyages are provided with butlers who are trained to “go above and beyond to create special moments that our guests remember long after they leave.” THE DESTINATIONS: Europe, Russia, China, Vietnam and Cambodia, Egypt and India.

SPARKLING NEW: CRYSTAL RIVER CRUISES CURRENT STARTING COST:

THE TAGLINE: “[A] heady combination of indulgent services and enriching discovery… innovative excellence, exquisitely designed ships, bold itineraries, customized destination immersion and the highest standards of personalized service at sea and on land.” THE SCOOP: The five ships that make up Crystal’s river fleet are shiny and new: one (Mozart) was fully refurbished in 2016, and the other four (Bach, Debussy, Mahler, Ravel) are new builds delivered in summer 2017. Each ship features a spa and library, and the new vessels offer suites as large as 750 square feet, including walk-in closets and king beds. The bulb of the Vino Vial holds a special blend of amethyst and clear quartz. It’s brought to us by the team at Gem-Water, who turned us on to the interaction between gemstones and water. THE BETTY CHICAGO

A local favorite in Chicago’s Fulton Market District, The Betty is described as an upscale neighborhood tavern with a sophisticated vibe, warm atmosphere and innovative approach to classic drinks. Mixologist Julianna Arquilla has worked there since its opening, starting out serving and moving up the ranks to running the entire bar. Known for her calm and finesse with large crowds, she creates thoughtful, fulltasting drinks using interesting ingredients. She chose a local big rye for this cold weather cocktail. THE BITTERSWEET 2 oz. Journeyman Last Feather Rye .50 oz. CH Dogma Fernet .25 oz. spiced syrup 2 dashes orange bitters 1 egg Coffee dust and orange for garnish “In the winter I want to warm up with a nice spicy rye. Chicago winters can be long, bitter and cold, but they make the wait for the summer worth it. (The quote ‘Without the bitter, the sweet isn’t as sweet’ is definitely true about Chicago!) The Bittersweet is a perfect nightcap for a cold winter night. The bitterness from the fernet melds well with the spiciness from the rye, and the spiced syrup adds just enough sweetness. The egg rounds it out with a lovely elegance.”

MANSION BAR DALLAS

Tucked away on beautiful grounds in Dallas sits the stately, luxurious Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek.

Recognized internationally for its exemplary service and extraordinary amenities, the historic hotel includes a restaurant and bar that have garnered awards on their own. Danny Caffall has spent the past six years creating sophisticated, flavor-layered cocktails and welcoming locals and travelers from around the world. “I love being part of something so special,” he explains. “Mansion Bar is an incredible place within a legendary property. Welcoming our guests is a great honor.” PUMPKIN OLD FASHIONED 2 oz. rye whiskey ½ oz. cinnamon falernum Muddled orange peel Dash Angostura bitters Eyedropper of pumpkin tincture Caffall is known for using interesting ingredients to craft traditional cocktails with an unexpected twist. “The Old Fashioned is a timeless classic cocktail. We’ve added a hint of the fall season to it. The beauty of the Pumpkin Old Fashioned is its subtlety: a breath of the pumpkin and fall spice on the exhale.”

SEAMSTRESS NEW YORK CITY

Patrons treasure the extensive menu, the fresh seasonal flavors, the knowledgeable staff and the steamy décor of New York City’s Seamstress, recipient of national accolades. Head bartender Luis Hernandez leads the tight-knit team with well-honed skills. His inspiration for creating cocktails is the pursuit of flavor—and the look on people’s faces when they discover something special! “Aromatics is a drink where you can smell the warmth before you feel it. As the name suggests, the aromatics represent layering in flavors, all dark and warming. When I create a cocktail like this one, I’m representing myself, Seamstress, my bar team and all the bars in New York. This drink is the summary of all that inspires me in this wonderful, creative city.”

Top 3 Local Ways

To Get Your Healthy Meal Fix Being a food and drink blogger, I try to strike the right balance between eating healthy and dining out. My biggest roadblock to cooking at home comes down to time. Trying to find enough time in the day to plan out meals, shop for all the ingredients, and prepare them in advance is HARD work. Plus, who wants to eat the same quinoa salad three days in row? Not I. If only there was a place that offered meal prep services and a wide range of delicious and nutritious food... Wait a second, there are actually THREE local places in Rochester that can provide this! While they differ in food philosophies and offerings, one thing is common to all: they will make eating healthy a heck of a lot easier for us. Make sure to take advantage of these local ways to get your healthy meal fix. BY SIR ROCHA SAYS BLOGGER LINH PHILLIPS, SIRROCHASAYS.COM

RELISH DELIVERS

Stephen Reed, owner of Relish Delivers, remembers pretending to play restaurant as a little boy, making fake menus and taking orders. His imaginary world came true with the opening of Relish Delivers—a lunch, dinner and prepared foods restaurant—in the South Wedge neighborhood. Reed and his team pride themselves on utilizing the freshest ingredients from our local farms that are seasonally focused. The core idea behind the meal program is to be simply delicious with meals made from scratch using simple, whole ingredients. The program is divided into two sections: one is centered on comfort food that can be stored in your freezer; the second is the fresh selection, which changes on a weekly basis. Each meal kit can serve two to three people, and you’ll always find your choice of fish, meat or vegan dishes. One tasty example is the garlic-rubbed pork tenderloin over roasted gremolata fingerling potatoes and greens. Now we’re talking! Visit the restaurant to delight your taste buds and check out daily offerings via web or by phone.

MEALS BY DELEO

Before Meals By DeLeo came to fruition, owner Jason DeLeo dealt with many health issues. He was a Type 2 diabetic, overweight with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Needing to make a change and knowing that the weight loss fads of the world were not for him, he created a meal plan that followed a macro-based diet. Through this plan, he was able to lose 80 lbs. and swear off his medication. Inspired by his transformation, his family and friends asked for his help to achieve their own goals through nutrition. And thus, Meals By DeLeo was born. To up the ante even more, DeLeo is a Culinary Institute of America graduate and has been running a successful catering business for the last 15 years. With his culinary prowess and quest for good nutrition, he is able to consistently provide tasty fresh (never frozen) meals delivered to your home. Inspired by a book that promoted a plant-based, vegan lifestyle, she began to cut out meat, dairy and processed foods. Her energy levels improved dramatically, and coupled with an active lifestyle, she has since lost 142 lbs. and found her true calling. YOU GO GIRL! CAN CUISINE

A

Delicacies in tin are haute and happening!

s you sip good wine and listen to live music in a lush garden with twinkling lights overhead, you might think you’re at a rustic café in the French countryside, especially since the menu features traditional French items like steak au poivre, coq au Riesling, and steamed mussels. But check out the bottom of the menu and you’ll find the “Can to Table” offerings: spiced calamari in ragout sauce from Portugal, mussels in escabeche from Spain, and scallop rillettes from France. The States are even represented with habanero-smoked oysters from the Willapa Bay in Washington.

Preserved at their freshest point with utmost care by a handful of suppliers using the highest-grade olive oils and sauces, these delicacies are eaten at the finest restaurants in Portugal and Spain. The rare seafood is caught in the cool waters along the European coast, and would clearly be difficult to enjoy stateside were it not preserved. Fortunately, restaurants are catching on. Foodies in New Orleans frequent N7, the aforementioned eatery tucked away in a secret garden in the Marigny. The restaurant has no website, no phone, not even a sign other than a hand-painted N7 on the wooden fence surrounding the property. Still, the place is always packed and full of life. Patrons enjoy the extensive wine list, the exquisitely flavored, freshcooked fare and the upscale canned food. Artistically decorated cans are served on long, wooden boards with sliced baguettes, various sauces and small tasting forks. Several other restaurants around the country are also serving conservas (Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor, MI; Donostia, Huertas and Maiden Lane in NYC; Bar Vivant in Portland, OR; and Aatxe in San Francisco), so expand your palate and enjoy a taste of the exotic, a high-end dining experience straight from a can—best enjoyed with a fabulous glass of wine (from a bottle)! GIVING ARTFUL

Newport Beach, California. “More often than not, collections are built around the generosity of the community members and patrons in the form of gifts of artwork. For institutions with limited acquisition funds, this is particularly meaningful. “Oftentimes relationships with such patrons develop over time,” she continues, “as shared interests about art and artists and even the role of the museum in a given context evolve. Collectors usually care deeply about the legacy of their gifting, and therefore this mutual respect and understanding creates a partnership that is ultimately rewarding for them as well as the museum and its public.” Private collectors have helped round out the OCMA’s collection by adding new artistic styles and voices. “In recent years, OCMA has been fortunate to receive many artworks from Los Angeles collectors Tracy and Gary Mezzatesta,” Coblentz says, “who made the generous decision to donate significant works to museums throughout the US for public benefit. OCMA happily accepted works by groundbreaking Los Angeles artists who previously were not represented in our collection. “Donated works by women and artists of diverse cultural backgrounds are welcomed additions that round out the collection,” Coblentz continues. “The museum has been able to include some of the Mezzatestas’ donations in recent exhibitions—an indicator of the impact of this gift and its potential to present a more accurate representation of the art of our time.” BY CHRISTIAN CHENSVOLD

Generous endowments strengthen museum collections.

Last spring, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s already-staggering collection of artistic achievement spanning the globe and the centuries became even better: Oscar L. Tang donated Riverbank, a 10thcentury Chinese landscape painting considered one of the earliest and most important masterpieces of its kind. Tang is a descendant of the dynasty that bears his name, and his gift significantly enhances the museum’s already impressive array of Asian art. Meanwhile in Kansas City, Missouri, Henry Bloch (the 94year-old founder of H&R Block) donated 29 important Impressionist works by Van Gogh, Monet and Cezanne to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The Marion and Henry Bloch Foundation also donated $12 million to renovate museum galleries where the paintings are displayed. And the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida has organized a campaign to encourage giving by creating the 21st Century Society. Looking to appeal to a new generation of private donors, it is led by Gil Maurer and Irene Karp, both museum trustees who have promised important canvases to the museum. Endowed gifts have become increasingly important to museums to support their missions of preservation, education and scholarship, and to ensure they are capable of harnessing the latest technologies for those very purposes. “Museum collections are often a reflection of the communities that support them,” says Cassandra Coblentz, senior curator at the Orange County Museum of Art in

INSHARP FOCUS Atom Moore is a New York City photographer who makes portraits not of people, but of watches. BY JULIANNE PEPITONE

There’s nothing else quite like Atom Moore’s “watch portraits,” which splice details from different watches into a single unreal image for an effect that’s dreamlike yet sharply focused. Here, he tells us more about his unique art.

to see. I print the portraits on giant sheets of metal, which is uncommon and reminds you of the watch’s original form. They’re interesting on paper, but on metal they really come to life.

Why are you drawn to watches? What makes a successful watch portrait? They’re essentially mashups. You can get incredibly granular with macro shots, down to the finest detail. Then I take details from one watch and details from another and manipulate them to make something different. I don’t go into the process expecting to create a certain thing in a certain time period. Sometimes I just like two images. And I work on [the portrait] until it feels done.

Why are people drawn to this art? It isn’t just for watch nerds; it’s visually interesting art. Seeing the details of something so close up changes your perspective on that thing. And the combination adds this unreal element that’s interesting. People will ask, “Is this real? Is this an actual watch?” People see in the images what they want

56

Photographing jewelry and watches is hard to do. Most jewelry is extremely reflective from all angles, so if you don't take that into account your photo won’t show the quality. My wife and I are both collectors. We were introduced to the RedBar Crew, who meet up [at a New York bar] to talk about and share watches. I got access to really cool watches without having to go into a store, which is huge. And I like seeing how watches change over time. I’ve gone through photos of vintage watches and you can see, oh, in 1974 they changed how the dial looks. Watches age, just as everything does, and they change in very different ways.

What’s your favorite watch? The one that’s currently in front of my lens.

TIME RISING ABOVE

Philippe Lebru and the art of contemporary clockmaking.

W

hen we recently discovered this sculptural collection of wall and tall clocks at the 2017 Watch Fair in Basel, Switzerland, we felt we had stumbled upon something extraordinary. Then when we met its creator, Philippe Lebru, we knew we were face to face with genius! Since 1993, Lebru has been experimenting with oversized, graphic (some say subversive) timepieces, and with the relationship between individuals and time. “I imagined a clock that could rise above time, a clock that would connect the past to the future, tracing a line that defines our relationship to a greater force,” he explains. This greater force, no doubt, is what catapulted the artist to considerable fame. In 2005, his collection was awarded the Grand Prix at France’s Concours Lepine for inventions. He then won a gold medal for horology at the International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva. In 2011, Lebru produced two monumental clocks for the city of Besancon (birthplace of Victor Hugo, Gustave Courbet and Louis Pasteur): one for its high-speed train station and one for its art museum. In 2015, he was commissioned to produce a five-meter-high skeleton clock, the largest in the world, which currently marks the moments in downtown Tokyo. And speaking of commissions, you too can own one of Lebru’s horological masterpieces. Check out his collection online (utinam-manufacture.fr) or send him a photo of your room and he will custom design the perfect piece for your wall. More than mere clocks, these timepieces are unique combinations of art, science, culture and technical prowess. As it is said: “If we take care of the moments, the years will take care of themselves.” BY KAREN ALBERG GROSSMAN

CLOCKWORK ORANGE: Lebru’s creations are technical and artistic feats of imagination.

RAREFIED REALM of

NATURAL COLOR DIAMONDS

For centuries, natural color diamonds have been regarded as the world’s most sought-after gems, by knowledgable collectors and even royalty. Natural color diamonds have long been treasured for their rarity: coveted by many, but owned by few. These diamonds are truly wonders of the world, as old as the Earth itself, yet never have they been more sought after than they are today; their scarcity is at the heart of their desirability. 60

Only one in 10,000 diamonds mined displays enough natural color to be designated a fancy color diamond by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Theirs is a discreet luxury: In the rarefied realm of fancy color diamonds, strength of color is more important than the size of the stone. Natural color diamonds can be 10 to 20 times more valuable than their colorless counterparts, and their popularity as an alternative is growing. However, no one acquires a fancy color diamond for its investment value alone. Their allure lies in their mesmerizing beauty, rarity, mystery and unique provenance. Rare natural color diamonds have increased in value exponentially in the last 10 years, often by double digits year over year. According to leading trade organizations, auction houses and expert diamantaires, rare fancy pink and fancy blue diamonds have led the way, growing by well over 300 percent on average and outperforming most other asset classes in the same period.

COLOR In diamonds, rarity equals value. With diamonds in the normal range, value is based on the absence of color, because colorless diamonds are the rarest. With fancy color diamonds — the ones outside the normal color range — the rarest and most valuable colors are saturated reds, pinks, blues and greens. In all cases, even very slight color differences can have a big impact on value. Compared to fancy yellows and browns, diamonds with a noticeable hint of any other hue are considerably more rare. Even in light tones and weak saturation, as long as they show color in the face-up position, they qualify as fancy colors. Red, green and blue diamonds with medium to dark tones and moderate saturations are extremely rare.

As global financial markets continue to demonstrate volatility and instability, affluent collectors and investors around the world are acquiring natural color diamonds to protect their wealth, and to transfer it from one generation to the next. Meanwhile, as demand rises, the earth’s supply of fancy color diamonds is dwindling: The Cullinan Mine in South Africa is today the only important source of blue diamonds; Australia’s Ellendale Mine, a main source of yellows, has recently ceased production; and Rio Tinto’s Argyle Mine in Western Australia, the source of most pink diamonds, is scheduled to close by 2020. CLARITY With fancy color diamonds, color is the dominant value factor. Even diamonds with numerous inclusions that result in a low clarity grade are prized by connoisseurs if they display attractive face-up color. Of course, inclusions that threaten the gem’s durability can lower a fancy color diamond’s value significantly. Fancy color diamonds can exhibit color graining, which is considered an inclusion. CUT Size and shape are two aspects of cut that can influence diamond color. The larger a diamond is, or the deeper its pavilion, the farther light can travel in it. This can often lead to a richer, more intense color. C A R AT W E I G H T As with diamonds in the normal D-to-Z color range, large fancy color diamonds are rarer and more valuable than small ones.

sometimes don’t hear from other jewelers. As with any type of business, there are “loopholes,” and we’re happy to share our knowledge with you.

Let’s talk about diamonds for a second. That’s where the process starts, right? We have a lot of loose diamonds in our inventory, but if we don’t have exactly what a client is looking for, we can source the perfect stone through our very strong, legacy relationships with diamond cutters. Our ability to purchase diamonds without having to incur the cost of a middleman is always a benefit when it comes to pricing. Our end goal is to give a comfortable, fullservice experience, without a premium price. This should be fun, not intimidating!

What is it like to sit across from a couple who is about to get engaged? There’s a magic that happens when we sit down and really talk with people. This is about much more than just identifying which diamond shape you prefer. It’s about getting to know you and what makes your relationship so special. It’s about identifying your style and the type of ring that will fit best into your life. More than anything, it’s about building a trustbased relationship. We try to be incredibly transparent, and we pride ourselves on sharing insider info that you

How many rings does an average couple look at before finding the right one? As many as it takes. Our salespeople are noncommissioned, so they are happy to take as much time as you need to find the right diamond and the right setting. Mann’s carries a lot of engagement rings and designer collections, so why was it important to you to offer the MJ Tried & True collection as well? We do carry some really beautiful rings and we always have. But this collection was about compiling all of the information we’ve learned from helping more than 18,000 couples get engaged. We’re offering a collection of 175 new styles, each with customizable features, which really means there are thousands of options available to you! We’ve looked at many, many rings over the years, and we wanted to give our clients great value, endless style combinations and exceptional quality. MJ Tried & True is the culmination of that.

What’s different about this collection? There are really two things that stand out: The first is that we approach each ring as if it were a blank canvas. If you want to change it to have a halo of tiny diamonds around your center stone, we can do that. If you want it made in rose gold instead of white, we can do that. We invite you to be inspired by a style, and then we’ll custombuild a ring, in your finger size, according to

Mann’s Jewelers has been selling engagement rings for a lot of years. What else have you learned? We’ve learned that our customers want assurance during and after their purchase, which is why we offer a price guarantee on every diamond we sell. This is part of a comprehensive warranty on every engagement ring purchased from Mann’s Jewelers. Also included in the warranty is a trade-up program on our diamonds: get a bigger diamond down the road, and we’ll take the original diamond back at its full value. And because this is a large purchase, sometimes our customers prefer to pay over time. We provide an option to apply for a Mann’s Jewelers credit card, with many payment options available. to be my own “designer” for a ring I’d wear every day, I find very intriguing. In the end, I’d likely end up with something with a fairly classic silhouette, but with something unexpected, or a unique characteristic. In this moment, I’m thinking of a solitaire style, with maybe some diamond accents, probably in rose gold. I’d likely add some vintage-inspired thin diamond bands to the mix, in a range of gold colors. The best part of all of this for me is having the ability to “test drive” everything before I commit. I can be fairly indecisive at times (I blame it on being a Gemini), so this entire collection is perfect for me.

You’re letting people take rings home? That seems unusual! We’ve all had the experience of making a big purchase and then regretting it. And there’s an expectation that this ring will be worn for life! That’s a lot of pressure. We invite you to spend time with our rings. Take them home. Try them on with different outfits. OVAL HALO

The round halo’s popularity has waned. What’s newly in demand: diamond accents elsewhere, such as on the shank, and the oval halo, an elegant look that elongates and slims the finger. Oval has risen to the top among fancy diamond shapes.

INTERTWINED BANDS

FLOWERS & BOWS

Flowers, vines and leaves seemingly gathered from the garden join bows in bringing the latest bridal gown trends to engagement rings. Floral halos or ribbon-like flourishes make for sophisticated styles that appeal to Boho and classic girls alike.

VINTAGE INSPIRATIONS

Whether twisted or overlapping, this wrapped design focuses attention on the center stone and adds interest to a simpler setting. What better way to signify tying the knot?

COLORED STONES

Vintage has been gaining favor for its glamour and timelessness. Nods to the Victorian and Art Deco periods include delicate engraving and personalized elements.

RING BLING

More than ever, couples want to convey their stories in uniquely personal ways. Today’s abundant engagement ring choices offer an extension of that storytelling.

While colored diamonds in pink, yellow, chocolate and black are all options, colored gemstones are even bigger breakouts. Sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and the dimensional color of alexandrite and opal are being used alone or with diamonds in three-stone settings and halos.

BY LAURIE SCHECHTER

PEAR & MARQUISE SHAPES

These tapered cuts provide a slenderizing effect on the hand and work well in an array of on-trend settings, from vintage to east/west.

STACKING BANDS

MIXED METAL

More evidence of the non-traditional movement and the desire to assert individuality, rose, yellow, white gold and platinum come together in stacking rings or in a single design.

DOUBLE SHANK

Dual bands offer an architectural and fashion-forward look. Plain or covered in diamonds, it’s a bold yet simple statement.

This is the ultimate example of customization and personalization. Rising in status for some time now, stacks are fast becoming the new standard, able to be mixed and matched, worn separately and added to over time.

DIAMOND & DESIGN DETAILING

DELICATE SETTINGS

EAST/ WEST SETTINGS

Perhaps one of the newest looks is the east/west setting, showcasing a horizontal stone orientation rather than vertical. Unique and versatile, accommodating all manner of stone cuts, this setting creates the illusion of a larger stone and stacks well with other rings.

Dainty and delicate, simple designs can be as impactful as over-the-top styles. The most popular engagement ring on Pinterest recently was a brilliant round solitaire diamond on a thin, simple band. Traditional and au courant, the design proves sometimes less is truly more.

68

Unique details kick it up a notch and enhance the center stone. Scrollwork in an ornate setting lends a one-of-a kind feel. Elaborate details on the sides of a band add dimensional views. Accent diamonds, in baguettes or unique shapes, ramp up the bling factor.

ROSE GOLD

Uber feminine and romantic, rose gold is probably the trendiest of metals and flatters all skin tones. With more women going for a feminine, fashionable look when walking down the aisle, it’s no surprise pink reigns supreme.

SAY “I DOUGH!” Custom doughnuts are the new wedding cake.

T

hese days, trendy, artisanal doughnut shops have popped up all around the country, and those circles of yeasty goodness—dreaded carbs 15 years ago—are back with renewed vigor. So it only makes sense that they’d make an appearance at weddings. Within the past year or two, an increasing number of doughnut walls, tiered cakes, trucks and madeto-order stations have popped up at receptions and as part of the “after-party” (another emerging wedding trend, as late-night comfort food replaces more formal offerings). “It’s becoming more popular,” affirms Heather Jones, the catering sales director for Wente Vineyards in Livermore, California. “We also do an action station with beignets, making them right in front of the guests and providing, say, a cabernet-chocolate dipping sauce. Or perhaps fresh churros with a bourbon-cream sauce. It’s all about PERSONALIZE taking things to the next level.” One big advantage is that it’s easy to personalize the doughnut experience (compared to, for example, a chocolate fountain). For Brooklyn’s Angela and Charla Harlow-Rothschild, “we tried to be very intentional about everything in our wedding to reflect who we are as a couple,” says Charla. Amidst the foodstuffs were two doughnut displays, from Dough and Dun-Well, both local shops. “Dough was the first of the new, trendy spots in Bed-Stuy,” says Charla, “and they hire people from the neighborhood, so we wanted to give them a shout-out.” Angela notes that “Dun-Well is cool, because they create delicious doughnuts that are vegan and gluten-free, perfect for friends who couldn’t share in the cake.” Supporting local business was also important for Kelsea Kirven Gallagher and her husband Patrick at their wedding in Richmond, Virginia. They brought in the Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen doughnut truck for their late-night snack. The Mennonite family-owned business has a huge following for its unusual misshapen glazed donuts. “[The business is] wonderfully grounded in family and faith,” says Kelsea, “serving as a great role models for our new marriage. And our guests are still talking about those warm doughnuts two years later!” Jones notes that the desire for a personal touch is common for couples who opt for doughnuts at Wente as well. Rather than order trendy variants like Hibiscus-Passion Fruit, “they will have one or two [classic] flavors that are ‘their’ doughnuts. Maybe they grew up with them, or enjoyed them as a couple.” BY ROBERT HAYNES-PETERSON

Ease

Even if you’re getting married indoors in the 21st century, there’s a way to evoke outdoor elements and add touches that recall the Renaissance or Victorian periods. Many couples are doing just that. The current word in wedding floral design is natural: flowers are given their own space rather than cramped into shiny vessels where they stand uniform, and plenty of greenery is added to mimic nature. “We’ve been seeing a trend for letting nature act on its own, with loose, asymmetrical designs that give the flowers a lot of room,” says Erin Hornstein, owner of Plum Sage Flowers in Denver, Colorado. The trend is being driven both by florists and their clients, with much of the inspiration coming from social media. Image-driven sites such as Pinterest and Instagram are where couples, wedding planners and florists all showcase their latest creations. “These sites give brides access to so many ideas,” says Hornstein. “They can type just a couple of words and get so many images.” Greenery has become very popular, including garland runners placed down the center of long tables, or leafy suspensions hanging over the altar or reception tables,

conveying the sense that they're growing. The use of greenery even extends to bridal bouquets and to bridesmaids. Instead of corsages, there’s a trend towards flower “bracelets” along with flower hair combs and even full crowns. Michelle Hannah, founder of NYC-based Wild Floral Designs, is finding that clients want to evoke an English garden even when the wedding is indoors and in a city; one recent bride did this by requesting an archway with hanging branches and roses. “This new movement feels very earthy, organic and garden-like in a way flowers didn't necessarily feel before, when they felt compact and uniform,” she says. “It's all leaning to a very creative and personalized style for couples to show off what they regard as beautiful and interesting.” BY CHRISTIAN CHENSVOLD

Cristina VERSATILITY DeMarco, VP of New York’s Bridal Reflections, agrees. “Girls are looking to bring back the romance of the A-line, offthe-shoulder and cap sleeve.” Trending: fitand-flare rather than trumpet skirts, and classic boatneck and Bardot necklines. Detachable trains or fuller skirts take a sheath gown from ceremony to reception. Substantial fabrics such as heavy satins and silk failles suit these styles. tirelessly to build a sanctuary for his mission church on Long Island. The watch, which bears an inscription from 1957, is from the only banker who would lend the reverend money for the construction. “I wear my Rolex every day,” says Hinsch, “but when I go to church, it’s always the Wittnauer.” It’s not uncommon for a watch’s story to span generations, even when it just involves digging it out of storage and getting it running again. Take Maxwell Raymond Rich, a 26-year-old attorney in Manhattan. In 1956, his grandfather rewarded himself for his hard work as a stockbroker with a goldplated Omega Seamaster Automatic. Five years later he found himself with a wife and bouncing baby boy. When Rich was set to graduate law school, he, too, decided to reward himself and began talking about buying a watch. That’s when his mother remembered grandpa’s Omega stashed away in a box somewhere, forgotten for decades. “We decided that, in honor of my father’s upcoming 55th birthday, we should have the watch serviced and restored,” recounts Rich. “Omega sent it to Switzerland for six months, and the watch arrived a few days before his birthday. He loves telling the watch’s history and how it pays honor to his father. My brothers and I look at the watch as one of our few heirlooms from Grandfather.” (Hopefully they won’t have to fight over it!) You could say the value of the Omega—the sentimental value, that is—had been reappraised. And isn’t that the nature of younger generations: to value the things of their grandparents’ era, things that their parents deemed old-fashioned or even worthless? We should all aspire to be scrupulous reappraisers of all things in our lives, in an effort to fill them with as much beauty and meaning as possible. BY CHRISTIAN CHENSVOLD

ew luxury brands can create lifestyle marketing campaigns that rival the true stories of real people. Heirloom watches and jewelry pieces are often passed on with tales attached to them—sometimes banal, sometimes sparkling with romantic adventure. The term “sentimental value,” after all, is hardly a sentimental term, for it describes something very real. Some possessions are more valuable to us than their monetary worth would suggest because of the emotions and memories attached to them. That’s why, when we lose something with sentimental value, it really hurts the heart. “I went to Knox College, the same college my father did,” says Jack Dechow. “Right after I decided to attend, my father gave me a watch inscribed with the college’s crest that his parents had given him upon graduation. It was a simple gold watch with a metal band. I wore it a lot over the summer, but it was stolen out of my car the month before I embarked for campus. I really wish I still had it, so I’d have a tangible gift to remember my father and grandfather by when they inevitably pass.” Much has been noted about Millennials’ low interest in things like status logos and analog watches. But it turns out many in this generation value luxury heirlooms more than we expected. To own a fine piece is one thing, but to wear a fine piece with a tale behind it elevates it from mere status symbol and makes the wearer a storyteller. Dr. James Hinsch has a luxury watch of his own—a vintage Wittnauer—also a sentimental keepsake he takes out weekly. His father was a reverend who worked
