2008 ___
A GATHERING SPACE
A Gathering Space was a unique temporary structure and the nation’s first standalone pavilion that acted as a social platform with two distinct areas. On the outside a set of public stairs encouraged informal gatherings, people-watching and play; on the inside a covered area acted as an adaptable sheltered public space. The Scottish-grown European Larch structure was situated next to the world-famous Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia, in the heart of Venice on the banks of the Grand Canal. It was in position for a month and was seen, visited and enjoyed by architects, architectural thinkers, architecture enthusiasts, holiday-makers and the general public. Working under the Biennale theme of Out There: Architecture Beyond Building, an events programme brought together Scottish and international design professionals in a series of discussions exploring Scotland’s urban landscape in an international context, place making and regionalism in architecture. Commissioned by The Lighthouse through a design competition, A Gathering Space was the winning entry by Gareth Hoskins Architects.
