Our own children grew up in the Dojo, attending after school every day to be a part of our teaching,” said Chris. “Like many small business owners know, it’s definitely a labour of love! Our Martial Arts family has become such a critical part of our lives and we hope through creating strong, respectful and kind human beings that we leave a positive mark on the world.
“We believe in having a strong relationship and connection to every single student and family in our business and it’s that personalised care that sets us apart . We are not just a Martial Arts Centre, we are a committed and supportive community.” One teaches Martial Arts, life and social skills to students three year to adults. INGARA Recreation Club would like to congratulate the businesses nominated for this year’s Local Business Awards. The great events at Mingara team have proudly sponsored and hosted the Local Business Awards Gala Presentation evening. Life’s Great
Showcase your business with us
Unlike most awards nights where it may just be the nominee and their partner, the Local Business Awards are a celebration the nominees can share with their families, friends, team, crew or support staff and even with some loyal customers. It is an evening of thanks and celebration for the entire business community to share in and grow together. For the businesses nominated it is a great reward and provides fantastic recognition for their business. The great range of categories to compete in, and with the winners located all over the Central Coast, reflects the strength of our local businesses and depth in services that the Central Coast is proudly supporting.
To be nominated for an award shows that the local community loves what you do and how you are doing it. The finalists not only received the most votes from their local community but were also anonymously judged on the fundamental principles of quality customer service. Sponsoring and hosting such a wonderful local event is a great experience for the Mingara Events Centre team. The positive energy and enthusiasm in the room is uplifting, to learn about the diverse businesses on the Central Coast is engaging and to be able to spoil these business and customer service leaders in our local area with an evening of dining and celebration is a privilege.

Amazing night of celebration IN THEIR OWN WORDS UESDAY August 27 was an amazing night of celebrating the success of local businesses on the Central Coast. We spent the night with amazing people at a gala event for the Local Business Awards at Mingara, after the awards not having been on the Coast for around 12 years. It was an absolute privilege to have been a part of this night and we enjoyed it so much as a team. We had may laughs and had so much fun cheering on all of the fellow winners and finalists. Hearing the success stories of personal achievements of individuals and teams was so good. Each and every finalist and winner on the night deserved to be there and wore their heart on their sleeve representing special business’s which make up our local community. Custom Wholesale Designs was very lucky to have been selected as a finalist in the ‘Specialised Business’ category. What an honour this was to be recognised for our hard work and customer service skills that we pride ourselves on. Unfortunately, we did not win in our business category- A huge congratulations to Blueberry Events, Empire Bay who did. Very well deserved and we wish you all the luck in the world. To our absolute joy, Mel was named winner of Business Person Of The Year Central Coast 2019!!! Mel was given praise for her ability to create a local, national and NZ wide business from the ground up starting out as a ‘one lady show’ in her double garage to build Custom Wholesale Designs to what it is today. She was commended on providing superior
T
product and customer service. She was the winner! We are all so proud and are still very much on a high, trying to find our feet. We are sure Mel will be buzzing for quiet some time, and so deserving she is! Here are some Q&A’s with Mel for some insight to what this means to her: What was your initial thought when you did hear your name? I put my head in my hands and swore under my breath. The whole room felt as though it went silent (although it was far from it). My head was spinning and I just went into auto pilot and got up to make my way to the stage. On my way down there, we were seated right up the back of course, as all as i could do was wipe my tears as I was so overwhelmed that he had said MY name. Why do you think you won? I don’t know! I am just me, a mum, a wife and a person trying my darn best to make a living while helping others to do that also (my staff ). I was honest in everything i said in my submission. I simply told my story. Do you come from a business minded family? Not at all. I come from a lower-class upbringing in Western Sydney and i was raised by a single mum (an awesome single mum!). I had no one in my life to guide me through anything to do with business. I am a smart person and with my little knowledge I had, I researched my heart out the rest, I winged! You must be so proud right now? I am so proud. Words will never explain how appreciative i am. I honestly have worked so had to get where i am. I have sacrificed so much time with my children and family. But i wouldn’t change a thing. I love my staff, my customers and my work.

Munchas Cafe team love their work.
Community support important for cafe IN THEIR OWN WORDS UNCHAS Café & Catering is located overlooking the beach downstairs at the beautiful Shelly Beach Surf Club. We serve breakfast and lunch seven days a week along with providing takeaway food, drinks and off-site catering. We also have a seniors and kids menu to appeal to all our customers. Munchas opened on October 29, 2011. We are a proud, family owned and operated business with Mike and Jo Pennington being the owner / managers. The team that we work alongside everyday are our Munchas family and the backbone of our business with some team members having
M
worked with us since opening the business almost eight years ago. They have grown along with the business and our own personal family as we have had two children since the inception of the business. Our team currently consists of 35 incredibly, hardworking people. We have many local customers who form a beautiful community. Some have become steadfast friends who initially met over a coffee or a meal at Munchas and this makes us so happy being the essence of what we want to provide. For about the last three years we have been a part of the Responsible Cafes movement whereby we take 50c off the price of each coffee sold to customers who supply their own cup to reduce the number of take away cups ending up as landfill.
We are proud to have recently partnered with The Little Big Dairy Co to supply our milk and cream products. Coupled with Crave Coffee this produces a beautiful tasting coffee. The Little Big Dairy Co is a family run business located just outside Dubbo that produces award-winning, single-source milk from one dairy, traceable down to the very cow that made it. Supporting Aussie farmers and local suppliers is so important to us. We also source many of our ingredients locally from companies such as Little Creek Cheese, The Green Tangerine, Fruit for All and Murphy’s Butcher to name a few. We are thrilled to be a Winner in the 2019 Local Business Awards and thank each of you for your custom and support.
