It Begins in December... The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department makes sure that this season is full of activities where citizens will learn, create, and play. Join your fellow Athenians and kick off the holiday season on Thursday, December 4 at the Downtown Parade of Lights. This year’s theme is “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Be part of this family-friendly annual event as it winds through Downtown Athens.

Celebrate the Holidays with art! The annual Holiday Open House at Lyndon House Arts Center is set for Saturday December 6. Festivities will include a visit with Santa Claus, musical performances throughout the day, and holiday inspired treats of all kinds. It’s the most important meal of the day! Memorial Park will present Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 6. If you miss it, don’t worry! Santa will return to Athens for Breakfast with Santa at Sandy Creek Nature Center on Saturday, December 13. Rocksprings Park will host its annual Breakfast with the Grinch on Saturday, December 20. What about a little theatre this holiday season? The historic Morton Theatre has a few family favorites on stage including “The Nutcracker” and “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The Leisure Services Department makes holiday gift giving easier with the Frog Pond Shop at Sandy Creek Nature Center and the Gallery Shop at Lyndon House Arts Center. Include Leisure Services in your next shopping excursion. Celebrate all December long and then it is full steam ahead into 2015 with the many activities and programs planned throughout the Leisure Services Department.

ART EXHIBITIONS Lyndon House Arts Center presents rotating art exhibitions featuring a broad range of works by practicing local and area artists in a variety of media, styles and concepts. From traditional to experimental, works by professional, emerging, young or elder artists can be viewed and enjoyed in galleries. Exhibitions may be guest curated or theme presentations, juried or invitational. When visiting the galleries, please accompany and supervise all children for the safety of the artwork and for artwork content. Period Decorative Arts c.1840-1890 and Athens History Museum Display

The Ware-Lyndon House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, represents a blend of the Greek Revival and Italianate styles. Resplendent furnishings showcase period decorative arts of the mid and late 1800’s. Museum quality memorabilia in the Historic Display Room highlight significant aspects of Athens history. Martin Luther King Sunday Community Celebration Event

An invitational exhibition open to members of the 18 arts organizations and guilds that call Lyndon House Arts Center home. Holiday Open House at the Arts Center

The Ladies Garden Club hosts festive displays of decorations with live greenery in the traditions of the late 1800s, for the historic Ware-Lyndon Historic Museum Holiday Open House. This event includes hands-on crafts for the whole family, as well as musical performances and a visit by Santa Claus. Charity Quilting Bee

Join this friendly group of quilters who create quilts for local and overseas charities. Some quilting experience is necessary. This is a quilting bee of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild, but the public is welcome and membership is not required. All new families are required to attend orientation on Wednesday, January 14 at 5:30 p.m. Failure to attend will result in the student’s registration being cancelled.

Athens-Clarke County residents can register on, Saturday, November 8 from 9:00 a.m. - noon. Non-County residents may register beginning Wednesday, November 12 between 1:00 - 7:00 p.m. If classes are not filled by registration deadline date, registration will continue Monday - Thursday between 1:00 - 7:00 p.m. and Friday’s from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. until classes are filled. Registration must be made by the parent or legal guardian. Registration is held at the East Athens Educational Dance Center, 390 McKinley Drive. Birth certificate is required to register children age six and younger.

Annual Dance Recital

Students enrolled in single classes will have an opportunity to perform in the annual dance recital held at the East Athens Educational Dance Center on April 11 & April 12, providing they meet the requirements. Ballet for Grace & Posture

For the highly motivated student who is inspired to excel in dance! Students are accepted into the accelerated programs by audition or recommendation of the EAEDC teaching staff. Children with at least one year of dance training. These programs offer intensive technical training . The student is expected to improve movement quality, and gain a greater understanding of dance theory and composition. The criteria for acceptance and retaining a position in an accelerated program are as follows: The student’s overall approach to dance needs to be one that exceeds expectations. Upcoming Registration Dates: Winter 2014-2015 Winter Program Registration Begins: Saturday, November 8, 2014 (ACC residents) Wednesday, November 12, 2014 (Non-residents) Registration Fees:

Fees are due at the time of registration. Checks should be made payable to “Athens-Clarke County.” All payments made using a credit card will be charged a $3 “convenience fee” to be added to the cost of services. There is not an additional fee charged for payments made with a debit card.

Refund Policy:

• If a class or program is canceled due to insufficient enrollment or other reason, ACC Leisure Services will issue a full refund to all registered individuals. • No refunds will be granted after the start of the program or class. Collected fees of less than $5 will not be refunded (unless the department cancels the program or class). • Refund requests must be received no less than seven (7) business days prior to the first day of class or program. • Refunds will be assessed a 25% administrative fee. • After the seven (7) day deadline, refunds will not be granted without a written medical excuse from a licensed physician.

Scholarships

Any Athens-Clarke County resident under the age of 18 is eligible for consideration for a scholarship. A list of required documents to determine scholarship eligibility is available by calling 706-613-3800 or at www.athensclarkecounty.com/scholarships Scholarships do not cover admission, entrance, field trips, rental fees, or adult programs. Parents must apply for a scholarship prior to the day of program registration. All scholarships expire June 30 and must be renewed.

Smoking Policy

Sec. 4-3-2. Smoking Prohibited in Athens-Clarke County Facilities. Smoking shall be prohibited in all enclosed facilities of, including buildings owned, leased, operated by the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County. Smoking shall be prohibited within the boundaries of any park, youth sports complex, or recreation area owned, leased, or operated by the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County, including any open area within such park, youth sports complex, or recreation area.
