SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS: • Available to qualifying Athens-Clarke County residents under the age of 18 • Scholarships issued in 25%, 50%, & 75% levels • $400 annual subsidy cap per child
You can also support the P.L.A.Y. Fund, a program to bridge the gap between our scholarships and the cost of our programs.
THINGS TO NOTE: • Individuals may apply for a scholarship at any Leisure Services facility office. • Scholarships take up to 5 business days to process. Scholarships must be submitted at least 5 days before registration. • All Scholarships issued after July 1, 2019 will expire December 31, 2020.

Winter Program Guide Information: Welcome to the 2019-2020 Winter Program Guide. This catalog combines all of the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services programs and events in one easy-to-browse place. Please use the interactive table of contents and hyperlinks in each section to make registration even easier.

You can use the tabs on the top of the screen or search by keyword, location, category, age, or day of the week on the left. 5. Register and Pay. A confirmation email will be sent immediately after checking out. Out- of-county residents pay 50% more than ACC residents. ***If you do not have internet access, you may use one of our community center libraries or resource rooms, or call the specific facility where the program will be held for assistance.

Theatre classes for the cognitively disabled which use simple monologues, readers' theatre skits, and improvisational scenarios to explore the benefits of drama, discover different emotional responses, and build self-esteem and confidence. Classes will be led by ACT staff members, Terry Powell and Daniel Self, as well as therapeutic recreation specialist Brandon Bartlow. Caregivers and guardians are asked to attend class (registration not required for caregivers and guardians accompanying a participant.)

DANCE DANCE CLASSES 12 YEARS & YOUNGER JANUARY 27 - APRIL 10 East Athens Educational Dance Center Classes are $42, unless otherwise noted
AFRICAN DANCE (AGES 6+)
HIP HOP RHYTHM & STYLE (AGES 5-12)
This is a multi-level class for Beginners to Advanced level dancers. Students will learn traditional dances, rhythms, and songs from various countries of Africa. This class will be accompanied by live African drumming.
Hip hop is a high-energy class that infuses the latest styles of street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking. Classes will encourage students to step outside of the box by bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements. Hip hop dance requires students to have the strength and stamina to successfully perform moves. Therefore, the class includes upper and lower body conditioning as well as a rigorous warm-up to help prepare students for more intense movements.

This is an open level program for 4 to 6 year olds. The program concentrates on ballet and tap dance.

This is an open level class for the beginning to moderately trained student. This class introduces the student to the fundamentals of ballet.
CREATIVE MOVEMENT (3 YEAR OLDS) Tuesdays, 4 - 4:30PM
This is a fun and exciting class that introduces students to music and dance.
DANCE & DRUM FOR YOUNG MEN (AGES 7-18) Mondays, 5 - 6PM
Students will learn the fundamental rhythms of drumming and dance, as well as the basics of ballet, intro to modern dance and jazz dance. This all-male class teaches dance from an athletic competitive approach and uses athletically charged movements, including proper warm-ups and how to safely increase flexibility, what a drum break is, and define how to start, stop, or change the speed of the rhythm.
HIP HOP & JAZZ (AGES 5-12) Thursdays, 4:30 - 5:30PM
The Hip Hop and Jazz Dance class will teach students structure of jazz dance, which includes technique, jazz isolations, and locomotor skills. The high energy class is also full of fun and exciting Hip Hop dance movements from a variety of styles. Music selections are clean and age appropriate.

KINDERMOVEMENT DANCE (AGES 4-5) Thursdays, 4:30 - 5:15PM
Students will journey through a creative adventure of dance using props such as hoops and ribbons. Dancing to their favorite music from shows and movies, students will utilize their imagination to explore and express themselves. Along with the fundamentals of dance, children will learn basic dance language in preparation for ballet class.
MODERN DANCE (AGES 5-12) Thursdays, 5:30 - 6:30PM
This is an open level class where students will learn various modern dance techniques ranging in improvisation to Horton Technique.
PERFORMANCE CLASS (AGES 6-15) Thursdays, 5:30 - 6:30PM
Students will learn a (Jazz/Modern) dance to perform in EAEDC Annual Dance Production at the Morton Theatre in Downtown Athens, Ga on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at 7 pm & Sunday, February 23, 2020 at 3 pm. This class is for students who were previously registered in the Winter Performance Class.
TAP DANCE RHYTHMS (AGES 5-12) Wednesdays, 4:30 - 5:30PM
This class introduces the student to a wide range of rhythmic possibilities in tap dance.
TIPPY TOT CREATIVE DANCE (2 YEAR OLDS) Tuesdays, 3:30 - 4PM
This is a fun and exciting class that introduces students to music and dance.

ADULT STRETCH (AGES 16+) Mondays, 7 - 8PM, $27 or $8 drop-in fee
This is an exciting and fun class where students will enjoy stretch and dance movement. The class is open level and for students of all abilities in a non-competitive environment that includes gentle stretching and simple dance moves performed to a diverse range of music from classical to African. Isolations of various parts of the body are executed to provide stress relief and release.
PRE-POINTE (AGES 8-18) Wednesdays, 5:30 - 6:30 PM
Pre-pointe and beginning Pointe are offered in this program. Emphasis will be placed on posture, placement, strengthening of the feet to prepare for Pointe work. Focus will be placed on fine-tuning the body positions correct body placement turnout and alignment. Exercises will be given to strengthen the muscles of the feet, calves and legs to prepare for dancing on Pointe (on the toes). Must have 3+ years formal dance training in Modern or Ballet.

INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED JEWELRY / METALS
Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:30 PM
This class will cover intermediate to advanced level metalsmithing and jewelry techniques. These include use of the jeweler’s saw, fabrication, putting on texture, riveting, soldering, forming techniques, and stone setting. Basic materials, metal (copper and brass) and tools are supplied; an optional materials list will be available. PLEASE NOTE: Students should have jewelry/ metals experience or have taken the beginning Jewelry/Metals class prior to this one.
INTRO TO JEWELRY / METALS Tuesdays, 6:30 - 8:30 PM
This class will cover basic metalsmithing and jewelry techniques including cutting out pieces of metal, putting on texture, riveting, basic soldering skills, basic forming techniques, and setting a cabochon stone. Three finished pieces minimum. Basic materials, metal (copper and brass), and tools are supplied; Beginner to Intermediate.
INTRO TO WHEEL THROWN POTTERY Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:30 PM
This course offers new students a 6 week introduction to the potter’s wheel. Participants will experience basic methods of centering clay, forming cylinder and pottery bowl forms, trimming and adding handles. Students will also learn how to finish their pots using standard decorating and glazing techniques. This class is for students with no prior pottery wheel experience, all are welcome. No previous clay or ceramic experience required. This class may be taken more than once.
MOSAIC ART WITH JANE WRIGHT
Tuesdays, 6:30 - 8:30 PM
This mosaic class will introduce the student to the basics of traditional and contemporary mosaic art. Students will learn a brief history of this art and techniques used to produce mosaics both in the past and today. Topics to be covered include: Choosing a design, using a wheeled glass nipper, glass placement, mosaic terms, tips and tricks, and grouting your mosaic. No previous mosaic experience required.
THE NATURAL WAY TO DRAW WITH TONI CARLUCCI Thursdays, 3:30 - 5:30 PM
As Kimon Nicolaides says “The impulse to draw is as natural as the impulse to talk.” This 6 week course is based on many of the thoughtful and well-developed exercises described by Kimon Nicolaides in his famous book “The Natural Way to Draw”. After years of teaching and writing about drawing, Nicolaides developed a method that truly enables a person to learn to draw in a very natural way. With practice, drawing can become wonderfully relaxing and, well, natural! For those who have previously taken this class and want to develop further, new drawing exercises will be provided over the 6 weeks.” No previous drawing experience required.

ART TIME FOR 4-6 YEAR OLDS I, II, AND III
Art Time class for 4-6 year olds combines artistic technique with authentic selfexpression. Fine art is about creative problem solving and not about just following step-by-step instructions. This one hour class, with a very low child/adult ratio, offers students the opportunity to be curious and open to new ideas, and develop new skills. Young artists will explore a range of fine art media including 2D and 3D, painting, drawing, printmaking, paper-making, video art, and more.

DRAWING AND PAINTING WITH TONI (AGES 7-11) Tuesdays, 4 - 5:30PM
Learning to draw and paint landscapes is so rewarding. And it's fun to add imagination to these landscapes. In this course students will develop drawing skills, especially those that assist with nature and environment. As weather permits, students will draw outside. Students will also learn and develop basic painting skills. Inspired by nature and with brushes, palettes, paint and easels, we will create landscape and nature paintings (real or imagined!). All materials are provided. Note: best to wear clothes that you don't mind getting paint on. $54 + $6 materials fee
HOMESCHOOL ARTISTS (AGES 6-11) Tuesdays, 2 - 3PM
In this 6 week art class, homeschool students ages 6-11 will learn a variety of art techniques, art history, and principles of design while developing creative thinking skills. Use of a cross-curriculum teaching approach is used to reinforce age appropriate learning.
MEDIA ARTS & STORYTELLING (AGES 10-13) Thursdays, 4 - 5:30PM
Young artists will have fun while they create videos that tell an original story by writing storyboards and scripts, designing and building sets, and creating and designing their own props. They will learn to shoot video, work with audio and lighting, and do voice-over acting. The videos will be added to the Arts Center’s YouTube channel and can be shared with everyone. $54 + $6 materials fee

Join naturalists from our community for a guided walk on the trails at Sandy Creek Nature Center. Discover the beauty and variety Sandy Creek has to offer. Then join us inside the Education & Visitor Center for refreshments. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
Do you enjoy listening to frogs calling? Learn to identify and count frogs as part of this citizen science program. You can participate at your own home or join the SCNC monitoring team. The monitoring season is February through August. We ask that volunteers make a commitment to monitor at least twice a month at Sandy Creek Nature Center’s Frog Watch site.

Kick off the New Year with Trails and Open Space. Join us for a First Day Hike at Sandy Creek Park. Burn off those extra holiday calories on this seven mile Lakeside Loop Trail. Wear sturdy shoes and layer-up for this adventure. Bring water and a snack to have on the trail. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Entrance fee is required for Sandy Creek Park.

Do you enjoy being outdoors and sharing our love of nature with children? Become a Volunteer Trail Guide. These special volunteers lead children on hikes around the property when they attend a field study. Volunteers must be available at least one morning a week between 9:30-11:30 am. Need to attend only one (1) morning of training.

Willing to hike off trail in search of cryptids? Evaluate evidence with an open mind and a good sense of humor? Interested in exploring a large tract of land currently undeveloped and closed to the general public? Sign up for Sasquatch Adventure! Participants will meet at the Sandy Creek Nature Center and ride a shuttle van to the Tallassee land tract on the Middle Oconee River. Fearlessly this group, led by highly trained government staff will search for animal signs, evaluate habitats, experiment with calls, and use other techniques in search of Sasquatch. Wear clothes and shoes appropriate for hiking. Pack in water and a snack for this strenuous backwoods adventure. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

ACC Basketball League aims to provide a top quality basketball experience and focuses on teaching fundamental basketball skills, team work, sportsmanship, leadership, and enhancing the mental and physical development of each participant. Students will learn the basic skills and fundamentals of baton twirling including basic twirls, beginner tricks, bodywork, and more! A baton is required for this class and must be ordered at the first class. Participants in this class will not participate in community performances and will not need to purchase uniforms. BATON I (AGES 5-14)
Students will learn the baton twirling fundamentals needed to be successful in Baton II and Baton III. Students will learn basic twirls, beginner tricks, body work, marching techniques, and more! Staff will be present to assist with facilitation and provide adaptations for skill development. If one-on-one supervision is needed, a parent/guardian or other care-giver should be present for the duration of the program.
