SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS: • Available to qualifying Athens-Clarke County residents under the age of 18 • Scholarships issued in 25%, 50%, and 75% levels • $400 annual subsidy cap per child REQUIREMENTS FOR DOCUMENTATION: • Recent Utility Bill (last 90 days) • IRS Tax Form 1040 (with children listed) THINGS TO NOTE: • Individuals may apply for a scholarship at any Leisure Services facility office. • Scholarships take up to 5 business days to process. Scholarships must be submitted at least 5 days before registration. • All Scholarships issued after July 1, 2019 will expire December 31, 2020.


Fall Program Guide Information: Welcome to the 2019 Fall Program Guide. This catalog combines all of the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services programs and events in one easy-to-browse place. A confirmation email will be sent immediately after checking out. *If you do not have internet access, you may use one of our community center library or resource rooms, or call the specific facility where the program will be held for assistance. **Why are there two prices? The first price is for ACC residents. The second price is for out-of-county registrants.

PROGRAMS & WORKSHOPS ASL THEATRE WORKSHOP (AGES 5+)

Mondays, Sept. 9 - Oct. 14 | 4:00PM - 5:00PM | Quinn Hall | FREE!

Athens Creative Theatre in partnership with Hands In Presents will be offering a 6 week ASL (American Sign Language) theatre course teaching members of the Deaf, hearing, and hard of hearing communities the fundamentals of performing theatre in ASL (American Sign Language). The course is instructed by Haley Beech and Amara Ede with assistance from ACT staff members. Participants will use simple scripts to learn to memorize, and perform in American Sign Language as well as learning language basics through theatre.

MONOLOGUES AND MORE (AGES 13+)

Tuesdays, Sept. 10 - Oct. 15 | 1:00PM - 2:00PM | Quinn Hall | FREE!

Classes for the cognitively disabled will use simple monologues, readers’ theater skits, and improvisational scenarios to explore the benefits of drama, discover different emotional responses, and build self-esteem and confidence. Classes will be led by ACT staff members, Terry Powell and Daniel Self, as well as therapeutic recreation specialists Brandon Bartlow. Caregivers and Guardians are asked to attend the class (registration not required for caregivers and guardians accompanying a participant) from ACT staff members.

WIZARDS AND WARRIORS (AGES 10 - 15) Oct. 19 | 12:00PM - 4:00PM | Quinn Hall | $30 / $45

Athens Creative Theatre will be hosting a half-day LARPing (Live Action Role Play) event, which will focus on character development, team building, guided imaginative play, and improvisation skills. Participants will create fantasy characters, learn the rules of LARP combat (foam weaponry) and set of on a mission with their team to solve puzzles, battle foes, and engage in improvisational scenarios with the characters they encounter on their quest.

AFRICAN DANCE

Wednesdays, 5:30 - 6:45PM, $60 / $90

This is a multi-level class Beginner to Advanced level dancers. Students will learn traditional dances, rhythms, and songs from various countries of Africa. This class will be accompanied by live African drumming.

BALLET & TAP FOR 4-6 TUESDAYS, 4:30PM - 5:30PM WEDNESDAYS, 5:30PM - 6:30PM

This is an open level program for 4 to 6 year olds. The program concentrates on ballet and tap dance.

BALLET FOR GRACE ( AGES 5-12) Mondays, 4:30PM - 5:30PM

Open level class for the beginning to moderately trained student. This class introduces the student to the fundamentals of ballet.

CREATIVE MOVEMENT FOR 3 YEAR OLDS Tuesdays, 4 - 4:30PM

Fun and exciting class that introduces students to music and dance.

DANCE & DRUM FOR YOUNG MEN Mondays, 5 - 6PM

Students will learn the fundamental rhythms of drumming and dance, as well as the basics of ballet, intro to modern dance and jazz dance. This all-male class teaches dance from an athletic competitive approach and uses athletically charged movements, including proper warm-ups and how to safely increase flexibility, what a drum break is, and define how to start, stop, or change the speed of the rhythm.

HIP HOP & JAZZ

The Jazz Dance class will teach students structure of jazz dance, which includes technique, jazz isolations, and locomotor skills.

KINDER MOVEMENT DANCE THURSDAYS, 4:30PM - 5:15PM

Introduction to the fundamentals of dance and basic dance language in preparation for a ballet class.

MODERN DANCE

This class introduces the student to a wide range of rhythmic possibilities in tap dance.

An energetic class of singing, dancing, yoga, and rhythm games for children ages 1-5. Students will practice important skills of listening, following directions and developing selfcontrol in a fun and supportive environment. Children ages 1-2 must be accompanied by an adult. Children ages 3-5 may be dropped off or accompanied by an adult.

PERFORMANCE CLASS

This multi-discipline dance class is for the beginner to moderately trained dancer. Students will learn Ballet, Jazz, and Hip Hop dance. This class is geared towards students who want an opportunity to enhance their performance skills. They will be able to perform in the Downtown Parade of Lights and the Holiday show.

TAP DANCE RHYTHMS WEDNESDAYS, 4:30PM - 5:30PM

This class introduces the student to a wide range of rhythmic possibilities in tap dance.

Hip hop is a high-energy class that infuses the latest styles of street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking. Classes will encourage students to step outside of the box by bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements. Hip hop dance requires students to have the strength and stamina to successfully perform moves. Therefore class includes upper and lower body conditioning as well as a rigorous warm-up to help prepare students for more intense movements. 8

This program offers intensive technical training to develop and strengthen posture, placement, flexibility, dance theory and composition. Students are accepted into the accelerated programs by audition or recommendation of the East Athens Educational Dance Center teaching staff only. DANCE CLASSES 13 YEARS & UP

ADULT STRETCH Mondays, 7 - 8PM, $27 or $8 drop-in fee

This is an exciting and fun class where students will enjoy stretch and dance movement. The class is open level and for students of all abilities in a non-competitive environment. Gentle stretching and simple dance moves performed to a diverse range of music from classical to African. Isolations of various parts of the body are executed to provide stress relief and release.

PRE-POINTE Wednesdays, 5:30 - 6:30 PM

Pre-Pointe and beginning Pointe are offered in this program. Emphasis will be placed on posture, placement, strengthening of the feet to prepare for pointe work. Focus will be placed on fine-tuning the body positions correct body placement turnout and alignment. Exercises will be given to strengthen the muscles of the feet, calves and legs to prepare for dancing on pointe (on the toes).

TEEN / ADULT HIP HOP Wednesdays, 6:30 - 7:30 PM

ENAMEL JEWELRY WITH LESLIE LITT Wednesdays, 2 - 4PM

This class will teach the sifting method, including stenciling, overlay, sgraffito, stamping, crackle, and adding embellishments. Design and build ornaments to wear as well as art objects. This class is for the beginner with no experience up to intermediate level. No enamel or jewelry experience required. $111 / $159

INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED JEWELRY / METALS WITH JESSIE JORDAN Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:30 PM

This class will cover intermediate to advanced level metalsmithing and jewelry techniques. These include use of the jeweler’s saw, fabrication, putting on texture, riveting, soldering, forming techniques, and stone setting. Basic materials, metal (copper and brass) and tools are supplied; an optional materials list will be available. PLEASE NOTE: Students should have jewelry/metals experience or have taken the beginning Jewelry/Metals class prior to this one. $111 / $159

INTRO TO JEWELRY / METALS WITH JESSIE JORDAN Tuesdays, 6:30 - 8:30 PM

This class will cover basic metalsmithing and jewelry techniques including cutting out pieces of metal, putting on texture, riveting, basic soldering skills, basic forming techniques, and setting a cabochon stone. 3 finished pieces minimum. Basic materials, metal (copper and brass), and tools are supplied; Beginner to Intermediate. $111 / $159

INTRO TO OIL PAINTING WITH JENNIFER NISWONGER Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:30 PM

This class will cover fundamental techniques and materials in oil painting with an emphasis on painting from life. Students will be given an introduction into life-painting techniques, color mixing and color theory as well as a chance to explore various painting mediums and substrates. No previous painting experience required. Some supplies are provided: an additional list of supplies that need to be purchased by the student will be provided. Beginner. $111 / $159

INTRO TO WHEEL THROWN POTTERY WITH JASEY JONES Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:30 PM

This course offers new students a 6 week introduction to the potter’s wheel. Participants will experience basic methods of centering clay, forming cylinder and pottery bowl forms, trimming and adding handles. Students will also learn how to finish their pots using standard decorating and glazing techniques. This class is for students with no prior pottery wheel experience, all are welcome. Jasey Jones holds a Master of Fine Arts with over twenty years of related experience. No previous clay or ceramic experience required. $111 / $159 10

MOSAIC ART WITH JANE WRIGHT Tuesdays, 6:30 - 8:30 PM

This mosaic class will introduce the student to the basics of traditional and contemporary mosaic art. Students will learn a brief history of this art and techniques used to produce mosaics both in the past and today. Topics to be covered include: Choosing a design. Using a wheeled glass nipper. Glass placement. Mosaic terms. Tips and tricks. Grouting your mosaic. No previous mosaic experience required. $111 / $159

OPEN STUDIO PRESENTS: PAINTING WITH CHARLES Tuesdays, 6:30 - 8:30 PM

Whether you work in acrylic or oil, you’ll benefit from Charles Warnock's individualized approach for the advanced beginner and intermediate painter. Open Studio Members bring in their own subject matter or works in progress and Charles will offer easel side instruction on an individual basis. Open Studio Members bring their own painting supplies and canvas or other painting surface. Charles earned his MFA in painting from UGA and exhibits his large flower paintings regionally.. This is an on-going open studio membership program. Please register for your Open Studio Membership to attend this program. $65 / $97.50

SCREEN PRINTING WITH AMANDA BURK Tuesdays, 6:30 - 8:30 PM

Learn the basics of screen printing in 8 weeks. We will be learning about positive films, color separations, mixing inks & how to coat and reclaim screens. Participants will learn to print an edition of single and multi-color prints on paper (& potentially fabric). $111 / $159

THE NATURAL WAY TO DRAW WITH TONI CARLUCCI Thursdays, 3:30 - 5:30 PM

Learning to draw and paint landscapes is so rewarding. And it's fun to add imagination to these landscapes. In this course students will develop drawing skills, especially those that assist with nature and environment. As weather permits, students will draw outside, Students will also learn and develop basic painting skills. Inspired by nature and with brushes, palettes, paint and easels, we will create landscape and nature paintings (real or imagined!). All materials are provided. Note: best to wear clothes that you don't mind getting paint on. $111 / $159

Learning to draw and paint landscapes is so rewarding. And it's fun to add imagination to these landscapes. In this course students will develop drawing skills, especially those that assist with nature and environment. As weather permits, students will draw outside, Students will also learn and develop basic painting skills. Inspired by nature and with brushes, palettes, paint and easels, we will create landscape and nature paintings (real or imagined!). All materials are provided. HOMESCHOOL ARTISTS Tuesdays, 2 - 3PM

In this 6 week art class, homeschool students ages 6-11 will learn a variety of art techniques, art history, and principles of design while developing creative thinking skills. Use of a cross-curriculum teaching approach is used to reinforce age appropriate learning. $48 / 69

ART TIME FOR 4-6 YEAR OLDS I, II, AND III

Art Time class, with 4-6 year olds, combines artistic technique with authentic selfexpression. Fine art is about creative problem solving and not about just following step-by-step instructions. This one hour class, with a very low child/adult ratio, offers students the opportunity to be curious and open to new ideas, and develop new skills. Young artists will explore a range of fine art media including 2D and 3D, painting, drawing, printmaking, paper-making, video art, and more. $48 / $69

VISUAL ARTS FOR TEENS TEEN SEWING & FASHION CLUB

This is an informal gathering of teens who like to design and sew garments and artworks. Use our fiber studio and machines to focus on your own sewing projects with the guidance of a professional, Tabitha Fielteau. The meeting ends with pizza and conversation.

TEEN CARTOON ILLUSTRATORS CLUB Most Thursdays | 5:30PM - 7:30PM Lyndon House Arts Center, $5 / session

This is an informal gathering of teens who like to draw Anime and cartoons of all kinds. Our talented teaching artist, Robert Brown, continues to contribute wonderful lessons and drawing techniques. The meeting ends with pizza and conversation.

BINGO BASH

Bingo Bash is an opportunity for persons with developmental disabilities to cut loose, relax, and enjoy America’s favorite group game; Bingo. Supplies will be provided and prizes will go to the winners. Due to the nature of the program, Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department is not able to provide one-on-one supervision. Staff will be present to assist with facilitation and provide adaptations for participation.

CULINARY MASTERS

Wednesdays, Sept. 18 - Oct. 9 | 10:30AM - 11:30AM Rocksprings Park, $16 / $24 This program will highlight cooking safety, meal preparation, appetizers, baking, and healthy eating choices. Participants will have fun experimenting with various recipes and tasting final products. Put on your chef hat and become a culinary master.

Classes for the cognitively disabled will use simple monologues, readers’ theater skits, and improvisational scenarios to explore the benefits of drama, discover different emotional responses, and build self-esteem and confidence. Classes will be led by ACT staff members, Terry Powell and Daniel Self, as well as therapeutic recreation specialists Brandon Bartlow. Caregivers and Guardians are asked to attend the class (registration not required for caregivers and guardians accompanying a participant) from ACT staff members. Participants will use simple scripts to learn to memorize, and perform in American Sign Language as well as learning language basics through theatre.

MOVIN' AND GROOVIN'

Moovin' and Groovin' is a dance program for adults with developmental disabilities. This program will highlight introductory dance moves, dances from different time periods and cultures, and social dance. Dance will range from individual dance, partner dancing, to group dances.

This class will focus of the importance of physical wellness through physical education and activity. Participants will learn about how to properly stretch, appropriate workout techniques, breathing and relaxation, and how physical health effects general well-being.

What better way to celebrate Halloween than mixing it with karaoke and bingo! This costume themed event will be the perfect blend between karaoke and bingo sessions.
