Juried Art Exhibition at Lyndon House Arts Center Photo by Shannon Williams Every field of human endeavor has its own form of competition, from athletic tournaments to academic bowls to various contests of skills. Competition or some form of assessment by renowned professionals in a chosen field offers practitioners a way to gauge achievement and to redefine goals as they develop. Art is no different. Though competition in the field of visual arts is more subjective than an athletic race where the clock is the judge, professional art competitions do exist in the form of “juried exhibitions. Artists submit their artwork to be reviewed by the exhibition juror, who selects which pieces will be shown in the gallery. The juror also chooses awards. Juried art exhibitions can be found tucked in almost every corner of the world. Not surprisingly, the variety of shows differs almost as much as the diverse places they are found. The Lyndon House Arts Center Juried Exhibition is held for a cultured and educated community, home to high numbers of artists, many of whom exhibit nationally and internationally. The exhibition has attracted top professionals in the art world as jurors and is highly anticipated each year by artists, patrons and the general public alike. -Dr. Frances Van Keuren, Professor Emerita of Art, Lamar Dodd School of Art, The University of Georgia Learn more about the 36th Juried Art Exhibition on page 4.
