STUDENTS’ GUIDE TO FINDING THE RIGHT ACCOMMODATION Finding somewhere to live with a paint job from this century and a functioning oven seems a straightforward proposition. Unfortunately, the reality is often a blizzard of chilling decisions; frosty landlords and defrosted hopes, dreams and potato waffles. Allow us to turn up the heat on this deep freeze. Our website www. accommodationforstudents.com is a

TYPES OF ACCOMMODATION: There are numerous living arrangements to consider, the five most common being: halls of residence; a house or flat share; a room in a private house; and a private flat. All have their merits, so think about what you want from your accommodation.

Living in a house is a much more intimate experience than halls. Two words: shared bathroom. There are benefits though, and with the right housemates, you’ll have a blast - so make sure you and your housemates are compatible. Start simple: do they like things clean? Disagreements over cleaning can get ugly – and tensions will boil over faster than an ignored

THE BUDGET Money is central to choosing a place, and there are numerous costs to consider. Rent is your main expense, and rates vary throughout the country. A survey conducted by AFS shows the average student rental rates are £79.27 per week in 2013/4. While halls include utility bills (gas, electricity and water) in the price, most house shares don’t; www.glide.uk.com is helpful as it allows tenants to pay individually, so don’t worry if one

There are various options, including Endsleigh (www.endsleigh.co.uk), who have student-specific plans. Finally, you’ll need a TV license to watch TV or stream live programming. This costs £145.50 per year

looks great, there are other factors to consider in the future. Be prepared and make sure to ask a few questions to a prospective landlord. How long has the property been on the market? If the place has been listed for a while, there could be underlying issues. However, you may be able to negotiate the rent if the property is struggling to move. How much is the deposit, and what’s the length of contract? Generally, the deposit is one month’s rent plus £200, and the contract is usually 12 months, with half rent over the summer. In non-student areas, it may be easier to negotiate shorter terms. Is there a break clause in the tenancy agreement? This allows either party to give two months’ notice to end the tenancy after six months. Is the property accredited? The AFS/ Unipol code is a national accreditation scheme for landlords, and has a number of standards that must be achieved in order to gain accreditation. These are assessed through a robust property inspection, so it is well worth asking.

PLACES TO EAT As a diverse city, Coventry is full of tantalising choices when it comes to dining out. Whether you are looking for a quick, cheap and easy lunch, an all-you-can-eat buffet, or a fine dining, three-course meal, there are enough restaurants, cafés, smoothie bars and coffee shops for students on a budget. Here are a few of my favourites: CAFÉ ITALIA ON TRINITY STREET Right in the hustle and bustle of the city centre, Café Italia whisks you away to the rustic charms of Italy, where you can choose from starters, mains, desserts, hot drinks, soft drinks, milkshakes and cakes. Along with the obvious Italian staples, such as, pizza, lasagne, spaghetti Bolognese and pasta arrabiata, you can also choose from freshly -prepared paninis and wraps served with crisps or chips; all day English breakfasts; and fish and scampi. After your meal, you can indulge in one of the biggest hot chocolates in

BEST THING ABOUT DUNDEE The atmosphere. Unlike other cities, there is nothing pretentious about Dundee, and most people out on the town are just looking for a good time. There is something for everyone to do, from nightlife to sport to the arts, so you’re guaranteed to find a part of Dundee that suits and welcomes you! WORST THING ABOUT DUNDEE Quite simply: hills and stairs. Walking from the train or bus station to campus is a pretty long uphill struggle! Be sure to invest in a comfy pair of shoes and minimise those blisters. Most of Dundee’s buildings are a tad ancient and it shows – there are just no lifts anywhere. As most student flats are high up in old buildings, this can be a bit of a problem. It’s especially annoying if you’re struggling up to the fifth floor with heavy bags of shopping, and getting either up or down those stairs whilst tipsy with heels on could be a

When everyone is ready, we order our Amber Cars taxi (the best in Leeds) and head to Wire - an underground club with the best alternative playlist. After having each song requested and played, we will head to Call Lane where it is cocktails galore and there’s a huge variety of cool bars with free entry.

PLACES TO EAT Jesmond has an array of cute cafe’s and a Starbucks if you’re craving a Frappuccino. Likewise, there is The Fat Hippo restaurant - a favourite among students - which also has a deli across the street. Well, there is no other place than Osborne Road, which is bustling with bars, all of which have offers throughout the week to suit every student’s pocket. From Spy Bar to Osborne’s, they all offer a great atmosphere and lots of cocktails if you want a sophisticated vibe. Also, just a short walk away towards Sandyford is Mr Lynch, if you want to have a bit of a dance. ACCOMMODATION Rental rates are significantly higher in Jesmond, due its popularity, with average weekly rents of £79. One thing I do love about Newcastle, is that every Sunday there is a market at the Quayside. You can walk along the river and take in the views whilst finding a bargain and munching away on fish and chips or a Mexican wrap.

Describing a perfect day in York is a tricky task indeed – the town offers so many opportunities that any combination makes for a really great day. If you do not feel like making your own breakfast or have to go to Uni early in the morning, there are countless bars on campus – Da Vinci, V Bar, Edgebar just to name a few, and Courtyard, which is probably the most popular among students.

If some shopping needs to be done, I would probably go

adjacent to York Shambles, an iconic medieval street of York. When the shopping is finally over, I would head to Spring Espresso with friends and relax a bit, enjoying the best coffee in town and a home-made cake. I have always been keen on history, so living in such an ancient place is a blessing! One of the city’s most precious gems is York Minster, the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. Only when you walk down the Nave gazing at the ceiling can you really notice the hugeness of the building. To learn more about local history, I visited the Castle Museum. They have reconstructed a whole street from the Victorian era, including all the shops, houses and secret passages – it sometimes feels more like a film set than an ordinary museum! If you are not a faint-hearted person, you will surely enjoy the York Dungeon while coming face-to-face with all the sinister characters from the city’s dark past… What I really like about York is that it is very sportfriendly. If you happen to be on campus or nearby you can always visit the new York Sport Village, which has a wellequipped gym and a swimming pool. What I personally prefer, however, is to do some bouldering at The Red Goat Climbing Wall – it never gets boring!

University is a great time to have a band, with all the like-minded, new people that you meet and the free time that would otherwise be invested in day-time TV but it also gets very busy very suddenly as a band can. It’s just about having the balance so that you can invest in whichever snowballs first I suppose.
