ACADÉMIE DU VIN LIBRARY 2025

Welcome to the Académie du Vin Library. We were founded by Steven Spurrier and Hugh Johnson to publish the best wine writing and we hope you will find titles for every facet of your interest in wine in this catalogue.
With last year’s acquisition of the Classic Wine Library we are now the world’s leading wine publisher, offering over 100 titles that focus on fascinating wine regions, hero winemakers and wines you will want to know more about. We are proud to number many of the world’s greatest wine writers and most respected experts on our list. And we choose our books with care – above all for their readability, but also because we genuinely believe they have something important to say about the world of fine wine that will enhance your drinking pleasure.
Our books aim to bring you the best of modern wine writing and to provide the colour, the background and the essential understanding on which any true enjoyment of fine wine depends. We also bring you books published by other wine publishers and writers who we believe need the specialist audience only we can provide. And we publish beautiful new editions of old books with updates and additional material that make them relevant to a modern readership without in any way altering the charm or the essential wisdom of the originals. Fine wine writing, like wine itself, represents an accumulation of knowledge over the ages.
Our aim is to pick the best and to let it breathe again. Enjoy.

A geologist wanders through the world of wine
ALEX MALTMAN
Burgundy thrives on the limestone remnants of a warm, shallow sea while Sancerre and Pouilly wrap their roots around flint. The finest Pomerols bloom in a ‘button’ of blue clay, and Beaujolais famously begins life in granite. Cabernet Sauvignon loves just about any sandstone and Champagne gets on gloriously with chalk. But is the secret to great port really schist? Alex Maltman, Emeritus Professor of Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University, finds himself between a rock and a vineyard place as he explains how a wine’s flavours relate to the geology at foot, and discovers that there is more to ‘minerality’ than mud, rocks and the earth’s stark materials... Terroir is as intrinsic to the quality of a wine as the grapes it comes from or the intentions of the winemaker. This beautifully produced and illustrated book looks at the many factors that influence, or don’t, how a wine tastes. Professor Maltman poses lots of questions and answers many, while busting some myths along the way.
About the author Alex Maltman is Emeritus Professor of Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University, Wales, UK, and is the author of Vineyards, Rocks and Soils: A Wine Lover’s Guide to Geology (Oxford, 2018).

Discover the truth about so many wine mysteries
Much of what is written about wine, whether in books, on bottle labels or in the Sunday supplements, uses language that gives wine an air of mystery. While sometimes compelling and enticing for the consumer, this can also lead to confusion regarding the science of wine, as well as fear on the part of the inexperienced wine drinker of ‘getting wine wrong’. In
The Cynic’s Guide to Wine, Sunny Hodge strips wine back to its basic science and unravels the facts behind wine flavours, showing readers a clear path through the verbiage. The text takes in elements of horticulture, soil science, botany and sensory science as well as oenology and is provided in bite-sized chunks aimed at the curious non-scientist. This is a straightforward and eye-opening book for anybody who has ever wanted to question the stories told around wine but was afraid to ask.
About the author Sunny Hodge completed a degree in Mechanical Engineering before embarking on a career in hospitality, after which he worked his way up from fast food restaurants to become a founding team member at Paulo de Tarso and Nicholas Jaouën’s London restaurant, Margot. Currently he is the founder and owner of two wine bars in south London, Diogenes the Dog and aspen & meursault, for which he was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year at the Southwark Business Awards. Both wine bars showcase unusual and lesser-known wines and share Sunny’s mission to educate customers about wine.
❝ There’s a lot packed into this book, and it’s full of interest for the wine-curious.
Up to date and topical, this is a welcome addition to the current wine literature ❞
– JAMIE GOODE

ELAINE CHUKAN BROWN
A concise, smartly delivered and cohesive book for serious readers and students of wine that takes us on a journey through the length and breadth of the Golden State, paying due attention to famous wine destinations such as Sonoma and Napa but also seeking out exciting lesser-known regions to explore. The book is divided into three sections. The first looks at Californian wine in the context of the state's history, addressing key issues such as Indigenous Peoples and land ownership, immigration and labour disputes, the back-to-the-land movement, environmental protest and innovations in sustainability. The second section examines each major region in turn, including its history, growing conditions and grape varieties, along with its most significant and interesting producers. The final section looks at current themes in Californian wine and discusses what the future holds for what is currently the world's fourth biggest wine producer.
About the author Elaine Chukan Brown is a writer, speaker, and global wine educator whose writing credits include Wine Enthusiast, JancisRobinson.com, Decanter and Wine & Spirits magazine, as well as the World Atlas of Wine and the compendiums On Burgundy and On California published by Académie du Vin Library. From Catalunya to Cadiz
SARAH
The companion volume to the author’s The wines of northern Spain explores the great variety of wines produced across the rest of Spain. Beginning in the east with Catalunya, the book journeys south down the Mediterranean coast to the Levante. The heart of Spain, including Madrid and La Mancha, is explored before we reach Andalucia in the south and voyage on to the Balearic and Canary Islands. The regions covered could not be more different, separated by language, customs and history as well as by gastronomy and wines. After a chapter on key grape varieties the author explores each region in turn, relating its history, exploring current trends in winemaking and viticulture, and profiling the key producers. There is also a chapter on Spain’s sparkling wines.
About the author Sarah Jane Evans MW is an award-winning wine writer, journalist, certified Sherry educator and speaker at conferences worldwide. She is Co-Chair of the Decanter World Wine Awards and Chairman of the Gran Orden de Caballeros del Vino as well as one of three series editors for The Classic Wine Library. She is a former Chairman of the Institute of Masters of Wine, and a winner of the WSET’s Outstanding Alumni Award. Twice named winner of Outstanding Communicator of the Year for Spain, Sarah Jane is also recipient of an Outstanding Contribution Award from Rioja.

Expert authors unravel the truths of this enchanted vineyard – its tortured landscape of clashing mountains and upended seas, its mysterious Etruscan forebears, the Medici aristocrats and warring tribes who fought to control it. And the stoic peasants, whose thwarted creativity and intuitive ways with wine won through in the end. It tells the story of its king of grapes, Sangiovese, and the courtiers that grapple for its throne, and of the maverick winemakers who harness this region’s passion for wine today, steadying the rollercoaster before it once again goes too far and too fast…
With contributions from Andrew Jefford, Hugh Johnson, Nicolas Belfrage MW, Jancis Robinson MW, David Gleave MW, Walter Speller, Gabriele Gorelli MW, Burton Anderson, Ruth Rogers, Neil Beckett, Victoria Moore, Gerald Asher, D. H. Lawrence and Fiona Morrison MW.
