Jerry Schatzberg

I

n 1965 Jerry Schatzberg was photographing a job and had some fortuitous company. Famed music journalist Al Aronowitz and disc jockey Scott Ross were discussing Dylan and a recent performance they had seen. Half listening he volunteered that he’d like to photograph the singer. The very next day Dylan’s new wife (a friend of Schatzberg’s) called and gave him an invitation to the studio where Dylan was currently recording ‘Highway 61 Revisited’. Schatzberg set off the very next day, exactly six days after the Newport Folk Festival where Dylan ‘went electric’ and was collectively booed. Schatzberg received a warm welcome from the singer and the images that emerged from that day make obvious the comfortable and relaxed atmosphere that is already brewing between them. Working and socializing together, Schatzberg would do nine more photo shoots with Dylan from 1965-6, arguably the singer’s most creative period, and capture the (now) Nobel laureate during one of the pivotal moments in music history. Each session says something different about Dylan and manages to perfectly capture the many facets of one of the most unique, complex and mysterious individuals of all time.

Final Works of the Great Masters Bernard Chambaz

R

esearching a painter’s death is an easier task than determining which of their works is truly their ‘last’. Paintings tend to be dated by year and not month, inciting much debate among art historians. This book embraces this ambiguity, studying 100 examples of works that lay completed for several years, or were left unfinished on the easel, or were finished post-mortem by a friend’s grieving hand. The Last Painting collects 100 last paintings from 100 artists, including Dalí, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, Goya, Pollock, Rembrandt, Dix, Bonnard, Titian, and many more. Each picture gives us a glimpse into the painter’s mind. Did they know death was coming? Did they paint with denial, or acceptance? Did they return to a favorite subject, or decide to embark on a new, original project while they still had time? A poetic and thought-provoking book, The Last Painting is a sensitive exploration of the relationship between art and death.

n the morning of Thursday, September 12, 1963, noted fashion photographer Norman Parkinson was to photograph a young pop group from Liverpool. Earlier that year, the band had exploded onto the scene - releasing the first of eleven (out of twelve) studio albums that would reach number one in the charts. That band was The Beatles. The album had been ‘Please Please Me’, it was still number one and it would stay at number one for thirty weeks. Parkinson, already established as Britain’s most famous photographer, had a date with its new greatest band. Revealing, insightful, and funny, this collection of photos captures The Beatles near the start of their spectacular career. Now, ACC Editions, in collaboration with The Norman Parkinson Archive and Iconic Images, presents this historic meeting between a new music group and one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. Covering nearly 30 rolls of film, these images of The Beatles at the President Hotel in Bloomsbury and famed Abbey Road Studios, offer a rare insight of the making of an iconic band.

hen the acclaimed photographer Tom Murray was invited to tag along on an early morning photoshoot in 1968 he had no idea what he would be walking into. He opened the studio door to find Paul, George, Ringo, and John with Yoko Ono. Over the course of a frantic day, rushing around London from one publicity shoot to the next, Tom, the youngest photographer present, caught some of the most iconic color photographs ever taken of The Beatles. The following day, The Beatles went on to record Hey Jude. Having arrived with only two rolls of film, Tom selected the 23 images he considered best. These were exhibited in 1998 after almost 30 years in storage, where many acclaimed them as the very best color photos of the band. Now, two decades later, these photographs are back together, gathered in a volume no fan would want to be without.

Just turn over a few pages of this breath-taking book and you will see what I mean”. - Michael Palin Emperor: The Perfect Penguin is a celebration of one of the world’s most charismatic creatures. In temperatures that can reach -58°F with 90 mph winds, the emperor penguins’ ability to survive and thrive is nothing short of astounding. Over the past nine years, award-winning photographer Sue Flood has journeyed to remote Antarctic penguin colonies to capture the birds in their native home. Sue Flood’s respect for her subjects emanates from every page. From the poignant sight of an egg abandoned on the sea ice, to majestic shots of emperor penguins returning from the sea and heart-warming photos of chicks clustering together for warmth, every shot explores a new angle of life in this remote and ice-crusted world. As well as following the difficult journey of the penguins across the sea ice, Emperor: The Perfect Penguin narrates the hardships that must be endured to catch the perfect photograph. Sue’s behind-the-scenes experiences prove that it is only with patience, endurance, and several thermal layers that one can capture magical moments on Earth’s most inhospitable continent.

erry O’Neill is one of the greatest living photographers today. His iconic images of Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Brigitte Bardot, Faye Dunaway, and David Bowie - to name but a few - are instantly recognizable. Now, for the first time, O’Neill selects a range of images from his extensive archive of “vintage prints”. Long before the age of digital, photographers would send physical prints to the newspapers and magazines. These prints were passed around, handled by many, and often times captioned. After use, the prints were either filed away, thrown out or - for the lucky few - sent back to the photographer or their photo agencies. At the dawn of the 1960s, when O’Neill’s career began, physical prints were the norm. Terry kept as many as he could that were sent back to him. This book collects hundreds of these rare images, a true must for Terry’s fans and photography collectors.

rom unexpected late-night calls from Romy Schneider, to a stay at Paul Newman’s home in Connecticut; from working on set with Bernardo Bertolucci, Werner Herzog, Steven Spielberg and Sydney Pollack, to lounging poolside with Raquel Welch; Sereny reveals her favorite moments from working behind the lens. This is the first photographic retrospective of Sereny’s starstudded career, including nearly 100 neverbefore-seen images complemented by Eva’s own stories. Eva Sereny started her career in photography in the late ‘60s and she quickly rose to prominence in her field, despite that photography was very much seen as a ‘male’ art. She shot the greatest stars of the day Paul Newman, Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, and many more. Her work on film sets developed her passion for cinematic direction; her short film ‘The Dress’, starring Michael Palin, received the British Academy Award (BAFTA) and the Chicago Golden Plaque. Having her work featured on the covers of major magazines, such as The Sunday Times Magazine, Observer Magazine, Vogue, Elle, Paris Match, Harper’s Bazaar, Time and Newsweek, Eva’s credentials are as glittering as her photographs. ith Surf Tribe, photographer Stephan Vanfleteren shows that there is far more to surf culture than just sport and competition. Surfing is also about a deep admiration and respect for the ocean, as well as the feeling of insignificance when confronted with the forces of nature. Vanfleteren looks beyond the traditional borders of the United States and Australia and searches the globe for people who live in places where sea and land meet. He documents a fluid community, with nature as its sole leader. He has sought out young talent, living icons, and old legends, both competitive and free surfers. The photographs here are serene black and white portraits in Vanfleteren’s wellknown, haunting style; as always, he reaches below the surface and goes to the core of his subjects. n 2015, portrait photographer Robin de Puy (Dutch, b. 1986) traveled across America on a motorcycle for her book If This is True. Her 8,000-mile road trip had almost come to an end as she rode her Harley-Davidson through Ely, Nevada on 7 July 2015. That night a young boy rode past her; in the split second she saw him she knew she had to find out who this boy was. His name was Randy. De Puy took his portrait, left town a few days later, and that was it - or so it seemed. Back home in Amsterdam, Randy popped into her mind from time to time. From the end of 2016 to May of 2017, she met him three more times. In the photographs from these encounters, de Puy turns him inside out, looks at him, stares at him - and Randy lets her.

The men and women he portrayed were his friends and neighbors: Native Americans living in the reservation. Using a big studio camera and glass negatives, he made photos with tremendous depth, most of which have never been seen by the public. Now for the first time these photos are published in a book. he Konyaks - a once fearsome headhunting tribe in Nagaland on the border of Myanmar in northeast India - are well known for their iconic body and facial tattoos, originally earned for taking an enemy’s head. This book is the personal journey of a Konyak woman who retraces the steps of her grandfather and great-grandfather by documenting her tribe’s tattooing practices. She explores the Konyak’s concept of beautification of the body using it as a canvas for art, with inscriptions marked on the skin as a form of rite of passage and cycle of life. Lila De Nobili Edited by Claudie Gastine & Francesca Simone

P

aris cats have been celebrated by painters, writers and chansonniers since the 19th century. An important place among these artists is occupied by Lila De Nobili, who moved to the French capital in 1945 and never left the 6th arrondissement, its quintessential neighborhood. She painted and designed stage sets for the Scala in Milan, the Opéra in Paris, the Covent Garden in London and many other theaters. Sought by the most famous directors, she designed costumes for Maria Callas, Edith Piaf, Audrey Hepburn and Ingrid Bergman. In 1968, she devoted herself exclusively to painting, and adopted her first cat, Ulysse. The feline family soon grew and Lila never tired of sketching them, drawing them, or painting them in watercolor. Most of these intimate works were gifted to a friend by Lila in her last years and thanks to this collection a book can now be published.

ounded in 1932, the Folger Library in Washington, D.C. is the world’s largest Shakespeare collection. It hosts millions of visitors - in person and online - each year. raditional Indian Jewellery: Beautiful People is a vast and detailed publication covering the importance of ritual adornment, and the popular design motifs featured in traditional Indian jewelry. Its companion volume, Traditional Indian Jewellery: The Golden Smile of India explores the rich heritage of Indian jewelry and its significance in past and present Indian society. Jewelry plays an important part in the everyday lives, important moments, festivals and religious aspects of Indian culture. It is not only girls and women who wear jewelry, but also boys, men, temple statues and even animals. The books excel in their detailed descriptions, which accompany the sumptuous array of images. These publications are the result of thirtyfive years of research - traveling, studying, and talking to many people across the entire subcontinent of India, as well as having had unprecedented access to goldsmiths and enamellers; being shown techniques known only to one family, which have been transferred from generation to generation; and being granted access to beautiful and never before seen Royal collections.

rench-born Brigitte Singh first came to Sanganer, Jaipur’s hand-block printing center, as a student of miniatures three decades ago. Since then she has gained an international following for her textiles. This richly produced volume illustrates how Singh has approached her craft with an archeologist’s devotion, uncovering the long-obscured story of block printing in the subcontinent. Her work provides an alternate way to interpret the comingling of medieval and modern ideas through the evolution and transmission of motifs and craft techniques over centuries. Today, from her studio and production facility, she creates clothing and accessories as well as designs artisanal fabrics and furnishings for customers around the world. Her pieces are also in major museum collections including London’s V&A and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. While her exquisite work yields a truly Indian aesthetic, her appeal is undeniably global.

I

n Hindi ‘pukka’ means genuine, authentic, complete. Design in India is not only determined by the aesthetic appeal of the object, but also by the significance of the object in the everyday life of its users. In some instances, the age-old practices established by ancient Indian wisdom determine the design of an object, such as the datun (neem tree twig) recommended for oral care or agarbatti (incense) used to heal and protect. On the other hand, the lota (a kind of metal pot) has been a part of everyday Indian life for centuries and its design remains unchanged even today. Pukka Indian, or Purely Indian, brings together 100 objects that are the most coveted symbols representing Indian culture and design. This illustrated book celebrates the diversity, versatility, vibrancy, and colours of design icons that set them apart in a country as multifarious as India.

anish design is inextricably linked with the design icons of the twentieth century. From Kaare Klint via Arne Jacobsen to Verner Panton, they have influenced the product and home decor culture for decades. However, equally significant designers, craftspeople and internationally observed trends that preceded this era receives far less attention. Yet it is Skønvirke, the Danish form of Art Nouveau, that created the basis for modern Danish design. In this compilation of Danish works, Art Deco trends are linked to those of functionalism. ‘Made in Denmark’ was finally established as an international brand by 1945. Danish, and by extension Scandinavian, design has been a role model ever since and remains the epitome and expression of a timeless modern lifestyle to this day.

ohn William Godward (1861-1922) was an English painter who worked in the late classical Victorian style of Frederick Leighton and more specifically with Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Many of his paintings feature women in vibrantly colored classical drapery, standing in front of marble plinths and parapets. Swanson’s original edition of John William Godward, published in 1998, introduced the life of a very private and eccentric man. In his suicide note, he compared himself to Picasso, noting that the world wasn’t big enough for both of them. This revised edition contains the author’s latest research, including significant expansions to the text, as well as approximately 100 new pictures, many of which have only recently been attributed to Godward.

illiam Bouguereau, the most popular artist in nineteenth-century France, is rapidly becoming one of the most popular realist artists of all time. This book is an exploration of the four main types of paintings that were most prevalent throughout Bouguereau’s body of work. This includes his mythological works, religious works, peasants, and portraits. This final section on portraits focuses on paintings of heads and hands, which gave the artist the opportunity to concentrate on the subtleties of capturing human emotion, something at which the artist was a consummate master, and is a primary factor in what makes his works, in general, so compelling. Although each section of the book discusses the importance of the individual genera within Bouguereau’s oeuvre, and includes painting analyses to highlight his most important works, this book is a true showcase of the master’s achievement through beautifully illustrated full-page plates of over 120 of his greatest masterpieces.

How do we preserve certain distinctive qualities while we are merging with machines? Will we outsource love and affection to robots? hether pizza is served as high-end cuisine or a poor man’s food, this global product transcends the boundaries of culture and social class. It is so much more than just something we eat. Aside from culinary considerations, the preparation, consumption and ubiquity of pizza involves at least as many social aspects. These must be taken into account in order to understand the entirety of this phenomenon. For instance, in sociology the ‘pizza effect’ refers to reciprocal processes of reception and exchange and thus to the constant transformation of cultures. ften dismissed merely as Fragonard’s sister-in-law, Marguerite Gérard (French, 1761-1837) was in fact one of the major artists working in France in the late eighteenth century. Initially Fragonard’s pupil, then his assistant and finally his collaborator, she found success as an artist in her own right, becoming known for her portraits and sometimes voluptuous genre scenes. The only female genre artist of her time, she excelled in the treatment of reflections and surfaces, in the rendering of flesh, and in domestic scenes of daily life. Standing alongside Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun and Adélaïde Labille-Guiard, Marguerite Gérard is another in the distinguished company of French female artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries whose major talents and formidable characters are now being rediscovered. Kansas City Houses 1885-1938 Michael C. Kathrens

K

ansas City has a rich heritage of residential architecture that speaks to the importance of this Midwestern metropolis during its boom years between 1880 and 1930. The forty houses covered here were erected by the city’s leading plutocrats, such as newspaper publisher William Rockhill Nelson, whose fortune helped establish the NelsonAtkins Museum; minerals magnate August R. Meyer; lumber baron Robert A. Long; oilman Ernest C. Winters; and Walter E. Bixby of Kansas City Life Insurance. Among the noted architects profiled are Edward W. Tanner; Henry F. Hoit; Louis S. Curtiss; the New York firm of George Brown Post in collaboration with Kansas City based architect Roger Gilman (Dean of RISD, 1919-1929); and Mary Rockwell Hook (one of the first women to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris). Most of these houses were designed in the European and American revival styles prevalent during this period, although distinguished by a unique Midwestern sensibility.

rown moldings or cabinetry? Vintage or Victorian? Orange or ocher? Successful interior design - creative, comfortable rooms with a personal touch - is built from layer upon layer of color, texture, pattern, embellishment, and more. But the plethora of choices available in the early twenty-first century has made it almost impossible to assemble these layers thoughtfully. Prominent decorator and author Penny Drue Baird is here to help with On Interior Design, an incisive exploration of the essential aspects of contemporary interiors. Baird considers architectural details, furniture, color, fabric, flooring, lighting, and accessories, offering equal servings of expertise, history, and recommendation. She illustrates her topics with dozens of photographs of her own work, from apartments in New York City to houses in the Hamptons and Palm Beach to a residence in Paris. Building on her three previous books, in On Interior Design Baird imparts the lessons and principles gleaned from her thirty-plus years in practice.

These drinks helped shape our culture; inspired authors and painters; brought both anarchy and harmony and even, in some cases, induced mass hysteria. In 10 Drinks That Changed the World, bartender, poet and writer Seki Lynch tells the stories behind the spirits. Tracing the origins of each drink, he dissects the ingredients and locates the first makers, exploring how perceptions and consumption levels have ebbed and flowed through the centuries. Cocktail recipes, lists of artisan makers and insights from the great, good and notorious drinkers of history help complete the résumé for each drink. London artist Tom Maryniak has created original illustrations of each drink for the book.

They make the trip from the countryside to the city to sell fruits, flowers, food and a whole variety of other goods. The merchandise is carefully displayed in baskets, and balancing these on their bicycles the vendors walk the streets of Hanoi in search of customers. Dutch photographer Loes Heerink became intrigued with the vendors and their stories, but photographing them in the overcrowded streets proved a challenge. The History of a Legend

Text by Guillaume Picon, Photography by Benjamin Chelly, Preface by Sir Kenneth Branagh

T

he first train to connect Paris to Constantinople - the gateway to the Orient and epitome of all its associated desires and fantasies - the Orient Express was an immediate success. Quickly nicknamed ‘the king of trains, the train of kings’, it had already become a legend in its own time. This unique train and its celebrated passengers (both real and fictional) have become one of the great cultural icons of our times and have helped to create a limitless source of stories and fantasies to feed our imaginations. It’s a story told here through fabulous new photographs of the restoration workshops where the historic train carriages are being brought back to life, through archive photos of famous and exotic destinations, and portraits of the most famous passengers who were lucky enough to climb aboard.

“The Orient Express, in the collective imagination, embodies the golden age of travel. The fabrics, the silverware, the woodwork; their evocative fragrance... all contribute to this particular atmosphere, created by the best craftsmen of the time. t the end of the 19th century, the antiacademic movement pushed Brussels’ architects towards Art Nouveau. Both Victor Horta, in an organic style, and Paul Hankar, in a more geometrical tendency, created an architecture that quickly gained an international reputation. In a little more than a decade, from 1893 on, hundreds of Art Nouveau-fashioned buildings appeared in Brussels. This book offers nine walks to discover - in different districts - the multiple aspects of architectural Art Nouveau in Brussels. Witness the personal style of the most important architects as well as decorative methods such as sgraffito. Through interviews with owners, custodians and restorers of Art Nouveau-styled buildings, Brussels Art Nouveau describes the fundamentals of this remarkable heritage. ACC ART BOOKS FALL 2018

imon de Burton journeys through some of the most coveted cars of the twentieth century. From the Alfa Romeo 6C to the Porsche 996 GT3, the author has chosen cars from each decade from the 1930s to the early 2000s, his choices made from the perspective of the enthusiast and collector. All are considered ‘milestone’ cars and all have risen substantially in value in the past five to ten years. They are not all necessarily the fastest, rarest or most valuable cars, but they are all highly significant and highly regarded. These are the cars that should have been bought when they were new and kept for the future - now that they are truly desired.
