This lot is 705 feet (215 meters) long, with an east-west incline. It has magnicent views of the Andes mountain range to the east and Santiago to the west. The client wanted a house reminiscent of those found in the Santiago countryside, and preferred to use adobe and wood in the construction.

El sitio tenía 215 mts. de largo con pendiente oriente - poniente. Tiene a su vez magnicas vistas de la Cordillera hacia el oriente, y de Santiago hacia abajo por el poniente. El cliente deseaba una casa que recordara las casas de campo. Quería utilizar adobe y madera en la construcción, materiales que disponía.

The house is set in the middle of the site, dividing the lot into two parts. At the entrance, which rises toward the house, an oval pond is designed. This is very characteristic of rural houses.

La casa se instaló en la mitad del sitio dividiendo el terreno en dos. En el acceso que sube hacia la vivienda se diseñó un estanque de agua ovalado, solución muy característica en casas rurales.

This house combines two elements. A colonnade, whose partial or total closure produces a varied range of interior and intermediate spaces, extends toward both sides of the terrain, culminating at one end with a pergola over the pond, and at the other end with a water fountain. The other element comprises cubical volumes of adobe that resembles a small town under the colonnade. The volume that comprises the living and dining rooms crosses the colonnade. The house is divided into three areas. The bedrooms are located to the north, forming a small interior square to be used as a den. Located in the center of the house are the living and dining rooms, with a library suspended on the upper level. The service areas and parking are located to the south. 44

La casa misma combina dos elementos. Uno son volúmenes cúbicos de adobe que semejan un pequeño poblado. El volumen correspondiente al estar y comedor es de doble altura. El otro es un “parrón” cuyo cerramiento parcial o total produce una variada gama de espacios internos e intermedios. Este “parrón”, se extiende hacia ambos lados del terreno rematando en un extremo en una pérgola dentro del estanque de agua y, en el otro, en una fuente de agua superior. Este parrón cubre el poblado y es traspasado por el alto volumen del estar-comedor. La superposición de ambos elementos (poblado y parrón) conforma la vivienda. La casa se divide en tres áreas. Al norte se ubican los dormitorios conformando una plazuela como estar informal. Al centro de la vivienda se ubica el gran volumen del estar y comedor con una biblioteca suspendida en segundo nivel. Más al sur se ubican los servicios y estacionamientos.

Avenida El Bosque and two small streets border the site, but its actual southern border is Avenida Tobalaba, which runs diagonally on the other side of the San Carlos canal.

El terreno limita con la Avda. El Bosque y, además con dos pequeñas calles. Pero su límite virtual por el Sur es la Av. Tobalaba que cruza en diagonal el área junto con el Canal San Carlos.

The project involves two long volumes that create a gallery, enabling access. One volume, which is attached to the neighboring building, comprises three levels, while the main volume has 17 levels and stretches 246 feet (75 meters) in length. This volume bends on its western façade to align with the axes of both El Bosque and Tobalaba. The acute angle that is produced serves as a symbolic commencement of El Bosque.

El proyecto contempla dos largos volúmenes que conforman una galería que contiene los accesos. Un cuerpo adosado al vecino tiene tres niveles, mientras el cuerpo principal tiene 17 niveles y 75 mts. de largo. Este cuerpo se curva en su fachada poniente para alinearse con los ejes de El Bosque y Tobalaba. El ángulo agudo que produce sirve de inicio simbólico de Av. El Bosque.

The building was divided vertically, leaving the lower floors to Consorcio Company and the 14 others as offices to rent. Both areas have independent access and vertical circulations.The entrances are at the end of the gallery. For Consorcio, the entrance is to the south, while the offices have their access to the north, on the second level.This area forms a balcony to the first level, leaving both areas visually linked. The treatment of the façades deserves special attention. Any western-facing façade in Santiago suffers from serious heating problems during the summer. Therefore, technical and natural resources were incorporated into the building, producing a double façade—an inner with curtain wall and an outer with vegetation. » 88

El edificio fue sectorizado verticalmente, quedando los pisos inferiores para el Consorcio y los catorce superiores para renta. Ambas áreas tienen acceso y circulaciones verticales independientes. Los accesos están en los extremos de la galería. Al Consorcio se entra por el Sur, mientras a las oficinas de renta se entra por el Norte, a segundo nivel. Esta zona se balconea sobre la primera, quedando ambos accesos visualmente relacionadas. El tratamiento de las fachadas mereció especial atención. La orientación Poniente produce en Santiago graves problemas de calor en el Verano. Por lo mismo, en el edificio se trabajó con medios técnicos y naturales, produciendo una doble fachada: una interior con termopaneles y otra exterior con vegetación. Esta “doble piel vegetal” reduce la absorción solar. Además transforma el edificio en un jardín vertical de 89

This “double green skin” (see also House on Paul Harris Street, page 58) reduces the solar absorption. In addition, it transforms the building into a vertical garden of about 29,000 square feet (2700 square meters), equivalent to the gardens of the previous buildings that were in place. Emblematically, the existing green of the vegetation rises vertically upward, brightening the building and offering a changing appearance during the different seasons. A large metal visor that sits atop the building protects the two higher levels.

Valdivia, a city that lies 500 miles (800 kilometers) south of Santiago, is surrounded by forests and has a beautiful river that runs through it. This site, for the Court of Appeals, is near the main square, close to the river’s waterfront. The project divides the site into three parallel areas.

Valdivia, unos 800 Km. al sur de Santiago de Chile, está rodeada de bosques y tiene un hermoso río que la cruza. El terreno para la Corte está cerca de la plaza principal y anexo al paseo costanero al río. El proyecto divide el terreno en tres áreas paralelas:

Firstly, there is a triangular elevated plaza that opens toward the river. Secondly, there is an inverted triangle that contains the three-story public hall. Its main entrance is on the eastern side, however due to the natural slope, it also has an entrance on the western side—one level lower and closer to the river. This hall is transparent, symbolically mirroring the values of the justice system.

Lastly, a strip of workspaces to the south of the building comprises the courtrooms and so on. This area has an independent entrance. According to the rules governing the sector of the “typical zone,” the building has roofs sloping with large eaves for rain. The building becomes narrower on its west façade, to assimilate its scale with the other buildings of the “typical zone’.”

C) Una franja de espacios de trabajo, al sur del edificio, con las Salas de Audiencia etc. Esta área tiene con acceso independiente. Siguiendo las normas que rigen el sector de la “Zona Típica”, el edificio tiene techos inclinados con grandes aleros para la lluvia. El edificio se angosta en su fachada poniente para asimilar su escala con otros edificios de la “Zona Típica” anexa.

The interior is dominated by wood. On the outside, coverings were used that require little conservation—granite and marble on the lower levels and glass further up.

En los interiores predomina la madera. En los exteriores se utilizaron revestimientos que requieren escasa conservación. Granito y mármol en los niveles inferiores y cristal más arriba.

The site of this holiday house is long and very steep. It descends quickly, from the north to the south. On its higher edge, it sits on a road that unites different seaside towns. From the higher section, it offers splendid views of the seaside resort and the bay. However, this tree-filled site had many problems. Because it falls to the south, and the Chilean sun passes to the north, it received very little sun. There was also a large house to the west, which occludes the views of the sea. Additionally, the regulations obligated that the construction be no higher than 24.6 feet (7.5 meters). These conditions meant that the house needed to be located as high on the site as possible, and as close to the upper road as possible. It also needed to be located to the east, in order to gain enough sun and a view of the sea. These requirements resulted in positioning the program on different volumes with these same objectives applied, while adapting to the height restriction.

El terreno de esta casa de vacaciones es largo y muy empinado. Cae de Norte a Sur, dando a un camino que une distintos balnearios en su límite superior. Arriba ofrece espléndidas vistas del balneario y de la bahía. Pero el arbolado sitio tenía varios problemas. Por caer hacia el sur recibía muy poco sol, ya que en Chile el sol pasa por el norte. También existía una gran casa al poniente, de la cual era necesario separarse para lograr visiones al mar. Además los reglamentos obligaban a construir bajo una rasante de 7,5 mts. Estas condiciones llevaron a ubicar la casa lo más alto y cerca posible de la Ruta superior y al lado oriente, en busca del sol y las vistas. También a descomponer el programa en volúmenes distintos con esos objetivos y para adaptarse a la rasante.

The floor plan of this house resembles a branch of pine or eucalyptus, whose stem would become an interior garden. This garden brightens the house and holds the ramps that unite the levels—for wheelchair access. It includes different programs, whose limits are barely noticeable, as the entrance hall and so on. La planta de la casa semeja una rama de pino o eucaliptus, cuyo tallo sería un bosquecillo interior. Este invernadero alegra la casa e incluye las rampas que unen los niveles y sirven para discapacitados. Incluye dentro diferentes programas, cuyos límites casi no se perciben, como el hall de recepción. El bosquecillo se calienta cenitalmente y por ventanales hacia el norte, generando un “efecto invernadero” que tempera la casa. Este sistema térmico pasivo ha funcionado bien, especialmente con el dormitorio principal (que es el que más se usa). »

Toward the slope, the house opens up explosively through its three “boats” or overlapping “leaves.” Given the perspective and the house’s green copper cladding, it appears to glide over the site, merging with the landscape. Furthermore, the use of the copper alludes to Chile’s main exportation. The ramps provide the house with a great variety of routes and views, and contribute to the land-retaining wall. The program was divided into three “leaves,” or levels, that rotate outwards.The main bedroom is on the upper level. On the intermediate level is the living and dining room, while further down are the children’s bedrooms. A guest bedroom is located at the other end of the house. As time passes, the exterior walls have become covered with creeping fig vines.

Según sea el punto de vista, vuela sobre su terreno o, debido a su revestimiento de cobre verde, se mimetiza con el paisaje. Además el uso del cobre alude a la principal producto de exportación chileno. Debido a sus rampas la vivienda ofrece una gran variedad de recorridos y visiones.
