SHALL WE EXPLORE THE WOODS?
This book is a great way to start! These pages present some animals that you can search for inside the puzzle, after discovering interesting facts about each one of them.
COME ON, LET’S START!

Did you know that there are several species of foxes? The most widespread and well-known is the one with reddish fur and a white tip on its bushy tail.

WOLF
It’s a majestic animal that lives in packs. Wolves communicate with each other through different types of howls.
SQUIRREL
This clever rodent hides its food in different places during the summer, in order to have the necessary supplies to face the long, cold winter!

It’s a nocturnal bird. During the day it rests, while at night it hunts. It can rotate its head enough to look over its shoulder. It’s hard to take it by surprise!
OWL

LYNX
This large feline, with its characteristic tufts of hair on the tips of its ears, has incredibly developed vision and hearing.
BADGER
Its den is underground, with long tunnels, many bedrooms, and even an emergency exit in case of danger!

LITTLE OWL

When it flies, it makes almost no noise!
Such a silent flight serves the purpose of allowing the little owl to take its prey by surprise.
BOAR
Every morning, it rolls in the mud. This way its body is protected from the sun and stays cool in the hottest months!

WOODPECKER
Using its very tough beak, this bird strikes the trunk of trees over and over again, to find larvae and insects to feed on and to make its nest inside the trunk!

SNAKE

When it feels in danger, it plays dead! It also releases a smelly liquid to fool predators.

BROWN BEAR
During winter, this large mammal hibernates. It sleeps deeply for months and then wakes up with the arrival of spring.
DORMOUSE
This rodent’s long tail is useful for balance and also for keeping the animal warm when it sleeps!

PORCUPINE

When it feels in danger, the porcupine rolls up into a “ball” bristling with spines, which discourage most predators!

BEAVER
With its large sharp teeth, it gnaws through branches and logs, which it then hauls into rivers to build dams and prepare its own lair.
FALLOW DEER
Can you see the spots on its fur? They allow you to distinguish the doe from another large herbivore that lives in the woods and is very similar to it: the deer.

HARE

To communicate with each other, especially in cases of danger, hares thump their hind legs forcefully on the ground.

SKUNK
WEASEL
This small carnivore is very agile. Along with being an infallible hunter, it is also a skilled swimmer and a fast climber. It has an extraordinary defense system. When it feels in danger, it squirts a smelly liquid.

SALAMANDER
The skin of this amphibian is shiny because it is covered in mucus, which defends the little animal from predators thanks to its repellent taste!

ROE
TOAD
How does this amphibian manage to obtain food? It catches its prey and brings it to its mouth using its long sticky tongue.
HEDGEHOG

At sunset, just before night arrives, these graceful herbivores move to the edge of the forest to graze on grass and tree buds. What does it eat? Mostly bugs, but it also favors small reptiles, berries, fruit, and acorns. The hedgehog is omnivorous.

HOOPOE
How do you recognize this beautiful migratory bird? It has a long curved beak and a crest of reddish feathers, black and white at the top!
MOOSE
Along with being a skilled swimmer, this large animal is a real athlete and can run very fast!

STAG BEETLE

Its name derives from its jaws, which look very much like antlers!

JAY

It is very good at imitating the songs and calls not only of other birds but also of other animals in the woods!
DEER
The large velvety antlers of this herbivore detach and fall off, only to grow back the following year.

GREEN LIZARD
The tip of its tail, if pulled, snaps off to allow the reptile to escape predators.
