INTRODUCTION As previously described, this book focuses on the execution and presentation of well-known everyday objects made of LEGO® bricks. In contrast to my previous books, it is not about showing models in miniature scale and creating worlds to go with them. Just the opposite: this time, it’s about playing with illusion, about deceptively real-looking models, preferably reconstructed true to scale. In part, I have used very old, rare elements, but I’ve also used parts that were brand new (at the time of this book’s publication) and a large variety of colors. In each case, I name exceptional pieces in the descriptions—including the part number, which always refers precisely to the part numbers on the BrickLink online platform, which has belonged to the LEGO® Group since 2019.

Many hobby designers probably know this already. Over time, they develop so-called “favorite” pieces, which are in constant use. With the models shown here, there are three pieces in particular that I have used quite often, two truly old and one fairly current:
The Technic Plate, 1 x 4 with Toothed Ends, item number 4263, is also available in other sizes that are excellent for all possible applications. Here, I am showing the smallest version.
A few years ago, the inverted tile was one of the pieces on my wish list. Since then, it has become available, as if someone heard my wish. Now, it is even available in a 1 x 3 version. The exact denomination: Tile, Modified 2 x 2 Inverted, item number 11203. And finally the small tube from the 2 x 4 Hinge Plate, item number 3149c01. There are a few ways to push the peg out of the joint. The best way is to make a little tool, such as an axle with a pin on a lift arm. Just stick it on and push out the peg. The Plate, Modified 2 x 2 x 2/3 with 2 Studs on Side (item number 99206), is used as a new SNOT element—that is, as an aid to turn construction around 180 degrees so the studs are not on top, for example in the Game Boy™ Color.

In case no one has noticed, the joystick and the power cable are also, naturally, made from LEGOÂŽ. Pneumatic hoses in various lengths are especially useful. With metallic additions, you can also join smaller pieces.

What would a game console be without a matching television? Say no more. Pac-Man chosen for the display, 4:3 aspect ratio calculated, built, enclosure as well, three days later: done.
Yes, you can also build a German test pattern from a previous era. It’s more difficult than a video game console. And right after, a North American test pattern. The TV also looks good turned off, but there’s just nothing to do.
