Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Framework Studio Framework Studio is an Amsterdam and Paris based interior design studio, with staff traveling regularly between the two locations. Having a place that feels like home, surrounded by like-minded people, is always a nice feeling when abroad. Studio Apartment B, located in the city center of Amsterdam, is the new family house of the studio. It not only was a brain wave of Framework to design an unconventional layout, but also to fulfill the need for a place to stay for employees from other countries for short or longer periods, surrounded by the products and art pieces that are inspirational for the studio’s designers. As the studio acknowledges the character of each project by fusing the driven forces of geography and local materials with the building history and its inhabitants’ desires, in this case they could design the family house of their dreams. Entering the house feels like stepping into an art gallery or and artist-in-residence, where all surrounding items have been picked with emotional feeling. Right behind the entrance door, the tiny corridor reveals a double split level. The kitchen, located below street level but flooded with natural light through the big windows, stands out for the use of aluminium and Milanese stone. The large black mirror cube clashes with the rough surrounding materials and textures, giving the space a sense of depth and spark without being too present because of its color. The corridor turns into stone staircases, leading to the bedrooms, the workroom and the living room, the most exciting space in the house. With the feeling of being in a tree house, the living room floats freely in the void, creating a direct connection with the kitchen, while standing on top of it. The organic shape of the couch in the living room, as well as the stube dining bench in the kitchen, with their soft colors and textiles, create warm places where the Framework family likes to hang out. The color scheme used is ton-sur-ton, with large surfaces of colors that absorb the light. The big green textured woven carpet and the large black cubical in the kitchen create a contrast with the quiet surfaces in the house. The rooms are filled with local design and art pieces, from vintage wall items by Nerone and Patuzzi to contemporary pieces by Jan Janssen Werken and Jordan Artisan. The workspace, facing the backyard, also functions as meeting room and brainstorm space for Framework Studio.

Found Associates Found Associates, as residential architect, designed this contextual country house consisting of a restored and updated gamekeeper’s cottage and an innovative series of fresh, inter-connected pavilions tucked into the landscape immediately behind it. Together, they form an inviting rural escape set within a secret valley on the edge of the Cotswolds, surrounded by woodland.
