We have a wonderful array of exhibition titles featuring contemporary art, photography, sculpture and two major new titles in our Library series: The National Library of Israel and The Morgan Library & Museum, New York. The phenomenal success of our Director’s Choice series continues, and we are thrilled to feature ten more institutions in this year’s catalogue from the UK, Greece, Italy, Russia and Poland, making a total of over 80 titles in this popular series. Our children’s list is augmented by an exquisitely illustrated classic of world literature, The Story of Babur, one of three projects with our partners in Uzbekistan, and we have two new titles in our series celebrating the architecture of buildings housing art and culture, Art Spaces. All these additions complement Scala’s rich list of titles on the collections, history and architecture of the world’s cultural institutions and I hope you enjoy them. In God’s Mirror: The Theyyams of Malabar Pepita Seth £45 / $60 Publication: December 2022 336 pages; hb 274 × 243 mm (9.6 × 10.8 in.) 978 1 78551 411 1 Pepita Seth first visited India in 1970. After several years she became drawn to Kerala and eventually based herself in Thrissur, where she now lives. She has written and lectured extensively on Kerala’s traditions and had exhibitions of her photographs in India, Britain and the United States. In 1981 she received official permission to enter Kerala’s temples, and she has been photographing Theyyam since the early 1990s. Her book Heaven on Earth: the Universe of Kerala’s Guruvayur Temple was published in 2009. In 2012 the Indian Government awarded her the Padma Shri. She has also published two novels, The Spirit Land (1994) and The Edge of Another World (2015).

Theyyam is a 2,000-year-old ritual of worship found only in the northern region of Kerala, India, in which empowered men temporarily manifest as deities. Once the face is transformed by intricate make-up and the body fantastically costumed, the deity’s complex ritual procedure begins. Pepita Seth’s decades-long association with Theyyam’s practitioners gave her unprecedented access to their culture. This book is the culmination, in her words and photographs, of her commitment to this extraordinary subject.

Most of Eurus Collection’s artifacts were collected by her late father, Dr Hahn Kwang-ho CBE, who was one of the key contributors to the establishment of the Korea Foundation Gallery at the British Museum. Director Hahn’s research interests are in the field of conservation studies and the history of cultural artifacts. Dr HaYoung Joo is an Assistant Professor of Art Theory and Criticism at the School of Arts, Chonnam National University, Korea. Eurus Collection, a sister institution of Hwajeong Museum in Seoul, is dedicated to researching antique fans and other historical artifacts from East and West. With more than one thousand fans from all over the world, it is the second largest collection of its kind in the world after The Fan Museum in London, and the largest in Asia.

A beautifully illustrated survey of eighteenth- and nineteenthcentury European fans in the French rococo and rococo revival styles. Sixty-six superb examples, selected from the Eurus Collection in South Korea, offer a glimpse into the life of European royalty and aristocracy, and demonstrate the intermingling of cultures which resulted from trade between Europe and the East. This book explores the fans’ thematic and stylistic aspects as well as their assembly and production and reveals their untold stories.

1-1 “VERNIS-MARTIN” LACQUERED IVORY BRISÉ FAN France, early 18th century Painted with a pastoral “Moment musicale” front and a landscape back, guards with incidental chinoiserie decoration, signed “L. Bayard”, 19 × 34.5 cm

This fan is made of ivory and painted with gouache. Its pastoral landscape artwork is quite striking. The fan is made solely of decorative sticks without a leaf, with the top part connected by a ribbon and the bottom part fixed with a pivot pin. This fan is finished with a “Vernis Martin” (“Martin varnish”) technique, which is similar to the lacquer technique popular in East Asia. In the seventeenth century, craft works made using the East Asian lacquer technique became available in Europe, and were much admired by Europeans due to their rarity. The Martin family in France developed their own variation of the technique (“Vernis Martin”, after their family name) in the eighteenth century. It was one of many techniques imitating East Asian lacquer during that period. The front of the fan illustrates a romantic scene of a man playing the flute and a woman listening to the music. Both are seated under a tree and are enjoying the idyllic surroundings. A beautiful landscape is depicted on the back. The fan’s guards and sticks are decorated with Chinese motifs. The name, “L. Bayard” is inscribed on the right side of the fan’s front.

The State Museum of Art of the Republic of Karakalpakstan named after I.V. Savitsky was founded in February 1966 by decree of the Government of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. The museum’s first director was lgor Vitalievich Savitsky (1915–1984) – an artist from Moscow who had a long connection with Karakalpakstan. Today, the museum is home to around one hundred thousand items spanning more than four thousand years, and according to experts it is the best art collection in Central Asia. The first in a series of books on the museum collections and cultural heritage of Uzbekistan, this title features examples of applied art and design and the best-known paintings by Alexander Volkov, Robert Falke, Mikhail Kurzin, Nikolay Karakhan and many others.

Nikolay Karakhan (1900–1970)

Laying the Water Pipes in Bukhara, early 1930s Oil on canvas

89.5 × 124.5 cm

Nikolay Karakhan was born in the Caucasus but lived in Central Asia all his life. All his creative work is connected with the region. Karakhan’s close association with A.N. Volkov, which began in the mid-1920s, had a profound influence on his development as an artist. From 1931 to 1932, Volkov gathered around him a group of young artists who became known as the ‘Volkov Brigade’. Nikolay Karakhan joined the group, together with Ural Tansykbaev, Alexey Podkovyrov and Pavel Shchegolev. The task of the group was to create a national style that would combine the traditions of Western and Eastern art. In the spirit of those creative times, regular ‘creative work trips’ were undertaken by the Brigade to capture the heroics of everyday life on canvases. The painting Laying the Water Pipes in Bukhara depicts one of the key construction events under socialism in Bukhara – the laying of a water pipeline. Water is extremely important in Central Asia. It is difficult to imagine this today, but back in the late 1920s, residents of Bukhara, a city of many thousands, got their drinking water from open reservoirs (khaus) located throughout the city, and this led to numerous infectious diseases among Bukharians. This explains why a seemingly mundane construction site became such a significant event. Karakhan has given the construction of the water pipeline an epic feel. The muscular, half-naked men look like Atlanteans who are not just carrying a pipe but appear as if they are holding up the vault of heaven. In the foreground, the man with his back to the viewer is drinking water, which conveys the essential significance of what is happening – clean water that can be drunk without fear is being made available. Karakhan depicts contemporary realities in the central plane, where we can see a marching unit of Pioneers and a traditional water tank (a khaus) with people standing on its steps. On the right, builders are restoring a medieval monument, showing their respect for the past. In the background, Karakhan has created an architectural fantasy out of silhouettes of the famous medieval monuments of Bukhara. Despite the painting’s small size, it gives the impression of being a monumental mural. 38

The Silk Road is one of the most remarkable achievements of civilisation. A transcontinental route, it meant that for the first time in human history the West and the East were connected: the Mediterranean countries with the Far East, the ancient classical civilisations with that of the Chinese. The emergence of this route can be traced back to the second half of the 2nd century BC when the Chinese envoy and traveller Zhang Qian first opened up the Western Regions (the Chinese name for the countries of Central Asia) for China. In this way, two great routes to previously unknown lands came to be connected. The first, ran from west to east, from the Mediterranean to Central Asia, and was scouted and traversed by the Hellenes and Macedonians during the campaigns of Alexander the Great and the Seleucid general Demodamas. The second, running from east to west, from the Han Empire to Central Asia, was the route taken by Zhang Qian as he crossed these regions, moving from north to south through Dayuan (Ferghana), Kangju (Transoxiana) and Bactria. The Sogdians had a prominent role in the development of the Silk Road as they moved eastwards to settle elsewhere following the conquest of Sogdia by Alexander the Great. Later, Sogdian trading stations appeared all along the eastern part of the route, stretching from Central Asia to Changan in China and, possibly even as far away as Japan. At the end of the 6th century BC, the Sogdian merchant Maniah, having skirted the Caspian and crossed the Black Sea, arrived in Constantinople, thereby establishing a new route for the silk trade – the ‘Caucasian Silk Road’. There is evidence that the Sogdians also traded along the maritime routes of the Silk Road, which went from Arabia to India and thence further east to China. The term ‘Silk Road’ – Seidenstrasse or Seidenstrassen (‘Silk Roads’, since there were many routes), in German – was first coined and introduced into academic circles by the German scholar Baron Ferdinand von Richthofen in 1877 in his seminal book on China. His choice of the name was entirely justified, for it was silk, as another German scholar Albert Hermann noted, which, at the end of the 2nd century BC, was the main commodity responsible for bringing together the two different worlds of the West and 189

Samarkand, a Treasure

Won and lost samarkand was my goal, but little did I know it would not be my last destination. When you win a war, it does not necessarily mean you have no enemies. In fact, it could well mean you have earned new enemies. Thus, victory over Samarkand was just the beginning of a series of battles in the days to come. I will tell you about it in detail as my story unfolds. For now, let me take you around Samarkand. 23

HENRY MOORE STUDIOS & GARDENS

HENRY MOORE

STUDIOS & GARDENS

HENRY MOORE STUDIOS & GARDENS Henry Moore is one of the most important and influential artists of the twentieth century. From 1940 until his death in 1986 Moore lived and worked in the small hamlet of Perry Green, Hertfordshire, where he acquired over 70 acres of land and set up various studios, creating the perfect place to make and show his art in nature. Although Moore’s work travelled across the globe, he understood that it was here at Perry Green that the most profound understanding of his work could be gained; and where he welcomed a diverse array of international visitors, including artists, film stars, politicians and royalty. Perry Green is now home to the Henry Moore Foundation, established by the artist in 1977 to support the visual arts, safeguard his legacy and preserve the unique experience of visiting his home and studios. This guide to the house, studios and gardens provides a fascinating insight into Moore’s life, working methods, the main themes in his sculpture and the vital importance of the surrounding landscape.

BACKLIST MUSEUM COLLECTIONS

This sumptuously illustrated book presents a selection of works from an extraordinary and passion-driven collection of Asian art. For more than two decades Francisco Capelo, inspired by the centuries-long connection between Portugal and Asia, has been collecting exquisite works in a range of media – from Japanese scroll and screen paintings to Chinese ceramics, and from Indian religious sculpture to Indonesian textiles and jewellery. Housed in an eighteenth-century palace in Lisbon, the Francisco Capelo Asia Collection now comprises 1,300 artworks from all over Asia and spans many centuries.

Selected works from the Francisco Capelo Asia Collection

In Traveller’s Eye, more than 200 objects from this unique collection are beautifully photographed and enriched by insightful accompanying texts. The book serves as a lavish and informative introduction to the arts of Asia, from Japan and Korea in the north to Sri Lanka and the isles of Indonesia in the south. The works of art are featured alongside articles by eminent art historians and scholars, enabling readers to share the excitement of their discoveries and to learn more about the abundance and breadth of Asia’s artistic traditions.

southeastern outpost by highlighting the unique relationship between art and its history. Art unfolds in a space where, regardless of their origin, artists contribute to a better understanding of European art, as their achievements are set against a broader art–historical spectrum, across the span of artistic schools and styles, extending over four hundred years of history. The Collection’s outstanding paintings and objets d’art date mostly from the sixteenth to the twentieth century and offer a glimpse of the high points of Western painting. They include a focus on Old Master paintings, Dutch still lifes, light-spirited Rococo pastorals, eighteenth-century Venetian views, the great masters of the impressionist movement and boldly coloured pointillist and fauve canvases. Through the Gold Collection, gold coins from antiquity to the present day unfold the monetary history as well as the history of the rulers and artists who created them. In addition, the visitor can trace the development of modern Greek art, as well as the first generation of Cypriot artists from the beginning of the twentieth century. These works also offer insights into the world of the man behind the Collections, the world of Anastasios G. Leventis – businessman, visionary, art collector and true ‘citizen of the world’.

by the Singapore River in the heart of the city since 2003. The museum traces its roots to the colonialperiod Raffles Library and Museum, founded in the middle of the nineteenth century. ACM’s satellite Peranakan Museum opened in 2008, and presents the art and culture of Southeast Asian mixed-heritage communities. ACM is a National Museum governed by Singapore’s National Heritage Board. Singapore’s history as a port city that brought people together from all over the world is used here as a means of examining the history of Asia. The objects presented here tell stories of the trade and the exchange of ideas that were the result of international commerce, as well as the flow of religions and faith through Asia. Director Kennie Ting has chosen his personal favourites from the collection, collaborating with ACM curators to provide readers with insightful descriptions of these masterpieces as well as a broad introduction to the museum.

THE SKIPPER’S WAR

Desmond Devitt has spent nearly 40 years at the Dragon School, Oxford, where his roles included Head of History, Housemaster and Registrar (in charge of Admissions). harles ‘Skipper’ Lynam, the celebrated headmaster at the Dragon School, Oxford, inspired a generation of pupils caught up in the First World War. This book tells the story of the school’s wartime years and the various fronts on which ‘Old Dragons’ were involved. Material from the School’s remarkable magazine, The Draconian, provides first-hand accounts of the conflict; it records the heady optimism of summer 1914 and the desolation of later years, when memories of school provided a powerful solace. Through letters, photographs, poems and obituaries, the characters of these young men are vividly portrayed. The Skipper’s War also reveals the trials of the home front, and the challenge of maintaining ordinary school life in the face of devastating loss. It admires the idiosyncratic ways of a school founded by Oxford dons for their children and traces Skipper Lynam’s extraordinary relationship with his boys – so many of whom (in former pupil John Betjeman’s words) ‘lost their lives for King and Country and the Dragon School’.

Banat is the place where Byzantium and Central Europe clashed giving birth to a unique and diverse geography, which has embraced the entire world, and which was also able to become the cradle of a fascinating history. From a social, economic and political point of view, the Banat region was a territory of experiments, social and liberal initiatives, humanistic aspirations and the desire of material striving. Sometimes, this place belonged to individuals and communities who refused to obey the authorities or totalitarian regimes. Indeed, the Banat region has its own particularities and invoking its historical realities is essential to future projects of the region.... It is possible, but also necessary to establish a history of the Banat region from the perspective of the Romanians, Serbians, Hungarians,Austrian-Germans and Europeans at the same time. There are many who would like to read about the history of the region, to discover new information, to discover the people, places and topics less known or unknown, to understand events and facts, to question and enquire about the relationship between past and present. Victor Neumann

The Villa Wolkonsky, Rome, is the incongruously named official residence of the British ambassador to Italy. Nestled within the city’s Aurelian Wall, the site’s history dates back to antiquity, its gardens dominated by the remains of a first-century imperial Roman aqueduct. In the nineteenth century a remarkable Russian princess, Zenaïde Wolkonsky, turned it into a country home and salon d’art with such illustrious visitors as Gogol, Turgenev and Walter Scott. Following generations excavated Roman tombs, collected antiquities and built a new grand mansion, before selling the Villa to the German government in 1922. It remained the German embassy, being much enlarged, until the Liberation of Rome in 1944. After the war the UK bought it, first as embassy offices and residence and, since 1971, as the residence for the ambassador and other staff. In this handsomely illustrated volume, Sir John Shepherd, former ambassador, has undertaken new research to debunk long-held myths and present, for the first time, a comprehensive history of this hidden Roman treasure.

d for children of all ages.

Beginning in the eighteenth century, this region (Banat) inhabited by Romanians, Serbs, Germans, Hungarians, Jews, Slovaks, Turks, and Armenians, developed a genuine transethnic East European civilization. As the great «turning plate» between Vienna and Constantinople, the Banat area redefined Europe itself as an intercrossing of multiple traditions, rather than a homogeneous cultural space. As Victor Neumann puts it, ”if not entirely a Mitteleuropa, [the Banat was] in any case a Kleineeuropa, synthesizing the civilizations of the East and West“.
