White Trash Uncut Christopher Makos; Preface by Andrew Crispo; Foreword by Peter Wise

W

ith the publication of his seminal 1977 book, White Trash, Christopher Makos burst on to the photography scene and made a name for himself as the first photographer to record the convergence of the “uptown” and “downtown” worlds, as Debbie Harry fondly remembers. While the first book was a throwaway, this version, produced some forty years later, is being presented as an extremely collectable art book, now recognised as a classic in the world of pop culture photo photography. Christopher Makos is a world-renowned photographer. He is best known for his work in portraiture, and has exhibited at galleries and museums worldwide. He was an apprentice with photographer Man Ray in Paris and collaborated with Andy Warhol. ISBN: 9780989170468 Glitterati Incorporated 304 x 203mm. 128pp., 100 col. April 2014, £32.50 Hardback

This raw, beautiful volume chronicled the punk scene as it came of age on the street of New York. Interspersed in the mix are portraits of boldface names, including Andy Warhol, Man Ray, Tennessee Williams, Halston, John Paul Getty III, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Grace Jones, Patti Smith, Richard Hell, Tom Verlaine, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Zandra Rhodes, Divine, Lance Loud, and Marilyn Chambers, among others.

I Used to be in Pictures An Untold Story of Hollywood Austin and Howard Mutti-Mewse; foreword by Dominick Fairbanks

I

Used to be in Pictures is a collection of unpublished correspondence between brothers Austin and Howard Mutti-Mewse and some of the most celebrated and iconic film stars from the silent and ‘golden’ era of film-making. The brothers’ foray into this glamorous world began with a simple fan letter to Lillian Gish, followed by another to Douglas Fairbanks Jnr. This gave rise to a wealth of letter writing. Yet, the most interesting part of this story is that these letters were written retrospectively; Austin and Howard’s unique relationships with these screen legends developed long after the height of their celebrity, a quarter of a century after the cameras had stopped rolling. ISBN: 9781851497539 ACC Editions 300 x 237mm. 304pp., 20 col., 380 b.&w. February 2014, £35.00 Hardback

During the ‘90s, the brothers were entertained by stars, including Bette Davis, Marlene Dietrich, James Stewart and Elizabeth Taylor who invited them into their homes in Hollywood, Palm Springs, Malibu, Glendale and Santa Barbara; to reminisce over afternoon tea. Accompanied by many intimate and candid photographs of screen icons both at the height of their stardom and in later years, this is a collection for anyone looking for an insider glimpse into arguably Hollywood’s finest hour.

A fascinating insight into the Golden Age of Hollywood, the public and private face of an industry rarely explored in such an intimate fashion.

Charlotte Perriand Complete Works. Volume 1. 1903-1940 Jacques Barsac

C

harlotte Perriand (1903-1999) is undoubtedly one of the most significant figures in 20thcentury interior design. Vintage pieces of her furniture designs fetch millions in auctions. Together with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret she created a number of classics, such as the chaise-longue LC4. From the 1930s, she sought not only to change design but to initiate social change; her main goal as a designer, was to develop affordable, functional, and appealing furniture for the masses.

ISBN: 9783858817464 Scheidegger & Spiess 305 x 230mm. 480pp., 240 col., 600 b.&w. April 2014, £100.00 Hardback

Each of the three lavishly illustrated volumes is completed by annotations, index, and bibliography. The initial volume looks at the years of collaboration with Le Corbusier and her role as a precursor in the use of tubular steel in interior design. It also documents her work in photography and her special interest in pre-fabricated residential architecture.

Perriand’s life and work has been widely acknowledged, but thus far there has never been a comprehensive monograph covering all aspects of her work. Charlotte Perriand: Complete Works Volume 1 is a valuable resource on this key figure of 20th-century interior design.

Cézanne set still life painting on a new course, one that completely altered its traditionally low position within the hierarchy of French academic painting. For Cézanne, still life became the means by which he processed his perception of things, in which he viewed shapes and objects as units that might “interpenetrate one another”.

ART

The abstractions, powerful compositions, and magical significance of Moroccan carpets fascinated artists such as Le Corbusier, Marcel Breuer and Sean Scully. Their straightforward graphic style and vibrant colours are evocative of Mark Rothko or Cy Twombly. This intriguing resemblance forms the basis of this publication, which presents a striking juxtaposition of Moroccan woven and knotted carpets and European and American twentieth-century art, using examples from the Adam Collection, one of the most significant private collections of Moroccan nomad carpets in the world. Text in English and German.

Since Roman times Praxiteles’ masterpiece has been known as the Lizard-Slayer. Yet collectors, scholars, and students have puzzled over the meaning of the young Apollo killing a lizard. What could Praxiteles have had in mind? What was its original context? Praxiteles: The Cleveland Apollo shows that the answers to these questions are implicit in the bronze sculpture acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art in 2004. Representing Apollo’s victory over the Python, the triumph of order over disorder, the Cleveland Apollo is most likely the only surviving original sculpture by Praxiteles, and the only life-size Greek bronze that can be securely attributed to a Greek sculptor by name. The author recounts the story of the acquisition and reveals the circumstances of its recovery: found on an East German estate where it had languished for decades in a ruined condition.

Bright Lights in the Dark Ages is a major new volume focused on Early Medieval personal ornament. It features over 100 magnificent objects. These splendid brooches, buckles, and pendants, created to advertise power and wealth in the barbarian kingdoms, were later interred with their owners to be used in the afterlife. The broad scope of the Thaw collection, spanning over a millennium, illustrates the continuity and evolution of fine metalworking traditions. It also reveals the profound influence of the classical world on the new political alliances formed during the Early Medieval period that united people from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Highlights of this volume, replete with sumptuous images, include stunning Sarmatian-period jewellery, rare examples of Hunnic and Gothic garnet cloisonné, and exceptional brooches from the Merovingian period as well as superb Early Byzantine gold belt fittings.

Nur Light in Art and Science in the Islamic World Sabiha Al Khemir

ISBN: 9788494185618 Ediciones El Viso 300 x 240mm. 304pp., 300 col. February 2014, £55.00 Hardback

Since the early 17th century, Europe and Persia have had a close association; Persia became the longed-for destination of many travellers, craftsmen, monks and knights. They travelled to Isfahan, the magnificent capital, to be received at court; they brought works of art and luxury goods with them in exchange for the finest silks and precious rugs to take back home. This book explores the creative and artistic links between Persia and Europe over four centuries. Focusing on work by seven contemporary artists from Tehran, it provides an insight into a new modern Persia and its place within the international art world. At the same time, the reader is offered a fresh view of ancient art shown in contrasting juxtaposition.

A masterpiece of Persian literature written in the twelfth century, The Canticle of the Birds is the poetic expression of a universal initiatory quest, for Love, Truth and Unity. The journey of the birds beyond the seven valleys to meet Simorgh, the legendary bird and allegory of the Supreme Being, symbolises the voyage of every human soul. For this edition, Dick Davis has translated the prologue and epilogue, and has also reworked several passages. More than two hundred Persian,Turkish, Afghan and Indo-Pakistani works, chosen from the most beautiful manuscripts of the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries - from the banks of the Bosporusto to those of the Ganges complement the poem.

Nur: Light in Art and Science in the Islamic World explores the use and significance of light in Islamic art and science, revealing how light is a unifying motif in Islamic civilisations across the globe. Taking its starting point from the Arabic word for light, both in its physical and metaphysical sense, Nur is divided into two principal sections. The first is devoted to art and includes manuscripts illuminated with gold and coloured pigments, lustre-ware ceramics, metal objects with gold and silver inlay, and objects made in precious and semi-precious stones. The second section focuses on the field of science, in particular equatorial sundials, astrolabes and anatomical instruments, which illustrate the influence of the Islamic world on scientific thought.

William Bouguereau (1825-1905) was a highly important and influential French academic painter, who taught a long succession of gifted students, primarily at the private Académie Julien in Paris. Originally published as part of the two-volume set, now available for the first time as a single volume, this edition includes a chapter entitled ‘William Bouguereau’s Nymph and Satyr’. It is a detailed discussion of the painting, one of his most significant works, and is written by Kara Lysandra Ross.

A new edition of this luxurious set in a slipcase, which showcases all of Bouguereau’s known paintings and includes a comprehensive biography; it includes a new chapter devoted to one of Bouguereau’s most remarkable works Nymph and Satyr and includes improved colour images throughout. The first edition, ISBN 9781851496129, sold out within a year of publication; this new edition has been published to satisfy overwhelming demand. “The books are beautifully produced, with colour illustrations throughout, sumptuous and of high quality” The Art Newspaper

Claude Monet spent the last 43 years of his long life at Giverny, creating the paintings and gardens for which he is now revered. From the standpoint of his garden this book considers the controlling intelligence behind both landscape and art, and the influences that shaped Monet’s life and vision. Using contemporary correspondence and plant catalogues, with over 140 illustrations including paintings, engravings and garden views from Monet’s lifetime and today’s magnificent recreation, this book provides a visual exploration of the gardens at Giverny where Monet celebrated his passion for painting and the plants that inspired him.

There is a real lack of published material on Paul Cézanne's still lifes; this groundbreaking new volume offers a complete, thematic reappraisal of Cézanne’s still life paintings, looking at them both within the broader context of his complex artistic and psychological development and within the wider history of the development of still life in France and early twentieth-century modernism. Presenting twenty-two key still lifes by Cézanne, this is a major contribution to our understanding of Cézanne’s life and work.

This volume is a fascinating exploration of the myths and iconography of the Greek god Poseidon and the cult objects offered to him in his numerous manifestations across the Mediterranean world. Using over 50 objects from Tampa Museum of Art’s internationally significant collections of ancient Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities, together with over 50 pieces from other collections, including The Getty Museum, this volume builds on Tampa’s own statue of Poseidon, dating from the 1st century AD, to explore the sea and the art it inspired in antiquity. Six essays by leading specialists examine the cult of Poseidon and the myths surrounding him, as well as the significance of the sea and seafaring in daily life. The volume also features a technical study of the Getty’s colossal bronze trident, dating from the 4th century BC and maps of trading routes.

Telling the fascinating story behind the pivotal role of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and its influence on so much of late seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth century European visual culture, Gods and Heroes features 208 extraordinary art works from the École’s collection. These include remarkable paintings by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Nicolas Poussin, Jacques-Louis David, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, and Antoine Watteau, as well as drawings by Leonardo and Raphael. A combination of great art, by leading French and European artists, plus texts by leading authors serve to make this a major publication, with lasting and broad appeal across a whole range of scholarly, academic, collecting, exhibition visiting and general art lovers’ markets.

This major work, first published in 1950, is still considered the classic work on the subject. The book was revised and enlarged by ACC in the year 2000; this is a reprint of that edition. It provides a comprehensive, critical and well illustrated survey of the portrayal of plants through more than three thousand years. Wilfrid Blunt, an artist himself, brought to it a craftsman’s appreciation and knowledge gained from experience, the extensive literature and visits to many galleries on the Continent. William T. Stearn gave him much help on botanical, biographical and bibliographical matters and contributed part of the text.

This publication represents a generalist overview of Australian Aboriginal culture with references provided to assist in developing a wider understanding of the subject. Its focus is the two-dimensional painted surface and the contemporary work of Aboriginal artists from remote Australia. The first section introduces the subject of collecting and gives an historical overview of the culture. The second section features individual profiles of 90 highly regarded Aboriginal artists, highlighting their backgrounds, approaches and exhibitions along with examples of their work. It serves as both an historical reference as well as a collector’s reference on Indigenous artists

Crossing China introduces the highly fascinating art scene in China at the dawn of the 21st century. The book is conceived as a journey through the five major cultural capitals of the rapidly changing People’s Republic of China: Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Each chapter introduces the major stakeholders in the interrelated fields of art, architecture and photography. The changes that have swept over this nation have generated an hitherto unheard of creative output that not only reflects the country’s cultural breakthrough, but also points towards a fascinating and extraordinary cultural scene with global influence. Text in English and German.

Khoan and Michael Sullivan began collecting modern Chinese painting in Sichuan in Western China in the 1940s and their collection developed over the course of more than half a century to include paintings by the principal artists of late 20th century China, as well as works by a new generation. Many of the works presented in this complete catalogue of their collection were given to Khoan and Michael Sullivan by the artists themselves, so that this is at once a work of scholarship and a record of many friendships. This edition has been revised and extended to incorporate new works collected since this book was first published in 2001, and an updated further reading section.

Hockney, Printmaker features over 150 works, from etchings executed at the Royal College of Art in the 1960s, to experiments with printed computer drawings some fifty years later, via portraits, pools, poetry, Xeroxes and investigations into multi-point perspective. Written by Richard Lloyd, head of prints at Christie’s, with contributions from Hockney's friends and associates, it explores the many achievements of Britain’s greatest living practitioner of the graphic arts.

The paintings of Ilse D’Hollander (Sint-Niklaas, 1968-1997) result from a personal search for the medium of painting. Via meticulous observation of her immediate environment, D’Hollander created compositions of coloured surfaces and lines, vibrating forms and transparent overpainting. Visual elements from the landscape, such as a branch, house, or road, are transformed into more abstract visual language that vacillates between the recognisable, suggestive, determined and more poetic. In only a brief period, between 1989 and 1997, Ilse D’Hollander created an extensive oeuvre of paintings and drawings.

Graphicstudio: Uncommon Practice at USF explores the incredible body of art from Graphicstudio, the print atelier at the University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida. Founded in 1968, the studio has developed an international reputation for creating unique works of art, and work produced at Graphicstudio can now be found in private and museum collections across the world. This volume presents over one hundred artworks by forty-five artists including Louise Bourgeois, Chuck Close, Roy Lichtenstein, Christian Marclay, Philip Pearlstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, and Kiki Smith.

William Beckman is one of the leading realist artists working in the United States, renowned for the emotional power of his figurative drawings. This new volume is the first major retrospective of Beckman’s work, featuring fifty significant drawings from both private and public collections, including the artist’s, a revealing interview with the artist, and an essay by author, poet and critic, Carter Ratcliff.

Through the paintings of these 18 artists, guided by the charismatic Pollock and referred to as “The Irascibles”, after a famous protest they staged against the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, this is a complete view of an essential artistic style that reinterpreted the canvas as a space for individual freedom of thought and action. It was both the style of the New York School and a unique phenomenon, which characterised post-war America and that with overwhelming force, influenced Modern Art across the world. This exhibition catalogue includes more than 49 masterpieces from the Whitney Museum in New York among which Pollock’s Number 27, Door to the River by Willem de Kooning (1960) and Untitled (Blue, Yellow, Green on Red) (1954) by Mark Rothko, alongside works by less wellknown artists.

Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) is one of the most significant and influential figures in modern and contemporary art, whose diverse practice has challenged conventions and captured the imagination of audiences around the world. This publication focuses on an outstanding collection of sculptures, works on paper and fabric works by the artist now on loan to the national ARTIST ROOMS collection and touring programme. Highlighting the artist’s late work, this collection will bring the work of Bourgeois to audiences across the UK. As well as the works now held with ARTIST ROOMS, the publication illustrates important sculptures and works on paper from Tate, The Easton Foundation and the Louise Bourgeois Trust, offering insights into the practice of this most distinguished artist.

Robert Motherwell is a monograph to this pioneering Abstract Expressionist, who enjoyed early recognition. At 29 years, he had his first solo show at Peggy Guggenheim’s legendary gallery (1944). A year later he moved to East Hampton, New York. None of the exhibitions dedicated to Motherwell have focused on this period and on the place where he came of age as an artist. He produced paintings, collages, and drawings that brought abstraction into the lingua franca of art created on the American side of the Atlantic. Published to accompany an exhibition in East Hampton during Autumn 2014, this catalogue explores how Motherwell used Surrealist techniques to make his abstractions and uncovers the influence of Picasso and Matisse on his early work.

Ethiopia is an amazing and mysterious country. People are moved by its rich nature, culture and history, which are linked both with the Western and Islamic worlds. Ethiopia is the home of coffee and khat, the place where the oldest human being in the world was found. Ethiopia: Footsteps in Dust and Gold is an amazing journey through an incredible landscape, beautifully illustrated with evocative text and illuminating photographs that fully capture its colourful diversity.

Having been instrumental in the creation and expansion of India’s National Parks, Bina Kak has now sought to reflect her love of wildlife and desire for conservation through photography. In this book her photographs document the behavioural patterns of tiger families in Ranthambhore, Rajasthan. Her images capture the beauty and unique characteristics of different tiger families, their social identities and habitats, a completely fascinating and beguiling collection that will undoubtedly raise awareness of the tiger’s plight and highlight the need for conservation if they are to continue to exist and thrive in the wild. India has an incredibly rich culture. In this volume, that culture is explored through the human senses of sight, smell, sound, touch and taste. The photographs in this book were compiled on the basis of an online competition. Photographers were invited to send in their entries according to the five themes; the response was enthusiastic and photographs flooded in. The best entries are part of this project.

The arrival of photography in India in 1840 began a rivalry between its practitioners and the painters of traditional miniatures and portraits. The novelty of this astonishing new medium soon attracted many court painters and patrons who themselves turned photographers, including the Maharajas of Jaipur, Tripura and Chamba. These early photographs captured Indian rulers and their families in a variety of poses, which nevertheless reflected the formality and constraints of court life. This remarkable and beautifully presented historical work sheds new light on the relationship between photographers, painters and their patrons in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Torso is an amazing collection of work spanning 16 years, documenting the burgeoning tattoo phenomenon across the United States and Pacific Islands. These photographs are slick and darkly addictive, reflecting artistic expression that links to both personal and social identity, the telling of stories on the skin, of being and belonging. Included are stunning examples of work by respected tattoo artists such as Mike Rubendall, Jill Bonny, Khalil Rintye, John The Dutchman, Horiyoshi III, Carlos Torres, Matt Breckerich, Clark North, Aaron Coleman, Horitaka, Steve Looney, Ron Earhart, Nate Bunuelos, Edwin Shaffer, George Campisi and Denny Besnard.

In Pride and Glory, photographer Horst A. Friedrichs concentrates on an extraordinary design classic: the leather motorcycle jacket, which developed in the 1950s from being merely functional outerwear to become the symbol of the era’s youth revolt. Since then, the myth has continued to flourish; to this day, leather jackets are one of the few items of clothing with true cult status. For decades, Lewis Leathers, the legendary British manufacturer of leather motorcycle jackets, has brought together exceptional examples for their unique collection of vintage leather jackets. This book makes these available to the public for the first time and provide insight into this highly exceptional lifestyle. Think of the movies, think of any photographic image of the New York skyline and there will undoubtedly be water towers; features that are as much a recognisable part of the city as the taxi cabs and the street signs. Ronnie Farley has documented these New York monoliths for over 20 years from every angle and time of day; a beautifully photographed and original collection. Ronnie Farley is a photographer who has lived in New York City for over 20 years. During that time, she has worked at Associated Press as a photo librarian and national photo editor, and as an independent freelancer. Her photographs have been published in Rolling Stone, USA Today, The Village Voice and the New York Daily News; she has been exhibited throughout the United States.

The love affair between music and photography dates back many years and pop and rock artists have always used top photographers to put a face on their music; despite the music industry’s many troubles over the past two decades, the link between sound and image is stronger than ever. You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet displays a range of work from some highly individual and original photographers: intimate behind-thescenes views of the music world, eccentric group portraits and iconic album cover material. Text in English and Dutch. This is the first book ever to be published with it’s own, free, online Spotify soundtrack: http://www.lannoo.be/yasny

Upon relocating to Beijing, photographer Lukas Birk attempts to escape the sense of stagnation that plagued him in his central European home. He encounters a group of like-minded young creatives who share his sentiment. Hoping to express that feeling, Birk discovers his father’s collection of expired Polaroid film. With Birk’s medium acting as a metaphor for the transformation of modern China, this book presents a collision of old and new world visions. In her insightful foreword, art advisor Katherine Don details Birk’s contribution to contemporary art in China and comments on his pioneering innovation. Birk’s stunning collection of inventive imagery captures the vibrancy of contemporary life, inspired by the filter of his own nostalgia and longing. Jitu is a wonderful collection of timeless photography James Stephenson’s twenty year spiritual journey through Africa, exploring the heart of this incredible land. His words and images take the reader into the world of shamanism, of storytelling, mythology and magic as he travels with Jitu, a local witch doctor and fisherman; his journey uncovers the folklore of the ocean and ends at the sacred mountain Nundulungu, where he and the Hadzabe Bushmen initially encountered the sacred text, that became the foundation for his writing. This is travel writing with heart and soul; conveying a deep respect for indigenous cultures and traditions accompanied by some powerful and emotive images.

As the traditional fairground, or Midway, disappears from the American landscape, this volume of gritty and surreal images become a document of its declining history; full of beautiful images that convey the real atmosphere of these ‘disappearing’ spaces, capturing the spirit and essence of the ‘thrill’ of the lights at night, ferris wheels and sideshow stalls that feel like the most magical of childhood dreams, full of the promise of excitement and escape.

Luca Blast Forlani leads the reader through a range of urban spaces, places that, notwithstanding passing of time, have still retained their own identity. Although on the surface apparently empty and desolate, they each have a history and a story to tell; the details of identity caught in the lens, the clues of a life discarded but not entirely forgotten. These images are poignant, emotive and thought-provoking; the use of light and shadows, close-up details and wide-angle shots, footprints of the past and the almost silence of present. Text in English and Italian.

ME, WE was the full text of the improvised poem that Muhammad Ali delivered to a crowd of Harvard students in 1975. It can be interpreted as a cheerful tribute to life, expressing unity and at the same time individuality. Dutch photographer Koos Breukel (1962) chose it as the title for this book that assembles portraits from the first 30 years of his career, focusing on the circle of life: be born, grow up, develop and express yourself, love, suffer, and die. Koos Breukel is a portraitist of farmers and artists, newborn babies and politicians, the sick and the old. ME WE, with a poignant contribution by the prize-winning author Erwin Mortier, is Breukel’s mid-career retrospective as well as his homage to life.

Every year, there is a huge party in San Luis, Argentina. Thousands of Brazilians are invited to the city to organise a show for the ‘Carnaval de Rio’. To photograph it, Pieter Henket was contacted, one of the ‘hottest’ photographers of the moment. The beautiful photography from Pieter Henket allows the reader to join the party and shows the people behind the show. Combined with the impressive Argentinean landscapes, this book is a unique and beautiful document. Text in English, Spanish and Dutch.

Dog grooming is all about the visual pleasure that stems from creating balance, symmetry, and freedom of movement. In Groomed one has the rare opportunity to admire the glorified result of this living art form. Paul Nathan became enamored with the idea of capturing the most manicured and primped Poodles, Cockerspaniels, Bichon Frise’s, Bedlington Terriers and more. His portraits showcase beauty for beauty’s sake, even in some of the more extreme photographs documenting the ‘creative’ category where the dog’s hair or fur is manipulated into shapes or scenes and dyed different colours.

This book is all about the favelas or slums of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil where a fifth of Rio’s six million inhabitants live in favelas: self-built, improvised and populous neighbourhoods in which life can be rough. With the World Cup coming to Rio in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016, the city is determined to show itself to its best advantage. The government is using the opportunity to clean up the slums and flush out the drug gangs. Frederik Buyckx rented a pied-à-terre for a few months in a favela and shared the inhabitants’ daily lives. Jesus, Make-up and Football is the photographic result of those months.

PHOTOGRAPHY

New York/Los Angeles is an exciting collection of new images of America’s two most interesting cities taken over some 40 years, captured in black and white and colour photography; as seen through the eye of photographer, art director and award-winning designer Lloyd Ziff. Lloyd Ziff is a well-respected and prolific photographer. He has been published in many of the world’s most prestigious magazines including The New York Times Magazine, Condé Nast Traveler, Interview, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, and Wired.

North and South, the Brothers War is an essay in photographs from the acclaimed Americana photographer Kristoffersen. This 128 page volume is a pictorial story of the American Civil War seen through the eyes of Kristoffersen and recreated by a huge cast of Civil War reenactors. They say that every picture tells a story, and in this case it’s true; this is an exciting visual ‘thrill’ ride through the marching, marshalling, drilling, acrid smoke-filled battlefields, line upon line of muskets afire, the aftermath, and the haunting ghost-like figures. All of it is movingly captured here, in this tribute to America’s ‘War of Brothers’.

Within the Arctic Circle, north of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia - known as the Barentsregion - is one of Europe’s last remaining wildernesses. Dutch photographer Jeroen Toirkens and writer Petra Sjouwerman went looking for stories in this region, comparing their own adventures with the historical diary of Gerrit de Veer, one of the crew on Dutch navigator Willem Barents’ third voyage in search of the Northeast passage, during the sixteenth century. Text in English and Dutch.

In deepest Southern Thailand is the rarely visited province of Narathiwat, home of ongoing conflict between Thailand and Muslim separatists. Once part of the Islamic Sultanate, this area was only integrated into Siam following the Anglo-Siam treaty of 1909. On a photographic expedition for a magazine article, locals led the acclaimed Spanish photographer Xavier Comas to a huge rambling structure that had once been, he was told, the magnificent palace of Tengu Shamsuddin the Raja of Legeh. Now inhabited by a shaman and local characters including an archaeologist, research student and a collector, the magical lost Palace of the Rajah of Legeh slowly revealed herself and seemed to encapsulate the shadows, splendour and desolation of this historic but conflicted region.

364,501 times a day, somewhere in the world, a new life begins and with it a new story. Birth Day is the round-the-world journey of a mother, photographer and journalist searching for these stories. In each location Lieve Blancquaert stepped into the maternity ward and literally, into the life of the newborn baby and its family. She also talked with family members, visiting their homes, taking part in festivals and rituals, travelling to special places and events that told her more about the culture in which the child would grow up. She worked for two years on the project, visiting 14 locations around the world; experiencing and documenting an economic mix of communities, different religions and cultures.

Filip Naudts (1968) began his career working for the Belgian national television and press in 1992. The following year, he was employed by the Antwerp Fotomuseum, where he remained until 2002. In 1993 he founded his own photo studio Guarda La Fotografia, where he quickly developed his own poetic style, often referring to the portrait paintings of the Flemish primitives. Filip Naudts is probably one of the most compelling, thought-provoking photographing artists of his country and generation. Fascinated by portraying beauty and at the same time, by adding a small humorous often surreal element to the image, showing the relativity of beauty.

Michael Reinhardt worked for nearly four decades as a well-respected fashion photographer in Paris and New York. While travelling the globe, he used his camera to find a different focus, taking personal pictures of ‘life’ observed along the way. Over the years he has created a unique photographic record of the diversity of social culture, happening as he saw it. He calls it ‘streetphotography’. These images have nothing to do with his work as a fashion photographer; they tell a different narrative, a story of life at street level. Reserving judgement and forming no personal opinion, Reinhardt has captured fragments of time that attracted his attention, that moved him to visually record his impressions. Since its early days, photography has been both a tool of and subject for scientific research. ETHBibliothek, the main library at ETH Zurich, is holding in its Image Archive vast collections of photographs. Among them is the complete collection of the university’s own Photographic Institute. This new book documents both the main aspects of scientific photography, illustrating the research of many disciplines while being the subject of basic research itself. Using a rich selection of images, ranging from astronomical and micro-photography, to laboratory situations and carefully illuminated experimental installations. Text in English and German.

Painters and graffiti artists from all over the world used the grey concrete of the Berlin Wall, that stretched for miles and divided a city, as a canvas to visually record their impressions of the underlying political and social culture it represented; thus the Wall became iconic, representing the voice of a generation in the 1980s. ISBN: 9789401413961 Lannoo Publishers 240 x 155mm. 432pp., 100 col. January 2014, £18.50 Hardback

Cold Case Kennedy is the first book to systematically scrutinise all aspects of the murder dossier. Why did Robert Kennedy remain silent? Was there really a magic bullet? What was the role of Lyndon Johnson in the drama? Was there more than one sniper? Why did the Warren Commission refuse to consider a third victim on Dealey Plaza? What was a convicted gangster doing in the building directly across from the Texas School Book Depository? And, last but not least: was the official investigation the most in-depth inquest ever to be carried out, or was it nothing more than a clumsy attempt to sweep things under the carpet? Take a front row seat in the investigation to discover what really happened in Dallas just after midday on November 22, 1963.

White Trash Uncut Christopher Makos; Preface by Andrew Crispo; Foreword by Peter Wise

With the publication of with his seminal 1977 book, White Trash, Christopher Makos burst on to the photography scene and made a name for himself as the first photographer to record the convergence of the “uptown” and “downtown” worlds, as Debbie Harry fondly remembers. The book chronicled the punk scene as it came of age on the streets of New York.

I Used to be in Pictures

I Used to be in Pictures is a collection of unpublished correspondence between English born brothers, Austin and Howard Mutti-Mewse and some of the most celebrated and iconic film stars from the silent and ‘golden’ era of filmmaking.

An Untold Story of Hollywood Austin and Howard Mutti-Mewse; foreword by Dominick Fairbanks

ISBN: 9781851497539 ACC Editions 300 x 237mm. 304pp., 20 col., 380 b.&w. February 2014, £35.00 Hardback

The brothers’ foray into this glamorous world began with a simple fan letter to Lillian Gish, followed by another to Douglas Fairbanks Jnr. This gave rise to a wealth of letter writing. Yet, the most interesting part of this story is that these letters were written retrospectively, as raised on a diet of black and white movies, Austin and Howard’s unique relationships with these screen legends developed long after the height of their celebrity, a quarter of a century after the cameras had stopped rolling, at a time when they were able to reflect back on lives lived in the spotlight.

BIOGRAPHY & MUSIC

My Father, Our Fraternity is an intensely personal memoir which brings alive the rich classical music tradition from the early twentieth century to the present. Amjad Ali Khan offers an insider’s view of this era, through the life and times of his father, the famous sarod icon, Ustad Haafiz Ali Khan. He also affords us a glimpse into the deeply held traditions of Indian classical music, like the guru-shishya parampara, and the unique ways in which taleem (training) is imparted. As Amjad Ali Khan grows from a child prodigy to an accomplished musician, he expresses an acute sense of responsibility towards his guru and his family’s musical legacy, passed on from ancestors who created the sarod. The personal and the professional are intertwined in this book as they are in the author’s life. His friendships, relationships, and the milieu in which he has lived and performed, make for a delightful read for anyone who is interested in the classical music and musicians of India.

While most teenagers daydreamed of summer break while playing rock ‘n’ roll in their bedrooms, fourteen-year-old Paul Zone danced away his youth in underground clubs with those very same rock stars, exploring the concrete playground with actors, drag queens, and drug addicts. The mid-1970s was a time when the death of glam and the birth of punk rock collided in a celebration of glitter and grunge, and Zone had a front-row seat to it all. In this incredible photo memoir, Zone shares personal images that have never been released to the public alongside memories of the era, all through the eyes of a youngster whose reverential regard to his subjects made him a regular fixture in the lives of these greats. Zone captures the joys and the fantasy of the New York underground with a genuine intimacy, making this volume a worthy tribute to the legends of underground rock royalty.

The Willisau Jazz Festival has taken place every year since 1966 and has become an eagerly anticipated event within the international jazz scene, attracting jazz musicians and enthusiasts from all over Europe. Over the years more than 3000 musicians have performed there, including Evan Parker, Keith Jarrett, Ornette Coleman, Chick Corea, Cecil Taylor, Betty Carter, Archie Shepp, Dollar Brand, Don Cherry, Anthony Braxton, John Abercrombie, Horace Silver, Sun Ra, McCoy Tyner, Michel Petruccianni and John Zorn; the festival has become the epitome of dedicated atmospheric jazz concerts. Text in English and German.

Fashion Illustration A Manual Willemina Hoenderken (ed.), Anna Zika, Annette Görtz

ISBN: 9783897903951 Arnoldsche Art Publishers 310 x 230mm. 320pp., 400 col. January 2014, £35.00 Hardback

Fashion is fascination, cult, protection and adornment. We experience it daily on our own bodies and we notice it in our surroundings. The manifestations of fashion in magazines, advertisements and the Internet are never ending: sophisticated, erotic, provocative or overly aesthetic pictures create specific images, carrying the beholder off into their own world. To inspire such an eye-catching sensation requires a concept, an idea, which takes shape in an illustration. In the fast-moving age of digital photography, this art is disappearing from the everyday life of the fashion designer and media. In doing so it affords illustration great additional value: it bears witness to individuality, it conveys the zeitgeist and mood. Text in English and German.

They have completed their studies at Parsons The New School for Design in New York, Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Central Saint Martins College in London or the Vantan Design Institute in Tokyo; they are the fashion designers of the future. In this collection, Patrice Farameh presents thirty-eight international designers whose creations are displayed in stunning images. Their designs are exciting and reflect a time and society in which anything seems possible. Cool and classical, richly ornamented and elfish, sophisticated and body-concious, the models file past in clothes that straddle the line between experimental and wearable. Succinct biographies, quotes and short interviews reveal the ideas behind the remarkable creations pictured. Text in English and German.

Lingerie is the stuff of fantasy. This book is an exploration into the elements required to turn a piece of fragile fabric into an erotic design. Understanding how a designer moves from material to a creation that is a seductive work of art is almost impossible to define; this is fashion at its most intimate and sensual best… designed to heighten the senses and play with the imagination. The designers in this book, some of the best lingerie artists in the world, are incredibly skilled at translating a sense of inner desire into an external expression in satin and silk, combining luxury and longing, strength and vulnerability.

Michael McCollom has put together a collection of never-before-seen photographs of the individual. The Way We Wore is not only an historical piece that journeys through the African-American landscape, but also an album celebrating the individual. Michael McCollom has carefully chosen photographs and people that exhibit the historical framework of AfricanAmerican influence on fashion, design, and culture, taking a unique look back at AfricanAmerican style moments. Utilising personal photographs, this collection explores the stylish beginnings of a diverse group of African-American tastemakers along with everyday folk, examining a time when some individuals literally pulled it all together; or, for others, a time of trial and error. This is an exploration of African-American influence on fashion, design and culture.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Queen Sirikit of Thailand was often voted as one of the most beautiful and best-dressed women in the world. Through her Support Foundation she has helped restore the Thai silk industry to its rightful place in Thailand’s commercial success, and has provided employment and a new future to over 100,000 rural women. During her early trips to the USA and Europe the queen wished to showcase the beauty of Thai silk and commissioned the French couturier, Pierre Balmain to create outfits in both Western and Thai styles, the latter being inspired by historic models. These exquisite costumes are now housed in the magnificent Queen Sirikit Textile Museum in Bangkok, in the grounds of the Grand Palace. This book features all of these costumes and more, as well as a fascinating section of historical photography, an historical account of Thai costume and Thai silk brocade.

Dries Van Noten is an icon of Antwerp Fashion. Being part of the Antwerp 6, he became prominent in the international fashion world by the end of the eighties. Described by the NY Times as “one of fashion’s most cerebral designers”, he won the International Award of the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2008. This volume shows the range and diversity of his collections to date, revealing his sources of inspiration, using a range of creative mediums (paintings, fashion, photography, music, personal photographs) to illustrate this and really get inside the mind of the fashion designer, from concept to construction.

DECORATIVE ARTS & COLLECTABLES

A wonderfully informative guide to Russian decorative arts and their historical provenances, covering a wide range of crafts including Fabergé, jewellery, woodwork, hardstone, ivory, glass and porcelain, as well as imperial awards. Each topic is covered in an illustrated chapter introducing the techniques, its specific Russian characteristics and an overview of the principle makers. Russian Decorative Arts is ideal for new and would-be collectors in this field.

An unsung heroine of Art Deco art and architecture, Hildreth Meière is the artist behind many of the most spectacular mural installations of the mid-20th century. Meière is particularly known for her personal interpretation of Art Deco, which incorporates Byzantine, classical Greek, and Native American influences. This first monograph on the artist, featuring stunning, large-scale colour photographs, examines her distinctive Art Deco designs within the context of American art and architecture in the first half of the 20th century.

This monograph presents the complete history of the oldest Thuringian porcelain manufacturer, which is still in operation. With regard to the 18th century, the book provides a virtually complete coverage of figural porcelain and a selection of crockery. In relation to the 19th century, it elucidates the manufacturer’s previously unexplained ownership situation and its frequently changing names. This is followed by an overview of the modellers and models, as well as of the subsidiaries established in the 20th century. The publication concludes with contemporary artists’ designs for porcelain manufacturing in the 21st century. Text in German.

Heinz Siery was one of the most important personalities in the field of ceramics design in the 1950s and 1960s. Ingrid Siery also began her artistic career in the ceramics industry. Since 1969, the artist couple have been working independently in their own atelier. Apart from commissioned work such as designing tiled stoves and ceramic wall decorations, they also create their own works, such as figural sculptures made of bronze, whose simplicity and elegance have fascinated the couple from the beginning. Their atelier near Euskirchen, which houses a sculpture park and more than 300 of the couple’s works, is in itself a work of art; reflecting the artistic life of Ingrid and Heinz Siery. Text in English and German.

Written by a recognised authority on the subject, Arts and Crafts Furniture examines the furniture produced by the movement’s protagonists: the Guilds, the Cotswold School, the Glasgow designers, Heal, and Liberty. Starting with the seminal office of G.E. Street and ending with the effects on Ambrose Heal and Gordon Russell, the reader is taken on a colourful journey from the origins of the Movement, through its heyday, to its culmination. Indeed, it is a tour that explains how the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement became an enduring part of modern design. Many illustrations have been added to this new edition, some of them showing rare pieces of special interest.

María Campos Carlés de Peña, a leading expert in furniture history, has undertaken an exhaustive project of research into the large and varied production of furniture made in Peru in the 17th and 18th centuries - the colonial period - for churches, convents, monasteries and private collections. Over eleven chapters she provides a thorough description of this type of furniture, which was inspired by artistic styles ranging from Mannerism to Neoclassicism, with their many variants and creators. Arranged chronologically, the material in this book is an invaluable reference source, covering an area that has so far been little explored.

DECORATIVE ARTS & COLLECTABLES

An authoritative reference on Seguso Vetri D’Arte, this stunning volume includes a list of all models, splendid colour photographs and many historic illustrations; it’s truly a musthave for all connoisseurs of Murano glass. Marc Heiremans has devoted years of hard work at various Murano sites, tracking down almost all the Seguso archive material, resulting in an incredible treasure trove which he has been evaluating, working up and subjecting to meticulous scholarly treatment. The fruits of his labours are presented in this book, which is essentially a catalogue of works.

This three-volume collection examines the evolution of the sealed bottle from the 1640s to the late 1800s and provides a detailed description to accompany each entry, supported by numerous photographs, including the number of examples known, their condition, and the collections where the bottles and detached seals are held. Antique Sealed Bottles is a volume that unlocks history through the identification of its unique seals, using crests and coats of arms as the ‘keys’ to identifying the original owner.

Illustrating a 50 year history of some of London’s most iconic stores; their unique formula for commercial success was unique and innovative. Car Posters Emmanuel Lopez

The artworks in Car Posters show the history of the car from its creation up until the start of the 1970s. The posters have been chosen for their importance, rarity, beauty and innovation, as well as for what they represent in terms of significant historical, technical and artistic stages of the motor car. They showcase the work of the designers and illustrators who constantly strove to come up with new ideas and styles to match the technological progress of famous names such as Peugeot, Mercedes Daimler, Renault, Citröen, Bugatti, Buick, Fiat, Rolls Royce and Chrysler, as well as others that are less well-known nowadays. As the cars developed, so the daredevil drivers and entrepreneurs found increasingly daring exploits with which to show off their prowess and endurance. Emmanuel Lopez charts the history of car racing from early competitions such as the ParisRouen in 1894, which saw steam-driven carriages going head-to-head with petrol engines over a 126 km course, through the start of international races and on to the Grand Prix, the rise of circuits such as the Nürburgring and the legendary Le Mans 24-hour Race. Not to be forgotten are the innovations that enabled cars to become better and better: Michelin’s pneumatic tyres, Gentilhomme’s car horns, brakes by Boyriven and Triplex windscreens. Alongside these, developments in petrol and engine oil were equally important in making the motor car both a must-have for travel and an enthralling spectacle when racing. It was not just the cars that changed during this time; the illustrative styles did too. The work of artists such as Berhard, de Valério, Cappiello, Cassandre, Chéret, Ernst, Falucci, Gaudy, Grün, Hohlwein, McKnight Kauffer, Pal, Privat-Livemont and Rochegrosse shows the important variety of styles used by illustrators in this era and brings the wonderful cars and races to life in vivid colour.

Enid Marx Design Ruth Artmonsky and Brian Webb

Enid Marx: Design is a completely new collection of the printed and woven textile design patterns of Enid Marx (1902-1998), encompassing examples of her work for the London Underground, Royal Mail and Chatto & Windus Publishers; extraordinarily versatile and prolific, she became uniquely defined as a pattern maker, using textiles, paper and plastic in a way that was completely original, and while centred in the times that she was living and working, her designs enjoyed an amazing longevity of mass appeal. She was equally at home wood engraving or drawing for print making, end papers, book jackets, book illustrations and for stamp design. Outside her own design activities her major interest lay with popular or folk art. Together with her companion, Margaret Lambert, she wrote articles and books on the subject and amassed a considerable collection of artefacts, which are now lodged at Compton Verney, Warwickshire. When asked in old age if there was anything she wished she had done, she replied that she would liked to have instigated a Folk Art Museum; taking into account the wealth of work that she produced over her life that very much reflected and found fame in the commonplace, among the ordinary and the everyday, it would seem that she may have achieved that ambition, almost without trying.

Grunge Textures Volume 1 Vincenzo Sguera

Grunge Textures Volume 1 offers a wide array of graphics inspired by the realist, casual feel of the 1990s grunge scene. Grunge ran against the grain of the flashy aesthetic that existed in the 1980s, bringing with it irregularity and imperfections that identified its perpetrators as highly original. The graphics offered in this book capture this aesthetic and are ideal for adding an ‘indie’ feel to any given project.

The various artistic movements that followed Impressionism gave rise to the creation of new landscapes and designs, revolutionising traditional style and perspective. During the 1950s the sculptures of Calder, further developed the abstract idea of time and movement and came to represent what is now defined as Kinetic Art; art that expresses movement and fluidity. This volume is a colourful collection of graphic styles derived from Kinetic Art; translating these into designs that can be used in fashion, furniture and interior design. These are unique and original designs, that are unrestrained, that transform creative ideas into repeating patterns, to be developed and used in everyday products. Includes a free DVD containing 120 designs, saved in five formats, 600 files in total, all free to use with no royalties.

DESIGN

Advertising specialists, architects, artists, designers, fashion designers and photographers all need one thing for their work: inspiration, stimulation and ideas that incite their curiosity, inflame their passion, and lead their experimentation in new directions. Seeking this, many make their way westwards to America, to New York. Go West! Presents outstanding works by sixty of these creative pioneers. In skilfully moderated interviews, the editor Patrice Farameh sheds light on their working methods, their motives, and the influence that the imaginative Americas, brimming with ideas in this creative scene, have worldwide on culture and industry. Text in English and German.

The colours and shapes of Paola Navone’s world are daring, they’re colourful, they respond to many and various currents, and they’re never boring. She’s an architect of exteriors and interiors, a designer, curator, art director, and events organizer: crossing borders is what Paola Navone’s life is all about. This richly-illustrated book about Paola Navone shows impressively how her living and shopping landscapes are transformed into magical locations. It documents the vitality and originality of her exhibition projects, and presents the range of her designs for furniture, lighting, accessories, right down to her latest work for Reichenbach porcelain.

This is a complete overview of the works of Henry van de Velde (1863-1957) who, along with Victor Horta and Paul Hankar, can be considered as one of the main founders and representatives of Art Nouveau in Belgium. Trained initially as a painter, he then developed as an architect, interior designer, designer and art advisor. He created a highly impressive oeuvre; with his furniture, silverware, porcelain, jewellery, book design and other creations, always managing to combine both practicality with unique style and elegance. This collection highlights the diversity of his work and is a reflection of his originality and talent in crossing the boundaries between a range of different art forms. For as long as he can remember, designer Stan Van Steendam has been interested in lettering on street façades. Street typography rarely gets a lot of attention and old lettering usually disappears when new developments take place. It is, however, of significant value, telling a unique and captivating story. Stan Van Steendam has managed to capture this story in a series of 80 photos. See Brussels through his eyes and discover hidden gems you might otherwise have passed by without a glance. The photo aesthetics and the careful design are what make this book an ode to typography and a declaration of love to the city of Brussels.

The projects are divided into four climate zones: Arid & Semi-arid, Temperate, Arctic and Sub-tropical & Tropical, and each illustrates how architects adapt their designs to accommodate the challenges posed by the local topography and variations in climate. Containing cutting-edge residential designs by leading architects from across the world, and featuring rarely-seen images, this collection underlines the sensitivity of today's architects to the natural environment, and the influence this has on interior design and everyday living.

Sustainable architecture is one of the most popular trends today. With dense urban living and less green space available, green walls and roofs are helping to fill that gap. These living structures can be created with vegetation, which helps to absorb rainwater, provide insulation, and lower temperatures while creating a habitat for natural flora and fauna. Green Walls Green Roofs features projects from all over the world, showing how these elements work in various climates. Ranging from the tropical houses in Singapore to inner-city buildings in North America, this richly illustrated book will show you how living architecture can enrich our world.

The poolhouses, carports, garages, ateliers, outside offices and guest rooms in Wooden Dreams are, although classically built, very modern. They are quite literally, ‘wooden dreams’ testifying to high-quality craftsmanship forming a seamless link between the created garden and the natural landscape. Ivo Pauwels has written over 50 books on landscaping and gardening. Dominique Van Huffel specialises in photographing landscapes.

In contemplating the future and how this might look, it is architects who give us the built landscapes, transforming science fiction into exciting, awe-inspiring designs, challenging perceptions and pushing boundaries to meet the demands of an ever-increasing population and the impact of this on the natural environment. Finite resources require creativity and vision; balancing ecology with technology and competing needs is the architecture of the future. Futuristic presents designs by more than forty architectural firms, their work organised into ‘Urban’, ‘Towers’, ‘Atmosphere’, ‘Green’, ‘Water’, and ‘Bionics’, all of them as impressive as they are surprising,

Featuring over fifty incredible urban design projects, all of them the work of some of the most respected architects within the United Arab Emirates. Futuristic cities that rise up out of the desert, oases of steel and glass that seek to connect with the natural environment, skylines that reach ever higher; these are technically brilliant constructions that reflect the economic prosperity, the excitement and creativity of a new and emerging Arab culture. This is architecture that reflects a culture no longer driven exclusively by oil, but actively explores new technology and renewable energy, creating sustainability within the competing challenges of urban landscapes.

New Residential Landscapes features inspiring architectural design projects for a new environmentally aware generation; practical and innovative ideas for landscapes that live and breathe, in synch with the natural world. This collection includes residential landscapes from all over the world, from individual to communal space with the common themes of using natural resources, building with and around the local environment to create living spaces where elements connect, where various forces combine to reflect an increasing awareness of the need for holistic, harmonious living.

Inaugurated in 1984 and held every year since, the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers Regional Awards of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects have acknowledged and celebrated the best work by architects on Australia’s Gold Coast over the course of three decades. This book is a photographic record of those achievements, presenting the prize-winning work realised in the region, as well as projects commended for their contribution to the region’s architecture. Features the work of some of Australia’s leading architects, such as Buchan Group, Cox Rayner, Donovan Hill, Hassell, Jackson Architecture, Paul Uhlmann, White Architecture, and Woods Bagot.

Seek Truth Find Beauty

In the world of modern art, the idea of appropriation, or the conscious manipulation of the recognised world of another artist, has long been accepted as a legitimate strategy in criticism of the tradition of art authorship. Philip Johnson consistently dealt with the concept of appropriation and used it as a design strategy from the very beginning of his illustrious career. Philip Johnson and His Mischief looks at the concept of appropriation and how Johnson’s style was influenced by his first mentor, Mies van der Rohe, and then by post-modern artists. This title serves to review Johnson’s body of work and shows that, far from being a weakness, his use of appropriation was a major part of his innovative success.

GARDENING

Beautifully written and meticulously researched, Water Lilies is a detailed account of the introduction of these exotic flowers into European culture, changing the known landscape of water and light, mind and imagination, largely through the passion of one man, Joseph Bory Latour-Marliac (1830-1911). It tells the love story of a life devoted to propagation, cultivation and commercialisation, but more than that, it gives an insight into the enduring influence of water lilies on the creative imagination of a generation of horticulturists, artists and poets, leaving the words and images that are deeply embedded in our culture today.

Exploration of the New World offered farreaching possibilities for the acquisition of new plants and trees. Gardens and landscapes were transformed by an influx of American roots and through the past three centuries gardens have displayed important links with the United States of America. Featuring a comprehensive collection of some beautiful parks and gardens across England, landscaped by American designers, and those at home, this is a testament to all those who were inspired not only by new and exciting plant varieties but by the cultural ideals they embodied.

David Austin has an international following as a rose grower with an intimate knowledge of his chosen flower. In this authoritative book, he examines the historical development of the rose and discusses its place in the contemporary garden landscape. He has selected the best and most beautiful roses for today’s gardens including Old Roses, Hybrid Teas and Floribundas, Small Roses, Species Roses, Shrub Roses, Climbing Roses and Rambling Roses. His wonderfully descriptive personal recommendations are combined with sumptuous photographs, making this an essential reference for all gardeners and a must-have for rose-lovers everywhere.

In this beautiful book, which features numerous full-page colour photographs, Carlos March, a businessmen and nature-lover, relates the story of his garden in Altarejos, located in the foothills of the Sierra Morena, to the north of the Province of Seville. Surrounded by wild mountain pastureland, among rocks and slate slopes replete with rock roses and holm oaks, this spectacular garden is stocked with three hundred varieties of roses and more than four hundred species of trees, bushes and covering plants. After thirty-five years of careful work, it represents a prime example of balance and respectful integration with the natural environment.

BUSINESS & MARKETING

#inthemoment answers the tricky question of why it often takes 9 months to make an advertisement that only lasts for 30 seconds... for this reason, it is acknowledged that the output of the advertising sector is remarkably small. Each year, the average advertising bureau doesn’t even produce enough text and photos to fill a single newspaper or television programme and this in an age when advertising is only as valuable as the public it reaches, the attention it attracts and the connections it creates. This insightful volume introduces you to the concept and secrets of, ‘real-time content’. The theory being that analysing, planning, creating and spreading content in real-time generates a greater dynamic; you adjust better and you learn as you go.

Who in the fashion world hasn’t heard of the famous Antwerp Six? They have become recognised names in the fashion world and Belgium has plenty more budding new talent waiting to follow in their footsteps. However, the current economic climate is changing rapidly; globalisation and growing competition are increasingly important factors to survival within this fast-moving industry. Luxury brands and major chain stores are taking over the market; digitalisation and online sales are turning traditional-value chains on their head and the need for sustainability is becoming a priority. This invaluable book offers the knowledge and skills that the fashion sector needs, to take advantage of these trends: financial management, internationalisation strategies, fashion marketing and social media, production and distribution.

In today’s highly competitive business world, companies, their managers and executives are under constant pressure to achieve results. In order to survive, they need to be pro-active and flexible in their thinking and decision-making. Increasingly, managers are using the skills of professional coaches. Coaches act as sounding boards, offering new perspectives on problemsolving, facilitating a more productive and creative management exchange. Often however, there is a reluctance for organisations to take on board the value of coaching, possibly due to negative beliefs, inherent prejudice or simply a lack of understanding as to its role. In I Want A Coach, Leen Lambrechts and Marleen Boen aim to create greater clarity. In their fluent and accessible style, they shed light on what coaching really is, why there is a growing need for it, and ultimately outline its potential for guaranteed success.

BRITISH HERITAGE

Buckingham Palace is one of the most readily recognised buildings in the world and one of the few remaining working royal palaces. This official guide to Buckingham Palace provides an illustrated account of the history of the royal palace that serves as Her Majesty The Queen’s office and London residence, as well as the administrative headquarters of the Royal Household. It contains an introduction to the Palace today; a history of the building and architecture of the Palace; fascinating stories about the Palace’s occupants, from George III to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II; a visitor’s map of the State Rooms and an illustrated tour of the State Rooms and their contents.

Hylands House, Chelmsford, Essex, is situated in 574 acres of historic landscaped parkland. Originally built in 1730 as a modest red brick Queen Anne style house, it has changed and developed considerably throughout its history. Nine private owners, each keen to stamp their mark on the house and estate, extended or remodelled the property according to their tastes and the fashion of the day. One owner engaged Humphry Repton to redesign the parkland and enlarge the house in line with the Romantic Movement fashionable at the time. Hylands’ many roles have included private home, a military hospital during the First World War and SAS headquarters in the Second World War. Following a 20-year programme of restoration to the house and landscape, including Repton’s parkland with magnificent views from the house to the lake, the house and the park opened to the public.

This new publication follows one of the great British literary shrines, the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth, home to Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë and their brother Branwell. Here the sisters wrote their remarkable novels, including Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, and the parsonage became a focus of literary tourism even during Charlotte’s lifetime. With an illuminating introduction by Professor Ann Sumner, Executive Director of The Brontë Society, this beautifully produced book follows a major refurbishment of the parsonage, based on historical research and scientific investigation to produce an historically accurate scheme.

In Army Of One, photo journalist Elisabeth Real tells the story of six American veterans whose lives have been irreversibly altered by the war in Iraq. All but one of the veterans have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Between 2006 and 2013, Real photographed and interviewed these young men, trying to uncover what they went through and how, in turn, this affected them on returning home, as they re-connected with families and tried to make lives, away from the army. Elisabeth Real breaks down numbers, focusing on the individual soldier: the lone “Army Of One”, many of whom feel this means that they have been forgotten, as soldiers and as human beings.

After the First World War, the town of Ypres was reduced to ruins. It was literally rebuilt from the ground up. The Menin Gate, was also restored; the place where tens of thousands of soldiers left for the Front, never to return. Today the Menin Gate is inscribed with the names of 55,000 soldiers from across the British Empire. It is a monument for those who fell and were forever lost, those who could not be buried. Their names are ordered hierarchically by unit and rank. Every day at 20.00 hrs, a lone bugler at the Menin Gate sounds the Last Post and the fallen are remembered. Text in English, French and Dutch.

At the beginning of WWI, not a single European army was prepared to deal with the large numbers of victims in an humanitarian way. The firepower of the armies was increased, the defence reinforced, but victim care continued to lag seriously behind. This book is an emotive study of the suffering of war - from WWI to the present. Offering analysis and reflection, it looks at the way in which psychiatrists, reporters, artists and war photographers currently perceive and treat the psychological suffering, the often invisible legacy of those involved in war and conflict.

Bart Heirweg spent two years photographing the war sites and emotive landscapes of Flanders Silent Fields. His journey took him from Nieuwpoort to Koksijde, via Veurne, Diksmuide, Ieper (Ypres) and Poperinge, and through the Heuvelland all the way to the northern French border at Wervicq and Comines. Heirweg shot his photographs mainly in the early morning or late evening, at times of the day when these locations are literally ‘at peace’, neither seen nor visited; the result is a series of images that are uniquely serene, thought-provoking and ultimately moving. Text in English and Dutch.

HISTORY & SOCIAL HISTORY

The colonisation of the world by European powers led to the production of a wealth of images of the colonised cultures and peoples. Images of North American Indians play an important role in our visual culture. This book illuminates how they are represented, and their political and historico-cultural background, based on the so-called ‘Indian Museum’ of the Dresden sculptor Ferdinand Pettrich. In the 1830s, Pettrich travelled to Washington and portrayed representatives of Indian tribes in 33 reliefs, statues, busts and bozzetti made of plaster. The classically-influenced forms of these representations, the influence of the simultaneously emerging ‘Indian painting’, as well as the lasting fascination of the subject of ‘Indians’ are presented here, along with the political context of the era in which the works were created. Text in English and German. 120 years ago the first permission was granted for archaeological excavations in Ephesos. The signature of Emperor Franz Josef I laid the foundation for one of the most prominent excavation enterprises in the world and to this day it has lost none of its significance for science or its fascination for visitors. In their joint book project, archaeologist Sabine Ladstätter and photographer Lois Lammerhuber venture behind the historical front. Central for them is the economic role of Ephesos as antique trading town, modern archaeological enterprise and visitor magnet. Text in English, German and Turkish.

For four centuries the Iroquois and their culture have engaged the European imagination and have decisively shaped the popular perception of the Indian. They have been praised as sage orators and prudent diplomats and dreaded for their cruelty in warfare. The pre-eminent position of women in their society made them precursors of feminism, while the men’s hairstyles became a trademark of rebellious youth. Based on historical paintings and drawings, rare ethnographic objects, and extraordinary examples of contemporary Iroquois art, this richly illustrated volume recounts the often troubled history of the Iroquois, which shaped and strengthened their pride in their culture and their ongoing struggle for recognition of their rights as an indigenous people.

On the anniversary of the discovery of logarithms 400 years ago, the Arithmeum in Bonn presents a selection of the collection by Ijzebrand Schuitemas (1929-2013), which contains more than 4,000 slide rules. The exhibition catalogue introduces the brilliant innovation of the slide rule, shows its interesting history and deals with the diversity of this calculating instrument, which became indispensable for numerous professional groups and which were still used in various ways until well into the 20th century. The introduction of the calculator meant the demise of this historically and culturally fascinating object.

Everyone has heard of the Nobel Prize, yet many are unfamiliar with the faces of those who have won the honour. One man (other than the King of Sweden), who knows all the living Nobel laureates personally is Peter Badge, who has spent thirteen years travelling the world, on commission to photograph these respected and illustrious luminaries. To date, the Berlin photographer has met and photographed more than 400 of them, usually in locations they have chosen and in natural and relaxed poses that seem to bring their character to the fore. Ingenious Encounters is a unique collection. Recorded are some memorable moments in time; the comic interview with schizophrenic John Nash; an element of personal risk when Badge found himself in Moscow without a valid visa, looking for Alexander Solzhenitsyn; and there was the emotive shoot of Bruce Merrifield, at the end of his life, literally on his death-bed.

The birth of Siam has been traditionally marked by the founding of the great city-states of Sukhothai and Ayutthaya respectively. These civilisations grew out of a rich milieu of cultures and traditions in the region present from as far back as prehistoric times. The aim of this peer-reviewed publication is to present new research and discoveries to reconstruct the cultures, religious persuasions and artistic traditions in pre-modern Thailand and its neighbouring regions. With varied contributions by renowned experts, the public and academics alike will gain a richer and more multifaceted appreciation of this early history which played such a formative role in the birth of Siam.

Henry Gittins, born in 1858, went to Canada as a young adventurer where he started his career as a railway engineer. In 1885 he joined a survey team in Siam, aiming to develop a national railway system. He spent thirty-three years there, progressing to the highest position in the Siamese Railway Department. During his time in Siam, he kept a series of diaries which not only give a first-hand account of the difficult and dangerous conditions surrounding the construction of railways at that time, but also a fascinating picture of the emergence of Siam (now Thailand) into the modern world. On Track is an affectionate tribute from the author to the grandfather he never met, but got to know and appreciate through the diaries that were his legacy.

Full page colour illustrations bring the yachts alive, set as they are in their natural element, at sea, on the waves; detailed descriptions give an amazing insider’s view of the construction of individual boats, the routes sailed, the crews, the highs and lows of what was undoubtedly, extremely tough and competitive sailing, the victories and the defeats. Paintings by Tim Taylor, a leading marine artist are an integral part of the book’s appeal; he has captured the pure essence, the spirit of the race and its place in history.

Published to accompany an exhibition at the National Galleries of Scotland, The Art of Golf illustrates around sixty works from across the United Kingdom and shows how the noble game has been depicted in European art from the seventeenth century to the present day in a variety of media: paintings, prints, photographs, cartoons and posters. In his essay Michael Clarke, the exhibition curator, outlines the story behind the development of the game while art historian Kenneth McConkey places the works of the artist John Lavery in the context of the sport. The key image is the greatest golfing painting in the world, Charles Lees, The Golfers, 1847, which portrays in fascinating detail a match.

Discipline of Pleasure James Bampfield

In Discipline of Pleasure, philosopher and change-management consultant James Bampfield calls for a new approach to living, one that is centred on finding pure enjoyment in life, joy in living. Critically reflecting on the work of thinkers such as Jeremy Bentham, Epicurus, Buddha and Freud, he suggests that we move away from the ‘rigid truth perspective’, characterised by either a focus on duty and obligation or on suffering and sacrifice, towards a more personalised way of looking at the world, one that values pleasure as a means to a happier existence. His philosophy is that to be really happy, we need to accept the need for pleasure into our lives; suggesting that it is a fundamental element of our internal world, universally recognisable, offering us an immediate and tangible ‘compass’ by which to live. We say that we are happy, often without thinking too deeply; we struggle however, to acknowledge that we are experiencing pleasure, we seem to find the concept of joy more difficult to define. Yet, the pursuit of pleasure is undeniably a postmodern concept and entirely relevant for today’s society; the ‘me-generation’ is endlessly searching for the route to pleasure. Finding joy, however, on a meaningful level in a consumerist world, with superficial distractions requires self-discipline, as well as truthful reflection, and a developing awareness into what really offers the potential for pleasure. POPULAR PSYCHOLOGY

In his Pleasure Typology, which outlines different levels of pleasure - ego pleasure, simple pleasure, soul pleasure and spirit pleasure - Bampfield suggests that the real source of pleasure in life may involve loving and serving others; simply changing the way we think about happiness, may have the potential to lead to greater selffulfilment and a more self-aware, ethically conscious society.
