An American Renaissance Beaux-Arts Architecture in New York City Phillip James Dodd: Foreword by Julian Fellowes Photography by Jonathan Wallen n the histor of the nited States, the Gilded ge, a term first coined by Mark Twain, is associated with an era of unparalleled growth, prosperity and cultural change. Spanning from the 1880s to the 1930s, this period is also fittingl referred to as the merican enaissance. And just like in the Italian Renaissance, an elite group ruled New ork. hese were the titans of merican finance and industr whose unprecedented, and unchecked, power and wealth was supreme in the land — Astor, Carnegie, Morgan, Rockefeller, and Vanderbilt. To this wealthy elite, it was not enough that the city merely be the nation’s financial capital. heir collecti e dream was to create a new cit , a new metropolis that would also become the nation’s cultural capital. Simply put, their dream was to create a new “Paris on the Hudson” — and to do that they needed architecture rich in grandeur, full of historical reference, and dripping in embellishment, to aunt their wealth and power to the world. Enter the Beaux-Arts style.
A glorious, monumental homage to the architecture of New York City’s Gilded Age, focusing on the classical influences, richly decorated details, and grandly conceived spaces of such landmarks as Grand Central Station, Grant’s Memorial, The Metropolitan Museum, the Frick, the Morgan Library and many more.

Building the Brooklyn Bridge, 1869–1883 An Illustrated History with Images in 3D Jeffrey I Richman Building the Brooklyn Bridge reminds us of the historic importance of this iconic bridge that was once considered the eighth wonder of the world. It opened up development across the East River and made travel between the two independent cities of Brooklyn and New York quicker and more reliable; especially once the bridge railway was fully operational in September 1883, four months after the bridge opened. Historian Jeffrey Richman describes in engaging detail how the Brooklyn Bridge was built over 14 years and explains the function of each of its parts, from the anchorages to the massive cables. The story of the construction is also told through 255 remarkable images, many never before published, including 44 images in 3D, specially created for this book. These historic photographs, woodcuts, and engineering drawings take us back in time to when all of America, and much of the world, watched with excitement as a singular bridge of unprecedented size and technology was built over one of the busiest waterways in the world.
A visually rich, informative history of the building of this iconic structure told in an authoritative text and hundreds of images – 44 of which are in 3D and can be viewed with the special glasses included!

Alice Neel An Engaged Eye Serge Lasvignes, Bernard Blistène, Angela Lampe, Jeremy Lewison, Larne Abse Gogarty One of the greatest portrait artists of the 20th century, Alice Neel’s vibrant, expressionistic paintings revealed a breath-taking depth of emotion within her subjects, and pushed boundaries of social justice throughout the 1900s. Her dedication to capturing the truth of humanity is evident: she painted those rejected by society, the victims of social or gendered oppression. Latin American and Puerto Rican immigrants, African-American writers excluded from the intellectual elite, single mothers struggling to raise their children, homosexual couples — all were presented with equal candidness by Neel’s brush. er un inching approach to the female bod took a ground-breaking step towards reclaiming the nude from the male gaze, and the activism inherent to her art resonates with viewers to this day. This book highlights Neel’s political and social commitment to her art, as a figurati e painter at odds with the artistic st les of the a ant-gardes of her time. Structured in two thematic parts — social injustice and gender inequality — this retrospective includes some 60 paintings and drawings as well as numerous documents. Following the artist from her first works in the 9 s to her final e ocati e self-portrait, made shortl before her death, this is the defining treatise on lice Neel.
Published to accompany a major exhibition at the Pompidou Center – now postponed until Fall 2022 – this book explores the life and work of renowned feminist artist Alice Neel (1900-1984).

Sheila Hicks Thread Trees River Edited by Christoph ThunHohenstein and Bärbel Vischer The textiles and installations of the American artist Sheila Hicks (*1934) evade traditional concepts of textile art. Hicks expands the languages of sculpture, painting, and the environment by creating new forms and dimensions. Inspired by the ideas of the Wiener Werkstätte and the Bauhaus, she dissolves the boundaries of medium and material and employs historical techniques of knotting and weaving as contemporary instruments to initiate intercultural dialogue and to create an awareness of the small deviants in grid pattern that make life interesting. With the publication Thread Trees River, the artist sketches the interplay of nature, textiles, architecture, and space through works from the entire spectrum of her art.

Rebel Stylist Caroline Baker - The Woman Who Invented Street Fashion Iain R. Webb Caroline Baker is the antidote to high fashion. As the legendary fashion editor of Nova magazine in the 1960s, her style was quite literally cutting-edge (she famously chopped up clothes to achieve her desired looks). She is credited with challenging the status quo of the industry and society at large, and introducing street fashion to the mass market. Stylist-of-choice for the most dynamic female designers on the scene – Katharine Hamnett and Vivienne Westwood – Caroline has continued her trajectory as a fashion provocateur. This book offers an in-depth overview of Baker’s work. It is divided into sections that highlight specific recurring themes and tropes such as Punk Rock, DIY, Utility and Sportswear. Accompanied with personal commentary from aker herself, this is the definiti e guide to aroline aker and her in uence on fashion.

Deity’s Likeness Olga Michi Art, war, carnival or cult — masks have two sides: they conceal and hide, and at the same time create new personalities, strange and captivating at once. So, too, do masks reveal world views of time and place: cult masks from Africa, medie al knight helmets, fantas masks of famous film heroes like arth ader, or gas masks and VR glasses as modern functional objects. In this new photo book, Russian photographer Olga Michi traces our millenniaold fascination with masks. Her expressive pictures place the masks centerstage, creating a new, surrealistic aesthetic. With fascinating texts on each mask’s cultural-historical significance, this high- ualit photo book delights, informs, and ignites the imagination.

6 Months in the Fridge Travels Through Northern Europe Michael Königshofer What does winter look like in the far north? According to the clichés: as dark and cold as a refrigerator. And yet it is precisely in these wintertime months that photographer Michael Königshofer picks up his camera and heads to the Arctic Circle! In this rich and original photo book, the Scandinavia-savvy Austrian captures much more than the clichéd images of the Northern Lights. With an eye on the coexistence of nature and culture, Königshofer explores how lives are lived in this intense and extreme environment, from the traditional ivory carver in Greenland to the ice surfer in the North Cape. The result is an authentic portrait of Scandinavian life, showing a whole new side to life up north.

Frank Rispoli - High Heels Frank Rispoli, Erick Bradshaw Hughes As a clubgoer in the 1970s and ‘80s, Frank Rispoli documented the Punk and New Wave club scenes in New York City. ‘The epicentre of everything was Danceteria’, recalls Rispoli of the club where Madonna made her debut. Recognizing the inherent expression of sexuality and desire in both fashion and club culture, Rispoli captured the intertwining of the two. Focusing exclusively on women’s shoes – a fascination he traces back to childhood – he photographed clubbers, bar patrons, singers, and band members, utilizing the staged sets and bathrooms of the clubs, and the taxis and sidewalks of the city as his backdrops. Seen together, these images represent a time capsule from a hedonistic age.

Boudoir Ifa Brand
Shades of Sensuality Tina Trumpp
Ifa Brand’s journey from model to photographer was prompted by a desire to seize artistic control of her own image. Inspired by pioneers of fetish style, Charles Guyette and Gene Bilbrew, and 1950s’ pin-ups, Bettie Page and Jayne Mansfield, she has created her own distinctive fusion of old-school glamor and fetish art. From the beginning, she has worked exclusively with Polaroid, whose graininess and technical limitations she exploits. The result is a series of self-portraits that convey her personal explorations of sensuality and eroticism.
As one of the few women with countless exhibitions and awards in recent years, Tina Trumpp has made a name for herself in the nude photography scene. For her, the female nude is never just an erotic motif. Every one of her photographs is an ode to the grace, elegance and strength of her subjects. With natural light and soft rendering, she creates unique and sensual nude imagery: thoughtful, seductive and always incomparably aesthetic. This photo book is the first large-format publication of Tina Trumpp’s photographs, a powerful collection and combination of sexuality, serenit , and self-confidence.

Monument Avenue Brian Rose If Richmond VA represents the historic heart of the Confederacy, then Monument Avenue was meant to memorialize its soul. Almost from the moment they were erected, however, the monuments to Confederate heroes sparked controversy. In the summer of 2020, following the death of George Floyd, Black Lives Matter protesters converged on the avenue to vent their fury. On July 10th, Jefferson Davis’s statue was dragged from its pedestal. Two days later, Brian Rose packed up his cameras in New York and drove back to his home state to document the last days of the grand boulevard of the Lost Cause.

Park Life A Love Letter to London’s Greenspaces Sophia Spring
Life in Plastik Eli Rezkallah
2020 sparked a re-energized love of the capital’s parks for its many inhabitants, and photographer Sophia Spring was no exception. Camera in hand, Spring tra erses the first dates, famil meetups, yoga classes, swimming parties and other familiar life activities that suddenly started to take place outdoors. London is unique for its multitude of green spaces, which occupy some of the most expensive real estate in the world, but yet remain free and communal for all. This book celebrates the salvation that the accessibility of nature brought; and will continue to bring.
Beirut born and based visual artist and creative director Eli Rezkallah founded the visual arts magazine Plastik in 2009. It was unlike anything that had been produced in the Middle East previously, with photographs of drag queens, nudity, bold color, dramatic staging, and cuttingedge visual stories by himself and other artists. In addition to the magazine, Plastik is now a studio, a gallery, and a social media presence. This book is a bestof celebration of Eli Rezkallah’s work from Plastik, capturing his accessible, provocative, and socially astute work in a single volume. “Plastik’s gift to the world is beauty, colour, magic and imagination. The gift is more important today than ever before.” RuPaul

Heroes Women in Snowboarding Jérôme Tanon Heroes: Women in Snowboarding is the product of two years’ work by photographer Jérôme Tanon, following some of the most dedicated female snowboarders around the world. It is a declaration of love, highlighting the culture, passion and dedication of female snowboarders. Though women’s snowboarding has developed radically over the last decade, few photographs celebrate the champions of the sport. Over two winter seasons, Tanon traveled the world to meet several snowboarders, hear their stories and photograph them in the streets, the parks and the back-country. The sheer passion they put into their sport was instantly obvious. Shared here are personal stories and artworks by the snowboarders themselves. 111 Places in Women’s History in Washington, DC That You Must Not Miss Kaitlin Calogera, Rebecca Grawl Women’s history is everywhere in Washington, if curious locals and adventurous tourists know where to look. As the District of Columbia evolved into one of the world’s top tourist destinations, women emerged as pioneers and a town created to house the federal government matured into a gilded cit af uent in feminist culture. Historic houses, hidden alleyways, and neighborhood parks stand as memorials to America’s founding mothers who built the nation’s capital. This book records the legacies of these women and encourages readers to explore their names on headstones, street signs, and buildings, while also discovering where hidden history is unmarked.

111 Dark Places in England That You Shouldn’t Miss Philip R. Stone
111 Places in London That You Shouldn’t Miss John Sykes
Silicon Valley has become the Mesopotamia of the Digital Age, built on cycles of innovation and disruption, monstrous ambition, and a steady supply of labor and capital. Yet for all that’s known about companies like Apple, Google, and Facebook - and the personas behind those companies - the culture of Silicon Valley remains elusive and contradictory, even to many locals. This unique guidebook, written by longtime local Floriana Petersen, takes you on an insider’s tour of 111 cool, offbeat, and very compelling places that offer insight into the evolving character of Silicon Valley.
Our significant dead and mortalit moments are remembered at dark tourism sites, where complex issues of politics, history and ethics are exposed. his first-e er tra el guide to dark tourism in England offers a thoughtpro oking compendium of difficult heritage. We remember the dead or acts of suffering through ‘heritage that hurts’. This book explores infamous acts as well as obscure dark tourism sites lost to memory. 111 Dark Places in England That You Shouldn’t Miss will help shine light on dark tourism and inherent complex issues associated with commemorating our dead. Dark tourism is politically vulnerable and ethically laden with moral commentary. This book attempts to be authoritative yet accessible in exploring sites of pain and shame.

It invites you to see Little Ben or the fake 10 Downing Street, and answers both conventional and unusual questions. What, apart from Rolling Scones, will you see at God’s Own Junkyard? Where does an old-school gentleman buy his wine and umbrellas? Why did Robbie Williams feud with his next-door neighbor? How has the city commemorated the Queen Mother and Princess Diana? In which park do 100-year-old naked ladies cavort on the banks of the Thames? Where did Lenin and Julian Assange campaign for their beliefs? And which bridge rolls itself up?

There are exactly two black rhinos left in the world, a subspecies of the white rhino, the very last of their kind. In this deeply poignant tribute, photographer Joachim Schmeisser presents these rhinos as well as other wild animals in the Amboseli National Park in Kenya, where Maasai tribespeople ensure that nobody endangers them. With his breathtaking black-and-white images, Schmeisser brings us up close to these extraordinary and endangered creatures, creating a powerful document of nature’s splendor and fragility.
The South of France in the Golden 1950s. The sun is shining and palm trees cast jagged shadows on a polished motor purring up the drive to the Grand Hotel. This new edition of his Riviera Cocktail has all the fabulous and fascinating ingredients of the era: movie stars and starlets, gamblers and musicians, business magnates and faded nobility — captured out and about on the sparkling Riviera and in more intimate moments.

Understanding Jewellery David Bennett, Daniela Mascetti
Christie’s The Jewellery Archives Revealed Vincent Meylan
Understanding Jewellery is a comprehensive guide to 19th and 20th Century jewelry. From the methods used to identify and date pieces, to the factors that can affect their value, this volume contains an abundance of expertise relating to precious stones and metals. With almost magnificent color illustrations accompanied by straightforward but thorough explanations, this publication offers a richer and more accessible reading experience than traditional textdominated books. Including introductions to precious and semi-precious stones, and details of the stylistic developments of jewelry over the last 200 years, this volume is a standard work of reference and an invaluable tool for collectors and dealers alike.
For centuries, the stories of the world’s great jewelry collections have lain hidden within the archives of Christie’s, the celebrated auctioneers. From the tragic European queens, Mary, Queen of Scots and Marie Antoinette - both beheaded - to Hollywood royalty such as Elizabeth Taylor, the vaults sparkle with the most famous (and occasionally notorious) names of the last 250 years. Author Vincent Meylan explores these remarkable jewelry archives, revealing the m steries within for the first time. Each sale had its intrigue, each its story to tell.

Expertly curating the extensive archives, Vincent Meylan has drawn out the key details of each momentous sale. Original documents from the vaults are reproduced in the book, alongside hundreds of color illustrations of the jewels and their owners.
Van Cleef & Arpels Treasures and Legends Vincent Meylan From Empress Farah and the secrets of the treasure of Iran, to Queen Marie Amélie’s missing emeralds, via Fantômas and the blood-red rubies of the kings of Burma, entering the world of Van Cleef & Arpels is like embarking upon a fascinating treasure hunt. In this book, Vincent Meylan explores a century in the history of one of the most prestigious Parisian jewelry dynasties. Van Cleef & Arpels: Treasures and Legends is full of extravagant fairytales and fascinating behind-the-scenes revelations. It also tells the sometimes-troubled story of a dynasty of jewelers, of gifted men and women who have, for over a century, helped to shape that inimitably Parisian art de vivre that is the envy of the world.

Photographers on the Art of Photography Charles Moriarty
Bicycling Through Time The Farren Collection Paul Farren, Charlie Farren
Charles Moriarty, Stills department manager for Star Wars and photographer for Amy Winehouse, presents Photographers on the Art of Photography: a series of intimate conversations with some of the most highly regarded names in photography. From celebrity portraitists such as Terry O’Neill, to famed fashion photographers like Jerry Schatzberg and wildlife specialists Tim Flach and Sue Flood, this book offers a unique insight into all angles of the profession. Twenty celebrated photographers discuss how they got started, as well as their favored techniques, motivations, inspirations and greatest accomplishments. Discover each artist’s vision in their own words and re ect on what makes their talents unique.
Paul Farren claims he and his wife Charlie have around 85 percent of the pre-1900 bicycles in Australia — all under one roof in a Melbourne warehouse-cum-museum. Thirty years of hunting them down and collecting has resulted in one of the most impressive early bike collections in the world. It includes 160 pre-1900 bicycles, including hobby horses, boneshakers and Penny Farthings, as well as early 20thcentury models. The collection charts the development of the bicycle, which foreshadows the invention of the motor car in many surprising ways. It also shows wider social change and the role the bicycle has played in female emancipation, war and its progression from plaything of the wealthy to utilitarian mode of transport of the masses.

Atlantic City is a powerful photographic record of the destruction of the USA’s most famous resort town – the ‘World’s Playground’. Once the casinos came instead of reviving the town, they killed it. Contains commentaries by news and broadcast media, juxtaposed with contemporary tweets by Donald Trump, chief among the villains in this piece. The images are haunting. Atlantic City may never recover.
