Goats and Sheep. A Portrait Farm Introduction and Photographs by Kevin Horan Essay by Elena Passarello When American photographer Kevin Horan moved from city to country, he found among his animal companions goats and sheep whose chorus of sounds suggested they were not just herd animals, but perhaps individuals as well. Experienced in portraiture, Horan decided to photograph them in his studio, as though they were privileged clients. The resulting images ask us to notice the variety, dignity, and personalities of these lowliest of creatures, who speak to us through the camera in a profile, a sideward glance, or direct gaze. With different coats, faces, and expressions, they are funny, fascinating, intelligent, curious, engaging “others” who command our undivided attention and respect. They remind us that we too are fellow creatures - and the camera isn’t always on us.

Dog Show 1961-1978 Vintage Britain Shirley Baker These playful photographs capture the quirkiness of owners and their canine companions at one of the most quintessentially British events: the dog show. From Pekingese to Poodles, Beagles to Bulldogs, these images highlight not just the best in show but the eccentricity of the British obsession for dogs. They reveal how nothing has really changed besides the owners’ primed hairdos and their dated clothing; the dogs are timeless.

Oliver’s Birds By Oliver Hellowell Photography by Oliver Hellowell Forewards by Iolo Williams and Ken Jenkins Oliver not only snaps birds; his camera shutter also clicks closed for the play of light across rippling water, the mist rising off a wood in early spring and the rolling Somerset hills where he was raised. But birds are a favorite subject of his, and his camera never fails to do them justice. Oliver’s sensitivity to lighting, color contrast and mood imbues each picture with a unique atmosphere, resulting in precise shots of professional quality. The birds’ glossy eyes, their beaks, the intricate patterns on their feathers and the texture of their down have all been captured with a patience and skill that is admired by dedicated fans from all across the world.

Kenzo Takada Kazuko Masui and Chihiro Masui In 1970, the young Japanese designer Kenzo Takada opened his first boutique, Jungle Jap, in Paris and revolutionized the fashion world. His colorful, ethnic, and nomadic-influenced collections, made with luxurious and vibrantly patterned textiles, tweaked the conventions of haute couture while maintaining the quality of traditional European clothing houses. He was influenced by Parisian fashion and Japanese kimonos, boldly mixing colors and prints, cuts and materials. His vibrant palette and pattern combinations were joyful and whimsical – very different from the subtle tailoring of the traditional Paris couturier. In his inspired blend of the opulent and the exotic, he developed a signature style and found early success. With stunning photography, and over 300 sketches from Kenzo’s private collection, this book traces more than forty years of his creative output. It includes photographs from his high-energy runway shows, in addition to personal photographs, and a behind-the-scene look at the creation of a spectacular wedding dress, opening a window on the creative process and capturing Kenzo’s energy, vision, and presence. Superbly illustrated throughout with pencilled and hand colored sketches, swatched drawings, and previously unpublished archival photographs, the authors explore Kenzo’s career, tracing the evolution of his cult label in a look-book of visual exuberance.

The Best of Norman Parkinson Edited by Carrie Kania Norman Parkinson (1913-1990) is one of the greatest and most influential photographers of the twentieth century. Beginning in the 1930s his style of work helped define the look of each subsequent decade (including the New Look of Paris in the ‘50s and Swinging London of the ‘60s) and his impact on his followers was immense. Parkinson gained recognition in his early years revolutionizing photography by moving female models from the static, serious and controlled environment of the photographic studio to real-life locations and exotic surroundings. This dynamic and spontaneous style garnered the attention of numerous fashion magazines including Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and Town & Country, earning Parkinson international recognition. His photographs helped create the age of the supermodel and made Parkinson the photographer of choice for fashion designers, artists and writers, musicians and actors, and British royalty. In a career that spanned six decades, Parkinson dazzled the world and inspired his peers with sparkling inventiveness as a portrait and fashion photographer. His achievements were recognized by the Queen of England when, in 1981, he was awarded a C.B.E. (Commander of the British Empire). In that same year he was also honored with a major retrospective exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Route 66 The Main Street of America

Roaming America Exploring the National Parks Renee & Matthew Hahnel

Atlantic City Photographs by Brian Rose Introduction by Paul Goldberger

Route 66, the first continuous road linking Chicago and Los Angeles, is an iconic American highway that attracts thousands of visitors each year. Originally designed in 1926 to create a speedier connection with the Pacific coast, today Route 66 represents the opposite: deceleration and leisure time. Passing through eight states, drivers see bustling cities like Santa Fe and ghost towns like Calico, natural spectacles such as the Mojave Desert, and the glories of the Grand Canyon. A road trip on Route 66 draws on the nostalgia of the American dream: the freedom to reinvent oneself, the lure of open country, the cult of ‘Easy Rider’, desert vistas, neon signs, vintage motels, mom-and-pop diners – in short, it is the symbol of a nation that idealizes being ‘on the road’. This superb collection of photographs highlights forgotten places and outstanding sights along the legendary highway.

The tag line on the popular Renee Roaming outdoor adventure, travel, and photography blog is “Let’s Get Lost!” What you’ll find when you get lost in this book is a beautifully photographed, seriously armchair-envy-producing seven month road trip – overland in a camper van – to all 59 US National Parks. The book breathes wanderlust, but it is also bursting with interesting travel and extensive photography tips. The practical fact sheets and Renee’s easy-going narration make for an inspiring travel and photography book that rates each park by beauty, accessibility, crowds, facilities, and photogenic landscapes. It maps out the best roads, best hiking trails, and best camping spots. A unique guide and invaluable resource in planning a trip to any (or all) of the National Parks.

Atlantic City was born in the midnineteenth century and grew so big, so fast, that it captured the American imagination. It was ‘the World’s Playground’. Its hotels were the largest and finest, its nightclubs legendary, its boardwalk an endless promenade. And then, as it began to fade, the casinos came. And instead of reviving the city they killed it. Chief among the villains in this piece is Donald J Trump, who built his casinos on dunes of debt and bled them into bankruptcy. On the presidential campaign trail Trump boasted of his ‘success’ in Atlantic City, how he had outwitted Wall Street and leveraged his own name for riches. He would do for America what he had done for Atlantic City, he said. And so it came to be. Brian Rose has documented what remains of the city in the aftermath of the casino explosion. The images are haunting. Atlantic City may never recover.

Lee and Me An Intimate Portrait of Lee Krasner Ruth Appelhof Angry, outrageous, defiant, and courageous are some of the words that describe the American Abstract Expressionist artist Lee Krasner (1908-1984), the subject of this very personal memoir. Best remembered by many as Jackson Pollock’s widow, she is regarded more by “art-world insiders” as the producer of a major body of work that influenced the evolution of contemporary art – in particular, that made by women in the 20th and 21st centuries. As a scholar and a friend, Appelhof re-examines Krasner’s contributions in light of the intellectual and emotional experiences, and relationships, that she so candidly shared with her in weeks of interviews. These recollections will offer a window into the artist’s intense and idiosyncratic personal life as well as into her contributions through the ground-breaking work she produced over the course of more than six decades.

A memoir of Lee Krasner (1908–1984), groundbreaking American Abstract Expressionist artist, who produced a major body of work that influenced the evolution of contemporary art, especially that made by women.

Bridget Riley Lucy Askew, Cliff Lauson, Marina Warner, Eric de Chassey & Michael Bracewell This landmark book reflects on almost 70 years of works by Bridget Riley (b.1931), from some of her earliest to very recent projects, providing a unique record of the work of an artist still very much at the height of her powers. Essays from leading scholars and commentators on Riley’s work will make this title the authority on new thinking around Riley’s practice. In the last decade, Riley has continued to push her practice considerably. This book will explore these recent developments, as well as showcasing a number of very early drawings and paintings by Riley never previously published. It will also examine the notable influence that other artists such as Georges Seurat and Piet Mondrian have had on Riley’s work.

González, Picasso & Friends Laura Stamps, and others Spanish artist Julio González (1876-1942) is considered one of the most important and innovative sculptors of the first half of the twentieth century. This catalogue for a show at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague includes essays by noted art historians, archival photographs and materials, and illustrations of more than 100 works of art (20 by Picasso). The exhibition charts González’s personal evolution from traditional metalworker in his father’s workshop in Barcelona to avant-garde sculptor in Paris. It focuses on the relationship between González and Picasso, specifically, a 4-year collaboration that started in 1928, which played a decisive role in the development of González’s unique and innovative style. For Picasso, González’s expertise in metalwork opened doors to different forms of expression in sculpture. The accompanying texts also explore González’s relationships with other artists, including Brancusi, whose studio he worked in, Pablo Gargallo, and his son-in-law, Hans Hartung.

Olga Picasso Emilia Philippot, Joachim Pissarro & Bernard Ruiz-Picasso In light of a large selection of previously unpublished personal archives documents, photographs and films - this title explores Picasso’s ‘Olga period’ by contextualizing his work during this period and by questioning the contrast between the subject and its portrayal. A favorite model since their meeting in 1917, Olga Khokhlova, a Russian ballet dancer who married Picasso in July 1918, is the most represented female figure in the artist’s work of the late 1910s and 1920s. Picasso renders the ambiguity of his first wife, her beauty, her Ingres-like contors, and her deep, pensive, melancholy, in many of his most famous portraits. The exhibition that this book accompanies brings to light materials conserved by Olga’s family until recently, including memorabilia of her life as a dancer, photos of Picasso, their son Paul, their daily life together, and their travels to Barcelona, Naples, and Monte Carlo.

Conversation Pieces: The World of Bruegel Alexandra van Dongen, et al. In 2019, it will be 450 years since the death of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/28-1569). To mark this anniversary, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna is organizing the first ever retrospective of Bruegel’s work, while The World of Bruegel will be shown in the Bokrijk Open-Air Museum. The two institutions are joining forces to bring Bruegel’s masterpiece The Fight Between Carnival and Lent (1559) to life. In collaboration with the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam) and the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), the every day items that Bruegel depicted have been examined and interpreted from a contemporary perspective. The authors allow the objects to speak for themselves, preceded by an introductory essay by curator Sabine Pénot of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Just as Bruegel’s paintings were ‘conversation pieces’ in their day, intended to trigger a discussion between guests during dinners, this book presents a three-way conversation about the painting through Bruegel realia, in which art history (Katrien Lichtert), historical design (Alexandra van Dongen and Lucinda Timmermans) and literature (Abdelkader Benali) enter into a dialogue.

Examines the humor, imagery, and symbolism to be found in Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Fight Between Carnival and Lent.

Moon Photographing The Moon 1840-Now Maarten Dings & Joachim Naudts On July 21, 1969, the first man set foot on The Moon. When Neil Armstrong was asked if this made him feel big, he answered: “No, it made me feel really, really small.” 50 years later, this publication celebrates that special moment that put life on earth into a totally different perspective. It collects pictures of the world’s best photographers from the 1840s until today. Next to historical photographs and imagery printed in media, the publication features many artists that each in their own way reflect on this mystical celestial body, we call ‘moon’. The book shows the diversity of meanings of The Moon, it’s relation to mankind and to nature.

A photographic ode to The Moon, published on the occasion of MAAN/MOON at the Antwerp Museum of Photography (FOMU) (JulySeptember 2019).

Tom Slaughter Foreword by Glen Lowry Essays by David Marshall Grant, et al. Tom Slaughter’s (b. 1955) work, with its seemingly effortless whimsy rendered with a strong sense of line, color, and rhythm, has been compared to Matisse. His Pop-inflected drawings, prints, paintings, and illustrations convey his love of life as he relentlessly explored the complexities of the urban scene or the simple pleasures of boating. This publication is an extensive monograph of the artist’s enormous body of work that celebrates his enduring optimism, personal and artistic honesty, and charming brashness in a landscape of pure joy.

“The quality of freshness, the familiar world re-seen, from the water towers of New York City to the rural pleasures of boating, is the most immediately arresting aspect of Tom Slaughter’s art… Bold bright colors swiftly laid down echo with resonances: Léger and Stuart Davis, Raoul Dufy and Roy Lichtenstein.” - Henry Geldzahler, the first curator of twentieth-century art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Cabins Hidden Places, Stylish Spaces Almost everyone has indulged in the irresistible notion of carving out a romantic rural refuge in a typically rustic setting, beside a beach or meadow, in the mountains, or other pristine environments. This book brings together the infinite number of possibilities of beautiful and creative cabin designs set in idyllic locations where access to nature is unimpeded. There’s a growing trend for living in a small getaway, but that needn’t mean living in cramped, unimaginative spaces. This book showcases the challenges of how small floor plans and compact interiors can be overcome with inventive modern design solutions and the innovative use of technology. Once-basic structures are now evolving into fancy dwellings that offer off-grid living with low impact on the environment, all the while cocooning the occupants in differing levels of comfort, from rustic formats with basic necessities, to some which offer facilities for luxury living. From artist studios to alpine shelters, beachside shacks to rural retreats, this book is an endless source of inspiration for armchair architects and those seeking to create a peaceful sanctuary that fuses distilled ingenuity with eco-friendly style.

A Grid and a Conversation Morris Adjmi Architects Morris Adjmi Architects A Grid and a Conversation presents a survey of work by the New York City based firm Morris Adjmi Architects, well known for the Samsung building along the High Line and the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. With a rapidly rising profile and projects under construction in major cities across America, Morris Adjmi Architects is building on its previous ten-year partnership with the Italian architect, designer and scholar Aldo Rossi. From unexpected twists on classic building types like the all-glass interpretation of a cast-iron facade or the ghostly metallic duplicate of a brick warehouse, to the literally twisting steel tower that embodies the collision of Manhattan’s two primary street grids, this text traces the development and distillation of MA’s unique practice through key projects completed during its first 20 years. A Grid and a Conversation is interlaced with reflections from writers, scholars, and collaborators, including Diane Ghirardo, Bill Higgins, and Jimmy Stamp. These essays and conversations offer an insight into the array of influences that shape the work of Morris Adjmi Architects.

They Must Fall Muhammad Ali and the Men He Fought Photographs and Words by Michael Brennan, Introduction by Jimmy Breslin From award-wining photographer Michael Brennan comes a book dedicated to some of the most powerful and moving figures from the world of boxing. They Must Fall highlights not only Ali, the ‘Greatest of All Time’, but also the men he fought in the ring. Brennan located former opponents for a special feature that ran over several pages in Sports Illustrated, to discover for himself where these great athletes ended-up. Willi Besmanoff, who fought Ali in 1961, became a youth counsellor. George Logan, who lost in a technical knockout in 1962, became a school truancy officer. When Brennan took photos of Joe Frazier in 1979, he was performing as a cabaret singer. Frazier fought Ali three times, winning the first fight in a famed Madison Square Garden match in 1971 (although he later lost in 1974 and 1975). Buster Mathis, who lost to Ali in 1971, went on to load trucks. George Foreman reinvented himself as a roadside preacher in 1978, after losing to Ali in a knockout in the 8th round in 1974. This unique book flicks through Brennan’s archive with particular focus on the ‘70s. It includes several never-before-seen photos. With text by Michael Brennan, including his original 1981 Sports Illustrated essay, this is an eye-opening account of Ali and the men who challenged him.

Assembly of the Exalted The Tibetan Shrine Room from the Alice S. Kandell Collection Donald S. Lopez Jr & Rebecca Bloom Photography: John Bigelow Taylor & Dianne Dubler Assembly of the Exalted presents some 50 pieces from the remarkable collection of Alice S. Kandell. The works, dating from the late 13th century to the early 20th, include great masterpieces and emblematic examples of Tibetan Buddhist art. They are all presented here as the constituents of a Tibetan Buddhist shrine. Shrines, both modest and grand, are the primary sites of Tibetan Buddhist practice, whether it be reciting scriptures, performing rituals, saying prayers, or engaging in meditation. The introductory essays thus focus on the Tibetan Buddhist shrine, describing its evolution over the history of Buddhism, its special role in Tibet, and how the pieces in the Kandell Collection came to be assembled and displayed in shrines at institutions across America. Illustrated with vivid photography, forty short essays, each centered on a single work or set of objects, describe the pieces in terms of their importance for the practice of Buddhism, highlighting the many essential functions of Tibetan Buddhist art within the space of a shrine.

The Farnese Cup Valeria Sampaolo, Luigi Spina Thought to have been made in Hellenist Egypt sometime between 300 BC and 30 BC, the Farnese Cup is the largest cameo hard stone cup to have survived from the ancient world. Whatever its inherent meaning, the piece itself is commanding, requiring a close-up view of each hand-carved detail, the balance and impact of the whole, and the subtle variations in the material itself. This book provides that close-up in a series of photographs and varying perspectives that pull back from the delicate infinitesimal cut to the magnificent, perfect whole.

Georgian Jewellery 1714-1830 Ginny Redington Dawes with Olivia Collings Georgian Jewellery is a celebration of the style and excellence of the eighteenth century, and of the ingenuity that produced such a wealth of fabulous jewelry. Heavy academic tomes have already been written about the period, but this book examines it in a more colorful and accessible way. It aims to show that Georgian jewelry is not only the stuff of museums and safe boxes, but also wearable – as elegant and fashionable today as it was 200 years ago. Much disparate information about the jewelry has been gathered together and the period is brought alive by portraits and character sketches of famous Georgians in their finery, fashion tips, gossip, and some rather outrageous cartoons of the time, as well as fascinating recently discovered facts. With information on how to identify, buy and repair pieces, this sumptuously illustrated volume contains the largest single catalogue of 18th Century jewelry.

Asian Chic How Japanese and Chinese Textiles Influenced Fashion During the Roaring Twenties Estelle Niklès van Osselt European fashion was profoundly influenced in the early decades of the 20th century by the style, textiles, patterns and color combinations of Asian clothing. The discovery of the kimono, in particular, captivated the great couturiers of the period. It enabled adventurous women in the Roaring Twenties to cast out their corsets and social straightjackets, while offering a new, daring kind of elegance with exotic overtones. From the meeting of these two sartorial cultures has sprung an exhibition and this catalog, in which the drawings of Paris fashion designers are compared with examples of contemporary East-Asian textiles from the Baur Foundation in Geneva.

Martin Szekely. Construction Constance Rubini & Cecil Balmond French designer Martin Szekely’s (b. 1956) enigmatic furniture and objects are the result of formal structural challenges, observation, and analysis. Experimenting with both new and traditional materials, he approaches each project as a new inquiry into the essence of the built world. For Szekely, building is the very essence of the designer’s profession. What is built – which is the designer’s domain unlike the artist for whom ideas suffice – calls on the history of structures and the technologies that underlie them. This catalog, for a show of forty pieces at the Musée des Arts décoratifs et du Design de Bordeaux, highlights Szekely’s elegant mix of craftsmanship and high tech, raw materiality and high culture.

As a result of Cuba’s limited trade and imports, a striking and admirable DIY (do-it-yourself) attitude has cropped up throughout the country. This mentality exists well beyond pastimes and craft projects; it is simply a part of day-to-day existence and a testament to the self-reliance, resilience and creativity that permeates the culture. More than a tome on DIY solutions, the book offers an inside look into everyday life on the island. As such, Made in Cuba is not only a source of inspiration for creative professionals but also a personal guide to the country and its people.

Conran/Quant Swinging London – A Lifestyle Revolution Geoffrey Rayner & Richard Chamberlain Revisiting London at the height of the Swinging Sixties, this book provides vital context for two of the biggest and boldest names in contemporary fashion: Mary Quant, alleged mother of the miniskirt, and Terence Conran, the entrepreneur behind the new wave of ‘lifestyle’ stores. Friends, associates and allies in design, Quant and Conran stood at the head of an informal but influential bohemian group who steered the rudder of style during the Pop era. ‘The Chelsea Set’ resist definition; there was no comprehensive members list. Conran/Quant explores the contributions of designers and artists from Laura and Bernard Ashley to Eduardo Paolozzi, Nigen Henderson and Alexander Plunket Greene, all of whom were essential generators of Sixties Style.

With a focus on Mary Quant and Terence Conran, this book pays homage to ‘the Chelsea Set’, a bohemian, progressive clique that would change the course of sixties contemporary design.

History

The Queen’s Castle at Windsor Fortress, Palace, Home Elizabeth Newbery Windsor is the oldest inhabited castle in the world – for over 900 years it’s been home to kings and queens, including the current British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. This colorful activity book reveals the secrets of the world’s oldest inhabited castle and the Kings and Queens who have lived there. Over time it has been a royal fortress, a King Arthur-inspired palace, a Victorian Christmas wonderland and home to The Queen (and her corgis)! There’s also a mini palace inside – Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House has hot and cold running water, two working lifts and even flushing lavatories!

Treasures of Westminster Abbey Tony Trowles This new edition traces the Abbey’s history stretching back over a thousand years. Founded as a Benedictine monastery in the mid-tenth century, it is the coronation church where British monarchs have been crowned amid great splendor since 1066. The present church, begun by Henry III in 1245, is a treasure house of architectural and artistic achievement.

Jousting and feasting, deaths and dungeons, childhood games and celebrity events – lively illustrations and fun facts bring the Castle’s colorful history to life.

Ranging from the thirteenth-century shrine of St Edward and the Renaissance splendour of Henry VII’s Lady Chapel, to the literary memorials of Poets’ Corner and the statues of twentieth-century martyrs on the Abbey’s west front, this book describes the stained glass, furniture, sculpture, textiles, wallpaintings and many other historic artifacts found within this remarkable church.

Dangerous Illusions How Religion Deprives Us of Happiness Vitaly Malkin Based on 10 years of dedicated research, Dangerous Illusions is a battle cry for the human race to throw off religion in favor of logic and reason. In this committed and passionate book, author Vitaly Malkin – a philanthropist, business man and investor – argues for a radical shift in humanity’s thinking about religion; that reason and religion cannot co-exist, and that mankind will only be truly happy if we are able to shake off the illusions of religion in order to live a life more rooted in the present. Dangerous Illusions sets out to explore the irrational demands that religion makes of man and asks the reader to question what benefit these acts offer human beings in this life. Malkin scrutinizes topics such as suffering and evil, pleasure and asceticism, sex and celibacy, and circumcision and excision, through the lens of the three major world monotheistic religions – Christianity, Islam and Judaism. In doing so, the book fearlessly refutes our most careless beliefs, encouraging us to be more aware of the dangers religions pose to our society and, even to change our intellectual practices altogether.

Duffy Chris Duffy As famous as the stars he photographed, Brian Duffy defined the image of Swinging London in the 1960s. Together with David Bailey and Terence Donovan, Duffy is recognized as one of the innovators of ‘documentary’ fashion photography, a style that revolutionized the industry. Their attitude and aesthetic iconified the scene, birthing the cult of the fashion photographer and inspiring the famous film Blow-Up (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1966). Duffy’s most famous photograph is the ‘Mona Lisa of pop’, the cover of Bowie’s ‘Aladdin Sane’. He collaborated with the artist over eight years and exerted a direct influence on the numerous reinventions of Bowie’s image. It is fitting, therefore, that this new edition should expand on their work together with new images. This new edition of Duffy also features other, new images from the photographer’s archive, depicting both star and photographer in their prime.

New expanded edition celebrating the career of one of the top British fashion photographers from the ‘60s-‘70s.

Hard Rock Hotel Tony Barrell With a finger on the pulse of the twentieth century music scene – tapping along to the beat, in fact – the Hard Rock Hotel in London, previously known as the Cumberland, was second home to some of the brightest stars on record. Buddy Holly stayed here during his only British tour, less than a year before his tragic death. The Rolling Stones paid Bo Diddley a visit in his suite. Jimi Hendrix gave his final interviews from the Cumberland, named as the place of residence on his death certificate. And, most infamously, it was on the fifth floor of the Cumberland Hotel where a besotted fan with a revolver held Shirley Bassey hostage in 1957. From Bob Dylan to Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross, from Little Richard to Madonna and A-Ha, each suite is steeped in stories.

The Isle of Dogs Before the Big Money Mike Seaborne

Miami Beach 1988-1998 Barry Lewis

Berlin Nights Christian Reister

His black-and-white photographs reveal an eerily desolate landscape, which would soon be home to financial heavyweights and epic skyscrapers like Canary Wharf. They show an area of East London now almost beyond recognition, just before the money moved in.

Each Christmas between 1988 and 1998, photographer Barry Lewis traveled to South Beach, Miami, to trade the harsh London winter for a tropical paradise. There he photographed the diverse (and eccentric) people who made up the community: fashionistas, newly-arrived Cubans (following the Meriel exodus in 1980), Jewish retirees from New York, drag queens and the gay population who flocked to ultra-cool Ocean Drive for the party scene. Lewis’ images capture the vibrancy of an area coming back to life after years of crime, drugs, and violence.

Christian Reister’s black-and-white photographs capture the surreal, threatening and ethereal character of Berlin at night. As an insider, the German photographer scans the city for unstaged, unexpected moments and seeks out the strange night-time energy of a place and its people. See Berlin as it comes alive after dark and get lost in the underground scene of Europe’s most exciting city for alternative nightlife.

East London Photo Stories One Neighbourhood, 14 Photographers Text by Rachel Segal Hamilton, Various photographers

Paradise Street The Lost Art of Playing Outside Vintage Britain Half a century ago, ‘playing out’ was expected of British kids who came together, in all weathers, to run, jump, skip, swing, kick, fight and climb – usually unsupervised. With growing fears over children’s vulnerability in modern society much of this has been lost. Paradise Street brings together the work of many photographers including Shirley Baker, Martin O’Neill and Paul Kaye, most of whom lived and worked among the people they photographed. Spanning the early ‘30s to the late 1970s, these images are a celebration of community, trust and friendships, showing how attitudes towards children’s safety have shifted over the 20th century.

Migration as AvantGarde Michael Danner With his new book of photographs, Migration as Avant-Garde, Michael Danner delivers a moving, critical, and thoughtprovoking contribution to the current public debate on immigration. Danner has photographed the people who migrate from their homes, but also “those that influence, prevent, channel, or impact a migrant’s humanity”, including border police and agents of the state. In addition to these portraits, his book includes archival images of refugees and satellite imagery from crisis regions. Quotes from Hannah Arendt’s 1943 essay We Refugees, which was also the inspiration for the title, are interspersed through the book. The events that Arendt wrote about more than seventy years ago – giving up one’s home, one’s friends, family, and language – are more pressing today than ever before.

Photo Peshawar Sean Foley and Lukas Birk Photo Peshawar delves into the largely unexplored culture of photography in the Pakistani frontier city of Peshawar from the 1940s to the present day. Photography in Peshawar has historically and culturally found itself caught between the creative and conservative forces of both India and Afghanistan. Variously borne of British rule, the Partition of India, war in neighbouring Afghanistan, the rise of the Taliban, local tribal law, a historical prohibition on image-making in Islam, the practice of purdah (the veiling of females in public), and the regional movie industry, there is a tangible stress between the practice of photography as it is pursued and the culture in which it is lived. With nearly one hundred and fifty photographs, each more stunning than the last, ‘photography as craft is what this splendid volume examines.

Bas Meeuws. Flower Pieces Maartje van den Heuvel His photographs are of an old-fashioned beauty and at the same time radically contemporary. Flower by flower Bas Meeuws composes his floral still lifes, but digitally: the bases for Meeuws’ monumental works are digital photographs of individual flowers. They allude to the Dutch masters of the seventeenth century with their sense of luxury and their eye for the ephemeral. Meeuws strikes a chord in the art world with his flower still lifes. He is represented by Dutch, American, Taiwanese and Indian galleries and exhibits from Amsterdam to New Delhi.

What the Fuck! Edited by Luster A collection of astonishing photos from around the world, which the editors stumbled upon during their many hours on the World Wide Web. The book is a cross between a cabinet of curiosities and a documentary on the human species, offering a unique insight into contemporary amateur photography. Photos like these are avidly shared on social media and this book makes you think about the how, where and why of this phenomenon. They are often accompanied by the acronym ‘WTF’ on social media and websites, reflecting the incomprehension of anyone who gazes at these photos as well as the uneasy feeling that overcomes the ‘voyeur’ when he sees them. All these pictures combined emphasize the astounding pace at which countless anonymous spectators are exposed to these extraordinary images, and how the extraordinary increasingly becomes the norm to which we have all become accustomed.

Milan: On the Road Edited by Matteo Moscatelli In recent years, Milan has become a metropolis involved in transformations that are well worthy of interest for the architectural and urbanistic experiments that have been carried out. The complex dialectics between innovation and respect for the existing urban form is the distinctive characteristic of the city: recovery of downgraded neighborhoods, redevelopment of decommissioned industrial zones, technological experimentation, and vertical development are the aspects that mark Milan as a strongly contemporary city. As Milan: On the Road guides the reader through the wide range of contemporary architectural projects, it emphasizes the unique nature of its complex character.

Naples: On the Road Edited by Andrea Nastri and Giuliana Vespere The influence of Anjou and Aragon, and the traces left by Bourbon, Hapsburg and Napoleonic domination have made Naples a treasure-trove of different styles and periods, rich in original imperfections and extravagance that deserve to be discovered and enjoyed. This guide is aimed at illustrating the structure and unusual aspects of a city in constant artistic ferment, where architecture ranges from ancient aristocratic palaces to the modern futuristic skyscrapers of the business district, the Art Stations of the Naples Metro, the small Art Nouveau houses in the poorer areas in the historic center; architecture that exists layer upon layer, spreading outwards to the city boundaries.

Barcelona: On the Road Edited by Chiara Ingrosso When we think of Barcelona, the eclectic art of Antoni GaudĂ immediately springs to mind. It is present in every corner of the city. Or we think of the Olympic Ring with the tower designed by Santiago Calatrava; but these are only two aspects of the exquisite beauty of the Catalan capital which has been able to blend old and new in a unique and unpredictable way. The traditional Gothic architecture has a discreet historical flavor, while the buildings that have appeared in the past 10 years reflect modern art trends like Cubism, Neo-plasticism, and Futurism. Named the European capital of innovation in 2014, the city boasts distinctive urban planning because of the unusual bevelled corners on city blocks that provide more open street intersections, with extra space for outdoor cafĂŠs and seating that give the city its particularly sociable community atmosphere.

London Peculiars A Handbook for Offbeat Explorers Peter Ashley A peculiar can be defined as something that ‘has eccentric or individual variations to the general or predicted pattern’. And, as it turns out, London is overflowing with them. This pocket-sized book moves from the tent-shaped tomb designed for Victorian explorer Sir Richard Burton by his widow, Isabel Arundel Gordon; to what may be the last surviving porter’s rest in London; to a stone niche by a long-demolished foundling hospital where almost 15, 000 infants were discarded over the course of the 18th century. Sometimes heroic, sometimes tragic, often amusing and always unexpected, these so-called ‘peculiars’ bring color to the fabric of London. Whether you are a lifelong resident or a visitor passing through, London Peculiars is guaranteed to lead you on an adventure.

Vinyl London Tom Greig

Rock ‘n’ Roll London Tony Barrell

London’s record shop scene is at its most vital and buoyant point since the 1990s, following a resurgence of interest in vinyl over recent years. Tom Greig, who has immersed himself in the world of London’s record shops for close to two decades, profiles and tells the story of 60 distinctive independent record stores, selling both new and used vinyl. It is at once a practical guide, featuring maps, addresses, opening times and stock information, and an attractive visual celebration of London’s record shops.

London teemed with top-rated singers and musicians during the ‘60s and ‘70s, whether they were squatting, playing gigs or investing in multi-million pound mansions. Follow McCartney and Co. to the quiet flat on Green Street that was their refuge before the Beatlemaniacs sought them out. Wind back time to when Loog Oldham locked Mick and Keith in their flat and demanded they compose a song. From the zany to the tragic – it was in St Mary Abbot’s Hospital, Kensington where Jimi Hendrix was pronounced dead – this is a guidebook like no other, a pilgrimage dedicated to the rock ‘n’ roll greats.

The book is organized geographically, and contains the following chapters; Soho; North; East; South; West; Suburbs; Markets; Vinyl Cafes.

England & Wales England and Wales offer an abundance of cultural and natural experiences – for both the tourist and for the native. England is a country steeped in impressive history, and has a past that still influences the present. Occupied for at least 5,000 years, no other country in Europe has quite so many mighty castles, monumental medieval cathedrals, and remarkable palaces. Nature and the countryside have plenty to offer: rolling hills, mysterious moors, spectacular cliff-lined coasts, and more than 30 ‘Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty’; prehistoric monuments abound too. Vibrant cities such as Liverpool, Manchester, Oxford and of course London, stand out with their mix of modern and ancient architecture and exciting cultural life. Neighboring Wales also boasts plenty of variety: from an epic 1,680 miles of coastline, to the snow-covered mountains of Snowdonia, its highest summit; from inviting small villages, in between imposing fortresses, to three National Parks that protect an impressive 20% of Wales. This book is a celebration of both countries.

Here are Homo Securitatis Inferioris (security agents who look like they might run the other way in an emergency) and the Homo Amantus Vestimentatis Identicus (a couple who think they’re really twins). To strengthen powers of observation, every example is awarded a number of points – the rarer the subspecies the more points awarded. With Marilyn An Evening 1961 Douglas Kirkland

Coco Chanel Three Weeks/1962 Douglas Kirkland

“For 30 years Douglas Kirkland has made his living by doing what some photographers might gladly do without charge: taking pictures of glamorous celebrities. In creating the kind of poster-perfect images publicity agents dream of – Marilyn Monroe clad only in silk sheets, for example – he has few peers.” – Andy Grunberg, The New York Times

“Each image makes you feel as though you are right there, experiencing this privileged world!” – Eat Love Savor No stranger to photographing some of the world’s most beloved icons, Douglas Kirkland fixed his lens on Coco Chanel for twenty-one days in 1962.

On assignment for Look magazine to photograph the movie star in 1961, Douglas Kirkland photographed Marilyn Monroe and made history for both himself and for the actress. Working in the intimate confines of an unmade bed, the result is a series of some of the most spontaneous and flirtatious photographs ever taken of this film legend. They made the photographer’s career and added a new facet to that of the actress.

This collection of never-before-seen photographs is as staggeringly beautiful as it is an impassioned portraiture, shedding new light on one of the great stories of the modern age. Not just a record of Kirkland’s impressions of ‘Mademoiselle,’ this book also features a compelling foreword by literary giant Judith Thurman, who poignantly contextualizes the relationship between Kirkland and Chanel, making this book every bit as incomparable as Mademoiselle herself.

This catalogue shows how Calder’s work emerged from expectations of change in American popular culture. The catalogue, with twelve essays from major contributors, examines how Calder, found techniques and inspiration in many disciplines and their development: technology, engineering, architecture, physics, and astronomy among others. Fernando Costa Fernando Costa and JohanFrederik Hel Guedj This is the first book dedicated to Fernando Costa, an eclectic, self-taught artist, born in France to a family that arrived in the country on foot from Portugal while fleeing the dictatorship of Salazar in 1970. Costa dissects enamelled street signs, cuts them up, smoothes them off, and reassembles the pieces by welding them onto large metal plaques to create works of extraordinary originality. The result is striking, as shown in this colourful monograph.

Pont-Aven School Cradle of the Modern Sensibility Texts by Jean-Marie Rouart, Estelle Guille des Buttes and Adrien Goetz Pont-Aven has lent its name to one of the most famous schools of painting in modern art and is now automatically associated with Paul Gauguin and Émile Bernard. In 1888, in this Breton village in southern Finistère, the two painters set about inventing the features of a new style of painting: Synthetism.

Traveling with Cortés and Pizarro Discovering Fine PreColumbian Art Texts by Stuart Handler, Hugh Thomson & Joanne Stuhr. Photographs by Edward Parrinello Along with 150 full-color glossy illustrations of the objects, a PreColumbian art lover and prestigious curator journey into a fine art collection, describing the rich cultural context and artistic merits of each work.

Whether small in size or imposing triptychs, the works of Fernando Costa achieve a rare feat: imbuing metal with emotion.

This new book reveals to a wider public the important collection that Alexandre Mouradian amassed in only a few years. The collection reflects its creator’s great passion for the artists of the Pont-Aven group, as well as others in Brittany and beyond who embraced the new ideas of Bernard and Gauguin without ever losing their individuality.

It is rare that a collector takes such a personal, descriptive part in publishing his treasure trove, but in this lavishly illustrated book, Stuart Handler describes why he gathered Pre-Columbian art, what attracted him to the individual pieces, and what artistic attributes make these objects outstanding works.
