The Architecture of Sir Edwin Lutyens: Country Houses
A.S.G. Butler, with George Stewart and Christopher Hussey
Edwin Lutyens, one of the most famous architectural names of the 20th century, died in 1944. As a memorial, three large volumes of his drawings and photographs were commissioned from the thousands found in his office, and were published by Country Life. All three volumes will be republished in 2023. The first volume contains his own plans, elevations and copious details of the finest examples of his domestic buildings, on which his huge reputation principally rests. The book embodies the quintessence of the man and his work; the variety of style and design seen in the houses brings together in one volume the many strands of Lutyen’s fertile mind. Two further volumes will include his corporate and public buildings. The genius of Lutyens is now universally recognized. In the work featured in this book, we can now see not just the professionalism of a great architect, but also the loving care with which he set down the most minute detail, with the result that this is one of the few books in existence that can be used to provide working drawings.

Bauer and Dean Publishers 9.25 x 12.25in. 400pp., 176 col., 336 b.&w. March 2023 $75.00/CDN$97.50 Hardback
In his latest contribution to America’s architectural record, Michael C. Kathrens gives house enthusiasts a superb and visually compelling account of the incredibly rich period of Newport’s luxurious 19th century summer ‘cottages’. Between 1835, when the first private house was single built exclusively for seasonal use, and 1890, scores of magnificent homes were commissioned by a burgeoning summer colony whose members were among America’s wealthiest and most prominent families, including the Schermerhorns, Lorillards, Astors, Goelets, and Joneses. The luxury and splendor of their homes, many designed on a grand scale, often rivaled that of Newport’s later Gilded Age mansions. Showcasing new architectural expressions unique to America, including the Stick and Shingle styles, these exceptional cottages displayed the mastery of their architects, whether nationally renowned firms like Peabody & Stearns and McKim, Mead & White, or local talents such as George Champlin Mason and Dudley Newton. Stunning archival and newly commissioned photography, architectural renderings, and floor plans supplement the text to fully convey this remarkable architectural legacy. Wood in Contemporary Architecture
Edited by The Images Publishing GroupBorn out of traditional, rustic constructions, wood has judiciously made the transition to being among the top in the list of high-tech building materials. Adding to wood’s well-known ecological and building biology aspects, innovative timber construction technology now extends a great deal of design freedom as well, being extremely precise. Wood’s ability to enrich even the most futuristic, contemporary architecture, to impart warmth and tasteful classicism is not unknown. Using wood in combination with, or in contrast to, other materials such as metal, glass, bricks, or exposed concrete is fast becoming a design option that architects and designers are increasingly choosing for their designs. Their willingness to experiment and be bold with design is evident in the material selection, interior appointments, and aesthetic finishes of their architectural creations. Wood in Contemporary Architecture offers a unique overview of wood as a construction material for residential buildings worldwide, and also introduces architects, interior designers, and builders to the diverse characteristics of contemporary timber architecture.
This book offers a unique overview of wood as the main construction material for residential buildings worldwide, and introduces architects, interior designers, and builders to the diversity of contemporary timber architecture.
The Bridges of Robert Adam A Fanciful and Picturesque Tour
Benjamin Riley
The bridge has always stood as a transitional structure - not purely a work of engineering, nor simply a work of architecture. Its functional requirements are more stringent than those of the average building; it not only must stand up; it must stand up, support those who cross it, and effectively span the space over which it stands. As Samuel Johnson said, “the first excellence of a bridge is strength … for a bridge that cannot stand, however beautiful, will boast its beauty but a little while.” The Scottish architect Robert Adam (1728-92) understood these precepts well, continually building bridges that were not just structurally sound, but also aesthetically pleasing. Unlike his contemporaries, Adam did not view bridges as mere skeletons upon which to apply ornament. Rather, he sought to achieve architectural totality, incorporating his bridge designs into greater architectural programs, thereby producing aesthetically pleasing and contextually specific designs.

Courtyard Houses of India Yatin Pandya
In ancient Indian sciences, the courtyard assumes the central position as Brahmasthana, the nucleus of the living environment. In this book, the author traces the metaphysical, mythical, socio-cultural, environmental and spatial roles of the courtyard in the domestic architecture of India — from early civilization and Vedic times to Islamic and colonial influences. This volume documents traditional and vernacular courtyard dwelling types across India within diverse climatic, cultural as well as geographic zones of the country. It then discerns the spatial elements constituting the court, and the arts and crafts as well as the elements integral to the court. Illustrated with splendid photographs and representative drawings, the book attempts to understand the presence and resolution, continued use and adaptation as well as the diverse interpretations and abstractions of the courtyard.

Basquiat x Warhol Paintings 4 Hands
“I draw first, and then I paint like Jean-Michel. I think the paintings we make together are better when we don’t know who has done what” - Andy Warhol.
Between 1984 and 1985, Jean-Michel Basquiat (19601988) and Andy Warhol (1928-1987) created around 160 paintings together in tandem, à quatre mains, including some of the most remarkable works produced during their respective careers. Keith Haring (1958-1990), who witnessed their friendship and collaboration production, would go on to speak of a “conversation occurring through painting, instead of words,” and of two minds merging to create a “third distinctive and unique mind.”
Accompanying an exhibition at Fondation Louis Vuitton, this book illustrates more than 100 paintings jointly signed by the two artists.
Published to accompany an exhibition at Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, from April to August, 2023.
Mandala – In Search of Enlightenment Sacred
Geometry in the World’s Spiritual Arts
Peter Van Ham
Hailing from the cultural realm of India, the mandala signifies in its original sense a sacred circle. It serves as a meditation aid and at the same time reflects an ancient symbolism of strictly geometric basic forms accompanied by an interpretation of its sacred content. As an expression of the awareness of higher affinities, the symmetrically arranged geometry can be found in a variety of pictorial works and the architecture of various epochs and cultural realms, for example in medieval book illumination, the floor plan of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, in Kazimir Malevich’s Black Square, or in various objects of the indigenous peoples of Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. Based on these and other masterpieces from renowned museums and private collections and illustrated in fascinating photographs of unique buildings and rituals, this publication offers an impressive first analysis of the phenomenon of sacred geometry in art and architecture and their underlying ideologies.

The Riace Bronzes
9783897906747 - German
Across time and cultures and with photographs of masterpieces from around the world, this publication offers a first analysis of the phenomenon of sacred geometry in art and architecture and their underlying ideologies.
Luigi Spina, Carmelo Malacrino
This publication celebrates the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Riace Bronzes. In it, Luigi Spina’s photographic research accompanies the texts written by Carmelo Malacrino. The photographer here develops a continued narrative, offering a direct comparison between the two sculptures, identified as A and B, exploring interpretations of the physicality of the two subjects as well as the three-dimensional quality of the bronze bodies, often concealed by the two-dimensional appearance of photographic images. Carmelo Malacrino analyzes these famous fifth-century BC masterpieces from two points of view: as ancient works of art on the one hand, and considering their significance for contemporary culture on the other.

Labyrinth Knossos Myth and Reality
Andrew Shapland
Crete was famous in Greek myth as the location of the labyrinth in which the Minotaur was confined in a palace at somewhere called ‘Knossos’. The name Knossos had survived – but it was nothing but a sprinkling of houses and farmland so they looked elsewhere. Finally, in 1878, a Cretan archeologist, Minos Kalokairinos discovered evidence of a Bronze Age palace. British Archaeologist and then Keeper of the Ashmolean Arthur Evans came out to visit and was fascinated by the site. Between 1900 and 1931 Evans uncovered the remains of the huge palace which he felt must be the that of King Minos. Evans’s interpretations of his finds were accurate in some places, but deeply flawed in others. The Evans Archive, held by the Ashmolean, records his finds, theories and (often contentious) reconstructions.

Museum Secrets Hidden Stories from the Ashmolean Lucie Dawkins
In December 2020, spirits were low. The first tentative visitors had only just made it back through the doors of the Ashmolean after months of isolation, only for another lockdown to come crashing into view. The galleries went dark for a second time in a year. There’s something uncanny about standing in the Museum when it’s empty of visitors. You can sense human stories all around you, clamoring to be told to… noone. So, a change of tack was needed. If we couldn’t get people into the building, we could get the stories out. The result was a podcast, Museum Secrets, which you can find on the Ashmolean’s website. This book contains the highlights. These are stories you won’t find on the labels. These are stories of the human experiences hidden in the Museum’s cases and frames. They are stories that cheered us up when we needed it most.

British Surrealism
Dr David Boyd Haycock, Sacha Llewellyn, Kirstie MeehanSurrealism was one of the most influential avant-garde movements of the 20th century. ‘Discovered’ in 1920 by the French poet André Breton, it emerged from the horrifying irrationality of the First World War, the revolutionary nonsense of Dadaist art and the penetrating theories of Freudian psychoanalysis. With its unique history of outlandish creativity and its soft spot for the absurd, Britain was a perfect breeding ground for the surreal. Produced in conjunction with Dulwich Picture Gallery’s British Surrealism exhibition in 2020, this beautifully produced publication will surprise the reader with its unique, imaginative take on what an exhibition catalog can be, including interactive pages interspersed amongst essays by David Boyd Haycock, Kirstie Meehan and Sacha Llewellyn.

Oriental Dreams Mathias Ary Jan, Claire
Maingonthe exhibition Roman Landscapes: Visions of Nature and Myth from Rome and Pompeii at the San Antonio Museum of Art (24 February - 21 May 2023).
This beautifully illustrated book, with over 300 color reproductions, showcases many of the greatest masterpieces of 19th century Orientalist art. During this period, colonization, and a revolution in means of transportation allowed artists to visit countries from North Africa to the Middle East that had previously been relatively inaccessible. The patterns, colors, and light of this region influenced artists such as Delacroix, Decamps, Berchère, Bridgman, Ziem, Gérôme, Corrodi, Dinet, Matisse, Majorelle and many others. Upon returning to Europe, these artists captured the atmosphere of these distant and exotic lands in painted scenes of daily life and wrote memoirs of their travels. Some returned to settle there, including painters like Dinet, who spent a large part of his life in Algeria, and Majorelle, known as the ‘painter of Marrakech.’

The Meaning of the Earth Wolf Jahn
The Meaning of the Earth offers a retrospective on the lives and work of the relentlessly controversial artists, placing them within the context of twentieth century British culture. Wolf Jahn tells the story of how Gilbert & George found their identity in opposition to pervasive ideas around social conformity and religion after meeting in 1967.
The artists staged an internal revolution, mining their psyches to create visionary and unwaveringly modern art. The ‘two people but one artist’ ask the questions that gnaw at us all: ‘Where do we come from?’, ‘Who are we?’ and ‘Where are we going?’ The book meditates on the artists’ role in this century, connecting their beginnings as Living Sculptures to their pictorial work of today.

Dark Shadow
Gilbert & George
First published in 1974, Dark Shadow is a living sculpture book, the ‘result of our past three years of earnest daily thoughts, shadows, deeds, cares and pleasures.’ Written by the artists, Dark Shadow offers a unique perspective on their work and an insight into their minds. Like their art, Gilbert & George’s writing is irreverent, rebellious, fantastical, often funny and deeply poetic. Each book is a piece of art in itself; uniquely bound in hand-marbled cloth created by the pair. It includes original photographs of Gilbert & George, their famous home in Spitalfields and paintings. As is emblazoned on the cover, Dark Shadow is a continuation of their lifelong agenda ‘Art for All.’

Gilbert & George: Paradisical Pictures
Michael Bracewell
Writer, novelist and cultural commentator Michael Bracewell explores the paradise behind the PARADISICAL PICTURES; the 35 artworks made by Gilbert & George in 2019. The paintings are fantastical, allegorical, narrative, representational, psychedelic, absurdist, modern yet archaic, surrealist-grotesque, inflected with both tragedy and comedy, filled with pathos, touchingly eloquent of human frailty, age and exhaustion. The art of Gilbert & George is a visionary art, above all – reports from a cosmic journey through life that begins on the streets of London. The PARADISICAL PICTURES suggest a chapter in a story that has been unfolding before them and will continue beyond them.
Wolf Jahn is deeply knowledgeable about Gilbert & George’s work and practice, having written extensively about them over the past 40 years. The cover and printed edges of the book are illustrated with original artwork created by Gilbert & George especially for the book.

IN A DREAM YOU CLIMB THE STAIRS
Nikita Gale
Chisenhale Gallery launches the second title in its Chisenhale Books series, Nikita Gale: IN A DREAM YOU CLIMB THE STAIRS. Marking the finale of Gale’s Chisenhale exhibition, her first artist’s book contains an intergenerational conversation with conceptual artist Barbara Kruger and a short meditation by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Hilton Als. Through the lens of a multifaceted practice, Gale examines themes of invisibility and audibility, interrogating the dynamic between performer and spectator, structure, and decay. Produced with great care, this extraordinary book is reflective of the artist’s practice. Four visual essays, hand-annotated by Gale –‘Absence’, ‘Ruin’, ‘Silence’, ‘Dog’ – explore themes central to the work. Nikita Gale: IN A DREAM YOU CLIMB THE STAIRS deploys throw-outs, gatefolds, five different types of papers, and a subtly disruptive design to delve into Nikita Gale’s art.

The Art of Alchemy
From the Middle Ages to Modern Times
David BrafmanAlchemists are notorious for attempting to synthesize gold. Their goals, however, were far more ambitious: to transform and bend nature to the will of an industrious human imagination. For scientists, philosophers, and artists alike, alchemy seemed to hold the key to unlocking the secrets of creation. Alchemists’ efforts to discover the way the world is made have had an enduring impact on global artistic practice and expression. Concoctions produced in the world’s alchemy labs include inks, dyes, and oil paints; cements and ceramic glazing; dazzling effects in metalwork and glass - and the modern media which now claim boasting rights as the ultimate chemical mirrors of nature: photography and the liquid crystal displays of the digital world. The field spurred on advancements in the visual arts and aids to human health. Ancient Chinese alchemists also unleashed the black magic of gunpowder onto the world of warfare.

With more than 120 exceptional works of art in dialogue with some of the great works of the early 20th century abstraction movement, it addresses the major stages that punctuated the links between Picasso’s work and the history of abstract art. It covers the period from the first Cubist experiments of 1907, carried out simultaneously with Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, to his later work, which is sometimes situated on the borders of gestural painting.

The Riddles of Ukiyo-e Women and Men in Japanese Prints
Chris Uhlenbeck, Jim Dwinger, Josephine SmitWomen and men – strong, proud, tragic or beautiful – from the heyday (1765–1865) of Japanese printmaking are this book’s subject. It seeks to dig below the surface of the prints to describe the often-subtle iconography employed in these masterful creations by the most famous artists of their time. It begins with Suzuki Harunobu’s subdued and introverted scenes of women seated on verandas. The book then moves on to the spectacular ‘big face’ (okubi-e) portraits of prostitutes and Kabuki actors by artists like Kitagawa Utamaro, Toshusai Sharaku and Utagawa Kunimasa. Each print is explored in the finest detail in order to explain the riddles of Ukiyo-e: the intriguing and captivating mode of visual expression that would have such a profound influence on Western art.

Breaking the Rules Paul Wonner and Theophilus Brown
Scott A. Shields, Matt GonzalezIn reaction to the widespread pursuit of Abstract Expressionism in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Paul Wonner and William “Theophilus” Brown were among the artists in the San Francisco Bay Area who began to re-engage with the visible world, applying the gestural style of action painting to depictions of people, landscapes, and still lifes. Together, the couple aligned themselves with this new direction and became leading practitioners of the style known today as Bay Area Figuration. Over time, both artists’ works became less gestural and more overtly representational. Brown became known for his psychologically evocative landscapes with classic bathers, as well as for his lonely urban scenes. Wonner received greatest acclaim for his “baroque” still lifes laden with everyday objects, animals, and flowers. Published to accompany the most comprehensive exhibition of the artists’ work ever mounted, this exquisite publication offers an in-depth study of these trailblazing artists.
Exhibition at the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA (30 April-27 August 2023) travels to the Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach, CA (14 October 2023-7 Jan 2024); and the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Memphis, TN (28 January-30 March 2024).
This exquisite publication offers the first combined, in-depth study of two leading practitioners of the Bay Area Figurative movement: Paul Wonner and William “Theophilus” Brown.

Brett Charles Seiler
Brett Charles SeilerBrett Charles Seiler lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa, where he also graduated from the Ruth Prowse School of Art in 2015. Seiler’s work has elements of painting, installation, and object art, with a strong emphasis on the use of text and language. Sometimes poetic, nostalgic, or romantic, it is an integral part of his art or stands on its own as a piece as well. In his paintings, the space is indeterminate, the figures are not located and sketchily fleeting, the writing elements seem spontaneous like statements from street art. The color scheme moves in a narrow spectrum between black, grey, white and brown tones, often using wood. His themes are sexual interaction, oppression, homosexuality, gender, men. Originally from Zimbabwe, a state where human rights violations are commonplace, his work also makes a mark in the struggle for equal sexual orientation in education, media, and institutions. “[My work] is a deep longing for understanding. It is from the point of view of something that I’ve missed, something that I cannot go back to. It’s a process of research.”
The South African artist Brett Charles Seiller’s art tells stories in fragments –of encounters, love, and a longing for understanding – cheerful and sad at the same time.

Ferrari 288 GTO Stefan Bogner
In this fine book motorsport photographer Stefan Bogner captures the classy design vocabulary of the Ferrari 288 GTO and presents some of the rare originals in a large-format illustrated book. The extra factbook with texts by brand expert Jürgen Lewandowski has all the well-known and lesser-known information on the rare Ferrari classic. When in 1984 Ferrari presented the GTO, its racing look and forceful performance data attracted numerous customers. But, just 272 of the Italian sports cars were built within two years. The last one was handed over personally by Enzo Ferrari to Niki Lauda. In spite of all that the 288 GTO was never used as a racing car, although its tubular steel frame, the longitudinally mounted twin turbo V8 and 400 PS made it competitive. Even today it achieves top prices at auctions.

Designers and Creators of the ‘80s - ‘90s Furniture and Interiors
Patrick Favardin, Guy Bloch-ChampfortThe 1980s and ‘90s witnessed unprecedented experiments in the world of design and architecture. Composed of a rich introduction which gives a synoptic vision and 38 monographs, this book reveals through abundant iconography, often unpublished, its formidable aesthetic richness. A new generation of designers stands out, among them Shiro Kuramata, Philippe Starck, Ron Arad, Bob Wilson, Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti. All regenerate creation by refusing the elitism of their predecessors and by favoring the use of new materials. Others, gathered in Italy around Ettore Sottsass and Memphis, combine unexpected colors and patterns to the playful use of plastic laminate. The achievements presented in this book mark the desire for a dialog between artistic references with a new relationship to the industrial aspect, at the dawn of the 21st century and its technological innovations.

Chess Design
Romain Morandi
Chess Design presents exceptional documentation on chess games made by artists, designers, architects, and craftsmen: chessboards themselves, but also artist’s drawings, execution plans and photographs of archives. By presenting nearly 300 of these chessboards chronologically, the author offers a new perspective on the history of art and its evolution. These chess games also reflect the evolution of techniques and materials used during this period: wood, glass, ceramics will give way, from the 1950s, to steel, plastic and composite materials. At the border between the plastic arts and the decorative arts, these chessboards are made by big names in the art scene, design or architecture. The synthesis offered by the author constitutes a valuable and innovative historian’s work, supported by iconography that is both rich and mostly unpublished.

Mending and repair in a throwaway world
Katie Treggiden, foreword by Jay BladesWe live in a single-use society, where fashion is fast, disposability is the norm and it is easier to replace than to repair. We don’t need to mend things anymore – and yet we do. As we start to decouple from the linear take-makewaste model that has dominated Western economies since the Industrial Revolution and seek something more circular, an enquiry into what mending means has never been more urgent. With a foreword by The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades, this new book by craft and circularity advocate Katie Treggiden celebrates 25 artists, curators, designers and makers who have rejected the allure of the fast, disposable and easy in favor of the patina of use, the stories of age and the longevity of care and repair. Accompanying these profiles, six indepth essays explore the societal, cultural and environmental roles of mending in a throwaway world.

Rihanna and the Clothes She Wears Terry Newman
From the author of the runaway bestseller Harry Styles and the Clothes He Wears comes a new, fresh look at style icon Rihanna. Rihanna has learnt how to define her own terms whatever she does. In 2022 at the age of 34, largely because of her Fenty Beauty empire, she became Forbes’ youngest self-made billionaire. But it is her personal wardrobe and the way she wears it that embodies Rihanna’s charisma, integrity, and humor most: everything she does reflects what she wears herself. She is a risk-taker, but as she said on the red-carpet in 2014 “you will never be stylish if you don’t take risks.” The gamble has paid off. Rihanna’s mixand-match method of wearing high fashion and streetwear, young designers and vintage, hip-hop classics, and avant-garde custom-made pieces, has meant that she has equal footing in both the music and fashion industries.
In Rihanna and the Clothes She Wears, Terry Newman steps into the world of this fashion icon by examining her style. From couture catwalks to her own empire Fenty, political statements to high street casual, this chic book fizzles with facts about Rihanna’s styling choices, presenting the star’s most revered looks. With quotes from key designers, this is the perfect gift for any fan.
The breadth of Rihanna’s fashion knowledge and style is astounding. Rihanna and the Clothes She Wears steps into the world of this fashion icon by examining her style, from couture catwalks to her own empire Fenty, political statements to high street casual.
Thierry Mugler Thierry-Maxime Loriot
The retrospective on the work of couturier Thierry Mugler (1948-2022) at the Brooklyn Museum includes more than 150 costumes designed between 1977 and 2014, along with many unpublished archive documents and sketches. It showcases the multiple worlds of this one-of-a-kind artistic figure — a visionary fashion designer, director, photographer and perfumer—through a display of his prêt-à-porter and haute couture silhouettes. Thierry Mugler staged the most spectacular fashion shows of his time. He dressed many celebrities, including Diana Ross, David Bowie, Lady Gaga, Liza Minnelli, Céline Dion and Kim Kardashian. Jeanne Lanvin Fashion Pioneer Pierre & Agata Toromanoff
Jeanne Lanvin was ahead of her time. The French fashion visionary and imaginative businesswoman from a poor background not only created the first designer fashion line for children - this was colorful and full of lightness, at a time when children were still dressed like adults - the first tailored men’s collection and the first unisex eau de toilette, she also founded the longest-running fashion company in the world. This at times employed over 1000 people and included women’s, children’s and men’s fashion, accessories, fragrances, furnishing textiles and decorative objects, and even its own paint factory. The self-taught Lanvin started as a hat maker with her own boutique and managed to become one of the greatest fashion designers of the 20th century with creative energy and inventiveness. She created art deco costumes for theater and film productions, developed the legendary perfume Arpège and a special Lanvin blue, based on the shade Fra Angelico blue. This richly illustrated coffee table book is dedicated to the extraordinary life and work of this exceptional designer.

Tableaux Scenes from the Decade of Excess A Novel Dominic Jay
It is 1984, the year of Ronald Reagan’s reelection and the Brighton bomb; one can sense revolution in the air. Oliver Woolf is a thirty-something journalist, well-connected socially, and an instinctual conservative, whose comfortable routine is upset by a chance encounter in the rain. The girl in the rain is Candy, who is not what she first seems. Over the summer, Oliver and Candy form an unlikely friendship, and when she stops calling on him, he sets out to find her. His search leads him through a labyrinthine underworld that extends from London to Manhattan. Along the way, he meets someone who will change his life forever. A late-20th century Rake’s Progress, Oliver’s journey confronts issues that are still largely taboo. Illustrated with photographs by Steve Diet Goedde, Tableaux combines art and storytelling in a new hybrid form.
The Bordeaux Club The Seventy-Year Story of Great Wines and the Friends Who Shared Them Neil McKendrick
The story of 12 friends who gathered to share and celebrate the extraordinary wines of Bordeaux. Like-minded in their love of wine, they differed wildly (often alarmingly!) in their personal wealth, life and circumstances – their opinions, always voiced, had the power to ignite anger and divide friendships just as easily as they bound them together. Neil McKendrick, member and minute-taker for 57 of the Club’s 70 extraordinary years, weaves the tale of this convivial group with the rigor of a Cambridge academic (he is ex-Master of Gonville and Caius) and the humor of a born raconteur. Alongside the likes of Hugh Johnson, Steven Spurrier and Michael Broadbent, he celebrates the beauty of top-class Bordeaux and the splendor of each setting in which these men were lucky enough to dine, serving up memories of vintages the like of which we will never see again.

Modern Japanese Gardens
Edited byShinobu

Aoza. Introduction by Chisao ShigemoriA Japanese garden represents the essence of Japanese culture, embodying the country’s spirit and philosophy. It has a distinctive style, quality of materials and emphasis on details. Modern Japanese Gardens captures this spirit through the work of 20 contemporary Japanese garden design masters. The gardens featured in Modern Japanese Gardens are drawn from a variety of locations in Japan, placed in different settings, from private houses and temples to cafés, restaurants and stores. Some are of traditional appearance; others have a distinctly modern aesthetic. In common, all the gardens have been influenced by Japanese culture and society, created by masters who are internationally recognized and lauded for their skills.
Modern Japanese Gardens includes insightful text on each garden, revealing the concept behind the design and the use of plants, alongside photography exploring both the detail and the overall aesthetic that shape the design.

Hurry Up and Wait Lia von Blarer, Valerie Stoll
In June 2021, the Hungarian ruling party Fidesz under Viktor Orbán passed a law banning the portrayal of homosexuality to minors. This represents an attempt to make queerness invisible in Hungarian public life. At the same time, the German ARD miniseries Eldorado KaDeWe – Jetzt ist unsere Zeit was being shot in Budapest. It depicts, among other things, the queer life of the Berlin subculture around 1920. While experiencing an almost surreal simultaneity of a light-hearted film bubble and a backward-looking socio-political moment, the two leading actresses Lia von Blarer and Valerie Stoll set out to counter the political state of affairs with an artistic and activist voice. In their book Hurry Up and Wait, the two actresses juxtapose queer fiction with queer reality through photographs and texts.
Can We See Niels Schabrod
Niels Schabrod’s photographs represent a quest for Europe’s icons, for historical snapshots in our collective memory that make sense of and shed light on our understanding of the past. For his project, Schabrod visited four key locations from two centuries: Waterloo, the Somme, as well as the theaters of the Spanish Civil War and of the D-Day landing in 1944 — places that clearly refer to historical events that, given their relevance to remembrance culture and political history, have informed the development, policies and self-image of the European Union. Schabrod’s photographs show not only the sites themselves, but also the soldiers, politicians, reenactors, and tourists who flock to these battlefields. In conjunction with quotations and textual fragments, they act as a kaleidoscope that continuously shakes up historical details and rearranges them to form ever-new patterns.

Rightly celebrated as a true classic of photobook publishing, the book is now reissued in a high-quality new edition under close supervision from the photographer. The scores of black and white shots offer a fascinating glimpse into a skinhead community that was multi-cultural, tightly knit and, above all else, fiercely proud of its look. These are classic photographs of historical value.
The book, described by The Times as “a modern classic”, forms an important visual record of its time and has attained cult status in the genre, alongside works by other eminent photographers such as Derek Ridgers and Nick Knight.

The
Last Hurrah Dafydd Jones
Throughout the 1980s, award-winning photographer Dafydd Jones was granted access to some of England’s most exclusive upper-class events. Now, the author of Oxford: The Last Hurrah presents this irreverent and intimate portrait of birthday parties and charity balls, Eton picnics and private school celebrations. With the crack of a hunting rifle and a spray of champagne, these photos give an almost cinematic account of high-society England at its most riotous and its most vulnerable. Against the backdrop of Thatcher’s Britain, globalization, the Falklands War, rising stocks and dwindling inherited fortunes, Jones reveals the inner lives of the established elite as they party long into the night-time of their fading world.

Mississippi Dream
Larry Niehues, Brooks Hall
Mississippi Dream is French photographer Larry Niehues’ second book following Nothing Has Changed, his ‘love letter to America’. For this book, Niehues chose to go deeper into his fascination with the Delta region of the United States and focus on the great Mississippi river. In this passionate exploration inside the culture of the Deep South, Niehues captures aspects of the storied river far beyond landscapes and blue skies. These are images that were taken throughout 2020 & 2021 while confronting a pandemic, as well as major flooding that deeply affected the states along the lower Mississippi river. This raw and passionate body of work captures a range of moments; from epic performances by Blues legends at iconic local juke joints, to more intimate settings. It documents century-old Baptist traditions and everyday life in what is often referred to as ‘The Most Southern Place on Earth.’ The photographs tell a story that feels both nostalgic and surreal, and is sure to inspire a deep sense of what life is like in the Delta South.

The Golden Age of Photojournalism
Russell Melcher
Today, photography is part of everyday life for the vast majority of people — digital, fast, and fleeting. But in the mid-20th century, it was a completely different story; photographers viewed themselves as authors and entertainers. Russell Melcher was one of the greats — in this volume, he shows us his most impressive pictures while telling us his best stories. He followed the beautiful, the rich, the famous, and the powerful around the globe, chronicling their lives. The Windsors, Romy Schneider, Elvis Presley, Fidel Castro, and the Shah of Iran have all appeared in front of his camera.
As European Director at Magnum and then Photo Editor at Paris Match, he later worked with such photography legends as Robert Capa and Elliott Erwitt, shaping the character of the style-setting photo agency.

Coolness
The Pure Elegance of Freedom
Michael KöckritzBlack jazz musicians of the 1930s and 1940s are attributed with first using ‘cool’ as slang, and it was quickly adopted by teenagers. Nowadays the word is ubiquitous — and vaguely refers to anything that is considered laid-back or trendy. But what does it actually mean, how does “coolness” become something tangible? What makes it so appealing?
Michael Kockritz uses a comprehensive approach to explore these questions by talking to experts, iconic figures, and famous faces, and researching history and stories.
He makes an impressive argument for coolness as a timeless, modern, emotional experience and self-confident attitude that lives off the appeal of not fitting in, while simultaneously captivating us with its markedly aesthetic dimension

Siam & China Through the Lens of John Thomson
Edited by Betty Yao, Narisa ChakrabongseThe range, depth and aesthetic quality of John Thomson’s photographic vision mark him out as one of the most important travel photographers. Thomson arrived in Siam in 1865 and with the help of the British Consul in Bangkok, he was able to gain an audience with King Mongkut who granted him permission to take some formal portraits of the King, his royal family and chief ministers, as well as recording important ceremonies and traveling to Ayutthaya, Petchaburi and the surrounding countryside. Thomson became the first photographer to document Angkor Wat before returning to London. Between 1868-1872 Thomson turned his attention to China, making extensive trips to Guangdon, Fujian, Beijing and China’s northeast traveling down the Yangtze river and covering nearly 5,000 miles. His collection of over 600 glass negatives forms a unique archive of images, which are today housed in the Wellcome Library, London.
Green Namibia Patricia Parinejad
After Green Mallorca, the first successful volume of the Green series at teNeues, photographer Patricia Parinejad has traveled to Namibia to capture in impressive photographs the work of a number of environmental projects, sustainability initiatives, green hotels, lodges and camps, conservation and research programmes and local producers, farmers and craftsmen. Together with poetic as well as informative texts this has resulted in the extraordinary illustrated book Green Namibia. A book for and about inspiring people who are helping to keep the green movement going by working towards more sustainable operations of their hotels, protecting wildlife, producing locally, promoting biodiversity and reducing their carbon footprint at the same time. Patricia Parinejad highlights how we can reconnect to the natural world with a sense of awe for Namibia, its deserts and plains.
Barbara Cole Between Worlds Barbara Cole
Canadian Barbara Cole’s artwork is collected by public and private institutions and has been exhibited worldwide. Cole, who is often referred to as an inventor, uses a raw, hands-on photographic process that is consistent with her belief that the possibilities of photography are virtually limitless.
Over the past 30 years, although she works with traditional photographic means, Cole’s approach and aesthetic has become closer to that of a painter. The artist’s work focuses on a powerful narrative, some with external motifs and others with intense figure transformations that alone tell the story. Cole’s background in fashion and fashion editorial naturally leads to a process that channels her experience into creating a particular atmosphere with costumes and backdrops.

New York Unseen Luc Kordas
Like the first part of the Unseen series (London Unseen), New York Unseen is an authentic approach to the character of a world metropolis. It is the first illustrated book that attempts to capture the soul of the Big Apple without focusing on tourist highlights such as the Statue of Liberty and Central Park. Instead, Luc Kordas focuses on intimate encounters with the protagonists of the East Coast metropolis: its residents. Embedded in their ‘natural habitat,’ the mostly black-and-white images of people from the city’s streets, backyards, apartments, or trains often tell much more than the 1,000th image of the Empire State Building could. The result is a photographic smorgasbord of looks, gestures, situations that capture the soul of New York.

Berlin Unseen Martin U. Waltz
Berlin Unseen is, like the first two parts of the Unseen series (London Unseen and New York Unseen), an authentic approach to the character of the German capital. At the same time, the images by Martin U. Waltz breathe the atmosphere of the metropolis on the Spree as authentically as few others. The star photographer of the German street photography scene has always been close to the pulse of the city. Yet it is not the city’s tourist highlights that interest Martin U. Waltz. It is the streets and the faces of the ‘real’ Berlin, the hidden architecture, the backyards, party basements and subcultures of the city. His images smell and taste of Berlin, and not (only) of the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag and TV Tower. Berlin Unseen thus becomes a photographic smorgasbord of glances, gestures, situations that capture the soul of Berlin.

A Series of Glances Andy Summers
Since the 1970s, Andy Summers has been one of the great guitarists of his generation as the guitarist of The Police and achieved worldwide fame alongside singer Sting, but also later as a solo artist. A Series of Glances becomes perhaps Andy Summer’s most personal work ever.
The Police guitarist Andy Summers is not only still on the road as a musician, but is known internationally as an art photographer. In A Series of Glances, he now collects his best photographs from several decades for the first time in a large, lavishly designed illustrated book.

Eye Mama
Poetic Truths of Home and Motherhood
Karni Arieli
During the 2020 lockdown, photographer and BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Karni Arieli began documenting her family in pictures. Others did the same, and so the idea for a major international photography project was born. Mothers grabbed their cameras, and Karni decided to start a visual movement. The motivation was complex: to find comfort, to find an occupation that is fulfilling through photography as an art form, to be able to communicate to others without words and feel solidarity, to share everyday life, which can be lonely despite being turbulent. In mid-April 2021, Karni started an Instagram feed called EYE MAMA. The community of artistic mothers quickly grew to over 4,000 and counting. Out of anonymity, this created an unstoppable movement that is now being channelled into a book.
Mothers from around the world share images from their pandemic lives in this impressive, emotionally engaging, high quality photography book.
Greenhouses Cathedrals for Plants
Werner PawlokBotanical gardens represent people’s centuries-old fascination with exotic plants. Werner Pawlok has photographically explored special tropical greenhouses within Europe and shows us here his most beautiful pictures in his usual colorfully expressive manner - from the Palm House in the Botanical Garden in Copenhagen, to Kew Gardens in London, and the Great Palm House at Schönbrunn. The scent of the warm earth and the breath of the plants can almost be felt when looking at the large-format and colorful pictures. Fascinating interplays of color allow the filigree architecture of famous master builders and the impressive plants to shine in a special light. Pawlok, self-taught and intuitive photographer, captures these magical places in a fascinating way. Each photo is a work of art in itself. Interesting texts about the cultural history of greenhouses, from the simple wooden construction to the efficient glass dome, accompany this extraordinary photo book.
A unique coffee table book with photographs of the most beautiful greenhouses in Europe - atmospheric, dreamlike, colorful.

Global Ikat
The World of Compelling Cloth Rosemary Crill
Deceptively simple or fantastically intricate, ikat technique has been used for many centuries to create extravagant costumes and cloths of deep cultural meaning. The distinctively blurred, feathered or jagged patterns of ikat-dyed textiles are found across much of the world - from Japan in the east to Central and South America in the west, with vast areas of South-east Asia, India, Central Asia and the Middle East in between. The traditional patterns still hold cultural relevance today in significant parts of the long-established ikat-weaving areas. Textile artists and fashion designers in many and varied countries have taken ikat in new directions, respecting traditional forms and palettes while creatively diverging from them. This is the first time all the different iterations of this textile have been comprehensively brought together in one volume, drawing from the wide-ranging collection of David Paly.
Tennis
The Ultimate Book
Peter Feierabend, Stefan MaiwaldFormerly reserved for the elite, tennis has become a popular sport over the years. And even if you don’t play yourself, the tennis lifestyle exerts a certain fascination. It’s not uncommon at Grand Slams like Wimbledon to find it more interesting who’s watching from the stands than who’s down on the court. However, famous tennis personalities are also a source of conversation - just remember John McEnroe’s infamous outbursts. This, the ultimate tennis book is dedicated to the stories on and off the court, it explains the history of the sport, shows the most important courts and tournaments, the most exciting competitions and legendary athletes. Tennis fashion and equipment are also covered, and who knows, maybe after reading this entertaining tennis compendium you will feel the need to pick up a racket.

Enchanted Land Foreign Writings About Chiang Mai in the Early 20th Century
Graham Jefcoate
A century ago, northern Thailand (or Siam as it was then known) was home to small communities of Westerners, many of them British diplomats and foresters or American missionaries. Though few in number, they left behind a considerable written legacy. This book makes a selection of that writing accessible to a wide readership, much of it for the first time. The texts are illustrated by 65 evocative photographs, many of them contemporary.

Urban Oasis Parks and Green Projects around the World
Jessica Jungbauer
It’s probably not just since the pandemic that city dwellers have realized what a luxury a park nearby is. But climate change is threatening these idyllic places in the middle of the noisy, particularlypolluted big city. Innovative projects and forward-thinking urban planners are seeking to remedy the situation in order to equip growing cities for the future and make them liveable. Urban Oasis is devoted to 20 green projects for better city life, covering topics such as the slow flower movement, the agricultural use of urban roofs, the greening of former industrial sites and the restoration of listed parks. From New York’s High Line to Paris’s Plein air organic flower farm to Berlin’s neo-baroque Körnerpark, the parks and projects featured in this visually stunning book are all inspiring.
The Cyclades
Greek Island Paradise Rudi Sebastian
The first comprehensive illustrated book on the Cyclades archipelago, which also includes the well-known islands of Santorini, Naxos, Paros and Mykonos. The islands are currently among the trendiest travel destinations in the world. This illustrated book doesn’t focus on the big tourist hotspots and Instagram highlights that can be seen everywhere else, but captures the Greek island world as a whole. Lonely bays and half-ruined towns stand next to the glossy world of the rich and famous who spend the summer on the islands. Highlife in summer next to almost deserted streets in winter. Greek tradition next to modern mass tourism. It is precisely these discrepancies that make the volume so distinctive. Rudi Sebastian has spent many weeks on the islands over several years in all seasons and has followed the soul of the country and its people.
