PLAYING MEMORY GAMES WITH GRANDPA

PLAYING MEMORY GAMES WITH GRANDPA
Every summer, HARU and LIS stay with their grandpa at a cabin.
“Grandpa, do you remember what day it is today?”
“Of course I do! It’s Challenge Day: no homework, just games and a great prize at the end of it!” “Tell us what the challenge is!”
“You have to solve all the memory games! Are you ready?” “Yes!”
“The answer to the first game will give you three items that will come in handy later!”
LOOK CAREFULLY at the objects and the words in the bags. Then COVER them with your hand and READ the words on the list next to each.
What’s missing?
FIND the missing item for each bag.
SLIPPERS ARTICHOKE
“I’m sure I put them here!”
Help Grandpa find his lost flashlights.
“What a mess, HARU ! Let’s tidy it up!”
You’ll need someone to help you with this challenge, either a friend or an adult. OPEN the poster and CUT OUT all the objects for this activity, then TURN THEM OVER so you can’t see what they are. Spread them out on a table and MIX THEM ALL UP.
The players take turns SELECTING TWO CARDS . If they find two different objects, they must turn the cards back over, then the next player goes. If the objects on the cards are the same, the player keeps them. THE OBJECTIVE of the game is to collect as many PAIRS of objects as possible, and then CLEAN UP the TRUNKS in the attic.
LET’S LEARN ABOUT THE BRAIN
“Look what HARU found while we were cleaning up the trunks!”
“It’s a model of a BRAIN . . . but it’s all white!” exclaims Haru, opening the box.
“Let’s use the picture on the lid to color all the parts.”
After reading the name and function of all the parts of the brain, COLOR them the correct colors.
TEMPORAL LOBE: where memories form
OCCIPITAL LOBE: where what you see is processed
PARIETAL LOBE: where touch is processed
FRONTAL LOBE: where thoughts and ideas form
CEREBELLUM: controls balance
SPINAL CORD: connects your brain to the rest of your body
Here’s Grandpa’s SECRET message. It’s written in these colors.
Do you REMEMBER which words go with which color? Try to write them down and find out what the first sentence is.
Now let’s do the opposite. Below is the entire, slightly different message, with all the words you saw before. Look at them again, and then COLOR the boxes using the color that corresponds to each word.
Now HARU and LIS put Grandpa to the test!
They leave the same colors, but change the words. Help them WRITE new words.
Now color in the boxes of the secret message that Grandpa has to work out. You don’t have to use all eight colors.
You can play with a friend, using even more words and colors!
PLAYING MEMORY GAMES WITH GRANDPA
It’s time to play with the flashlight! Grandpa is a master at creating shadows with his hands. LOOK CAREFULLY at all the shadows he creates for his grandchildren, and then cover them with your paddle.
Which one is not like the others? ................................
Do you remember the order the shadow animals appeared in?
Try answering with their names.
The next day, LIS and HARU are hanging out with their friends Ravi, Lucrezia, and Miguel. Grandpa suggests they play a game.
He takes their backpacks and places them on a grid. He tells them all to LOOK CAREFULLY, and then he covers the backpacks with a towel. You look at them, too, and then cover them with your paddle.
Where are the backpacks?
Indicate their position on the empty grids at the bottom of the opposite page.
LIS’S BACKPACK
LUCREZIA’S BACKPACK
HARU’S BACKPACK
RAVI’S BACKPACK
MIGUEL’S BACKPACK
It’s getting harder.
Can you INDICATE where each child’s backpack is?
A CHALLENGE BETWEEN FRIENDS
“I love memory games!” says Lucrezia. “I learned this nursery rhyme at school. Let’s see if you can remember it!”
READ the nursery rhyme, and then cover it. When you feel ready, try to repeat it.
The fairy Melusina sat outdoors watching the waves on the seashore!
A big bungling cat tried to catch her, but ended up in the sea with very wet fur!
Look carefully at the picture on the left. Cover it, and then look at the picture on the right to see if you can spot the differences.
Now that it’s dark, it’s time to go back to the cabin. But the party isn’t over yet!
Grandpa wants to make a margherita sponge cake to celebrate the end of the CHALLENGE DAYS .
MARGHERITA CAKE RECIPE
PLAIN FLOUR EGGS SUGAR
FINE SALT BUTTER POTATO STARCH BAKING POWDER ICING SUGAR LEMON
READ the list of ingredients with him, and then cover it.
What ingredients are missing from Grandpa’s pantry?
PLAIN FLOUR
EGGS
SUGAR
FINE SALT BUTTER
POTATO STARCH
BAKING POWDER
ICING SUGAR
LEMON
“Oh no! We can’t make a cake without eggs and butter. Lis, Haru, can you go and buy the missing INGREDIENTS ?
The grocery store is at the END of the path with the gargoyle, and the dairy store is right next to the Big Oak. Don’t take any shortcuts, AND ALWAYS STAY ON THE PATH!”
LOOK CAREFULLY at all the different paths. Which one will take them to the grocery store and the dairy store without ever leaving the path? ...................................
Now that you’ve found it, MEMORIZE IT, and then DRAW IT on the map on this page. And NO PEEKING !
“After passing all the tests, you’ve really earned these cakes. But let’s REARRANGE them first!”
You’ll need a friend for this game. CUT OUT the cards on the poster.
With a partner, DECIDE who goes first. The first player places the cards on the table, in any order they like, while the other player turns around so that they can’t see.
On the word GO , the second player can turn around and LOOK at the sequence for 30 seconds.
Then they turn away again and the first player MIXES up the cards.
On the word GO , the opponent has to try putting the cards back in the same order the first player put them in originally.
The WINNER is the player who takes the least amount of time to put them in the right order.
