Accrington & Rossendale College has gained a reputation as one of the best Colleges in the country and this year our results for 16-18 year olds puts us in the top 10% of FE and tertiary Colleges in the country and means we’re number 1 in Pennine Lancashire! We are rightly proud of these achievements, but they are only a small part of the story.

We look forward to welcoming you to Accrington and Rossendale College.

We constantly invest large sums of money to bring you a campus and facilities which are amongst the best in the country and ensure that you stand the best chance of success. We also attract experienced tutors with great track records in industry who can not only share their knowledge with you, but also their practical experience of working in such diverse places as board rooms and building sites. At accross every student is treated as an individual and you will have access to outstanding support, advice and guidance. We know how important your course of study is to you and your future and we want you to be as successful as possible. That is why every student has a dedicated and experienced tutor who will take a lively interest in you and your progress.

We expect you to study hard and achieve great things with us during your time at accross, but we also believe that this is a time to enjoy yourself, have new experiences and make friends which will last a lifetime. That’s why we created the purpose built “Hub”, which acts as a chill out space and comes with a plasma screen, Nintendo Wii and table tennis. It gives you the opportunity to spend time with your friends. During your time with us you will get the opportunity to take part in some great experiences. You may take part in the educational trips to the Eden Centre in Cornwall, the Lake District or overseas. You may also go on one of the many outings to museums and theatres we arrange throughout the year or even travel overseas as part of your studies. The most important thing though, is how you make the most of your opportunity of a College education. You’ll be studying at one of the most successful further education Colleges in the country where our graduates have gone on to become European Cup winners, World Superbike Champions, Michelin Starred Chefs and TV, stage and cinema actors. We hope that you will be our next success story.

Lynda Mason Principal

What else can we offer you as well as an education?

You’ll be studying hard to get the grades you want, but College is about enjoying yourself as well. We want you to broaden your experiences in life, meet new people and develop as an individual. You will meet new friends in your tutor groups and in addition to that, we provide excellent social areas where you can meet like-minded people or join social, recreational and sporting clubs. We hope you’ll enjoy the opportunities presented to you during your time with us.

Which study option is best for you and what’s the next step?

20 - 21

www.accross.ac.uk

Levels explained As well as choosing the subject area you want to study, you will also need to make important decisions about the level and type of course which will be best for you. Our courses are available at different levels, which mean you can start at whatever stage is right for you and progress to higher education or employment. The level you study at, will depend on the GCSE grades you get. Entry Level… These courses are usually studied for one year full-time (or part-time) if you are coming into College with no qualifications. You will be continually assessed and given individual guidance and support when you need it. Your ‘record of achievement’ will be updated and you will have the opportunity to gain other qualifications that interest you. If you need help or specialised equipment to enable you to study, we have tutors that can help. At the end of the course we will guide you to move on to a higher level course or to a job that’s right for you.

"Support is available at all levels to help you succeed with your studies. This includes personal tutorial support and guidance."

Level 1… Level 1 courses are usually studied for one year, to give you a strong foundation in your chosen subject area. You will usually study a Level 1 course if you leave school with mainly F and G grades, or if you choose to enter a specialised occupational area where you have no previous experience. You will also have the opportunity to develop the literacy and numeracy skills needed for your chosen career.

Level 2… Level 2 courses are usually studied for one year, to prepare you for advanced level study or for employment. You will usually study a Level 2 course if you leave school with mainly D and E grades, or if you choose to enter a specialised occupational area where you have no previous experience. You will also have the opportunity to develop the literacy and numeracy skills needed for your chosen career. Level 3… Level 3 courses are advanced programmes of study which are usually studied for two years. They will prepare you for progression to higher education courses at university or for employment at a professional level. You will usually study a Level 3 course if you leave school with mainly A* - C grades (including English and Maths) or a merit grade in a relevant Level 2 qualification. Levels 4 and 5… These are higher education courses, which you could progress to after successfully completing your advanced level programme. You can progress to higher level courses in many subjects at accross College, or you may choose to move to another College or university which offers specialist programmes to prepare you for your chosen career.

22 - 23

www.accross.ac.uk

Types of programmes at accross Whatever course area you choose to study, you will need to consider what type of programme will best suit the way you prefer to learn, and your chosen career route. The following options are available to you in most course areas: Introductory, First and National Diplomas… These programmes are available at Level 1 (Introductory), Level 2 (First) and Level 3 (National). They are vocational qualifications, which will prepare you for further study or employment related to a specific area of work. They have an emphasis on developing practical and creative skills and are made up of a series of core and optional units. All units are assessed individually by project and assignment work. NVQ Diploma… These programmes are available at Levels 1, 2 and 3 with options to progress to Levels 4 and 5 in some areas. They are vocational qualifications, related to specific occupations, and are usually studied within a workplace or a realistic work environment. NVQ Diploma programmes focus directly on developing the practical skills and knowledge needed for a specific job role. Programmes are made up of a series of units, which are assessed as you go along and when you are ready. To achieve your NVQ Diploma you need to show that you are competent in a range of practical skills which will be observed, and production of a portfolio of evidence. NVQ Diplomas are highly valued by employers, as they are based on the skills needed for each specific industry.

Apprenticeships… As an alternative to full-time study, an apprenticeship will give you a structured training and skills development pathway to become a technician, crafts person or junior manager with scope to go on to further study or career progression in the future. You will need at least two GCSEs at Grade D or above in English and Maths for most courses. You must have the potential to achieve NVQ Level 2 and/ or Level 3 and to develop associated key skills. You will be fully employed within a relevant organisation, earning a wage and depending on your chosen career area, you will study at College on a block or day release basis.

New For

2013 The stanhill Academy for enterprise supported by ilyas khan

an international successful entrepreneur teams up with one of the UK’s most successful Colleges.

36 - 37

www.accross.ac.uk

Entry Requirements: The Academy is open to any accross learner taking a level 3 or above qualification (including HE) that has a focus on applicable industries such as: • • • • • • •

Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Information Technology Business with HR Business with Accountancy Software Development Accountancy Digital Media Production

WHAT IS the stanhill academy for enterprise? The Stanhill Academy is supported by locally born and bred entrepreneur and philanthropist Ilyas Khan – who is also a past student of accross. Whether you know him as an internationally successful businessman, the Accrington Stanley fan who bought the club he loved or the Chairman of Leonard Cheshire Disability, Ilyas Khan has a worldwide reputation as an expert on business and entrepreneurship and we’re thrilled to say he will be teaming up with Accrington & Rossendale College to create the Stanhill Academy for Enterprise named after his family office investment company, Stanhill Capital Partners. The Stanhill Academy for Enterprise incorporates all business-related courses at Accrington and Rossendale College. Students studying one of these courses will participate in innovative, cross-faculty enterprise projects throughout their course of study which will help them to gain entrepreneurial skills and learn about different aspects of business. In the final year of their course of study, students will have the opportunity to apply for an internship programme at one of Ilyas Khan’s companies. Each year, one student will be chosen to take part in this once in a lifetime internship programme. Those that don’t succeed to gain an internship will still have benefited from being a part of this inspirational Business Academy.

The Internship programme: The internship programme will be open to students in their final year of their course of study within The Stanhill Academy for Enterprise. The student should be predicted or have achieved, good grades in their area of study, but more importantly should have shown enthusiasm, innovation and commitment. All students will be asked to present an innovative project to the panel that they have been involved in. This project will have been incorporated into their curriculum throughout the year, equipping them with evidence for application. If they choose to submit evidence from an independent project, that will also be encouraged. Students will be asked to submit their application detailing why they would make an ideal intern. The application brief will be unscripted and unrestrictive so that students can apply in the best way that they see fit; thus enhancing innovation. They can use any medium they wish to apply whether that is paper-based, online, video or mixed media. We want to see creativity, problem solving and innovation and therefore the application will be entirely their own creation.

Earn while you learn with an Apprenticeship!

38 - 39

www.accross.ac.uk

About Apprenticeships Apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time. There are different levels of Apprenticeship available, but they all lead to National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), Functional Skills qualifications and, in some cases, a Technical Certificate.

How long does an Apprenticeship take? There is no set time to complete an Apprenticeship as they vary widely in content and size. The length of time taken will depend on the ability of the individual apprentice and the employer’s requirements. An Apprenticeship will usually take anything from 12 to 24 months.

Do I need qualifications? We look for certain skills and your GCSE achievements. We will ask you to take a Genesys test (which measures your interests and abilities to ensure you’re on the right track as you develop your career plan) and a Basic Skills Assessment. For an Advanced Apprenticeship you need an NVQ Level 2. If you successfully complete your Apprenticeship you may progress to the Advanced Apprenticeship depending on your ability.

How do Apprenticeships work? Your employer pays your wages and gives you on-the-job training which allows you to achieve National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). You may also spend time with us here at College, but we will tailor your apprenticeship to your employer’s needs. You will gain functional skills that will be useful in the job market - like working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology. In addition, you’ll study for a technical certificate, which will give you further knowledge and understanding of your job.

Are there different types of Apprenticeships? There are two different types available, an Apprenticeship and an Advanced Apprenticeship. They include the following basic elements: • •

• •

An appropriate National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at either Level 2 or 3 Functional skills qualifications, for example communication, using new technology and application of number A technical certificate such as a BTEC or City and Guilds (included in most cases) Other qualifications or requirements as specified by the particular occupation

How much do I get paid? Most apprentices are employed by businesses and are paid a salary that reflects their skills, experience, age and ability. Do I get holidays? You’ll get at least one and a half days paid holiday for every month of your training. On top of that, you’ll also get bank holidays. What qualifications do I get when I’ve finished my Apprenticeship? You’ll get a package of qualifications when you finish your Apprenticeship - a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), a Technical Certificate such as a BTEC National Diploma or a City and Guilds Progression Award and Functional Skills qualifications.

i chose accross because...

There’s a responsibility on the students to get their research done and monitor their own workload and it’s much better than just having things handed to you. I’d recommend this course to anybody because it’s hard to get a job at the moment and vocational qualifications can really make a difference. Jonathan Love Studied Business and AAT

I moved to the College from another school and I really like the style of learning here. I’ve definitely improved a lot. I’m getting good grades and next I hope to go to University to study international business.

WOOD OCCUPATIONS

Why study construction and building services at accross? For well over a decade the College’s construction and building services department has been regarded as one of the best in the UK. We were the first construction department to be recognised by the government as a Centre of Vocational Excellence and the only one to receive FOUR consecutive Grade 1s at Government Inspections. We have also been awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Access and Achievement in Construction.

Windsor Castle has become the work place of our former Carpentry and Joinery students after successfully being recruited to The Prince’s Foundation.

Following on from achieving CoVE status and the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Further and Higher Education, we have been awarded the Training Quality Standard with excellence in Construction.

You can practice your skills in state of-the-art workshops as well as gaining real site experience through taking part in our community projects.

All of our tutors and assessors have many years of experience actually doing the jobs they’re training you to do. THIS means they know the skills you need for the work place AND OUR STAFF TEAM ALSO INCLUDES TWO OFFICIAL GUINNESS WORLD RECORD HOLDERS FOR SPEED WALLPAPER HANGING. That combined with our outstanding facilities and track record are why we’re regarded as one of the UK’s best construction departments.

The Construction department provides progression from school links right through to HNDs with many students continuing studies at university. We also have many competition successes with students winning many regional and national accolades in all Construction Trades with some selected to be in the UK squad as representatives at the World Skills events.

All tutors have varied and full site experience. They undergo regular on-site experience and industrial updating to ensure their skills and knowledge remain current.
