WHICH STUDY OPTION IS BEST FOR YOU AND WHAT’S THE NEXT STEP? www.accross.ac.uk | 17

LEVELS

EXPLAINED As well as choosing the subject area you want to study, you will also need to make important decisions about the level and type of course which will be best for you. Our courses are available at different levels, which mean you can start at whatever stage is right for you and progress to higher education or employment. The level you study at, will depend on the GCSE grades you get.

Levels 4 and 5

Level 3

Level 2 Level 2 courses are usually studied for one year, to prepare you for advanced level study or for employment. You will usually study a Level 2 course if you leave school with mainly D and E grades, or if you choose to enter a specialised occupational area where you have no previous experience. You will also have the opportunity to develop the literacy and numeracy skills needed for your chosen career.

Level 3 courses are advanced programmes of study which are usually studied for two years. They will prepare you for progression to higher education courses at university or for employment at a professional level. You will usually study a Level 3 course if you leave school with mainly A* - C grades (including English and Maths) or a merit grade in a relevant Level 2 qualification.

Entry Level These courses are usually studied for one year full-time (or part-time) if you are coming into College with no qualifications. You will be continually assessed and given individual guidance and support when you need it. Your ‘record of achievement’ will be updated and you will have the opportunity to gain other qualifications that interest you. If you need help or specialised equipment to enable you to study, we have tutors that can help. At the end of the course we will guide you to move on to a higher level course or to a job that’s right for you.

18 | T: (01254) 354354 - E: info@accross.ac.uk

These are higher education courses, which you could progress to after successfully completing your advanced level programme. You can progress to higher level courses in many subjects at AccRoss College, or you may choose to move to another College or university which offers specialist programmes to prepare you for your chosen career.

Level 1 Level 1 courses are usually studied for one year, to give you a strong foundation in your chosen subject area. You will usually study a Level 1 course if you leave school with mainly F and G grades, or if you choose to enter a specialised occupational area where you have no previous experience. You will also have the opportunity to develop the literacy and numeracy skills needed for your chosen career.

TYPES OF

PROGRAMME AT ACCROSS Whatever course area you choose to study, you will need to consider what type of programme will best suit the way you prefer to learn, and your chosen career route. The following options are available to you in most course areas:

Vocational Programmes These programmes are available at Entry Level, Levels 1, 2 and 3. They are vocational qualifications, which will prepare you for further study or employment related to a specific area of work. They have an emphasis on developing practical and creative skills and are made up of a series of core and optional units. All units are assessed individually by project and assignment work.

Support is available at all levels to help you succeed with your studies. This includes personal tutorial support and guidance.

5 4 3 2 1

NVQ Diploma These programmes are available at Levels 1, 2 and 3 with options to progress to Levels 4 and 5 in some areas. They are vocational qualifications, related to specific occupations and are usually studied within a workplace or a realistic work environment. NVQ Diploma programmes focus directly on developing the practical skills and knowledge needed for a specific job role. Programmes are made up of a series of units, which are assessed as you go along and when you are ready. To achieve your NVQ Diploma you need to show that you are competent in a range of practical skills which will be observed, and production of a portfolio of evidence. NVQ Diplomas are highly valued by employers, as they are based on the skills needed for each specific industry.

Apprenticeships As an alternative to full-time study, an apprenticeship will give you a structured training and skills development pathway to become a technician, crafts person or junior manager with scope to go on to further study or career progression in the future. You will need at least two GCSEs at Grade D or above in English and Maths for most courses. You must have the potential to achieve NVQ Level 2 and/or Level 3 and to develop associated key skills. You will be fully employed within a relevant organisation, earning a wage and depending on your chosen career area, you will study at College on a block or day release basis.

Here at AccRoss it’s possible to progress to higher level courses when you complete a course of study. The “Moving On Up” logo lets you see at a glance just how far your studies can go with us. In some instances it’s possible to start on a Level 1 course and progress all the way up to a BA (Hons) Degree at College (Level 5) It’s never too early to start thinking about progression and continuing your studies can add thousands of pounds to your salary over the course of your life, so look out for the “Moving On Up” logo to see how far you can go with us. The white numbers will show how far you can progress with your studies here at AccRoss. For Higher Education courses that we offer for your progression please turn to page 68. www.accross.ac.uk | 19

Marc Burchell Media Student

“If I had to pay for the travel every day from my home to the College it would cost me £400 per term, which is £1,200 per year, so I don’t think I’d have taken my course if it wasn’t for the travel pass. I also use it to see friends I’ve made at Accrington & Rossendale College and family I have in Burnley outside of college hours and at the weekend, so I get a lot of use out of it. If I didn’t have my free travel I might not have been able to come here to study, so it’s been really helpful.”

When you enrol, you will receive an identity card which gives you automatic access to most of the College facilities. This ID proves that you are a student and it will come with a coloured lanyard, which you will be expected to wear around your neck at all times.

Care to Learn is child care for young learners. You may be able to claim ‘Care to Learn’ funding if you are under 20 years of age and need help with childcare costs. COMPUTING &

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY In their own words

Name: Yinka Skorski Course: IT (Creative Media) Level 2

Our Computing and IT qualifications can open doors with employers and universities and there are several reasons why our department is so highly rated. Our tutors, the people you will be learning from on a daily basis, are widely experienced, coming to us from companies like Microsoft, Hewlett Packard and the Ministry of Defence.

We invest heavily in our Mac and PC network, so you have fast & reliable computer facilities.

“I came here because I was interested in the computer games course and it covers really interesting ground such as game coding, doing presentations about game consoles and game defects and research in the advertisement area. The tutors have been really helpful and I’ve enjoyed the course a lot. I’ve applied to Leeds University because I want to become a professional games designer.”

Gain the benefit of experienced tutors.

Also, we believe that the numbers don’t lie and last year our computing courses proved so popular that over two thirds of students who completed their level 1 stayed with us to complete their level 2 qualification and our computing courses had a 99% achievement rate.

We prepare students for a job in industry by teaching relevant skills including programming (five different languages), web design and project management.

We mix great teaching with great facilities, a friendly campus and all the support you need to make the most of your time at College.

Great computer classrooms designed around student needs.

“I’d studied at Accrington & Rossendale College on the Sport BTEC and it was mainly practical, which I enjoyed. I signed professional terms with Accrington Stanley, but after that didn’t work out I enrolled on the foundation degree as I knew I’d still get to play football for the academy at a really high level. I’m in the first year of my degree and it’s going well. It’s hard work, but if you’re willing to put in the effort then you reap the rewards. I’ve been studying different fitness testing and the effects of exercise on the body… It’s surprising how high the level of study is, but they’re small classes, so the ratio of students to teachers is lower than if I’d gone away to any other university. That means your work is a lot better and they can give you more individual feedback and attention.”

The college has invested in a new, fully stocked Fitness Gym and Sports Science Lab which complements our already outstanding sports facilities.
