SOME

REASONS TO

STUDY

Our student success rate - Our success rates put us in the top 10% of FE and tertiary colleges in the country and make us number one in Pennine Lancashire. We are officially outstanding - In our latest Ofsted inspection (May 2009) we were awarded grade ones (outstanding) in all areas! We have a Student Council which has a high profile within College and is key to decisions that affect you at the College. Many student representatives have additional roles such as events, communications or health officers. Great for your CV!

All full-time 16-19 students will have access to a Learning and Development Mentor to support and develop their learning and employability skills to ensure all learners reach their full potential, achieve their goals and progress into further study or employment.

The Campus - We have a state of the art, multi-million pound campus which has been designed to help students achieve their potential and maximise their college experience.

WITH US • •

Rubbing shoulders with the greats - We regularly invite top professionals into the College to give lectures, master classes or just work alongside our students. Our learners have met and worked alongside Michelin starred chefs, award winning movie directors, multi-millionaire businessmen, top class professional footballers and TV personalities. We are a Healthy College and provide a wide range of health information, support and access to NHS and other health organisations. We have strong links with Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust and have a College Nurse on site. College Alumni - Our graduates read like a who’s who of sporting, business and artistic achievement. If you saw Gary Neville lift the European Cup, read Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, enjoyed Lee Ingleby in the Harry Potter movies or were thrilled when Ilyas Khan took over Accrington Stanley then you’re familiar with our alumni and their outstanding achievements. We offer outstanding enrichment activities - These include monthly leisure and cultural trips, plus events each day at the College for learners to enjoy and complement their studies. You can join in one of the many sporting activities held throughout the year (badminton, netball, trampolining, mountain biking) or join our gym.

Which course is right for

you?

Found a course of interest but not sure what level is right for you? Use our simple jargon buster to help you decide which path is best for you to take.

The General Certificate of Secondary Education is a Level 2 qualification which is traditionally studied in high school, but which can be taken at any time. These can lead on to advanced level routes of study (e.g. A-Level courses).

Advanced Level

Advanced level courses are Level 3 qualifications and encompass the new style A-Levels, which can be taken in two halves. Other examples of advanced level courses are BTEC National Diplomas and Advanced Apprenticeships. Advanced level qualifications are traditionally required as entry requirements to university.

Apprenticeships

As an alternative to full-time study, an apprenticeship will give you structured training and skills development with scope to go on to further study or career progression in the future. You will need at least two GCSEs at Grade D or above in English and Maths for most courses. You must have the potential to achieve NVQ Level 2 and/or Level 3 and to develop associated functional skills. You will be fully employed within a relevant organisation, earning a wage and depending on your chosen career area, you will study at College on a block or day release basis.

Access to Higher Education

‘Access to Higher Education’ courses were specifically designed to enable non-traditional HE students (e.g. people who have been out of education for a number of years) the ability and option to re-enter education and study to degree level and in many cases beyond.

Foundation degree

Foundation degrees are vocational, higher education qualifications, designed in consultation with employers and universities. Foundation degrees will qualify people to act as “Advanced Practitioners” in their chosen profession and can be updated to full degrees with additional study.

Honours degree

A BA (Hons) is an undergraduate bachelor’s degree awarded for either a course or a program in either the liberal arts, the sciences or both. A bachelor of arts degree programme generally lasts three years.

HND

The Higher National Diplomas are higher education qualifications awarded in vocational subjects. These qualifications can prepare you for employment, or can be used to gain entry to a university course.

HNC

Higher National Certificates are higher education certificates, usually studied on a part-time basis. They are given for vocational training that supplements the learner within a particular area.

NVQ

National Vocational Qualifications are work-based qualifications which are competence based and reflect the skills and knowledge you need to do your job at an appropriate level. 4

Entry level

Entry level courses are aimed at learners who have few or no formal academic qualifications or wish to improve their qualifications. Students are provided with the opportunity to improve their literacy, numeracy, personal and social skills while developing a range of vocational experiences.

Level 1

These first level further education courses give the learner a basic knowledge, skills and the ability to apply learning with guidance or supervision.

Level 2

These intermediate level further education courses offer learners a good knowledge and understanding of a subject and the ability to perform a variety of tasks with some guidance or supervision. Level 2 qualifications are also relevant for many job roles.

Level 3

These advanced level further education courses prepare learners to enter the workplace or university, offering them the ability to gain or apply a range of knowledge, skills and understanding at a detailed level.

Levels 4/5

These higher education level courses are at a professional level and give learners specialised, high-level knowledge in their chosen area. These are appropriate for people working in technical and professional jobs who are managing and developing others.
