Dave Elliott is one of the go-to headline acts on the Northern Irish Circuit. As one of the stars of the BBC NI show the ‘Lockdown Rave’ and co-host of the popular BBC Radio Ulster show ‘The Shane Todd Show’, Dave has been making waves since hitting the comedy circuit.

Armagh native and self-confessed attention-seeking middle child Darren Matthews has been gigging worldwide for ten years and is back on home soil and wanting to tell you all about his adventures.

Comedian, actress and writer Diona Doherty is making waves in the entertainment world from all angles. You may know her from ‘Derry Girls’, ‘Give My Head Peace’, ‘Soft Border Patrol’ or as the only permanent female panellist on ‘The Blame Game’.

Known for off his off-the-cuff, bumbling observational style, Ciaran Franco [‘Show Me The Funny’ finalist, Sunflower Comedy Club, ‘Suited and Booted’] is a new face on the Irish scene but has quickly taken to it.

Tracy Lord is getting married. The only thing is, the wedding is happening at her family home and her ex-husband lives right next door and does everything he can to make her fall back in love with him. Featuring a Cole Porter score and the classic songs ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ and ‘Well, Did You Evah’, as well as a guest appearance by Louis Armstrong, this is a wonderful light musical to cheer everyone up. Starring legends of the Silver Screen, Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra, this musical has lots of singing, dancing and toe tapping tunes that will stick in your head long after the film is over.

The Ulster Orchestra is delighted to perform once more at The Market Place, and Leslie Suganandarajah will be your guide as we start our evening in the Caribbean!

Eleanor Alberga’s serenade, Nightscape, invites you to listen to the cicadas, geckos and jazzy parties of Jamaica at night, before soothing you to sleep with a lullaby after all that fun.

Nightscape was written for similar instrumentation as that used by Mozart, which provides a neat link into the first of two concertos for Horn and Orchestra. GCSE Music students will be familiar with Mozart’s Fourth Horn Concerto, a cheerful, high-energy work with a soulful central movement and hunting calls galore in its famous finale.

Ruth Gipps draws on both Mozart’s concerto structure and the jazz and blues influences heard in Nightscape for her own Horn Concerto. An evening of upbeat joy draws to a conclusion with Mozart’s exuberant Symphony No. 36, Linz. This concert is certain to shake off the January blues!

This film is being screened in commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day 2023.

In 1939, young Italian Jew Guido Orefice [Roberto Benigni] travels with his friend Ferruccio to Arezzo, where his uncle has promised to help set him up with a bookshop. Guido immediately falls in love with beautiful gentile Dora [Nicoletta Braschi], and eventually woos her away from local fascist official Rodolfo.

Guido and Dora marry, have a son, Giosué, and are very happy. However, when war breaks out a few years later, Guido and Giosué are moved to a Nazi concentration camp. Determined to protect his son from the horrors of war, Guido tells him that the camp is all part of a game, and that Giosué’s prize will be a life-size version of the toy tank he loves to play with. The film won three Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actor for Roberto Benigni.

Their latest release received five 2020 IBMA nominations and the title song ‘Chicago Barn Dance’ received the 2020 IBMA Song of the Year Award.

Ulster Touring Opera returns to The Market Place Theatre for the opening night of Rossini’s ‘The Barber of Seville’. Figaro, town barber and jack-of-all-trades, is going to need all his wiles to outwit old Dr Bartolo and make sure true love wins the day.

Northern Irish mezzo-soprano Sarah Richmond sings Rosina in an international cast featuring South African baritone Njabulo Madlala as the industrious barber and rising English star Jack Roberts as the lovestruck Count. Following his success in UTO’s ‘A Night At The Opera’ tour, Belfast baritone Malachy Frame re-joins the company in the role of Basilio, and Spanish soprano Lorena Paz Nieto takes on the fiery role of Berta.

Performed by two outstanding young actors, who effortlessly create all the characters of their Tudor world, ‘The Trumpet & The King’ is a play about music, belonging and friendship across religious and cultural divides, which will draw you effortlessly into the dramatic world of the early Tudors. Declan was born in the heart of Ireland in Drumlish Co Longford, at a unique period of time in the music scene worldwide. A revolution in rock and pop brought us The Beatles, Elvis, and the Rolling Stones, while here in Ireland the magnificent showband boom was about to explode.

A young man growing up at that time, Declan was being heavily influenced by these greats and indeed was getting the rare opportunity to see most of the top showbands appear in his native town. He would cajole his mother into seeing Joe Dolan, Big Tom, Philomena Begley, The Capital Showband, and many more perform. From his vantage point close to the stage, he would absorb every move made by the guitarist in the bands, watching his fingers slide along the strings, hoping that one day he might be up there performing just like Dan O’Hara or Seamus McMahon.

Declan has gone on to have a super career that has spanned over four decades at the top of Irish Country Music, winning many accolades along the way and scoring countless hits with his catalogue of trademark songs. Join him and his super live band for a nostalgic night of music, song and laughter.

It’s Eddy the Teddy’s birthday. He told his best friend Sammy Ragdoll that he’d love a surprise. Sammy decides to throw a party and to make it a bigger surprise, she pretends to forget his birthday. The plan backfires as Eddy wanders off feeling sorry for himself.

He’s wandered off without any breakfast and is soon hungry. Jack Blackbird, Pat the Dog and Robert the Frog offer him a worm, a bone and some flies but these don’t appeal. What makes matters worse, is that he’s now lost.

Meanwhile Sammy is searching for Eddy to get him to the party and give him some honey for his present. Will she find him in time? The show uses many elements of theatre, mime, puppetry and songs to join in with. It’s a perfect introduction to live entertainment for children who’ve never been to a show before, and a welcome return for Eddy the Teddy’s young fans.

It’s Rose’s 10th birthday party. The room is full of bubbly people, friends and family, all coming to celebrate. The party vibe changes when Rose receives a music box as a gift, and the winding key breaks off. Rose escapes for some quiet time and on the way becomes distracted by the record player in the attic, which appears to be drawing her in. Rose goes to play a record and pricks her finger, falling into a deep sleep. When she wakes up, she’s 16 years old and finds herself in the most fantastical forest world full of obscure characters, familiar faces and 80’s inspired music.

Will she fix the music box? What lessons will Rose learn on her journey through the enchanted forest? When will she wake up?

Sleeping Beauty is a modern adaption of the well-known fairy tale. The production has been carefully crafted by a team of deaf and hearing artists and places visual storytelling and BSL interpreting at the centre of the production. The audience experience has also been constructed with attention to detail, paying particular attention to vibrational experience in storytelling, making this an accessible, enjoyable, high quality and equal theatre experience for d/Deaf and hearing audiences.

This workshop draws upon the historical process of hand printing techniques onto Irish linen using natural plant material to create unique artworks. You will use fresh seasonal and dried foliage and the associated folklore and symbolism of plants to create a range of artworks that connect to the local landscape through expressive marks and patterns. Working with coloured paints and inks you will learn how to create washed backgrounds to complement your printed plant and foliage designs.

Mary Montague is a poet, novelist and nature writer. She has authored two highly praised collections of poetry and her work has been published in numerous anthologies and journals, and translated into several languages. She is the recipient of the 2019 Poetry Ireland Tyrone Guthrie Centre Mid-Career Bursary, and several awards from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Her first novel is forthcoming. FUSED GLASS EASTER LANDSCAPE

Join expert glass artist Keith Sheppard for this fused glass workshop to create a beautiful 20” x 10” freestanding curved glass landscape or two 10” x 10” glass landscapes. The freestanding piece will look stunning set close to a window or in the evenings will glow beautifully with a small candle set behind it. The two flat glass landscapes can be set in one or two mounted box frames and hung as a decorative artwork on the wall. Working with different coloured glass Keith will teach you various design techniques; demonstrate the tools required for glass cutting and how to work safely and handle glass with confidence. The Arts Care Artists-in-Residence in the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, Jill McKeown and Eddie Rafferty, facilitate participants to create artwork for themselves and to enhance their environments.

This work is a testimony to the impact art has on staff, service users, family and visitors to the Southern Health and Social Care Trust.

Ulster Woodturning seeks to promote, develop and support the craft of woodturning throughout Northern Ireland. Based at The Wood Shed, Templepatrick, it provides opportunities for wood turners of all levels to come together, share ideas and explore all aspects of the craft. Ulster Woodturning has a strong web presence through Facebook and the internet, and has strong links with professional and amateur turners from all over the world.

This national exhibition of work, the first since re-establishing activities after Covid, seeks to show the quality of work and the wealth of woodturning produced by members who found themselves isolated in sheds, workshops and garages throughout the pandemic.

Co Armagh Artist, Mairead Duffy exhibits Memory Lane, a series of mixed media landscapes. Take time to stop, reflect and appreciate life in all its beauty.

Memory Lane pays homage to my childhood walks with my Granny. Like many people, growing up in rural Armagh the outdoors was our playground. Granny knew the importance of a good walk before it became fashionable. My siblings and I would walk after her knowing we would hear a few yarns along the way with a few sweets in her apron pocket. We foraged the hedgerows for blackberries and gooseberries. Even though I have travelled widely, those memories have stayed with me.

VESTIGES SHORE COLLECTIVE

Vestiges can be a small part of something larger, where that small something becomes more important than what existed originally. It is not the remains, but the remainder or the trace of what once was that becomes notable. A fragment of what is gone and past. The exploration of paint residue on a surface, art created from remnants and remainders, narratives inspired by memory, fading customs and traditions, people and places. The exhibition promises to be full of colour and texture, evoke memories of place and time, using a rich variety of media. Shore Collective studio is based in Lurgan, Co Armagh.

Self-taught print making artist Tina McGleenan works from her home studio in Armagh. Tina’s work is primarily hand-pulled silkscreen printing on paper, with some mixed media textile works.

The inspiration for Solace comes from my home, the poetry I have been reading and travels around Ireland for the past two years. The natural world is at the heart of all my work, expressed in an abstract form using colour, charcoal, crayon and inks. This I hope brings an additional dimension to my work creating movement and fluidity.

Our ancestors’ spirit and energy influence and shape our very being. They walked this land, they toiled its sod, told their stories and sang their songs. They lived, they loved, they endured and left their mark. We now are the legacy, the storytellers and custodians of their memory.

Using the medium of kiln formed glass as well as repurposed natural and man-made objects, South Armagh artist Tracey Mc Verry celebrates this deeply felt, multi-layered connection with her ancient and recent ancestors, visually honouring their frugality, their energy, their strength and their whispered echoes.

Discounts for some performances are also offered to senior citizens, carers of disabled patrons, students and the unemployed [relevant proof of eligibility will be required]. Tickets for all the above must be paid for in person.

We reserve the right to make special offers on tickets throughout the season. Offers cannot be claimed retrospectively [under any circumstances] on tickets already purchased.

TICKETS CANNOT BE EXCHANGED OR REFUNDED

Once purchased, your ticket is your property. The Market Place Theatre cannot refund its value to you, nor exchange it for any other ticket under any circumstances. If you cannot attend the performance for any reason, you have the option of selling or giving your ticket to another person.
