HOME OF ST. PATRICK FESTIVAL Armagh is at the heart of celebrating the life of Patrick and the “Home of St. Patrick Festival” promises a lively and varied showcase of the best culture, music and spirituality.

S

aint Patrick still fascinates as one of the most enduring of all the saints. Renowned for converting Ireland to Christianity centuries ago, his profile remains iconic. It was in Armagh that Patrick began his Christian mission and established the city as the island’s spiritual capital. The festival will provide an unrivalled mix of regional and international music, theatre, spoken word, art and comedy, showcasing the stunning locations where he walked and worked. With events taking place across the city, visitors can enjoy the work of world-renowned artists and performers including Brian Finnegan and Friends with an evening of musical inspiration.

Enjoy “The Táin Tapestries,” an exhibition by Louis Le Brocquy, considered an international painter of renowned. With a focus on the arts, enjoy the JB Vallely in the Landscape tour, which travels to sites of interest and connections to this most esteemed artist. THE TÁIN TAPESTRIES - LOUIS LE BROCQUY (1916-2012) EXHIBITION LAUNCH 7.00pm // 1 The Market Place Gallery Louis le Brocquy (1916-2012) is considered one of Ireland’s foremost painters, exhibited at galleries across the world. The Táin Tapestries grew out of le Brocquy’s remarkable set of illustrations for the translation of the Táin legend by the poet Thomas Kinsella. The Táin legend was the heroic story of the war between Ulster and the men of Connaught over the famous brown bull of Cooley. This wonderful exhibition affords a rare opportunity to experience le Brocquy’s powerful combination of visual and narrative skills. The exhibition continues until Saturday 4 May. “CHERISHING MYTHOLOGY” ARMAGH ART CLUB

Normal theatre opening hours // 1 The Market Place Theatre - Foyer Walls Armagh Art Club’s Biennial Exhibition takes a journey through mythology, linking with many of the myths and legends familiar to all. From their individual approaches and variety of skills and techniques, the artists open up the inspirational world of make believe and imagination, woven though by threads of reality. The exhibition continues until 6 April.

MANNY MAN DOES THE HISTORY OF IRELAND 7.00pm - 8.30pm // £13.50 / £11.50 Concession. Family of 4 £40.00; £10.00 for each additional child //  The Market Place Theatre John D Ruddy brings Manny Man and the History of Ireland to the stage. Watch Syn and Oppy as they plough through years of our history with illustrated cutouts and craziness! From the Ice Age all the way to Ireland today and all in less than 90 minutes, with the same tongue-in-cheek humour Manny Man is known for. Suitable for age 8 years+.

11.00am - 1.00pm // 2.00pm - 4.00pm £3.00 //  Navan Centre & Fort Learn some basic calligraphy skills followed by a screening of the multi-award winning “The Secret of Kells” animation about a boy living in medieval Ireland who must complete a magic manuscript. With the Viking hordes approaching, the future of the precious book is in jeopardy, and it falls to Brendan, young nephew of the Abbot Cellach, to save the day. Suitable for age 8 years+ with some scary scenes.

JB VALLELY IN THE LANDSCAPE COACH TOUR 11.00am - 3.00pm // £25.00 //  Tour departing from & returning to the Palace Demesne JB Vallely burst onto the international art scene during the World Fair in New York in 1963. Experience a unique insight into the stories, landscapes and history that have influenced his work including Cuchulainn and the Ulster Cycle, Armagh’s road bowling, Gaelic games, athletics and musicians. Join JB Vallely for this unique coach tour and hear first-hand of some of the places which have influenced his amazing paintings. A light lunch will be provided. SEAN O’CASEY HIS LIFE & TIMES 4.00pm - 5.00pm // £3.00 // Armagh Robinson Library //  “Th’ whole worl’s in a terrible state o’ chassis” Sean O’Casey was the first playwright of note to write about the working classes of his home city of Dublin. His renowned ‘Dublin Trilogy’ continues to be performed across the globe. Iain Frazer’s presentation of his life and times will explore the social environment that shaped his life and influenced his work as arguably one of the greatest dramatists of the time!

SATURDAY 9 MARCH SING TO ME 2.00pm - 3.00pm // £5.00 //  The Market Place Theatre Kyle Riley’s “Sing to Me” tour features traditional children’s music and some tunes for adults. Enjoy the fast-paced ‘Astronaut’, or the slower “Do You Ever Feel Sad About The Dinosaurs?” and even a song about wallabies! Join us for an hour of engaging and entertaining folk/rock music which is sure to get the audience moving and having fun. Suitable for age 1-7 years.

GANGS OF NEW YORK 7.00pm - 9.40pm // £4.00 //  The Market Place Theatre Martin Scorsese’s ‘Gangs of New York’ introduces today’s world to the Five Points, a dark corner of the city known to New Yorkers of long ago as the centre of vice and chaos. Into this frontier of extreme lawlessness arrives the young Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio). Amsterdam is the orphaned son of the slain Priest Vallon (Liam Neeson) – once chief warrior of the Dead Rabbits gang that rallied the “Irish Immigrants of the Five Points”. Contains strong, bloody violence. Strictly over 18’s only.

THE BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE BY MARTIN MCDONAGH

8.00pm - 10.30pm // £14.00 / £12.00 Concession //  The Market Place Theatre In a small house on a big hill in County Galway, the Folan women live out an uneasy truce. Forty-year-old Maureen and her elderly but iron-willed mother Mag spend their days in endless rounds of insults and physical threats as each manoeuvres for control of their isolated existence. However, when an old family friend reappears and offers Maureen a chance at love and a new life, this once-benign terrain grows treacherous and the two women, bound by blood but driven by desperation, will do anything to survive. Presented by the Bardic Theatre.

CELEBRATE ST. PATRICK 8.00pm - 10.00pm // £5.00 //  St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cathedral Join composer and presenter John Anderson as he conducts a celebratory and reflective event honouring Saint Patrick. A range of choirs unite in a unique evening of music and spoken word in the beautiful Cathedral setting. A limited number of audience places are available and some seats may have restricted views. The event may be recorded for future broadcast and marketing purposes.

THE IRELAND OF PATRICK:

STORYTELLING WITH SEAMAS MACANNAIDH

AN INTRODUCTION TO CELTIC SPIRITUALITY 3.00pm - 4.30pm // £5.00 //  Navan Centre & Fort In the fifth century Christianity made a major impact here. This session will explore elements of early Christianity and, in particular, how indigenous Celtic culture influenced the development of Christianity and still resonates with us today. There will also be an opportunity to visit the Iron Age dwelling, where through Living History characters you will be afforded the opportunity to ask questions of Saint Patrick himself! The session will finish in the coffee shop with tea, cake and further informal conversations.

11.00am - 12.00pm // 1  // The Market Place Studio Theatre Seamas MacAnnaidh is a storyteller, writer and historian from Fermanagh who has published many books in English and Irish. In ‘St. Patrick was a Gentleman’ Seamas presents a madcap selection of stories and legends based around the life and adventures of Saint Patrick. Saint and superhero he visited every corner of the country leaving his footprints on stones, digging wells, lighting fires and of course banishing snakes. But, you know, you haven’t heard the half of it!

AN EVENING WITH PATRICK

Marking an amazing 53 years of the Armagh Pipers Club, the annual concert this year will feature groups and soloists, both vocalists and instrumentalists representing upwards of 300 performers of all ages from 4 years old to over 70! The array of instruments that will be played include Harps, Uilleann Pipes, Flutes, Whistles, Concertinas, Accordions, Banjos, Mandolins, Fiddles, Piano and Guitars.

PATRICK’S SYMPOSIUM ON MIGRATION 10.00am - 1.00pm // 1 � The Market Place Theatre Following on from the examination of Modern Slavery in 2018, this symposium will explore the theme of migration within a modern context. The 21st century is witnessing unprecedented movement of peoples due to famine, war, economic deprivation and climate change. This symposium will examine what can be done, what is being done and, crucially, what should be done. Refreshments will be provided. This project is funded through the PEACE IV Programme of Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon Borough Council.

BY SEAMUS HEANEY 8.00pm - 9.00pm // £13.50 / £11.50 Concession //  Johnston Building, The Shambles Yard The Home of St. Patrick Festival is delighted to welcome The Lyric Theatre with its rendition of Seamus Heaney’s epic poem Station Island. Heaney’s literary pilgrimage of St. Patrick’s Purgatory, steeped in ritual, memory, and ghostly visions, explores his complex relationship with his homeland, his faith and the past. This dramatic reading of the poem is accompanied by composers and performers Paul Stapleton and Steve Davis who provide a unique improvised live musical interpretation of the text.

I SHALL WEAR PURPLE 8.00pm - 10.00pm // £13.50 / £11.50 Concession //  The Market Place Theatre C21 Theatre Company take us to Malinderry Care Home - Olivia suffers from “age rage” and is fighting to leave. Thomas who runs art therapy classes is fighting to stay. When they meet, youth and experience collide in a scintillating, hilarious clash of culture. Olivia learns how to paint the town red (or purple!) but for how long can they both challenge the authorities?

7.30pm - 9.30pm // £5.00 // 3 Mulberry Bistro, 6 Cathedral Rd, Armagh BT61 7QX Flash Fiction is a unique experience which gives writers an opportunity to gain immediate audience reaction to their work. Réamonn Ó’Ciaráin and Byddi Lee will be the masters of ceremonies for this intimate event. FREAK SHOW 8.00pm - 10.00pm // £13.50 / £11.50 Concession //  The Market Place Theatre Big Telly Theatre Company’s Freak Show is inspired by the true story of a giantess from Portrush called Mary Murphy who married a French sea captain, danced for William of Orange and was then exhibited across Europe in a travelling freak show. Freak Show examines themes of performance, exploitation and consent and reflects a contemporary fascination with fame, scandal and privacy. Clashing dark with light, it will contain maximum craic and heartbreak in spades. And an Irish jig. On stilts. Suitable for 12 years+

What he achieves on a stage cannot be adequately described by audience members, critics or fellow comics! Thus, his legendary shows become a secret shared experience among his audience. With a theme of “Invention & Innovation”, celebrate our patron saint with a spectacular display of colour, music, dance and entertainment for all to enjoy as our wonderful procession snakes its way through the city centre. The procession route is from the Palace Demesne, Irish Street, Ogle Street, Thomas Street, Market Street and English Street, onto Cathedral Road, past the Shambles Yard before finishing at the grounds of Cathedral Road Recreation Centre. Our festivities continue with a family fun afternoon from 1.45pm - 4.30pm in the Shambles Yard.

Join with St. Patrick and through the bursts of early sunlight cast an eye back to what life and faith may have been like before his arrival and his introduction of Christianity to Ireland. This event will include song, story and breakfast for all attendees. As parts of this event will take place outside, please dress accordingly. Light refreshments will be served

The Primates of all Ireland, Archbishops Clarke and Martin, invite you and your family to commemorate St. Patrick’s Day at a special joint event in the shared space between our two magnificent Cathedrals. This symbolic expression of the unity of the Churches is a reflection of St. Patrick’s own journey of unifying people within Christianity.

Have a go at foraging for your food as part of this drop-in family event - find it, see how it was cooked and then taste it for a real experience of how food was prepared during the early Christian era. Suitable for all ages. Please wear appropriate clothing.
