Robert Mizzell was born in Louisiana, USA. Spending his childhood days around the shores of Lake Bistineau, Robert often dreamed of being a country music star. After graduating from Doyline High School, Robert served in the US Army, and after several jobs, events in Robert’s life took him to Ireland. Once there he decided to pursue his dream to be a country music star. Robert has made his home in Ireland for over a decade. He served his apprenticeship in Country Music since he first arrived here and is now one of the top Country artists in Ireland, his popularity spreading with extensive airplay in Europe and such distant territories as Australia. As anyone who ever attended a Robert Mizzell show will testify, Robert with his band The Country Kings put on an energy filled show, brimming with Country flavour. A celebration of reconciliation on the island of Ireland over the last 100 years and the approaching 20th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. Introduced by Olivia O’Leary, and directed by Lynne Parker, the evening will feature a cast of almost twenty of this island’s finest and most respected actors, writers and musicians, including Colette Bryce & Iarla Ó Lionáird, as they look back over the last century and chart the journey of reconciliation from 1916 to the current day through poetry, music, drama and imagery. Readings will include work by Eavan Boland, Colette Bryce, Seamus Heaney, Paul Muldoon, Michael Longley and John Hewitt in this moving and evocative evening.

Tues 25 July I 8.30pm I £10.00 i Lawrence McKeown’s much-acclaimed play explores the painful and humorous realities faced by individuals who patrolled the border during the height of the conflict. Based on an oral archive of serving RUC and An Garda Síochána officers, collected by Diversity Challenges, this new production fuses theatre and film to look at the person behind the uniform and the different experiences of two individuals on either side of a line in the ground. Directed by Paula McFetridge and performed by James Doran and Vincent Higgins, the production challenges assumptions about policing in our heritage and opens a discussion on the future of policing in Ireland.

This 21st century line-up infuses the band’s inherited music with a bewildering range of influences from gypsy jazz to contemporary pop music, and from mainstream European classical music to sentimental Irish-American ballads. ‘A TIME TO SPEAK’ Thur 27 July I 8.30pm I £12.00 i Born in 1917, Helen Lewis was forced to live in a Jewish ghetto in her native Czechoslovakia before being deported to Auschwitz during the Second World War. She managed to survive the horrors of the camp, and after the war she came to Belfast where she started a new life. A noted dancer and choreographer, she taught and inspired many dancers in her adopted city.
Helen told her remarkable story in a memoir, ‘A Time To Speak’, before her death in Belfast in 2009. Now Sam McCready has adapted for stage the dancer, choreographer and Holocaust survivor’s remarkable story of courage and survival in the Nazi Concentration Camps. This award-winning production is being performed by Joan McCready to mark the centenary of Helen’s birth.

It was adapted for broadcast as BBC Radio 4’s ‘Book Of The Week’ in March when it was read by Armagh-born actor, John Paul Connolly. Author and mapmaker, Garrett Carr provides introductions and John Paul will read extracts from the book which explores the turbulent history of our border landscape and changes the way we look at nationhood, land and power.
A not-to-be-missed double bill of poetry with an award-winning American poet and one of the UK’s most popular writers! Since the publication of his first collection, ‘Turtle, Swan’, in 1987, Mark Doty has been recognized as one of the most accomplished poets in America. Hailed for his elegant, intelligent verse, he is the highly acclaimed author of nine books of poetry, including ‘Deep Lane’, ‘Fire To Fire: New and Selected Poems’, which won the 2008 National Book Award, and ‘My Alexandria’, winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and he was the first American to win the TS Eliot Prize in the UK.
Lanarkshire-born Liz Lochhead has lived mostly in Glasgow since studying painting at Glasgow School Of Art [1965-70]. The first collection to bring her to notice was ‘Memo For Spring’. Subsequent poetry collections include ‘Dreaming Frankenstein’ [1984], ‘The Colour Of Black & White’ [2003], ‘A Choosing, Selected Poems’ [2011] and ‘Fugitive Colours’ [2016]. In January 2011 she began her five- year stint as the second Scottish Makar, or National Poet. She was awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry 2015.

Originally from the Deep South in the United States, Dana grew up with the sound of soul, rhythm and blues and gospel music all around her. Her love for music developed as she grew up and led her to study music, majoring in vocal performance at university. Music took Dana from South Carolina to Minneapolis and then on to Los Angeles where she lived for four years and where she met an Irish boy who would later become her husband. From live work with BBC radio 4 and ‘Proms In The Park’ to singing regularly with Van Morrison, Dana’s reputation as one of Ireland’s top vocalists continues to gain momentum. Dana is very excited to be writing original material again and can’t wait to share that with people! Calling Northern Ireland home, Dana is passionate about music as a vehicle to make people and communities vibrant.
Affectionately known as the ‘Professor’, Pat has been hailed as one of the top 5 Irish guitar players of all time. His rise to fame was rapid. Firstly with his two brothers as ‘Mama’s Boys’, enjoying worldwide success, until the untimely death of brother Tommy. Then with the award winning ‘Celtus’. For the past ten years Pat has headed up his own solo project constantly touring all over Europe along with band mates Paul Faloon and Martin McDermott playing their own brand of blues rock.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and more experienced artists. During the workshop participants will experiment using different techniques such as mark making, blending, feathering, and overlays and learn how pastels can be used in mixed media in painting. Participants will learn how to mix colour via the blending and the overlaying of colours, and will experiment using different types of pastel papers e.g. ingress and sandpaper. Each student will complete their own original pastel painting to take home with them. Participants will need to bring coloured soft pastels. You will create your piece out of silver sheet and wire using traditional hand tools, transferring your pattern, cutting out with a piercing saw, annealing, forming and soldering using a soldering torch. In addition to this you will learn some texturing and embellishing techniques before filing, emerying and polishing to bring your silver pendant to a high quality finish for you to hang on a silver chain provided. INTRODUCTION TO TAPESTRY WEAVING [2 DAY] Come along and participate in exploring some of the techniques of willow basket weaving. With the assistance of experienced craft tutor and basket-maker Sabine Wolniczak from Beaghmore Baskets you will spend the two days making a natural and bespoke round shopper with handle using locally grown, harvested and seasoned willow. Fri 11 & Sat 12 Aug | 10.00am - 4.00pm | £55.00 In this two-day workshop you will learn the foundation skills of tapestry weaving on a simple frame loom. As well as covering the basic techniques, the workshop will encourage individual expression and experimentation. On day one we will focus on learning the basics of plain weave, creating shapes and textural techniques such as rya knotting and sumak, to create a small sampler. Working at your own pace, on day two you will have the chance to create a small abstract wall hanging, exploring texture, colour and composition. All materials will be provided but feel free to bring any favourite yarns from your own stash! The workshop is suitable for adults and young people over the age of 16. Each month creatives, innovators, enthusiasts, inventors and entrepreneurs come together at the Amma Centre for a meetup to inspire, motivate, support and connect this creative community. This exhibition sees several members exhibiting as a collective for the first time. MANY STYLES - REAL 1 & K9 Fri 23 June - Mon 17 July | Gallery | Preview 23 June 7.00pm ‘Many Styles’ is an exhibition of graffiti | street art works and installations by artist Real1 and artist/illustrator K9. As the graffiti | street art culture has become more popular over recent years both artists wished to demonstrate how this art scene has developed and how it is not limited in creativity or style due to its origin. Some works will also reflect upon commercialism and propaganda of today and its impact on society. LAOCH NA LAOCHRA AN EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS BY DARA VALLELY - JOHN HEWITT INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL Mon 24 July - Sat 2 Sept | Gallery & Foyer A textual, visual and theatrical exploration of the story of Cú Chulainn. This exhibition of Ulster legend is comprised of a series of paintings specially commissioned as part of the Belfast-based Irish language festival, Féile An Droichead. The exhibition sees Armagh artist and musician Dara Vallely capture Cú Chulainn’s cultural legacy in a series of vast paintings, with text from Gael Linn’s Réamonn Ó Ciaráin. Ó Ciaráin’s translations tread the fine line between precision and nuance to give descriptions of Vallely’s visual interpretations of the warrior hero.
POETRY & PLACE: A PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION 24 July - 2 September | Foyer Walls The Institute for Conflict Research presents a photographic exhibition by Ards Peninsula Women’s Group. The members have been working under the tutelage of community artist, Jane McComb, to produce an exhibition of photography on the theme of ‘Poetry & Place’. The exhibition will include interpretations of the work of Louis MacNiece, who is buried in the Ards Penninsula. Jane McComb is a photographer living in Holywood, Co Down. Since her original training in France 35 years ago, she has worked in many areas of commercial and art photography, including sports and portraiture work. Jane is a member of the Blackbird Book Club at Queen’s University, Belfast, which studies the work of Irish authors, poets and dramatists.
