30. BLADE FAMILY
31. PLAZA FAMILY
HELLO! Welcome to the new quarterly lifestyle magazine from acdc. Our aim for this new format is to share our recent experiences, to share knowledge of best practice and recently completed projects. Most of all we want to inspire designers and specifiers to be creative with light, to play with light and shadow, to have confidence in giving a space an identity through the integration and application of light. The last few months have seen acdc all over the world launching, discussing, playing and listening to clients talk about light, whether it was in Dubai discussing hospitality trends in the region, or in Stockholm with the launch of the new Urban life outdoor campaign. It has all been about putting light in context and how it helps define the space around us - giving it identity and defining our emotional connection with a space.
In this magazine we wanted to provide an overview of a few case studies, to provide some advice on best practice and also to introduce a few new products along the way. Look forward to getting your feedback – please get in touch. Dan Hodgson Lighting applications director @ acdc

OSIJEK BRIDGE CROATIA
Osijek pedestrian bridge spans the Drava River and is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Opened in 1981, the bridge was completely renovated in 2007. In 2017 the bridge underwent a spectacular transformation with dynamic full colour lighting from acdc. The lighting project was funded by a Coca-Cola marketing campaign, which required citizens to collect more than 100,000 bottle caps. CocaCola launched the campaign to mark 50 years of production in Croatia, and to share its success as an active member of the local community by supporting projects that enhance the lives of citizens.

PROJECT BRIEF
Zumtobel Vice President for BEE and DACH, Saša Pajdić, commented:
Compared to other iconic bridges around the world, Osijek pedestrian bridge was quite literally, left in the dark. Dynamic, full colour lighting was required to highlight the bridge’s beauty and reinforce its iconic status, as well as enhancing the city’s recognisability and attracting tourists. It was important for the lighting to become integral to life in Osijek, and to be the backdrop for many memories and important life moments.
“We were delighted to accept Coca Cola’s invitation to partner with this exciting lighting campaign and recognise the importance of the pedestrian bridge for the City of Osijek.
acdc’s solution acdc was instructed to supply the lighting for the bridge after parent company, Zumtobel Group, was invited to design, supply, install and commission a new lighting solution. The contract was won based on Zumtobel Group’s existing relationship with both Coca Cola and the city of Croatia.
It is an extraordinary honour to illuminate the bridge, which will now attract even more tourists and have an even greater iconic appeal. Not only as a partner but also as a citizen of Osijek, I feel extremely proud and privileged to be part of such an important and transformational project.” The installation of the new lighting had a tight time-frame of just one week. More than 20,000 people attended the ceremony to celebrate the switch on of the lights, which were set to red to reflect the Coca Cola brand.

EXPLORE BLADE MAX is a mains onboard linear wallwash luminaire designed to evenly wash the vertical, with a fully dimmable 4 channel driver from 0-100% with no flickering. A single, combined power and data cable for a minimal, seamlessly integrated appearance. Enabling loop in/loop out wiring ensures that minimal additional mains cables are required, which is especially beneficial given that it is used along the full length (210 meters) of the bridge.
FUSION is an intelligent, highly efficient, IP66 architectural floodlight, which delivers 2000lm in single colour, colour change or dynamic white. Despite its small size, Fusion offers a high output as well as focused light with minimal light pollution. Strong colour saturation ensures a vivid colour display while, as with all acdc luminaires, 2-step MacAdam ellipse guarantees colour consistency.

OXFORD STREET LONDON
DESIGN: LIGHTING DESIGN INTERNATIONAL acdc PRODUCTS: PLAZA FAMILY
12 The application of external architectural lighting to Oxford Street, London by lighting designers Lighting Design International is a classic example of single colour, surface mount, seamless integration of external lighting to enable the building to be valued during the day and come to life in the hours of darkness giving this section of Oxford a real sense of identity and value, creating a clear point of destination. By illuminating all levels the scheme ensures that a visitor raises their eye line and values the height and scale of the buildings, the colour, texture and finish too. acdc are proud to have been involved in this project using the PLAZA family of luminaires and the miniature FINO luminaire from the linear range.
Through careful placement of the luminaires to pick out the architectural features of the building with a narrow medium or wide optic combined with a discreet warm, low level wash the designers have ensured that each level of the building is enhanced, ensuring that each lintel or soffit of the building has a diffused soft edged beam upon it lit creating interest through
Where there is a different finish to the building then two different colours of white have been integrated into the specification to create contrast through the finish and colour of the light applied but retaining the consistency of the narrow beams and wash applied.

Through careful detailing and planning the acdc BLADE MICRO has been integrated at high level to backlight the diffused glass façade, installed end to end to provide a continuous graze backlighting the glazed facade. The RGB format has enabled a fully dynamic lit effect using the Visual Productions CUEcore 2 solid state controller. Careful consideration was given during the design process to review the material specification with mock-ups to assess the lit effect to ensure the luminaire and leds were not visible. To achieve the desired lit effect the Blade Micro has been integrated into a perimeter vertical void that is 200mm deep, the luminaires have been locked off and focussed down the concrete wall to the back that is painted matt white to maximise the intereflection of light within the void. To ensure the façade is framed and the scale appreciated a mirrored finish has been applied to the bottom of the void to enable the light to bounce back into the void and thereby providing a ‘kick back’ of light framing the base of the façade.

OLDHAM TOWN HALL UK
Oldham Old Town Hall is BDP’s £37m multi-award-winning conversion of a Grade II listed former civic building into a state of art cinema and retail shopping centre. A highly contemporary new illuminated façade comprising a translucent glass light wall has created a new identity for Clegg Street. It provides a new entrance and foyers to the cinema areas, a façade towards a new pedestrian square and the Town Square shopping centre, as well as an animated street environment, especially at night.

PROJECT BRIEF The framework for the huge light wall is a steel structure extending 8m out from the original glazed brick façade of the town hall, forming a grand new circulation zone entered from the north side. With the new light wall representing an iconic beacon of the hall’s regeneration, BDP sought a lighting solution which would offer enough power and brightness to effectively illuminate each of the 257 translucent glazed panels. Crucially, the light wall had to
produce a vibrant, modern landmark to create an exciting, welcoming public space and create a dramatic effect from outside. acdc’s SOLUTION BDP specified acdc’s BLADE MICRO luminaire for backlighting the frosted glass panels. This decision was made following several trials and mock-ups of Blade Micro on site, to prove it would meet BDP’s design and performance objectives. Katja Nurminen, Senior Lighting
Designer at BDP, played an integral role in the project. She explains: “Various linear LED wall grazer luminaires were tested on site and we chose acdc’s Blade with extra bright 4200K LEDs. Our final decision was based on site mockups, available glare control, luminaire length, colour temperature, light quality and overall cost. “acdc provided samples for site tests as agreed and offered to be on site for the mock-ups. This proved to be very helpful as several
mock-ups were required to receive approval from all the relevant parties, including designers, architects and the client. The whole process was managed very professionally and the good service acdc provided was crucial to the success of this project.” Paul Whittaker, Project Manager at acdc, adds: “The mock ups were carried out as soon as the first glass panels went in. Because the façade
and new pedestrian square were closed off at the time, we were fortunate this was relatively easy. “Mocking up to define the correct product specification was key, so we tried different LED colours, optics and accessories. Blade Micro proved it was indeed the perfect solution. Its low profile, high output, constant colour binning and wide range of accessories were particularly beneficial for the scale of this project.”

OUTDOOR CAMPAIGN
#URBANLIFE During October acdc had the pleasure of being involved in the first multibrand outdoor roadshow URBAN LIFE LIGHTING. Held in the cities of Stockholm and Lyon, in fantastic buildings with fantastic surroundings. The evenings provided a great opportunity to discuss and share outdoor lighting application with many clients, the Zumtobel sales team and for Dan Hodgson our Application Director to present the considerations required when lighting outdoor facades.
A fantastic event where we were able to share our knowledge and passion for architectural lighting. Thank you to everyone who attended and to everyone involved in making the first roadshow a great success‌

HOW TO DESIGN FOR BACK LIGHTING FACADES
3 COMMON METHODS BACKLIGHTING When backlighting a façade where there is no enclosed void behind, one should consider how the space behind is to be lit and the effect other layers of light may have upon the façade. It may be that the strong lit effect is only at its most effective when the ambient lighting behind it is off. Consider the spacing of the luminaires and the offset distance with either a linear fitting and a linear beam for a constant graze, or offset away from the front with a higher output flood and a medium beam. Carefully plan to avoid any long dramatic shadows that could be created by the luminaire position.
Modern building techniques and new materials combined with the need to create new public spaces and an identity defining urban points of destination have encouraged integrated lighting techniques as an alternative to applying light with projectors. Back lit luminous façades can be static, dynamic, homogeneous or a graze, with acdc’s experience in facade lighting we will look to provide some basic techniques and considerations for how to achieve the best lit effect for your project.
GET TO KNOW THE DETAIL OF YOUR FACADE
UNDERSTAND THE FACADE MATERIAL SPECIFICATION
Get to know the structure of and around the façade, are there any changes that can be made to achieve the desired lit effect, discuss the methods and lit effect desired with the design team. What are the viewpoints externally and internally of the façade? Does the design need to consider how people will interact with the design?
This is the key to the success of the night-time appearance. Try to get a sample of the façade material and understand its response to light. Can you see the light source through the glass? What is the make up of the void behind? Is it open or an enclosed void?
GRAZE To provide a continuous graze within an enclosed void – establish how deep the void is or can be and plan whether it is a linear run of luminaires at the top or bottom or both, flooding the space behind. It is recommended that the luminaires are directed towards the back surface, which is in a matt finish and not towards the glass as this will risk the luminance at the top/ bottom being too high.
HOMOGENOUS
COORDINATION TEAM EFFORT Get the investment from the full design team and the client, coordinate the design with them, this lit effect will define the identity of the building in the hours of darkness, think of shadows that could be detract from the view, this might include cabling, drivers, structural elements.
MOCK UP Careful planning and a thorough approach to the lighting design development with the architect and end user will be required to ensure the desired lit effect is provided. A small mock-up, or part full scale mock-up is often considered to ensure all parties sign off the lit effect too, whilst at great cost it ensures all parts are coordinated before being on site.
LUMINAIRE CHOICE Consider the position of the luminaire and the beam angle required – whether it is an internal and external luminaire is suitable, and if a linear source providing a continuous end to end graze is required or a flood with a wide beam offset from the façade is more suitable.
For a more homogeneous lit effect consideration should be given to a regular array of LED luminaires with a beam angle of or more than 140 degrees, of which the distance from the façade to the front of the luminaire should be equal to or not less than the distance between the luminaires. Should the façade design require backlit windows, then the specifier should consider how they can be converted into light boxes and whether the light should be single colour or colour change, and how this might be controlled. A light box usually will have an opal finish to the front with all matt white surfaces inside to assist in the intereflection of the light and create the homogeneous lit effect required.
