On a cold frosty morning in Holland, Minnesota, I was visiting Helen and John Blankers, of Silver Hills Kennel. I saw this little feisty blue bitch with a spot on her back. She was climbing over her brothers to get to the top of the pile to see me. I feel in love at first sight, but had a house full of dogs‌..driving back home to Texas, all I could think about was this little feisty girl. I called Peggy. She had bought a male ACD from me, and I proceeded to tell her that I thought this little girl would make an excellent addition to her family‌...the rest is history. DB ruled the house from the moment she stepped foot in the door, Cobber never had a chance. Sleep well DB. Deb Casey

Meet Shiloh‌ a beautiful blue speckled that just arrived 12/08/10 from an IL kill shelter. Shiloh is living with her foster mom, Jill. What a sweet dog. Shiloh appears house broke. She likes other dogs not sure about cats as of yet. Updates coming soon. Australian Cattle Dog Rescue of IL has several nice cattle dogs for adoption. Some play ball and/or frisbee, Some have the drive needed for rally, obedience, search and rescue, detection work, agility, disc and more. We do get in dogs that will work cattle and then we get dogs in that have no interest in herding cows. Come take a look, you will surely take one home !

The dogs receive training in social skills, farm life (around machinery, farm animals. behaving off leash, and around farm cats and scenarios), Many of the dogs can receive training in herding to some degree. Dogs can be evaluated for ability to compete in agility, obedience, herding, flyball, and other dog sports. Hip x-rays prior to adoption can be arranged for those interested in a dog for performance events. Some specialized training for dogs is also available. Shoot the Dog (at a Herding Trial) by Jeff Jaquish Introduction I have always wanted to put on a class just for this specific purpose, to help others take great pictures of Australian Cattle Dogs doing what they were bred to do. I have shot literally thousands and thousands of images of herding dogs working livestock at trials, clinics on farms and ranches. In the process I have learned a few things and you may find a few of my tips helpful. Keep in mind I am not a writer and I don't enjoy writing. What I do enjoy is talking about photography, coffee, dogs and my four beautiful little granddaughters (not in order of priority). I started photography in high school and continued to learn and improve little by little. I had a commercial photography course in college, numerous workshops, seminars and read photography related materials for enjoyment. Today I supply advertising agencies, book publishers, magazines, websites and corporate clients with images. I have designed and self-published an ACD calendar of cattle dogs working cattle for 2011. I have been to many herding clinics and competed in sheep and cattle trials. I had the privilege of training a dog to several herding titles. The combined experience of photography, trial, and herding dog experience has given me a unique perspective which has been very valuable as I pursue capturing images of great dogs. There are may ways to approach photography and for every opinion I have, there may be dozens of opposing views. The main thing about photography to me is getting that “one” image which causes your eye to linger a little longer or to cause the viewer to come back for a second look. With canine photography, I find specific satisfaction in capturing a dog working hard, playing hard or just being a best friend. The secret to photography nowadays with digital cameras is to get out and take a lot of pictures. Sooner or later, a good image will pop up by mistake and in the process your skills will improve and you will develop a critical eye. I feel very fortunate if I get one “keeper” out of 100 frames of action images. Before we get into specifics, there is one absolute rule when photographing a herding trial. You can NEVER do anything to disturb or disrupt the run. Exhibitors have spent many hours training, traveling, spending money for entries and lodging just to compete Page 1

in the trial. If you don't know know about livestock and what subtle things you can do to influence the run then you have no business being close to the fences.

The Camera OK, let's get to the fun stuff. If you are using a point and shoot camera, you are going to have a very difficult time getting a good action shot. There is an inherent lag time of almost one second from the time the action takes place to the time it shows in an electronic viewfinder or onto the screen. Add your reaction time into the equation and you'll end up with a lot of disappointing shots. You would need to have some super human powers of anticipation to get many good shots with a point and shoot camera. That's why some people call them “point and pray” cameras.

This is my minimal equipment when shooting an event. From top to bottom: Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM, Canon EOS 1D Mark IIn with Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, Canon EOS 5D with Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM and a Canon EF 1.4X II Extender. © Jeff Jaquish Let's assume you are going to use a Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera. There are many on the market both new and used and models keep appearing left and right. Which one is Page 2

the best for shooting herding dog action shots? I recommend staying with either Canon or Nikon. The selection of lenses and accessories as well as a robust used market are huge considerations. Any camera model is fully capable of providing what you need to shoot action images. Most models will be capable of shooting three to five frames per second. The more frames per second your camera can capture, the chances may improve to catch the image you desire.

Setting the Camera for Action Photography Many cameras will have a setting intended for Action photography. If you don't want to make decisions on depth of field, f-stop, shutter speed or ISO then this is the setting for you. If you choose this setting, the camera makes all the decisions, but they may not be the best for what you are shooting. If you want to venture beyond automatic settings then you should know a little more about the basics of f-stop, ISO and shutter speed. Knowing those things is the foundation of photography. A book I frequently recommend for learning the basics is by Bryan Peterson, “Understanding Exposure”. If you have the choice of shooting in RAW format or jpg, then I would use RAW. The RAW image file is the digital equivalent of a film negative. The RAW file contains all the information captured by the sensor and has not been compressed or altered by your camera's processing chip. If you are shooting jpgs, your processor is doing a lot to the image file. Depending how you have set up your camera to handle jpgs, you could be sharpening, changing contrast, brightening, compressing and many others tasks. The nice thing about shooting in RAW is that you can recover from exposure errors and many other mistakes more readily than with jpgs. There are only two reasons not to shoot in RAW. The first is since there is no compression, the RAW files are larger and require more space on your memory card. Also, some people say that it takes longer to handle the larger file and write it to memory. If I am shooting action outdoors at a trial and the light is not changing, I will shoot in 'M' (manual) mode which means I am making the exposure decisions and telling the camera to relax, just worry about putting the image neatly into storage. If the subjects are going in and out of shadows or clouds passing over the sun, I'll shoot in 'Av' mode (aperture priority). I know you may be asking right now “But Jeff, if you are shooting action, don't you want to set the camera in 'Tv' mode (shutter priority)?” Nope. By choosing Av mode, I am also determining what my depth of field is going to be. An f-stop of f2.8 is going to give me a shallow depth of field where a f8 is going to increase what is going to be in focus. I may use f2.8 if I want a distracting background to be blurred. If I am shooting a cattle run I may want both the cattle and the dog in focus Page 3

so I'll choose f8 or f11. Most sports shooters will shoot in Av if they can't shoot in M mode.

This is the view from my Canon EOS 1D. I will select the lower, middle focus point (the red rectangle) for most of my herding shots. During the run I will also select other auto focus points on the fly. Š Jeff Jaquish When you set the camera in Av mode, you must pay close attention to the shutter speeds the camera is offering. For herding trials, I usually suggest your shutter speed is at least 1/800 second and preferably 1/1000. Any faster than that is not needed. To make sure you are getting shutter speeds fast enough, you'll have to set your ISO (sensor sensitivity) to support your choice of f-stop and shutter speed. In mid day filtered sun, my Av settings will be in the vicinity of f8, ISO 400 and shutters speeds selected by the camera will most likely be above 1/800 second.

The Lens For herding trials a tele-zoom lens works best. Minimally, something similar to a 70200mm would work well but a zoom lens that goes up to 380 or 400 mm may be better Page 4

for you. When you are choosing lenses, do some research first. Both Canon and Nikon make great lenses. Their pro lines of lenses are nearly equal in performance and quality. Both Canon and Nikon have some real stinkers in their consumer grades and “kit lenses. A good lens is better than a good camera. I would rather shoot with an entry level camera with a good lens than shoot with the most expensive camera with a cheap lens. A good lens will be sharper, have better contrast and faster more accurate focusing. If you are being recruited or hired to be the photographer at an event, you are stepping up your responsibilities. You should have a spare camera, spare lenses and be able to shoot if it is raining. In addition to the equipment pictured, I have extra batteries, a charger, extra memory cards, lens cleaning supplies, other special lenses, rain gear (for me and the camera), step stool, ladder, monopod and laptop or other mass storage device.

Meet the Judge I now have my camera ready, the lens is mounted and now it is time to shoot. I will introduce myself to the judge, tell the judge who I am and what I am doing and ask if it is OK to shoot . I will do some small talk explaining that I have done this before, competed in trials and that I'll be especially careful not to disturb the runs. I'll also tell the judge to let me know if I am disturbing anything. I have only had one judge tell me not to get close to the fence even when the livestock, dog and handler were at the other end of the arena. Most times they don't realize I'm around and that's what I strive for.

Positioning Shooting through a fence is not a good strategy. If you are in a stadium, you can usually get clear shots above the fence from the seating area. I like to position myself at the fence and shoot over it into the arena. Shooting at ground level gives a more realistic, familiar angle to the action. Sometimes I take an eight foot step ladder, place it about 20 feet from the fence and shoot down and over the fences. That works well but then you are tied to that ladder for hours. It's not very comfortable at all. Other times I have a small step stool to give me good clearance over the fence. I usually like to stand behind a tarped area near where the stock handlers are working. This way I can duck behind the tarp if the livestock and dog come near. I have gone to a trial where I set up my own tarps on the fence where I thought would be a good vantage point. This gave me a spot to shoot from and offer a place for me to hide when the livestock or dog were heading in my direction. I also cut a flap in the lower portion of the tarp to allow an extreme ground level aspect to shooting. The important thing is to not alter the run by your activity and to gain the confidence of the judge and Page 5

competitors. Look to see where the livestock are going to be released and where the dog will make first contact. You’ll want to position yourself to get those first shots because the run may not last longer than a few moments and capturing those first frames may be the only opportunity given. If it is an AKC 'A' Course, the stock will likely be set out near the repen gate. Also, if the dog loses control of the livestock, the draw will likely be to the area of the re-pen. To a photographer, this is the “hot zone” especially with cattle runs.

For sheep and cattle runs I like to shoot from the area of the corners closest to the drop area and the exhaust pen. © Jeff Jaquish

Sheep Runs versus Cattle Runs When it comes to choosing between the two, I'll always shoot cattle runs. There is much more drama because the dogs are more likely to work closer and make contact. What's better than a classic heading or heeling shot from a herding dog? Quite frankly, shooting sheep runs can get very boring. It is very difficult to get good shots because of the distance the dog needs to maintain from the sheep's flight zone. Good shots are few and far between. When you do get a good smooth shot of proper sheep herding, things are calm and it seems the subjects are spread out over the whole course making it difficult to get them in one shot. Page 6

Sheep Runs At the start of each run, I'll shoot the handler and the dog as they wait at the post. This is true for any dog event. This image is the start of the run and with both the dog and handler in the image lets you know with some certainty their identity. This is essential especially when you are sorting through 1000 images.

This is a shot at the beginning of the run. I use this to index the run so I can identify the dog in successive shots. All the shots between this image and the image of the next handler will be of this dog. This tip can save lots of time and confusion when you are filtering through thousands of images. Š Jeff Jaquish With sheep runs you don't want any shots where the dog is making contact with the sheep. The lone exception is if a sheep is turned towards the dog and challenging. Page 7

Getting shots of a calm moment are good when the sheep are approaching an obstacle, or when there is balance (dog-space-sheep-space-handler). One desirable angle to look for is when the dog is getting around the sheep and as it makes the corner sometimes you can get the dog and sheep appearing to be close together. A telephoto lens will compress distances and can result in a great shot.

I like the angle of this image. When the dog is "getting around" the livestock there is sometimes an opportunity to get a shot like this. I enjoy capturing this type of image more so than the long stretched out "balanced" shot or one with an obstacle. © Jeff Jaquish Sometimes the run will break down. The sheep will break to the draw, the dog will chase and the judge will yell “thank-you” (judges are never thinking “thank-you” when they are yelling that phrase during a run). Sometimes when this happens, I'll snap a few frames of just the isolated dog to get a movement picture. Page 8

When the run goes bad, get an isolated movement picture of the dog. You never know what you'll get! © Jeff Jaquish

What not to shoot during a sheep run? Nobody wants a butt shot, in most cases. Dogs chasing sheep, biting, or heeling are not desired.

Cattle Runs Once again, I'll always take that shot of the dog and handler waiting at the post. I'll position in view of the “hot zone” where the cattle are picked up, re-penned and where the draw is likely to be. Anything goes with cattle runs as long the dog is appropriate. Getting a great heading or heeling shot takes anticipation, reaction, skill and luck. If you have a camera that shoots more frames per second you'll increase your chances but it is not necessary. Calm shots with good spacing are desirable but an action shot is the attention-getter.

Page 9

This is the cropped and adjusted image of the previous cattle picture - ready for framing. This image also demonstrates how getting a shot of the dog framed by the livestock adds another level of interest. Š Jeff Jaquish

Duck Runs I enjoy duck runs. Almost any position will get you a good angle. When shooting duck runs, you must make sure not to be too close to effect the run. When capturing duck runs you should have many opportunities to get intimate shots. Dogs chasing or being aggressive are not appreciated. Good herding dogs are smooth and can move ducks from a distance in most cases.

Page 10

Getting a smooth working shot like this is something to strive for. Once again, the uniqueness of the shot is enhanced by the livestock framing the dog. © Jeff Jaquish

Those are the basics and I hope you find my hints valuable as you try to capture that great herding shot. Remember it is not just the equipment but the photographer's knowledge, experience, skill and luck that captures the image. Sue Scholes STRATHBLUE Australia How long have you been in dogs? Registered in 1987 - 23 years How long have you had Australian Cattle Dogs? Grew up with a variety of dogs mainly cross breeds on the farm. Got my first ACD ( unregistered ) in 1973. Why did you choose the Australian Cattle Dog? Many reasons, I think they are a great Australian breed. It is amazing to see and understand why the breeds were introduced to produce this Wonderful dog. My very first reason for owning an ACD was I needed a companion and guard dog as I was living alone away from home. Why I started to show was because they are incredibly smart, testing with the training and they were the 'underdog' in the ring at the time. How did you decide that this was the breed for you? Being a medium size, short coated, hardy and loyal suited my situation.

How did you first get involved in ACDs? We had a pure bred male ( not registered ), my dingo cross and 2 rescue ACD crosses when I met Phil ( Binshaw Knls ). He had 2 beautiful bitches and after many hours/days talking with him my husband and I decided we would like to purchase a registered ACD and give the showing a go. Phil introduced us to 'Walgee Kennels' and that was the start of our adventure with the ACD's. What do you do with your dogs (i.e. herding, performance, conformation)? I only do Conformation. Have had some go to working homes, obedience, agility, police force and my personal favourite was when one of my 2 year old males was placed in a home to be the companion for an interlectually handicapped child for her protection, and was very sucessful. What titles have you or your puppy buyers put on dogs you have bred? 2 Australian Grand Champions, 24 Australian Champions, American Champions, Australian Obedience & Agility, American Obedience, Agility & Tracking titles. What made your decision to start breeding? To improve my kennels. What caused you to pick the particular dog/bloodline(s) that you did to start your breeding program? We bought a bitch from "Walgee Knls" and at that time not knowing a great deal about the breed. Fortunately the breeders ( Peter & Gail Ferguson ) were a very helpful and gave us lots of info. We

would sit for hours at a time with pedigrees, photos etc. We decided to line breed when the time was right. Our selection of the male ended up being quite easy. We used Aust. Ch.Binshaw Blue Bounce, he was line bred to our Walgee Blue Dinky Di. What dog/bitch to date is your best dog/bitch produced and why? Grand Ch: Strathblue Tyrone - Type, Temperament and Soundness. When deciding on a breeding do you outcross, linebreed, inbreed or a combination of all? At the moment I line breed, there will come a day when I will have to go to an outcross. Do you breed to outside females and if so what is your criteria? Not often. But firstly I take a good look at the bitch, then I study pedigrees. If I like it then I ask about the health issues. I only have 2 "B" males in my kennels at the moment so I require the bitch to be no less than a "B". Who influenced your breeding choices the most & why? Firstly it was Peter & Gail - Walgee Kennels and secondly, and where I learnt the most was Ken & Helen Dickson - Tallawong Kennels. These two kennels were the most influential in Victoria at the time and their knowledge of the breed was extensive. What dog has made the biggest impact on your breeding program to date? Grand Champion Strathblue Tyrone What bitch has made the biggest impact on your breeding program to date? Champion Strathblue Jillaroo - foundation bitch, without her I would have nothing.

Which dog and bitch in your breeding program was most successful or that you feel contributed the most to the breed. Why? Grand Champion Strathblue Aussie Lord. "Aussie" has been our biggest winner in the kennels. He is a correct size, great head and moves like the wind. He is now over 10 years old but still can make his mark in the ring. His last show was in March 2010 ( ACD Club C.S.) Dog Challenge, Runner up in Show

and best Veteran in Show. He still has that "look at me" presence. How do you raise your puppies? All our pups are raised on a raw meat diet. What do you feed your dogs, puppies, etc? Fresh lamb, good quality beef mince, chicken mince and carcasses. A premium quality dry food. How did you come up with your kennel name? STRATH - comes from the area will lived in when we first registered.

(Strathbfieldsaye BLUE - at the time we were only interested in the 'blues' Do you believe you have a distinguishable line? Yes If you were going to rate type, temperament and soundness in order of importance, what would be the order and why? As a working dog they have to be SOUND. then Temperament and then type. When judging them it is a little different. :o) What do you think are the most serious faults in the breed today? Here in Australia, Toplines, Ears, temperament ( oo soft ). What would you say are the biggest problems facing the breed today? Here in Australia, too many breeders breeding for the 'show dog' and not or the purpose. Breeders burying their heads in the sand when it comes to the health issues, $$ 's are coming first. Do you consider yourself a mentor to others just coming into the breed? Yes, I try to help anyone out who wants to listen. What advice would you give them in starting out on the right road? They must do their homework. Knowledge is the best thing around. Describe an average day living with your dogs:

Up early. Dogs into their running yards. Clean kennels. Breakfast. Midday back to the kennels. Check each dog/bitch's ears, mouth, feet. Between noon and 4pm is my time. Feed at 4pm and then back out to running yards. An hour before bed they go to yhe 3 acres for fun time, a good run and stretch out, in Summer into the dam. During show times they have their training times in the mornings. What should people who are interested in this breed know before they bring one of these dogs into their homes? They are a WORKING dog. Be prepared for lots of activity. Read, talk to breeders as much as they can. They are not 'couch potato's, they're on the go all the time. Is there anything interesting that the breeding community (for your breed) is collectively working on? Not at this stage. Do you feel the current standard is adequate? Yes. It has just been reviewed and rewritten so Breeders and Trainee judges have a better understanding of it. THANK YOU!!!

Fun at Obedience Trials by Mary Belle adelman The reasons people like dogs would take many books and way too much time, so I’ll just dwell on a few of the reasons I enjoy mine. I found out years ago that dogs just like to be with you. They love to play and romp, but are also content to just hang out with you while you do things you have to do. Dogs are just plain good company. You can talk to them and they listen. Then never criticize, and they are always on your side, even when you are wrong, they just hang out until you have figured it out for yourself. Dogs are probably the best medicine for almost anything that ails you that doesn’t require surgery. Since dogs enjoy playing and working with you, the games the two of you can invent are limitless. I was about five when I played dolls with my little terrier, training him to ride peacefully in a doll carriage. He gave me companionship, love, and never criticized me—at least not where I could hear it. As I grew up, my games became more complex. I trained another terrier to do all manner of tricks and, along with my trick horse, we gave loads of pleasure to those who came to watch us work and perform. I discovered that the animals loved the attention almost as much as I did, but they always came to me for their ultimate satisfaction. All of my animals loved me completely and unquestioningly, a marvelous gift never to be taken lightly. Around 1972, I discovered the world of AKC obedience competition and a whole new game was available. Now I could train all over the place with many other people and dogs and then I could pack up and go to dog shows that lasted two or more days at a time. This was my idea of the perfect world. Since next to training and showing off, my best times were when I could get away and have the dogs all to myself for a few days without the interference of daily life.

Training for showing presented many problems in the beginning as the popular trainers were entirely too force and domination oriented for my taste. I love my animals and have always been able to communicate my desires to them without causing them to be upset or in pain (or even discomfort). This was the beginning of my love of research into animal communication and the development of the OPTã (Optimum Placement Technique) obedience training method. Working toward all of the possible performance titles gave me a goal that let me check new techniques as I developed them. That was the actual side effect because the real goal was always to train the dogs, take them to dog shows, show them, play with them, them come home and live with dogs that were very tuned in to me and keen to work with me in whatever venture I was currently engaged at the time. Most people won’t go this route, but they can relate to having neat ways to get the dog to do whatever they are interested in at the time. I just love the carnival atmosphere of dog shows, the camping out experience without having to brave too many wildernesses, and the fun of having special time to devote to the dogs completely away for the regular demands of everyday living. At home many of the obedience exercises come in handy and gets us loads of positive attention, which both the dogs and I thoroughly enjoy. So, no matter what my goals may become, the ultimate reward will be in having a dog work with me in whatever adventure I am working on at the time. My dogs will always bring me great pleasure and joy, life long love, and truly great memories. Buruki and Mary at 2006 National

Herding With My Dogs My favorite activity to do with my Cattle Dogs is most definitely herding. Whether training for farm work or trialing, it is amazing to watch how these dogs can help you get the job done. I got my first ACD with the intention of learning to herd and eventually trial. I remember well the very first time we exposed Roanie to sheep in a round pen, I was hooked and so was she! I was attending a herding clinic as an auditor, meaning I was there to watch and learn, but not actually work a dog in the clinic. During the lunch break, they were doing instinct testing for anyone who wanted to see if their dog had the instinct and desire to work. This may seem trivial to people already immersed in the herding world, but for newbie’s first coming into the idea of herding and not having a clue about what to do or where to go for help, it is a great introduction. I now encourage others to give their dogs a chance and see what happens. So, now I knew my dog had tons of instinct and desire, but I needed to learn so much to harness that energy and talent. One of the great things about herding is that there are clinics and “camps across the country where you can go and train with

your dog on many types of stock. Larry Painter holds Cow Camps at his farm in Missouri and trains you and your dog to work cattle as well as sheep. That was the first camp I attended and what a blast! You camp out in their home, slumber party style, and work dogs all day, for an entire week, or occasionally a 3 day weekend. We all chip in and make meals, plus do the clean up, and fight for the shower at some point each day. Larry and Marilyn are wonderful and it is like a big, crazy family when you are there. Larry’s cows are nice to work and that is where I got my first exposure to working cattle with my dogs. Another of my favorite camps is Jerry Rowe’s Sheep Herding Camp. Jerry and Sharon have set up a beautiful facility in Kansas and they have small groups come and work for a full week as well. After breakfast each morning, we all attend class consisting of lecture and discussion, and then we get down to work herding sheep. The atmosphere is so relaxing and set up in a manner to allow you and your dogs to learn and progress. The campers chip in and fix dinner several nights during the week, otherwise Sharon cooks and spoils us all. Besides being good for learning, the camps are so much fun because you are there with people who share your interest in herding and you can learn so much watching them work their dogs and listen to the coaching they are given. Camp is not just about working your dog and

then waiting until you get to work again that afternoon, they are great learning experiences that give you a chance to see dogs working at higher and lower levels than where you are at currently, plus seeing people and dogs working through their trouble spots. All of this helps both you and your dog.

Even though these are Cattle Dogs, and you may think working sheep isn’t right, it’s really just another avenue to help train you and your dogs, plus, unfortunately, sheep are more available for trialing. And that brings me to another type of stock that I enjoy training and trialing on, ducks! It is so neat to watch my dog work ducks with such ease and finesse, after having watched her bite cows and make them move!

Joyce Norris holds some great duck clinics and teaches you that working ducks helps not only the dog, but the handler as well. My timing, and the dogs, must be impeccable because one step too much and the ducks miss the obstacle or reverse direction, but you don’t want to over command and make your dog robotic. Joyce helps us find that delicate balance. They are definitely not easy to work, but they are a fun challenge and what you learn on the ducks does translate to other types of stock. One of the greatest things about the ducks is that it slows everything down for you to see where you and the dog are messing up. They give you time to think instead of playing catch up and getting frustrated. Plus, many people that can’t have larger types of livestock can keep ducks at their homes and can still be able to practice in between getting to sheep or cattle. Ducks are also easily portable so that you can take them different places and work your dogs in different fields with different draws, teaching you both more about handling stock.

I look forward to working my dogs regularly on many types of stock and trialing throughout the year. It is such a thrill for me to watch my dogs work. Even though it may not be as realistic as working the large herds of cattle for which our dogs were originally intended, herding trials allow us to have a goal to train toward and have fun with our dogs in the process. The people at the herding trials are wonderful and I can’t think of a better way to spend time with my dogs than training or trialing on stock. “Mo” has been busy doing lots of stuff… & doing it WELL! He finished his Grand Championship, earned a Group 1, a Group 4, and his first CD leg in the same weekend. On Saturday when he was waiting to go into group he placed second and got his first CD leg before winning group. On Sunday he finished his Grand Championship then went on to a group placement. A weekend like that is once in a lifetime. But Mo wasn’t finished with October. He earned his first Herding Started A sheep leg a mere 2 weeks later. He is certainly a dog that can do it all… and at the same time! A big Thank You to Sherri Hurst who handles Mo in conformation. She is truly awesome with him!

The Australian Cattle Dog Pedigree Finder has grown and morphed dramatically over the past two decades. My own personal pedigree database started out in old Macintosh HyperCard Stacks in the late 80’s and then was transferred to MacPetigree software in the early 90’s. While I maintained a database in one form or another on my computer for my personal use and research, I wanted to find a way to share the resource on the rapidly growing world wide web. The first online resource was a very simple CGI script that allowed users to find the sire and dam of any dog in the database along with any health testing information I had available for those three dogs. Using those early databases it would take me literally an entire day of exporting, sorting and configuring to get the data into a searchable format. In the late 90’s, after connecting with like-minded pedigree geeks in other breeds, I was virtually introduced to Jim Trethewey at Pedigree Central (Alfirin Technologies). Jim is a Belgian Sheepdog enthusiast who was more than willing to share the pedigree web interface he created along with his knowledge (and patience in dealing with coding newbies) with others who were eager to share pedigree data with the world. At the same time, I converted my entire pedigree database using Breedmate software. Initially, configuring the Breedmate files for use with the web interface was just as time-consuming as with my previous lookup script but the results were better formatted, it included information for more than just one generation and included the possibility of displaying photos along with search results. Somewhere along the way, the means to export breedmate data directly into a format used by the pedigree central scripts was incorporated into the breedmate software and since then the whole export process has been much simpler. With over 58,000 dogs currently in the database,

the searchable files are still about 10 megabytes in size so updating the information available online is only feasible on a bimonthly or quarterly basis. In 2007 a server change snafu made me keenly aware that I was not the only one regularly using the online pedigree database. Never being one to check web traffic or monitor who all is visiting the websites that I maintain, I was gobsmacked by the flood of emails from individuals that wanted information or who needed a pedigree generated for one reason or another. It was at that point that I decided that the Pedigree Finder needed its own domain and that all the scripts and data files needed a place of their own. The domain ACDpedigree.com was registered and remains the home of the Pedigree Finder to this day. Commercially available compiled media sources such as the AKC Studbook, “The First Five Years” (Harling), “A Dog Called Blue” (Clark), “The ACD Sourcebook” series (Toft), the “Australian Cattle Dog Champions” series (Camino books) and the “Australian Cattle Dog Photo Album” (Casey) have all been wonderful resources for information about the many of the ACDs in the database. Articles and advertisements in breed magazines are another source of pedigree data along with personal websites. The OFA website (offa.org) and the Veterinary Medical Database (vmdb.org) are incredible resources when looking at and compiling heath testing information. The primary source of data that has been integrated into the ACD Pedigree Finder over the years, however, comes from submissions by cowdog owners worldwide. I personally use the ACD Pedigree online search frequently and the breedmate database on my hard drive when I am not connected to the internet. Both interfaces can generate pedigree information in different formats and rarely a day goes by that I don’t access one or the other. I am pleased that the database was used for research purposes by those developing the prcd test for our breed and am thrilled that the data I have compiled over the years will be used by those starting to explore the heritability of deafness in our breed. The ACD Pedigree Finder is a passion, an obsession, a diversion and will hopefully be a continued resource for years and years to come. By Katherine Beutow Branson

"After all he is only a Cattle Dog..." When the Australian Cattle Dog came to Europe, to the States, even in the most remote areas of this world, he met white, red, yellow, brown and black people with qualities as different as their skin colours. He was always the same: devotedly faithful and outstanding intelligent, to name only two of his impressive features. Many loved him on the spot and still do. Some disliked him. They did not think that he was as attractive like f.ex. An Afghan, he just did not suit their expensive way of life. After all he was only a Cattle Dog.

A Cattle Dog is faithful, ready never to forsake his owner. This characteristic people estimate on him very much. Nevertheless they do not follow this example. Why should they? To be faithful is not really in human nature. After all they are not a Cattle Dog.

There he is standing in the fenced yard. Sometimes children are passing, who would love to play with him. But a big sign post says, "I am dangerous"! It is boring and hours are passing by so slowly. All spots in the yard have been marked hundred times. Sometimes he tries to communicate with other dogs on a leach, but for their owners it was only disturbing barking. In summertime he is hunting butterflies sometimes. Half-hearted he is chewing a toy, which the producer claims to be "dogbiteresistant". Finally his friend and owner returns home. Now it starts to be joyful. We will enjoy together our freedom in chasing, running, jumping; playing with a ball, diving and swimming in the nearby lake. But walking to the freezer with the cool beer attracts the friend magically. And then the sofa and the TV - a highlight of the day! How enjoyable to knock off work! Why should he run outside until he will be exhausted and sweatening? After all he is only a Cattle Dog.

Today was an exciting day - a small child was missing. Probably it was only lost, could not find home. The little sweater smelled for porridge, a bit of sand trickled out of it and it tasted salty from tears. The Cattle Dog is running without a rest, sniffing here and there, was listening to every noise. He did not allow himself to be irritated by the tempting smell of bitches in season or the fascinating markings

of taller and smaller buddies. He took his challenge seriously and did not fail in his task, just as it was his talent. But what was this? His owner took him and fenced him to the car. His friend's duty was over. Going on working without salary? Unthinkable! After all he is only a Cattle Dog!

Again a tedious day came to its end. Promised time of cuddling with his friend was waiting! Happy anticipation was spreading. Then he would lick all over his face, roll his back on the floor and enjoy to be cuddled. Perhaps he could try once more to touch out to him with his paw. A gesture which his owner called milk kneading and did not like too much as claws were scratching. He woke up from his day dream, when the door bell was ringing. His friend's girl friend came in. They did not want to be disturbed and locked the kennel door behind him. Why should he wave away this delight? Why should he keep his word? After all he was only a Cattle Dog.

Registration Options & Advocacy: The Path to 100% By now, we hope that you have seen AKC’s recent messages regarding the importance of registration. If you have not, here they are in a nutshell: Every registration makes a difference to everyone involved in the world of purebred dogs. Registrations help AKC maintain a strong legislative influence, fund canine health research, provide for disaster preparedness and relief, and promote responsible dog ownership. The best way to ensure that our traditions remain strong is for breeders like you to ensure that every puppy you produce is AKC registered.

originally selected traditional litter registration. The newly-introduced Full Litter PLUS registration allows breeders to register all puppies from a litter at the time of litter registration, each either in the name of the breeder or of the new puppy buyers. Lastly, the Full Litter Offspring PLUS form allows breeders to register all the puppies in a litter after it’s been registered, each either in the name of the breeder or of the new puppy buyers. For either of the last two options, if a puppy is not named at time of registration, AKC will later contact the new puppy buyers to get the name of their puppy. Question: What are my "Favorite Things" that I love to do best with my cattle dogs?? Answer: Everything....because that is why I have ACDs....they can do ANYTHING!! From "bed warmer" to Search & Rescue dog, ACDs can do it all...and do it well! Besides breeding and raising well socialized puppies, I like giving every thing a go. In recent years, I have cut way back on showing in conformation so that I could have more time to try new things out.....agility, tracking, rally, herding, weight pulling, SAR, scent discrimination, lure coursing, as well as obedience. Agility is by far the most fun for both me and my dogs. And agility has taught me to be a better dog handler/trainer and to train using positive motivation. Positive training methods make even obedience fun! Agility really brings you and your dog closer together. I absolutely love the way that puppies turn on and want to listen to you and do the right thing because the "reward" of doing agility is so great. I think it is the best and most fun way to train puppies. They have fun and build confidence with the initial training work. They learn to sit and stay because they know it means they will get rewarded by getting to zoom thru the tunnel or play on the wobble board! Besides training your dog and building a stronger bond between you, it is also good exercise for both you and your dog. And it also provides good mental stimulation for you both. The fact that it is so much fun, is the icing on the cake for me!

And if you are the competitive type like me, there are so many different agility organizations out there that you can find competitions to suit everyone and every dog. Many organizations allow you to enter in "Preferred or Veteran" so that you can jump your dog at lower heights, too. It really is a sport that allows almost any dog and any person to have a fun time. Agility teaches your dog to work with you and focus on you and your body language. I really think it makes for a better companion dog and also one that is easier to train for other venues, too. This past year I have competed and titled in three different venues.....AKC, UKC, and CPE. I am also looking into ASCA, NADAC, USDAA and UKI agility, too. But we have had a full schedule with all the other canine sports that we train and compete in. Our newest and latest endeavor is Weight Pulling. We are currently competing in the UKC WP trials and have 2 of the required 3 legs for Bundi's WP title. I am proud that we are pulling in the harness of one of the first two ACDs to earn a WP title.....the infamous Poe. Now that Poe is no longer with us, the honor of pulling in his memory gives us extra incentive to succeed. To start teaching your dog to pull you need a proper pulling harness. Get your dog used to wearing the harness and then you can start him dragging a plastic milk jug filed with a few stones. This will get him used to the noise and dragging a little weight. To increase weight, you can add water. A gallon of water weighs 8 lbs. Then you can go to dragging an old tire. It is essential that you keep it fun for your dog and not try to pull too much, too quickly. Weight pulling is an extremely good way to build up your dog's

muscles, too. In the past, it was used by fighting dog trainers to make their fighters stronger and hardier. These days it has involved into a fun sport. It takes awhile for most dogs to get the hang of competitive pulling, but once they do it is amazing how they will tackle breaking weight on a sled carrying several hundred pounds on it. Right now, Bundi enjoys pulling our practice sled around. I can swap out the weight on it and he can pull 10 lbs for long distance when we go for a walk, or we can 20 lbs for normal practice. This is all he really needs to pull to learn how and to prepare for basic competition. To earn a WP title in UKC, a dog has to pull ten times his body weight. With the cart on tracks, this is easily done. A dog only need to know how to break and the cart easily rolls behind him. Some dogs need to get used to this set up, but Bundi managed to pull his 600 lbs his first time out. Soon he will go for his third and final leg! We will be doing the weight pull in the morning and then driving an hour north to compete the same afternoon in an agility trial! Are we crazy??? Maybe! But are we having fun? DEFINITELY! By Suzie Ironmonger

CPE (Canine Performance Events) is a more relaxed and fun agility venue and great for beginners! Bundi and I started competing when he was two years old and we both LOVE it.....can't you tell from the big grin on his face?!

Suzie Ironmonger and Bundi

Agility is a great way to teach even the most active dog "focus".

Here is an attentive and focused Bundi on the table. And see the wagging tail...he is enjoying every second of it!

Zipping thru tunnels is a favorite for ACDs! This is at ACDCA2009.

And yes, even overweight, older broads like me can have fun and compete in agility....especially with an ACD! See how Bundi keeps his head cocked in my direction even as he soars over this jump....he always knows where I am and "reads" my body to know what the course plan is.

Bundi enjoys agility so much he just flies thru the air.... (yes, he did clear the jump) Agility helps me keep my dog's body and mind fit, builds strong teamwork skills between the two of us, and gives my dog an enthusiasm for life that carries over into the other aspects of our work and play together....show, rally, obedience, tracking, hanging out and cuddling!

Weight Pulling

Bundi (U-CH, URO1, UAGI Wallaby Smokin' Bundaberg Blu HIC, CGC, NA, RA, CL1R) pulling 720 lbs at his first Weight Pull. Bundi was honored to pull in the harness of "The Mighty Poe". We were proud to pull and qualify in Poe's memory.

Getting ready to pull our first ever time on the track. Here you can see Bundi in harness which was attached to the cart. The platform/track is covered in carpet to give the dogs purchase to pull. The cart has weigh has 240 lbs of rail line on it for a total weight of 600 lbs. Please note that Poe's harness is a bit large for Bundi and hangs lower then it should. There is always someone at the rear of the cart to keep it from rolling over the dog should he suddenly stop. Note: no food or toys are allowed, you cannot touch your dog nor can he touch you. No cursing or yelling, either! But otherwise you can do just about anything to encourage your pup to "pull"!

Hardtack Gettin’ Down and Dirty “Dixie”

So you have a cattle dog, and are looking for something fun for the two of you to do together. You take a quick look out in the back yard and realize there’s not enough room for sheep, let alone cattle…..at least for the majority of us. There’s always that dog show thing, but danged…..you have to get dressed up for that. Now I do both of those things as a hobby, and their fun to participate in. Of course there’s agility, obedience, and rally but if your cow dog has an affinity towards water like most of them do, then maybe you should consider going out of the box just a little and try Dock Dogs. Yes, I said Dock Dogs, the sport where most of the competition is chocolate, yellow, or black, and have floppy ears……but you get to wear flip flops. Last year I found a local Dock Dog club here in Kansas City, paid my membership dues and went to work figuring out how to get my dogs off the end of the dock. I soon learned that just getting them to jump a couple of feet and bring the toy back was an accomplishment in its self. Now my dogs love the water, but their first goal was not to see how far they could jump, but more to

see how much of a splash they could make. With a little coaching from some of our local Dock Dog stars we soon fell into a routine of long jumps that impressed even those ole black dog owners. There are basically three events in Dock Dogs. 

“Big Air”, which is where the dog chases and jumps in the water after a toy that you throw off the end of the dock. Distance is the name of the game here. “Extreme Vertical” is all about height. Jumping for a toy that is suspended 6 to 10 feet over the water requires a lot of focus, drive and athleticism on the part of the dog. Belgian Malinois seem to dominate this event. “Speed Retrieve” is the drag race of Dock Dogs. The dog leaves from a designated place on the dock, jumps in and swims the distance of the pool after a toy suspended about a foot over the water at the end of the pool. In most cases that’s over 40 feet, and I can tell you from experience it’s not always easy to get your dog to lock in on a toy 40 feet away when there are lots of people screaming and yelling, and other dogs running around. You can compete in any or all of the events. There is an event called “Iron Dog” where the competitors consistently compete in all three events, kind of like a Triathlon.

Ok, so I practiced all year with two of my cattle dogs, Stash, and Dixie. Things were going great, we would practice at the clubs dirty muddy pond and the dogs were jumping great. Stash, my big guy had worked his way up to a consistent 20 foot jump, and Dixie who’s a bit smaller was jumping 14 to 15 feet.

I was very happy with the both of them, and even had visions of Stash breaking some sort of record for cattle dogs. (Yes, Dad dreams big) Remember I said we practiced in “muddy” water; well competition is in “clean water”. People had told me that some dogs didn’t make the transition from dirty to clean water very easily. Of course I thought to myself, hey, my dogs love the water…..what difference could clean or Stash dirty water possibly make? Fast forward to our first official competition, a nice 40 foot dock leading to 40 foot long, 20 foot wide pool of crystal clear water fresh from the city fire hydrant. We wait our turn then eagerly take our place on the dock. The spectators being impressed with the fact that there is a cattle dog on the dock only heightened my expectations. Stash is happy, and jumping around for the toy……obviously he hadn’t taken a good look at the water on the other end. I place him in a down stay at the 40 foot mark, and got to my position at the water end of the dock……I call my dog, waited until the right moment to throw his favorite water toy…..he’s running fast, this is going to be a fantastic jump, then all of a sudden he throws the

breaks on and comes to an abrupt stop just inches from the water. He finally realized that was not the kind of water he was used too! We both left the dock with our tails between our legs. After about 6 tries that weekend we finally got him to jump a solid 8 feet…..drat’s, no world’s record. But wait I still have another dog, Dixie to the rescue? Oh yes, my red girl Dixie managed to make up for everything by out jumping herself, and going 16 feet three times in a row. The crowd roared, Dixie jumped, and I managed feel a bit of dignity return. The bottom line is that Dock Dogs is a fun, low impact sport on the dog and handler. We’ll get Stash used to that evil clean water, and see about stretching Dixie to 18 feet! For anyone wanting to have a lot of fun and meet a lot of great people, I would certainly grab your dog and his or her favorite floating toy and go find a dock. Kane’s Favorite Toys

Kane with his little zoo of squeaky toys. Photo by Gitte Johannessen

Kane has a lot of favorite things to do, from herding

cows and doing searchwork and tracking in the forest to sleeping in my bed. But his favorite things... are undisputedly his own, little zoo. He has zebras, giraffes, lions and elephants, but they live in the strangest places: They are to be found in the chest of drawers in the hallway, in the jacket pocket of his owner, in the box with all his training gear in the car, or running off with other people out in the forest! He knows they are there, but they are very easily lost! These squeaky toys - for that's what they are - are his absolute favorites as rewards. Oh yes, there will be tennis balls, tug of war rags, the "arms" used for protection work, and he loves going for them since he has a tremendous play and hunt drive. But a little squeak, and everything else is forgotten. They are his rewards when he trains search and rescue for working dog competition, where he runs and runs to search for the lost people with his lost squeaky toys, taking him to the elite class. They are his rewards doing obedience, where we are one step below. They have been our help in training him to have a great recall. So I keep supplying him with his zoo animals, which his friend and boss, the little Lancashire heeler, invariably will get hold of at one time or other - and finish off. He has extremely clear preferences: We have tried out

different animals, I thought it would be fun to have squeaky sheep (I didn't find cows), but they aren't as fun to chew on. He prefers the ones which still makes sound to the silenced ones, and lions over zebras... The people I train with, used to laugh at our little zoo - but not anymore. And he has perfect control over them; if he gets two, he will grab them both. If we lose it, he will find it - no matter how long it takes, even when he searches like a dervish. I have actually thought of writing the manufacturer and asking if they want to sponsor a dark grey, very dedicated zoo keeper.... (Kane - is the call name of JWW-08 Norw Ch Whoelse's BBenjiman, Junior Herding Dog (AHBA), Swedish HIT tested and approved, living in Oslo, Norway, with owner Gitte Johannessen)

Geocaching with my Cattle Dogs My cattledog friend, Anne Smith, told me about Geocaching. What is it, you may ask. Simply, it is a treasure hunt, and your task is to find a cache that people hide all over the world, even in Iraq! All you need is a handheld GPS and some trinkets to trade if you so choose. Here is the website: http://www.geocaching.com/ Go to the site and input your zip code. You will be amazed to find all the caches that people hid around you.

Paige, watching out for muggles.

I started this as an incentive to take my son out to trails with our dogs. For me it is plain fun to go out with the dogs, but for a teen, you need more incentive to go out in the freezing or hot weather. It is that thrill of looking for something and sometimes the reward is big! You may find an ammo can full of trinkets, geocoins, and travelbugs. If you want one of them, you take one and put one that you brought with you. The trinket is yours to keep, but you will have to log in geocoins and travelbugs on the website so that the owners of these traveling devices will know where they are. You can see where the geocoin and travelbug have been traveling by logging into their page.

A handmade cache hidden Travel Bug (TB) with my Tasmanian Devil

One of my travelbugs, named “Save the Tasmanian Devil (http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx? id=790081) has traveled 13,000 miles and now in Florida. It started from my cache named Rocky Mountain High (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx? guid=1676a95e-02b2-41b2-bdfb-66aaa6dac0a1) in Westchester County, NY. It travelled to Massachusetts, then flew to Oakland, CA. Then it was picked up by someone who brought it up to Washington State and then to Hawaii! It was to relax there for a while enjoying the sun before travelling on to Australia. But it was brought back to Kansas. Maybe by a tornado! So this is what you would do. 1. Set up your account at http://www.geocaching.com 2. Assign yourself a team name 3. Get a portable GPS or download Geocaching apps for your iPhone or Android (see above website for details) 4. Put your zip code etc to see if there are any caches nearby you to start with 5. When you find a cache to look for, put the coordinates into your GPS and relating info (cache name, hint etc) 6. Find some trinkets (no food items, no offensive items) to trade 7. Grab your dog(s) and get set to go! Paige enjoying her win!

You should start with caches with easy ratings to get yourself motivated. It is quite disappointing when you cannot find a cache. But it does happen. Anne advised me to stop using the GPS when you are about 25 feet from the cache, and to start to look around for the “obvious”. You will get this sense of “obvious” after several caches. If you are lucky to find one, make sure there is nobody around you (in Geocaching, innocent bystanders are called “muggles”). Act quickly if it is in the populous area. Unfortunately many caches are damaged or lost . Even if you did not find one, at least you and your dogs had a wonderful adventure! When Geocache met tracking cattle dogs…. When you add geocaching, tracking enthusiast, and tracking dogs together, geocaching becomes more than exercise. Anne Smith and her tracking cattledogs, Anzac and Diggy, both working toward their VST title go geocaching every week. She began geocaching in 2004 and tracking in 2003. She transfered Anzac's ability to find a tracking article to something else, such as an ammo can or a rubbermaid container. She began by hiding an ammo can at home but it was just too easy for Anzac. Then Anzac taught Diggy. Fortunately the majority of caches are in stone walls, hollow tree limbs and such - right at their level. When Anne gets out the GPSs, maps, water bottle and treats, they immediately know they are going geocaching. When they get within about a hundred feet, Anne says "find the cache" and they start using their noses. Anne thinks basically what they do is sort out the scent of a manmade object from the natural environment. But they may also be distinguishing metal or plastic, as they do have metal and plastic articles in urban tracking. When they find a cache they have been taught to sit as an "alert" or "article indication", and of course they get tons of praise and treats, especially if they find it before Anne’s team does! Geocache is also the great way to go to places that are not on any guidebooks when you travel. After we visited Muirwood in CA, we ended up at a trailhead of Mt. Tam. Despite the warning signs, we came back safely!

Anzac and Diggy trying to beat the human team

Drove all the way to Index, WA, and found 2 out of 3. We could not find the one that was supposed to be around here. At least we had beautiful views. In the middle of Vail Village, Colorado. In an urban sessting, nothing is more thrilling to retrieve a cache unnoticed. If it is too crowded and people are watching, we have to give it up in order to keep the cache safe.

Even in your own neighborhood, you will have a bit of a scary feeling when you go into woods because you do not know where you are going! Will we get lost? Will we be back before it gets dark? Then you realize that you are with your most trusted partners. So go out there and enjoy the fresh air, beautiful sights, and your dogs! (Eriko Yatabe-Waldock with huge thanks to Anne Smith.)

Blue My favorite thing to do with him is play frisbee. It would be doing actual herding training with him...but the nearest facility is geographically undesirable. His favorite thing, as seen in his smile, is to keep watch over 'his' interurban trail that runs in front of our yard, across the street. Anything that moves, from Squirrels, Joggers, Bicyclists, you name it. If it can move or make sounds he knows about it and has to let them know he's there as well. No matter how many times I sarcastically have to remind him that it's ok and others really aren't impressed by his actions he just doesn't seem to believe me. Our sight/scent hound and his older princess of a sister, Gabi, a Basenji Mix doesn't help matters either. She was actually brought back from Africa when my wife returned from the Peace Corps. They are quite the pair. Ryan Ottaway Martin

Our favorite activity to do with our ACD's is bikejoring. You hook the dogs up to your bike and let them pull. Great for ACD's that live in the city with a small yard. It's a job for them to do. We bikejor from about October-April here in SC. Water-fetching is our summer time activity. When ACD Spotlight asked me, what’s my favorite thing to do with my dog, my first thought was, how will I choose just one? You see my dog Talon and I consider our selves experts in how to not sit still. I really enjoy getting out there and trying new and different things, and Talon is always more than happy to accompany me on our next adventure. I love my dog; I love doing everything with him. How will I choose just one? First, a bit about my dog Talon, the most important thing to know about Talon is that he may be the world’s happiest dog. No matter what we’re doing, no matter what’s going on around him, he is excited to be a part of it. You know that smile your dog gives you when he’s proud of something he’s done or when she knows you’re about to do something she loves, like a walk? Talon seems to live with that smile twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Talon’s constant joy absorbs you and distracts you from everyday worries. You can’t help but smile when you see his unwavering blissfulness. Whether you’re throwing a ball or just enjoying a car ride together, Talon is happy to be there, witness and partner in life. For me, I enjoy the challenge and excitement of trying new things. Talon opens numerous doors for us to explore in the world of dog sport and activities. We’ve either trained or been able to sample: schutzhund, herding, obedience, agility, tracking, lure coursing, nose work and rally obedience. That doesn’t begin to cover the trick train-

ing, toys, hiking, and car rides we enjoy more regularly. If it’s new, I’m game to try it and with a dog like Talon, we take on anything that comes our way. How to choose a favorite? Non-dog people would never get this, which is probably why most of our non-dog friends slowly disappear and we attract more dog lovers into our lives. I get the most enjoyment when I can see that my dog is having fun. I love being able to enrich his life, his day. How do I know Talon is having fun? Only a dog person would know. There’s that smile, he walks a little taller on his paws. He bears his weight more forward, towards his interest. Even when he’s relaxed, waiting his turn at herding, for example, he has seriousness, an intensity trying to absorb every movement and sound. As he begins to realize he’s going to get to play Talon’s tail goes up and rhythmically waves back and forth, an outward expression of his elation. Even quiet work like tracking or nose work has a passion to it. How will I choose a favorite? Down time with Talon has it’s own surprises. One of the most treasured times for me is very first thing in the morning. Right about the time I should be considering getting up, Talon will very gently pop up on to the bed and tenderly maneuvers his muzzle into the crook of my neck. He’s stretching himself, as he softly lies lengthwise beside me, just like a person. When I’m

ready to join the day I say, “Good morning” and he joins me with a stretch and a groan of his own. I’m expected to acknowledge him with a good, loving pet and then, the games are on. Apparently, I’ve been trained that immediately following the morning pet is ball play. Talon leaps off the bed with a level of enthusiasm way too high for pre-coffee. Only moments later, he comes bounding back. He jumps high for maximum effect and aims his four paws for the soft spots of Schutzhund training the lying victim. I think he measures his success by the amount of air forced out of me by his landing. As mildly torturous as this may seem, I treasure this ritual, an honest contender for my favorite thing. It’s clear that I value my life with my dog. What’s not yet clear is which of these is my favorite thing to do with my dog. Is the next new thing our passion? Perhaps flyball, treibball or carting will be our next new challenges. Does the visible exhilaration Talon shows for herding and schutzhund that make those my favorite thing to do with my dog? What about the quiet, precious cuddling that can warm the coldest soul? I love all of these things. Each of these brings me an inner joy, a unique happiness.

Lure coursing. The only conclusion to draw is I enjoy every moment with my dog. My favorite thing to do with my dog is to spend time with him. My mission, my goal everyday is to figure out a way to enjoy more time with my dog. If I have to travel the questions become, would Talon enjoy coming with me? Can Talon come with me? If I have a long day, what can I do with Talon in the morning, before the chaos kicks in? I’m not the greatest trick trainer, and my yard is not the best for ball play; these are small ways I can add value to the moments. Everything we do is an effort to have more time to live with and love the best dog in the world.
