Sumitomo Mitsui Construction – the completed Project SMAGIV: SMPIII Provided by Sng Jinhui
M&E Trainee Supports Structural Works AcePLP Trainee Sng Jinhui shares his fulfilling C&S experience at Sumitomo
When Jinhui was first assigned to assist client Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co. (SMCC) Ltd., he knew it was going to be challenging. With his Mechanical Engineering background, tackling AutoCAD Architecture 2011 to support the structural works of a 5,000 m² chemical plant would be no walk in the park. He joined Project SMAGIV: SMPIII (see next page for description) just as the foundations were being laid out. Interestingly, it was being planned and constructed concurrently. “Once each drawing is approved, the construction begins immediately,” said Jinhui. This meant that drawing schedules had to be very tight in order to keep up with the rapidly underway construction work. PROJECT SNAPSHOTS In spite of the fast pace of work, Jinhui evidently took pride and satisfaction in the effort invested, and was very happy to share with us some project snapshots:
,maintenance stages, as well as frames for equipments to rest on. His involvement however, went beyond just that. CONTRIBUTIONS BEYOND DRAFTING ROLE Jinhui had to propose suitable sizes and specifications of the steel structures based on site conditions, as well as the limitations of equipment resting on them. He also added value to his clients by helping to generate design ideas in the steel structures visualization. Luckily for him, ideas were generally welcomed. “If there are no major problems, usually the ideas will be approved,” he said. Unexpected modifications to steel structures had to be done urgently at times. For instance, if a pipe could not be rerouted,
(AFTER) I was personally involved in designing the steel frames for the pumps to rest on!
PRIMARY ROLE IN THE PROJECT Jinhui’s primary role was to come up with detailed drawings for engineers’ reference, which were used also for fabrication purposes. Typical assignments include drafting of staircases
when found to clash with the main steel members during the constructing phase, Jinhui and his project team had to think on their feet, and propose plausible solutions to the Professional Engineer (PE) quickly. The PE would check that the solutions maintained the structural integrity of the framework.

TYPES OF CROSS-DISCIPLINARY CHALLENGES TO EXPECT “Trying to understand the demands of the engineers, who require drafters to visualise design ideas in order to do the drawings, is the first hurdle to overcome,” said Jinhui. Coming from a different background means that more time is needed to understand their work. The steel structures connection details were hard to understand so he had to go around consulting the Engineering Manager and Site engineers. “Observing old plants 1 & 2 helped a lot in learning too.”

FINAL THOUGHTS “It feels good to see your drawings actually built up nicely,” he said. Having had the opportunity to participate in 80 percent of the project over a period of 11 months, he was glad to be able to grasp C&S discipline. “In the end, it was not as complex and difficult to learn.” “That said, I still want to learn more about M&E too!” he added. Jinhui concedes that learning as much as possible tops his list of goals during his time at AcePLP’s CAD Traineeship Programme.
“Besides continuing to master the software, I hope to attain as much industry knowledge as possible, then will be easier when I transit to be a designer or engineer in the future.”
PROJECT SMAGIV: SMPIII Client Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co. Ltd. Size 5,000 m² (approx. 70% the area of a soccer field) Tender Budget SGD 7 million To build Sumitomo Chemical Singapore’s third Poly Methyl Methacrylate (PMMA) Monomer plant in Jurong Island Fun Facts 1. PMMA Monomer is widely used as a raw material for manufacturing plastic screens for LCD displays and other industrial applications and is one of Singapore’s exports 2. Sumitomo Chemical Singapore is one of PMMA’s leading manufacturers.
Jinhui is currently assigned on an M&E Project with Hitachi Elevators Asia.
