This October, we meet Sheik Uduman, who joined us in February 2012. After completing classroom CAD training, he has been assigned to clients Hitachi Plant Technologies, Expand Construction, and EWC Engineers. Sheik first started doing electrical drafting services for a West Gate project at Hitachi. In his second assignment, he learned more about architecture, structural and M&E services in Expand Construction. Now increasingly versatile, he is on his third assignment at EWC Engineers where he works closely with M&E designers for Bio-sensor Intervention Center. Sheik shared that he has been working in various versions of AutoCAD all the while.

When asked about the ease of transitions between assignments, the lucky chap said, “All has been smooth!” He also added, “People were always willing to teach me new things and it was easy for me to adapt to new environments.” Was it all luck? Some trainees have found the transitions tough. “I always try to be friendly with clients,” he said, revealing his style. “So that I can learn more from them and contribute happily too.” The main challenge to him on each assignment is time constraint. He observed that clients are mostly under constant stress, so there is always last minute work tasked to him where speed is expected.

“But the issue of time is theirs,” he said. “My duty is just to stay focused and get the work done ASAP.” He comforts himself in the knowledge that speed comes with practice automatically. So far from all the assignments, he has learnt about the kind of challenges people face: time management, teamwork… He also got a chance to meet people from different cultures and was exposed to politics, of course. “Everywhere has politics!” he said. “Understanding this has helped me find a way to be patient and bring peace too.”

Sheik’s pearls of wisdom – “In my opinion, we as a CAD Trainees must learn to be patient. Just be confident and believe in yourself. In the beginning we face problems.

By solving them, we become more talented.”

Tips for new trainees Tidbits from Sheik: How to cope with work #1: Be patient #2: Be ever ready to learn #3: Stay focused #4: Be friendly to the clients and you will be able to learn more from them #5: Just be confident and believe in yourself!
