The beats go on
Back in the ‘80s, dance music that fused Latin and hip-hop erupted in clubs in New York and then spread to Miami, Chicago and other cities across the U.S. They called it freestyle. On Nov. 6, the Trump Taj Mahal will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the genre with a four-hour extravaganza featuring 21 acts, including Lisa Lisa, Stevie B, the Cover Girls, Noel, Judy Torrez, George Lamond, K7 and his group TKA. The artists will roll out their dance hits: “Spring Love,” “Party Your Body,” “All Cried Out,” “In A Dream,” “Louder Than Love,” “No Reason to Cry” and “Bad of the Heart,” to name a few. “There will be so many hit records, so many stars, there’s at least one song for everyone,” said Vito Bruno, who is producing the show for his company, AMPM Entertainment Concepts Inc. The concert will be embellished with $2 million in equipment, featuring LED screens and designer lighting. PreCover Girls produced video segments will augment the show. “These are loyal fans,” Bruno said. “They’re the younger brothers and sisters of those who came to the Disco Ball we produced.” One of the headliners, K7, acknowledged the role New York City dance clubs played in spreading the gospel of freestyle through such hits as Shannon’s “Let the Music Play.” Some of today’s major pop artists grew up listening to the sound, particularly Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, said K7, who grew up as Louis Sharp in Spanish Harlem. It’s more of a street sound as opposed to other 1980s acts such as Bon Jovi, which were more for a pop audience, said K7. With freestyle, the dance music was accelerated to 125 beats per minute. “Harlequin-style love songs were sung over these beats and it caught fire,” he said. “Other places embraced it.” IF YOU GO: Vito Bruno presents the 25th Anniversary of Freestyle in the Arena at Trump Taj Mahal on Nov. 6. Show time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $50 to $125. Get them at 800-736-1420, ticketmaster.com or at the Taj Box Office. For box office hours, call 609-449-5150.

Mapping Monopoly
Travel editor tours A.C. through view of board game Story by WILLIAM SOKOLIC, Courier-Post Staff Robert Reid knew Monopoly. And he knew Atlantic City. But he never made the connection between game and city until last year. As the U.S. Travel Editor for Lonely Planet, Reid saw a story in his enlightenment. With video camera in tow, he visited Atlantic City last month. “I am always searching for alternative source guidebooks,” Reid said. He created one before by examining the lyrics in Billy Joel songs. Monopoly is like that, he said. Indeed, for a look at the pre-casino Atlantic City, the Monopoly board is the best way to go back, Reid said. “This trip resonated with people. It’s a lot of fun and it counts as work for me. The reaction to seeing all these places, it was exciting. And the game itself is timeless and esthetically appealing.” That Parker Brothers is celebrating 75 years of Monopoly is icing on the cake. Reid visited every property on the board. One of the truisms he came away with during his visit was the relative value of the properties compared to the real streets even many years after Charles Darrow invented the game. Boardwalk and Park Place still represent the high point in value, despite the economic downturn. Baltic and Mediterranean avenues still have comparatively less real estate value. But Reid didn’t dwell on the low rent district in his analysis. Marvin Gardens was one of his favorite stops. “It’s the only property outside Atlantic City. It’s a great housing community. They’re like the little houses you put on the board. There’s something charming about the story of Marvin Gardens.” The community straddles Margate and Ventnor, and is named for the first three letters of each city. So Marvin Gardens is misspelled in the game, a fact Parker Brothers acknowledged some years ago, but elected not to correct. This Park Place, Monopoly sign can be There were disappointments, Reid said. found along Boardwalk in Atlantic City “It’s unfortunate you can’t see the original train station,” he said. Atlantic Avenue was another highlight with its eclectic Princeton Antiques book shop and the pre-casino Baltimore Grill. Atlantic Avenue also houses Dock’s Oyster House, a restaurant dating back to 1897. Reid stayed at the Irish Pub Inn above the restaurant on St. James Place days before it closed for the season.

Travel editor Robert Reid found the Princeton Antiques store along real word Atlantic Avenue in Atlantic City. Another spot conjured from the Monopoly board features the Abseon Lighthouse, on Pacific Avenue, near Vermont
“It’s one of the most memorable hotels in the U.S.,” he said. The sea breeze blows in. The décor and furnishings come from local estate sales. The floors are slanted. It’s a little clunky. “But you get a sense of a different time. It’s a way to experience a different era in Atlantic City. When you go to the places locals talk about, they talk about that inn. I have a soft spot for St. James Place now,” Reid said. The history of Atlantic City through the eyes of local residents was overwhelming. “It whet my appetite for more, in a way that really surprised me. On one level this tour is a gimmick. But the payoff is real. It leads to conversations. Monopoly cuts across generations. It’s fun, nostalgic. It’s an extra bonus for that area.” Reid thinks the city should do more to highlight the Monopoly connection. A handful of signs are on the boardwalk, but don’t always speak to actual streets in the game. And he lamented the lack of signs along Martin Luther King Boulevard acknowledging its past as Illinois Avenue. “I do not expect to be a master after one visit,” Reid said. “It makes me want to know more. It’s a starting point. Next year, I might come back and see if I can flesh it out. I am not done with this city.” To see the video created by Robert Reid, visit lonelyplanet.com/usa/new-jersey/atlantic-city.

Penn & Teller’s silent magician talks the talk Penn & Teller always do a meet and greet after every show, and at Harrah’s it will be no exception. “It’s part of the pleasure we take in doing the show. It’s like partying with friends after the show,” said Te ller. The duo has often performed in Atlantic City. In fact, in 1989, they filmed “Penn & Teller Get Killed,” a comedy mystery set against the backdrop of an Atlantic City in transition. “We wanted to set the movie in a place where we actually performed. We were pretending it was a story set in our real lives as performers. We started to play in Atlantic City from time to time and we were intrigued with the contrast between the casino strip and the older city attached to it,” Teller said. Te ller liked the exploration of images on the Boardwalk late at night, including a chase scene on the wooden way in rolling chairs. These days Penn & Teller can be seen in their long-running show on Showtime. “Penn & Teller: Bull****!” tackles the frauds and fakes behind such topics as talking to the dead, alien abductions, feng shui, vaccination opposition and bottled water. And they do it with colorful language and nudity, neither a factor in their stage act. “We bring in a little rough language Courier-Post file and sex to the table,” said Te ller, who began his show business career as one third of the Asparagus Valley Cultural Society, which featured Penn and a funny music scholar named Weir Chrisemer. The act lasted six years and out of it came the partnership of Penn & Teller. The new act floundered for a few years. “We’re big on
Harrah’s celebrates 30 years in Atlantic City
On Nov. 23, 1980, Harrah’s became the first casino to open off the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, building on land in the marina district of the resort. The ownership of the parent company changed hands several times since, but Harrah’s has remains one of the more stable casinos in the city. Now, three decades later and with a number of hotel towers added, Harrah’s remains one of the industry leaders, even in a sluggish casino economy. Its success has even attracted marina companions - Borgata and Trump Marina. “Through thoughtful leadership, prudent investment and a never-ending quest to understand both the market and the potential market, Harrah’s has consistently remained a top performer in Atlantic City,” said analyst Joseph Weinert, of the Linwood-based Spectrum Gaming Group. “It has been unafraid to make bold investments and face the many competitive challenges, both within the city and in the Mid-Atlantic region. Along the way, it has earned a well-deserved reputation as a good corporate and community citizen.” Harrah’s newest hotel tower, The Waterfront, opened in 2008 and brought the room total to more than 2,500. The property also has some 160,000 square feet of casino. The project also included the Waterfront Buffet and the successful attraction, The Pool. “The team works hard to have a well-run operation to get through the challenging times,” said Stanford Le, vice president of marketing for Harrah’s Resort. The typical customer has not changed much, Le said. Just gotten older. Maybe those who came in the 1980s are the same who come today, That is why this anniversary is important for people who have grown

up with the company, he said. “Our core customer is still a slot customer,” Le said. “We still have a large number of slots. Table games have grown, but we have not shifted into a table games model.” Since October, Harrah’s has held a number of events for top players, from an intimate dinner with Eastern Division president, Don Marrandino, to an upcoming event with Harrah’s corporate CEO, Gary Loveman. The celebrations extend to employees as well. Harrah’s has about 120 of its day-one employees still on the payroll. “They’ve seen the property grow up,” Le said. A few public events are geared toward the 30th anniversary including the $300,000 30th Anniversary Sweepstakes. Players can receive one entry for every 30 base reward credits earned playing slots and table games through Nov. 28. Activate entries between 6 a.m. on Nov. 24 and 8 p.m. on Nov. 28. The drawing will be on between Noon and 10 p.m. that day. Winners have 15 minutes to claim their prize, or prize will be forfeited. The casino has also had anniversary giveaways of sweatshirts and other gifts. The retailers sell specialty items for the anniversary, too and Harrah’s restaurants continue to have different specials. Harrah’s Entertainment, Inc. is the world’s largest provider of branded casino entertainment through operating subsidiaries. Since its beginning in Reno, Nevada 70 years ago, Harrah’s has grown through development of new properties, expansions and acquisitions, and now owns or manages casino resorts on four continents.
flops. The art of surviving is to expect flops and be delighted when they’re not,” Teller said. After playing small clubs, theaters and the Renaissance Fair circuit, Penn & Teller’s off-beat brand of magic and comedy gained national attention when their stage show opened off-Broadway in 1985, leading to appearances on “Late Night with David Letterman,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Miami Vice.” In 1987, their stage show moved to Broadway, the first of two successful runs. Penn & Teller have written best-selling books “Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends,” “How to Play with Your Food,” and “How to Play in Traffic.” A decade ago, the pair settled into a steady, long term gig at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. “It’s such a luxury to have your own theater with your own name. And we get to sleep in our own beds and not go through airport security,” Te ller said. Being in the same location night after night requires always generating new material, he said. “It’s our job to come up with something new and different.” When it comes to new material, the final look often comes out of disagreement between the two men, Teller said. “I say `That’s stupid.’ Penn says `That won’t work if we do it this way.’ Ours is a colorful way of working.” Despite the comfort zone at the Rio, Penn & Teller still hit the road. Would Teller like to add a summer extended stay in Atlantic City to complement Las Vegas? “I’m ready,” he said. IF YOU GO Penn & Teller perform at 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday in The Concert Venue at Harrah’s, 777 Harrah’s Boulevard. Tickets are $45 to $75 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000, online at ticketmaster. com or at the Harrah’s Box Office, (609) 441-5786. For more information, visit pennandteller.com and www.playdeadnyc.com. Harrah’s entry into Atlantic City came by way of Holiday Inns, Inc. Michael Rose, who ran Holiday Inns, announced plans to build two casino-hotels in Atlantic City, including one on the Boardwalk. As a subsidiary of Holiday Inns, Harrah’s became the operator of a casino opened in 1980 on marshland a mile and a half north of Atlantic City’s boardwalk and named Harrah’s Marina Hotel Casino which had 506 guest rooms. From a property standpoint, Harrah’s is one of only a handful of properties in Atlantic City that has reinvested in their product and reaped the rewards with a property that remains relevant and healthy in a very challenging environment,’’ said analyst Cory Morowitz of Morowitz Gaming Advisors. In 1984, Harrah’s opened, in partnership with developer Donald J. Trump, the tallest building on the Atlantic City boardwalk - the 39-story Harrah’s Trump Plaza hotel and casino. The joint venture, built Courier-Post file by the Trump Organization on Trump land but with Harrah’s money, ended in acrimony when the competing Trump’s Castle made its debut the following year, right across the street from Harrah’s Marina. In 1986, Trump bought Harrah’s half-share in Trump Plaza.

Teller talks. For more than 35 years, the diminutive magiciancomic has never uttered a word on stage. While his silence will speak volumes when he performs with Penn Gillette at Harrah’s this weekend, away from the spotlight, Te ller has plenty to say with his voice. Te ller’s attraction to silence took root as a teen. “All I ever heard was dumb stuff when magicians talked. Like `Here’s a red ball.’ So? Or `Last year I travelled through India’ and I knew they were never east of Cherry Hill,” said Te ller. Te ller spent a lot of time watching people to learn how to strip away talking. “It’s a cool way to communicate with the audience,” said Te ller, whose silent, occasionally creepy, magic mixes well with Penn’s clown college education and juggling expertise. A classics major in college, Teller taught school for six years so his nature is in being verbal and specific, he said. “Take that away and it forces me to have clarity,” said Te ller, who co-wrote and directed “Play Dead,” which officially opens off-Broadway in New York next week. Do not confuse Te ller’s approach with that of a mime, he cautions. “Part of my style is a rebellion against mime. Mime is made out of fragile sugar.” In Atlantic City, audiences can expect a mix of classic and new pieces blended together. Penn & Teller do one sleight of hand with a miniature toy cow. An audience member covers the bit on video. “The audience has a different perspective from the guy on stage so there are interesting turns and twists,” Te ller said.

If you get into singing Joe Cocker’s version of ‘’With a Little Help From my Friends,” complete with spastic arm movements, Karaoke Night at Trump Plaza’s Liquid Bar is the place to be. Every Wednesday from 8 p.m. to midnight, DJ Mi-
chael James, of 100.7 WZXL, plays host with a selection of more than 100,000 songs. Cocker is one of the stalwarts requested by regulars, James said, along with a bunch as disparate as Etta James, Johnny Cash and The Beatles. “We get requests for just about every kind of music on Wednesday nights. From Sinatra to Sublime. B-52’s to ‘’Grease’’ music. Doo wop, Motown, disco, classic rock. There is no number one favorite. It varies week to week,” said James, who plays dance and rock requests between singers so as not to alienate those who do not want to sing. Located just inside the Boardwalk entrance, Liquid Bar serves $3 draft beers, $4 glasses of wine and $5 cocktails during Karaoke night.

A Taste of France, Spain & Italy. Rick Springfield rocks the Borgata
Take a culinary tour of France, Spain and Italy with the specialty cuisine of Borgata’s celebrated chefs Michael Chiarlanza, Romeo DiBona, Thaddeus DuBois, Stephen Kalt, Michael Mina, Wolfgang Puck, Ron Ross, Michael Schulson and Geoffrey Zakarian. With a wide variety of beer, wine and spirits, you’ll find countless ways to Savor Borgata.
Let’s get this out in the open. Rick Springfield is not a one trick pony. He’s not defined by his monster smash, “Jessie’s Girl.” Springfield has recorded 16 other top 40 hits in his career and sold 20 million records. He’s also an author. A songwriter. A cruise host. An actor. A soap star. And he still kicks it as leader of a live rock band. The band rolls into Borgata’s Music Box Nov. 5. Springfield promises a muscular band and audience interaction. “We do the hits and new stuff and we hope to run off stage hot and sweaty at the end,” he said in a phone interview. The more recent hits include “What’s Victoria’s Secret” and “Venus in Overdrive,” the latter the title of Springfield’s last studio rock album. You’re also likely to hear Springfield’s version of “Jet,” the hit by Paul McCartney and Wings he recorded live. “Half the purpose of my show is to play new music. And those songs get a great reaction. They sound great live. It’s hard to just sit there when I play them,” he said. The show has no down moments, Springfield promised. Last year, the Australian born singer released “My Precious Little One,” a collection of lullabies he created for his own sons when they were children. Springfield is excited for his third annual Rick Springfield and Friends Cruise on Carnival Lines Nov. 15 to 20. The cruise will visit Nassau, Half Moon Cay and Grand Turk. “It’s an incredible time,” he said. “We do stuff we wouldn’t do on tour. We have movie night where we make fun of various films.” He and his friends, Kevin Cronin, of REO Speedwagon, will get up close and personal with Q and A’s about their careers and songwriting. Former MTV VJ, Mark Goodman, hosts. Springfield rose to prominence in the U.S. in 1981 with the release of the catchy, “Jessie’s Girl.” Like so many young people who grew up in Britain and Australia, The Beatles and the other British invasion bands shaped his musical future. But acting was as much a part of his career as singing. He originated the character of Dr. Noah Drake on the soap “General Hospital” which he played in the early 1980s and again from late 2005 to 2008. Don’t look for Noah Drake to return to General Hospital. “It’s the hardest gig in the acting world. You have to memorize a lot and do it real fast,” he said. But he hopes to do more e pisodes of “Californication,” a Showtime series which stars David Duchovny. Last year he appeared in four episodes of the series. In addition, his autobiography, “Late, Late at Night,” reached the New York Times best seller list. According to his web site, the book “resonates with a witty, wry, self-deprecating, brutally honest voice.” He talks about not only his rise in the entertainment world, his passion for music and his family, but his longtime battle with depression and thoughts of suicide, the death of his father, and his decision to drop out at the peak of fame. He’s also writing scripts for television and his publisher wants more material. Of all his professional endeavors, writing music is his favorite. “Playing live is my next favorite thing,” he said. IF YOU GO: Rick Springfield plays Borgata’s Music Box Friday. Show time is 9 p.m. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased through theborgata.com, 866-900-4849 or at Borgata’s Box Office. Star-studded show to benefit beaches
Story by WILLIAM SOKOLIC, Courier-Post Staff ATLANTIC CITY - With the casinos hovering over the Boardwalk, it might be easy to forget that Atlantic City fronts a beach. Pepsi and its Refresh Project haven’t forgotten and will be promoting Beaches 4 Beaches, a weekend of sun in Atlantic City next summer. Red Eye Entertainment in partnership with Powerhouse Entertainment selected Atlantic City to host the event as a way to boost tourism and provide a national showcase for the resort and its attractions. The live musical part of the event will be held in Boardwalk Hall. Among other elements, the preliminary plans call for a starstudded, televised event and a compilation album, CD/DVD of the participating artists, who will perform personal arrangements of famous beach songs. The project will also benefit Clean Ocean Action, whose mission is to improve the degraded water quality of the marine waters off the New Jersey and New York coast. Clean Ocean Action is a leading national and regional voice working to protect waterways using science, law, research, education and citizen action. Future events would be held in various beach communities on the East or West Coast. Money raised during the concert will be used for ocean preservation; tourism marketing opportunities for affected beach communities; and to provide funding for ocean explorations and to clean up beach and ocean areas. A recent fundraiser netted $250,000, a fraction of the total budget for the project of $1.2 million. The $250,000 would be applied to concert production costs, the compilation album, artist contracts and special even production. For more on the event, visit Pepsi Refresh Project at pep.si/aUzD6m. The two principals are Diane McGraw, of red eye entertainment and John Robertson, of Powerhouse Entertainment. McGraw has been involved as an executive in the sports and entertainment industry for the past 30 years. Currently, she is president of red eye entertainment, a sports and entertainment production company. Prior
