Valentine’s Day events paint the town red S t o r i e s b y W I L L I A M S O KO L I C , C o u r i e r- P o s t S t a f f

What better way for lovers to show their affection for each other than a trip to this seaside resort? Whether it’s dinner and a nightcap, an overnight stay in a suite, a visit to a lighthouse tower, or just a stroll on the boardwalk in the winter chill, the town offers more than a chance for romance. Here are some special holiday events: The return of the Valentine’s Day Group Wedding, Vow Renewal and Civil Union Ceremony takes place on Feb. 14 beginning at 2 p.m. in the Ballroom at Boardwalk Hall. Sponsored by the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority, the ceremony is free for all couples and their guests, and includes a champagne toast, wedding cake and photo opportunities. Couples who want to take part must pre-register through the ACCVA’s website at atlanticcitynj.com/group_tours/atlantic_city_group_ wedding.aspx Boardwalk Hall is located at 2301 Boardwalk. For more information, call (609) 449-7126 or e-mail ACWedding@accva.com The Absecon Lighthouse presents “An Evening of Romance & Renewal” on Feb. 14, from 7 to 10 p.m. Climb the lighthouse tower with the one you love. Catered aphrodisiacs and goodies will await you on each level of the climb, and you can toast each other with champagne and soft spirits. Visitors can take home a keepsake professional 5-by-7 photograph by wedding specialist John DeMaio. The event will include dancing to party music and romantic tunes (for those slow dances) on the hardwood floors of the lighthouse. The Walk’s Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory will provide sweet treats. And a special flower from Stem by David Tutera will add another romantic touch. A minister will perform a short group-wedding vow renewal at 8:30 p.m. for married couples. Tickets for this event are $125 per couple. Those who want to sleep over can get tickets plus a luxe king classic room at the chic Chelsea Hotel for $225. To view accommodations, go to www.thechelseaac.com. Absecon Lighthouse is a member of the Atlantic City GLBT Alliance, and invites all couples to this celebration. Reserve a spot by calling the lighthouse at (609) 449-1360. Absecon Lighthouse also toasts the Valentine’s Day weekend on Feb. 12 and 13 by offering two climbs for the price of one. Absecon Lighthouse is at 31 S. Rhode Island Ave., and is open to visitors Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission for adults is $7; children 4

Throughout the interactive show, visitors will have the opportunity to ask questions and touch many of the animals. The winter one-two punch of snow and cold has left many drained

and longing for summer. The cure? A trip to the two-story Immersion Spa in Borgata’s Water Club Hotel. On a winter’s day what could be better than a warm, tension-relieving massage? The spa features a 25-yard inďŹ nityedge lap pool; 16 experience rooms, including two deluxe couple’s suites with oversized Japanese-style Hanoki soaking tubs and 180-degree views; a state-of-the-art ďŹ tness center; a gourmet spa menu by Chef Geoffrey Zakarian; a Vichy shower wet room with heated Hamam table; three skincare-ready rooms; two individual suites with dedicated private showers and Jacuzzi tubs. Immersion also offers three soft-pack oatation device tables, designed to increase product absorption by 30 percent. Additionally, The Water Club has 28 deluxe-suite accommodations with a dedicated spa room ready for body treatments, massages and facials for a private spa experience. One of the unique aspects of Immersion Spa is its location and oor-to-ceiling 360-degree window views, said Jen Rausch, director of spa operations. “Located on the 32nd and 33rd oors, high above Atlantic City, Immersion is one of the most awe-inspiring destinations on the property, with peerless Atlantic Ocean and skyline views,â€? Rauch said. “Immersion blends natural materials with a modern design, including a river rock archway with cascading water; slate, green marble, stone and glass detailing; and lush indoor greenery.â€?

Services include seven different facials, eight various massages from traditional to deep tissue to hot stone, seven couple’s experiences and 11 additional treatments such as reexology. Immersion also offers a choice of a dozen body experiences such as the Ancient Rituals of Marrakech, which exfoliates and detoxiďŹ es the body head to toe. An exfoliation and wrap with espresso mud body scrub is used to deeply cleanse and soften the skin, while a pore reďŹ ning mask targets the sensitive areas of the face. With the Bamboo Rain treatment, guests lie on the warm Hamam table, while their body is vigorously buffed with a foaming Bamboo Lemongrass scrub. Then the rains of the Vichy shower clean off the scrub while easing stress as the warm water targets speciďŹ c points of tension. Nerves will be calmed with the soothing sound of the rain. The relaxation will be sealed with a rich application of Lemongrass lotion. The Moor Mud Body Float targets areas of tension and stress. The body is exfoliated then wrapped in a unique mixture of mineral mud that nourishes, detoxiďŹ es and relaxes aching muscles as a warm soft pack bed releases all pressure from the body. After a cleansing shower, a full-body deep tissue massage completes this pampering experience. Arrive at least one half-hour prior to scheduled appointment to allow time to register and change into a robe. The spa experience permits full use of all spa facilities for the day, from as early as 6 a.m. While most of the treatments are best enjoyed without clothing, guests are

welcome to wear whatever makes them most comfortable. Everyone is provided with a robe and sandals. Disposable bathing suits are available upon request. Spa employees recommend showering before your massage or body treatment. A specially prepared spa cuisine menu is available to patrons of Immersion. The Spa Concierge can assist in selecting and ordering a meal delivered to a reserved location by the lap pool. Immersion offers three January specials, all $99 for 50 minutes of treatment. Saturdays are excluded. -An Express Facial includes a facial cleansing, toning and moisturizing, followed by a hydrating scalp treatment. -A Winter Warm Up Massage for back, neck, shoulders, feet and scalp. -Ciao Cellulite wrap diminishes the look of cellulite as it slims. The Express Facial and Winter Warm Up are available for that price in February, too. So are these other promotions: -Hot Chocolate Wrap is a chocolate lover’s paradise with a dry brush exfoliation to prepare skin to be wrapped in a

velvety chocolate mask with a hydrating chocolate lotion application to follow. Cost is $99 for 50 minutes. There are two romantic couples’s specials available Feb 11 to 14, each costing $580 for 100 minutes: -The Irresistible Couple’s Love Potion begins with the scent of aphrodisiacdriven Frangipani exfoliation as the couple prepares for the soak of a lifetime immersed in the exotically fragranced waters. This journey ends with a Couple’s Swedish Massage. -The Light My Fire Couple’s Experience includes a Vanilla Brown Sugar exfoliation, a romantic soak and side-byside Swedish Massages with chocolate lotion. â–

The Gambler’s Classic is not a train, nor a poker tournament. It’s an indoor race with midget cars and they roar into Boardwalk Hall Friday and Saturday for the ninth annual competition. The day begins at 4:30 p.m. Friday with time trials. At night are qualifying heat events for TQ-Midgets and B-Mains for the 600cc Micro Sprint Cars, Slingshots and Champ Karts. It will culminate with a 20-lap 600cc Micro Sprint Car main event and a 30-lap TQ-Midget feature race. The Saturday program kicks off at 5 p.m. with Fanfest, which will be held

on the indoor racing surface. Beginning at 7 p.m., heat races and semis will lead up to the 40-lap Gamblers Classic for TQ-Midgets, with Slingshots and Champ Karts also on the schedule. “Indoor racing is some of the most intense you’ll ever see,â€? said Lou Cicconi Jr. of Aston, Pa., who captured his second Gambler’s Classic title last year. “I know race fans will want to experience the speed and tight competition that happens when you are racing indoors.â€? This will be a ďŹ rst for dirt modiďŹ ed ace driver Danny Johnson, 50, of Phelps, N.Y.

“It’ll be a whole new experience, one that I hope to have fun at. In fact the only time I raced in the month of January was a few years ago when I competed in a snowmobile race, said Johnson, who will drive a Lou Cicconi Jr.-prepared second entry. Let It Ride is easy to learn Let it ride is one of many poker-based table games that have proliferated on the casino oor as poker itself has gained in popularity. A variation of Five Card Stud, the game offers players an opportunity to control two of three bets. The game is popular because it offers potentially high payouts. It’s also easy to learn, according to the Borgata website. Players do not go up against the dealer or any other player. Their goal is to create the best possible poker hand by using their three cards and two community cards. There are three circles in front of each player on the table. The circles are marked with the numbers 1, 2 and $. To start the game a player places three equal bets in each circle. Each player and the dealer receive three cards face down. The dealer discards one card, CP-0010427257

leaving two, which become community cards used by all players. In Let It Ride, players do not play against anyone. Players win simply by forming poker hands. After looking at their three cards, players have the option to take back the bet in circle No. 1 or “Let It Ride.â€? Then the dealer will turn up the ďŹ rst of the two community cards. This card is used as the fourth card for all the players’ hands. Players now have the option of taking back the second bet or letting it ride. They may take down the second bet even if they let the ďŹ rst bet ride. After all the players make their decisions for the second bet, the dealer will turn up the second community card. This card completes the ďŹ ve-card hand for every player. At this point the dealer will pay all the winning bets.

Bets are paid on the following basis: -royal ush: 1,000 to 1 -straight ush: 200 to 1 -four of a kind: 50 to 1 -full house: 11 to 1 -ush: 8 to 1 -straight: 5 to 1 -three of a kind: 3 to 1 -two pairs: 2 to 1 -pair of tens or better: 1 to 1. A royal ush is a hand of A, K, Q, J and 10 of the same suit. A straight ush is any ďŹ ve cards in sequence in the same suit. A full house is three of a kind and two of a kind. A ush is ďŹ ve cards of the same suit. A straight is ďŹ ve sequential cards regardless of suit. “It’s an entertaining break from blackjack and other games with the chance for a big jackpot no matter how remote,â€? said Roger Gros, a gaming analyst and publisher of Global Gaming Business Magazine. â–
