Easter Brunch lasts all day at Country Club For the past five years, Atlantic City Country Club has set out quite the spread for Easter Sunday brunch. Sunday Brunch is part of the country club landscape and has been for years, but for Easter, Chef Ed Daggers takes pains to make it special. For one thing the time gives new meaning to brunch. The dining room opens at 9:30 a.m. and doesn’t close until 5:30 p.m. “I change the menu every year,” Daggers said. “We always have the stand-bys like an omelet station, waffles, eggs Benedict, bacon, sausage and a carving station. But I also try to change or add a unique item to our carving station as well. For Easter, we have leg of lamb with a mint demi glace. Sometimes we do Virginia ham or venison or we even carve whole sides of fish like salmon or tuna loins.” Dagger also likes to do something different on the seafood side. “This year, we also have fresh Gulf grouper with lobster caviar and butter, a great fish this time of year and a good, firm white fish the seafood lovers will enjoy.” A Pennsylvania native, Dagger is also doing house-made Pennsylvania Dutch egg noodles, with spring peas and prosciutto ham. And he added an Asian twist with Hunan-style stir fried shrimp and broccoli. “We try to mix it up when we do brunch every week like adding some kind of action station like woks with stir fried shrimp or chicken or both. But for Easter, I try to have cool and different entrees that are not too far out there because we get so many families. We want everyone to find

Revel looks to change nightlife in A.C.

Neil Moffitt dishes on new resort’s vision for entertainment By WILLIAM SOKOLIC Courier-Post Staff

In the late 1990s, British-born Neil Moffitt created the Godskitchen, which took electronic music and fashioned a total experience for clubgoers. Two years later, he formed Angel Music Group, which produced arena events throughout the U.K. and America. In 2004, he brought Godskitchen to Las Vegas and turned around the failing ICE Las Vegas by booking the world’s top DJs. Moffitt formed Angel Management Group to focus on the American market. He designed his first nightlife venue for a casino company in St. Louis. Come 2010, he and his team acquired Pure Management Group, assuming operations of PURE Nightclub and Venus Pool Club at Caesars Palace; LAX Nightclub and Savile Row at Luxor; Social House at CityCenter; Coyote Ugly Las Vegas at New York-New York; Dick’s Last Resort at Excalibur; and Aura Nightclub at Atlantis in the Bahamas. In addition, Angel promoted and programmed events for Tabu Ultra Lounge and Studio 54 at MGM Grand and ROK Vegas at New York-New York. With that as a backdrop, Moffitt, CEO of Angel Management Group, landed the contract to design and operate the nightlife and entertainment components at Revel, from clubs to arenas. Moffitt spoke to the Courier-Post about his partnership with Revel, which opened Monday in Atlantic City. Q: What attracted you to Revel? A: Revel was an intriguing project. I think they took a holistic approach to redefine gaming for the Northeast. That empowered us to deliver nightlife projects that would compete in any gaming market in the world. I was extremely impressed with CEO Kevin DeSanctis and his vision. I was impressed with his design and general feeling of the hotel. We have the opportunity to redefine the market. In my studies of the market, I didn’t find anything in Atlantic City that I would see as a competitor in a larger gaming market, which has been ignored by a lot of people developing casinos in the past 10 years. When Revel took that stand, it was like a breath of fresh air and that drew us to Atlantic City. Kevin’s vision is now a reality. He has delivered and I am excited to be part of it. Q: What have you done with Revel? A: We have four venues in the hotel that appeal to different demographics. The daylife concept, nightlife concept, center bar entertainment and live entertainment. The center bar is The Social, which presents live entertainment in the middle of the casino floor. Live entertainment is represented by Ovation Hall. The Social and Ovation Hall are now open. We’ll keep the opening of others close to the vest. Q: What is daylife? A: The daylife concept emerged over

Neil Moffitt is the man behind the design and operation of nightlife and entertainment at Atlantic City’s new Revel. He has lots of experience energizing clubs and night spots in Las Vegas. PHOTO PROVIDED the past five years in Southern Europe. People were intrigued about having a good time in the day and not just by lying in the sun with an iPod. In Las Vegas, five or six such clubs are programmed as entertainment venues, clubs like Wet Republic and Encore Beach Club. They are high-energy, vibrant daytime night clubs. Not everyone wants to stay out at 4 a.m. Some people want day and night options. At Revel, we are converting space that can entertain in the day as well in the night. It’s adjacent to the boardwalk beneath the night club. We felt no one really looked at that in Atlantic City. We feel these kinds of clubs will be developed by

others down the road. I would hope this affects beach bars elsewhere in the city. Q: What affect will the nightlife scene have elsewhere in the city? A: I would like to think that Revel would result in making other casinos change, which would be beneficial to the entire market. Really the focus is on success. There are 40 million people within a full tank of gas. They have lots of choices. What Kevin has designed will give people a decision to make. Will they sit on a plane to go somewhere or go to Revel to embrace what is on their doorstep? Q: You established yourself in Las Vegas. What similiarties are there between the two gaming capitals?

A: Las Vegas and Atlantic City are structured for the gamer who likes to move around and has a choice. It’s a better environment for gamers. Atlantic City has the density and operators to present diverse offerings. Q: What is the future for Atlantic City? A: When it comes to investment and development, Atlantic City got left behind. If Revel was in Las Vegas, it would be a major player. I’m a believer in that success. People won’t let one casino have it all their own way. Atlantic City has its own identity. And it has the East Coast at its doorstep. In the next 10 years, it will develop its own marketplace.

Spirit Airlines adds new stops By WILLIAM SOKOLIC Courier-Post Staff

MORE INFORMATION Spirit Airlines will start flying from Atlantic City to Chicago on May 2, Detroit on May 3 For details on times and fares, and Atlanta on May 17. Spring brings more than sunshine and flowers and baseball. At the Atlantic City International Airport, spring brings more flights, enough to crisscross the U.S. This spring, Spirit Airlines will resume daily flights to Chicago and Detroit, and launch new seasonal service to Atlanta, with connections to Dallas. On March 1, Spirit began daily flights to Boston. “Once again, Spirit is meeting the demand for air service to Atlantic City from key markets starting with the return of daily service to Boston,” said Bart R. Mueller, executive director of the South Jersey Transportation Authority, the owner and operator of the airport. Chicago flights start May 2, Detroit on May 3 while Atlanta comes online May 17. Both Chicago and Detroit have connecting flights to Las Vegas and to Los Angeles. “We are happy that Spirit Airlines is adding Atlantic City to the more than 150 U.S. destinations served out of HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport,” said Aviation General Manager Louis Miller. “Our customers can now enjoy this additional nonstop service.” Low fares continue to be a selling point as Atlantic City Airport extends its reign as the U.S. airport with the overall lowest fares, according to a Jan. 26 report from the U.S. Department of Transportation Bureau of Transportation statistics. Spirit also has flights to Fort Myers, Myrtle Beach, Orlando, Tampa and West Palm Beach. “This year will be viewed as a transitional year as the airport coordinates with Atlantic City in identifying and targeting priority markets,” Mueller said.

Cage Fury Fighting Championship bouts take place in The Event Center, April 14 at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, One Borgata Way. Show time is 7 p.m. Tickets are $55 to $225 and can be purchased by calling (866) 900-4849, visiting www.theborgata.com or at the Borgata’s Box Office.

MMA fighters battle at Borgata

Jonavin Webb used his experience as a wrestler at Cherokee High School as a stepping stone to a career in mixed martial arts. The Marlton resident, 22, makes his pro debut April 14 at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa as part of the Cage Fury Fighting Championship. He’s already sold 150 tickets to friends and family. “I’m feeling confident about this. I’m the strongest I’ve ever felt,” said the welterweight, who carries a 5-0 record as an amateur into his fight against Robert Gittens. The evening will feature three title fights and 10 main card bouts, with Webb one of the later matches. In these MMA bouts, fighters battle for three rounds of five minutes each. Unlike boxing, MMA allows kicking, grappling and punching. “We are thrilled to partner with one of the country’s top mixed martial arts promoters,” said Joe Lupo, senior vice president of operations for Borgata. “This will be the first MMA event held at Borgata and having the CFFC brings a high caliber and high energy event to add to our diverse entertainment program is very exciting.” Veteran Greg Soto defends his welter-

weight strap against former teammate, George Sullivan. “I’m training with the best guys,” Soto said. “I’ll be ready for war.” Said Sullivan, “Being ex-training partners just makes this fight that much better.” Aljamain “Aljo” Sterling tries to keep his undefeated record intact when he takes on Casey “Full Speed” Johnson for the bantamweight title. In the main card, collegiate national champion Mike “the Cowboy” Wilcox will try to improve to 2-0 when he takes on the more experienced Shedrick Goodridge. Like Webb, Wilcox, of Buena, will have a large contingent of family and friends in the house. He graduated Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Pa, where he wrestled. “I still wanted to compete after college, and MMA was available,” Wilcox said in a phone interview. Webb, who also trains people in jujitsu, admits the money in MMA is not as good as in boxing. “But the fans and followers are getting way bigger and there’s a lot of room to grow. It’s fun to watch,” he said by phone.

Daryl takes ‘House’ on the road

Daryl Hall grew up steeped in soul music, so having Sharon Jones and newcomer Allen Stone as his co-stars for the traveling version of “Live from Daryl’s House” makes perfect sense. “It’s amazing. I love working with both of these people,” Hall said in a phone interview. “They do different facets of the sound I am part of, that tapped into my origins. Allen is like my musical son, he is so talented.” Both Jones and Stone have appeared on the webcast and TV show of the same name, which is recorded at Hall’s home in upstate New York. The show, dubbed Nu-Soul Revue, plays Borgata April 14. It’s part of a seven-city tour that also stops in Montclair and at the historic Beacon Theatre in New York. The stage show will feature each performer solo, and the guest stars in concert with Hall. And yes, the performance will include selections from the Hall and Oates catalog, Hall said. With fellow Philadelphia-area native John Oates, Hall recorded a string of hits in the 1970s and 1980s, including “Rich Girl,” “Private Eyes,” “Maneater” and others. While he continues to tour with Oates, Hall’s sideline has gained a lot of traction. “It’s so much fun to do. I like to think the original essence is still there, but it has evolved. Musicians get together with no audience watching. We tell stories, laugh and play music.” The segments have added food preparation and dinner conversations, too. As a bonus, another talent from the webcast — Philadelphia restaurateur and actor Tony Luke — will host a video segment on how to prepare his famous cheesesteak. Luke will talk about the process while the actual demonstration plays out on a large screen. There will be vouchers for a free sandwich at one of Luke’s places — including Borgata’s food court — after the show. Jones, who first appeared on “Live from Daryl’s House” in 2010, has released four albums with the Dap-Kings band, among them, “I Learned the Hard Way.” “Doing the show was such an honor

Daryl Hall brings his popular show to Borgata April 14. PHOTO PROVIDED and it was a thrill to be at Daryl’s house and to get to make music, relax and have a good time,” Jones said in a press release. Seattle native Stone made his “Daryl’s House” debut in February. He released his self-titled sophomore record in October. In addition to the webcast, “Live from Daryl’s House” is shown weekly in more than 80 percent of the U.S. markets, including KYW in Philadelphia. Going to television was part of the idea from the beginning, Hall said. “That’s why I had such high production values,” he said. Hall just completed the 54th episode. Among his guests: Cee Lo Green, Nick Lowe, Booker T and the MGs, Rob Thomas, Train Fitz & the Tantrums and Neon Trees. “I like to mix it up in every way, generational and musical,” Hall said. “I think it’s interesting and keeps me on my toes every show.” See episodes at www.livefromdaryls house.com.

IF YOU GO ‘Live from Daryl’s House’ with Daryl Hall, Sharon Jones and Allen Stone, plays The Music Box April 14 at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, One Borgata Way. Show time is 9 p.m. Tickets are $65-$75 and can be purchased at (866) 900-4849, www.theborgata.com or the Borgata’s Box Office.

Blue October goes deep

It’s Ladies Night at Harry’s

Check out free fashion advice, appetizers on third Thursdays

IF YOU GO Blue October jumps on stage Saturday at the House of Blues. TERESA JOLIE

Lead singer describes sound as ‘extreme highs and lows’ You’ve heard of punk rock. Prog rock. Folk rock. How about bipolar rock? That’s how lead singer and songwriter Justin Furstenfeld describes his band, Blue October, which plays The House of Blues. “That means extreme highs and lows. We have sad, slow and pretty songs, while the other half of us is angry and revengeful. But we speak from the hearts,” Furstenfeld said in a phone interview on the way to Norfolk, Va. The latest Blue October album, “Any Man in America,” takes the emotion to a personal level. “This is the first time we ever did a reality album,” Furstenfeld said of the collection of songs dealing with the trials and tribulations of his divorce and custody battles involving his 5-year-old daughter. The result is 13 songs that tell a tale of heartbreak and healing with anthemic music. Furstenfeld included his own failures as well. “Men do not get a chance to be fathers unless they’re an ATM machine, or unless they live in the same city,” he said, opening up about his sit-

uation. “It’s hard to keep the family, finances and business together. I never got a chance to be a father. I want to be a part of my daughter’s life.” This record was a chance for Furstenfeld to speak from his heart. “I never got that opportunity to do that in the court system. When my world was turned upside down and my daughter was being taken away from me, I was being told ‘you know it is not right but you are going to have to accept it.’ ” The album served as a catharsis for Furstenfeld, as well as a chance to tell his daughter everything will be OK. And on the subject of sad songs, the first record Furstenfeld noticed growing up was Roy Orbison’s classic “Crying.” “I was also fascinated by Michael Jackson. Hip-hop, too. How they all use words,” said the 36-year-old Texas native. He got into The Cure and the Cocteau Twins. Influences go deeper than that. Listen to “Into the Ocean” from “Foiled” and the harmonies give off a clear Simon and Garfunkel vibe. “Say It,” from “Approaching Normal,”

Blue October perform Saturday at the House of Blues, 801 Boardwalk. Show time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the House of Blues box office, all Ticketmaster locations, Ticketmaster.com or at (800) 736-1420.

bears the air of U2. U2’s “One” meant a lot to Furstenfeld as a child, he said. The song came out around the time of the riots in Los Angeles. “I was scared, even in Texas. I heard “One” play on the radio and thought if they put that song on that would stop everything, it was so touching. Music can help those things so much.” Furstenfeld already has written and the has band recorded most of the songs for the next album, which should be out this year. “We have so many songs back from early in the day. We have to put them out.” But the next batch will concentrate on the positives, he promised. The plan is to begin releasing songs to iTunes and radio once a month to gauge reaction. He sang a bit of “Things I Do at Night,” one of the new tunes. “When one reacts, we’ll jump on it,” he said. Don’t expect to hear this at the House of Blues. “No one buys albums anymore. They download. So if we do a new song, someone will record it.”

The ladies get their due at Harry’s Oyster Bar and Seafood on the third Thursday of each month. Ladies Night is devoted to food, fashion and fun at the restaurant in Bally’s Atlantic City. Local boutiques and salons give tips and every Ladies Night offers a freebie, such as a gift from Tanger Outlets or a 10-minute chair massage from the spa at Bally’s or a free manicure from Belleza Salon. In addition to complimentary appetizers, the evening includes live music, $5 glasses of red and white wine and $5 martinis. The next evening is scheduled for April 19. Harry’s Ladies Night is a vision turned to reality by Kim Brownell, the restaurant’s general manager. “It was a way to bring some fun during the drab winter months,” Brownell said. “I chose the third Thursday because it is in the middle of the month and there was not a lot happening around the city. And if I changed vendors each month and provided a variety, it would always be different and keep people coming back.” It’s worked. Since the first night in January, the numbers have grown dramatically, Brownell said.

Relax and say ahhhhh at new spa

Golden Nugget pampers from head to toe

When Landry Inc. chose to go into the spa business at its hotels, the company selected Atlantic City’s Golden Nugget as the launching pad. The Spa and Salon at the Golden Nugget opened March 29 with 11 treatment rooms, including one for couples with a bath ritual. That’s a fancy tub for the uninitiated. “We plan to brand our spa concept starting here in Atlantic City,” said Courtney Taylor, director of spa and salon operations, who was brought in from Las Vegas to get the spa off the ground. All manner of massages are available, from in-room to mom-to-be. And the spa has a full service hair and nail salon. “Our product lines and treatment services are amazing. This is above and beyond any of my expectations. We’re excited to offer guests another great venue where we can pamper and make them feel beautiful,” Taylor said. The spa lounge comes with refreshments such as coffee, tea, fruit and flavored water. “People can relax with their significant others,” she said. At more than 12,300 square feet, the spa features a co-ed lounge, whirlpools, steam and sauna for men and women, along with

a fitness studio containing treadmills, weights and ellipticals. “This pairs together fitness, health and wellness. Our treatments are side by side with fitness,” Taylor said. The fitness center is open to everyone for $15 and includes sauna, steam and fitness center. Those services are free of charge with any treatment. Where 98 percent of the spa goers in Las Vegas are tourists coming from out of town, that won’t be the case in Atlantic City. Here you’ll see a lot more people from throughout South Jersey. “It’s important we build a local relationship,” Taylor said.

IF YOU GO The Spa and Salon is on the fourth floor at the Golden Nugget, 1 Marina Way. Hours are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Visit www.goldennugget.com/atlanticcity for details and prices. Call (800) 777-1177 for reservations or e-mail gnacspa@gnacm.com.
