Then and Now:

Eastern Regional High School lum is taught within state-of-the-art learning facilities. Many organizations began when the school first opened. Several of these groups have withstood the test of time and are still maintained today; they include Student Council, National Honor Society, marching band and competitive sports. The original sports program had only freshman and junior varsity levels of competition until the first senior class was included. Fall sports recognized cross-country, football and field hockey. Winter sports included boys’ basketball, wrestling and a limited girls’ basketball program that was not in league competition. Spring heralded boys’ track and baseball. Today, Eastern’s athletic program totals 26 varsity level competitive sports teams, including Eastern’s field hockey team, which has won 16 consecutive New Jersey Group IV state championships, dating back to 1999. The original Eastern physical plant itself has had two additions, one built in 1970, costing $495,000, and a second one constructed in 1975, with a price tag of $3.7 million. The first addition included the 800 wing, expansion on the boys’ locker room and the building of the mini-gym (Gym #3). The second addition, which cost more than the original building, included the 100 and 200 wings

Senior High gym #1, media center, faculty workroom, rooms 301, 303 and 305, a second music room, print shop and building trades shop, rooms 401, 402, 403 and 404, tennis courts and an enlarged parking lot. The Senior High cafeteria also expanded by 50 percent. The Intermediate High School, designed by the Tarquini Organization, was completed in 1992, nearly doubling the overall plant capacity of the school district. In 2003, our sending districts approved the addition of six classrooms, five science laboratories, a technology classroom teacher’s room and restrooms to the Intermediate High School via a bond referendum. As part of the referendum, additional space was added to the Intermediate High School cafeteria and an updated physical education complex was constructed. This complex now houses a state-of-the-art weight room, athletic trainer’s office and treatment area, two coaches’ rooms and a meeting room. Lastly, as the final installment of the referendum, a weather protective canopy was added to the main entrance of the Senior High School. The football stadium was completed on Sept. 4, 1968, at a cost of $22,920 and in 1975, the field sprinkling system was installed. In September 2013, the Intermediate and Senior High Schools were combined to form

Suzanne Gongol arrived at Eastern High School two years after it opened, ready to teach the students history. She ended up making history herself: Gongol went on to become the high school’s first woman principal. “I was the vice principal first, so I wasn’t too nervous about accepting the position,� says Gongol. “My primary goal while there was to provide a good, solid academic program to the students that would prepare them for whatever they wanted to do after graduation. The thrilling thing was when kids would come back and say that we did prepare them well.� Gongol said she enjoyed many things about being principal, particularly the support of a caring faculty. She never heard teachers complain about staying after school for students who needed extra help, and there were always volunteers for

It is a wonderful place with a great community.� extracurricular activities. “Each year was memorable because of the students,� she says. “It was so interesting to watch them grow and mature throughout the years. They came in as apprehensive kids and graduated pretty selfassured. I never dreaded going to work because every day was an adventure.� Gongol’s tenure coincided with many

societal changes, including the emergence of the drug culture, a teen fashion revolution and the introduction of new technology. “Eastern High School was a very small but wonderful school when I arrived,� says Gongol. “We used to say it was the bestkept secret. There were about 800 kids in the school when I arrived, and when I left there were about 2,000. But regardless of how big the school became, we always felt like a family. It was a phenomenal ride.� Gongol says she cannot believe the school has been open for 50 years, and she is so happy to see it celebrating this important milestone. “We laid a good foundation for the school,� says Gongol. “I hope it continues on with the same high expectations and academic standards. It is a wonderful place 50 with a great community.� Q
