Melt away stress at Qua Baths & Spa Treat yourself to the new Lava Melt massage or Red Carpet Facial
The Lava Melt massage does not involve lava from a volcano. But the massage features a silky oil created from melting a wax candle comprised of hemp seed, soy, vitamin E and other ingredients. Therapists drip the oil on the body in the new massage offering at Caesars upscale Qua Baths & Spa, which goes for $160 for 50 minutes. “The candle is hydrating and moisturizing,” said masseuse Christina Callahan. Lava Melt is just one in an array of options, both new and otherwise. “We also have a restorative treatment balancing therapy to promote detoxification. It’s a body brushing with oils, then a massage,” said Andrea Magalhaes, regional spa director for Caesars Entertainment, who oversees both Qua and the Spa at Bally’s. The cost is $220. The therapy works on the back of the body with 16 steps using a number of products including a scalp nourishment, foot balm, hand scrub, infused mixing oil and aromatic mist. “We have a new Qua signature facial, the Red Carpet Facial. Celebrities use this for deep exfoliation,” Magalhaes said. The facial eliminates dull surface cells while re-texturing and revitalizing the skin. The treatment includes a relaxing paraffin
hand wax therapy, eye and lip contour, all for $165. The male equivalent, the Poker Face Facial, involves deep cleansing that treats ingrown hairs, razor burn and sensitivity to shaving. The face is cleansed and exfoliated, followed by a mask treatment, for $165. In addition, Qua offers a paraffin treatment for hand and feet for $25 each, using booties and mittens to hold the thickened wax in place. “It’s good for arthritis or dryness,” Magalhaes said. Among the top treatments are the Cleopatra Body Ritual for women and the Hail Caesar for men. “We treat you like royalty,” she said. The 110-minute treatment, which runs $300 each, involves a kiwi scrub to exfoliate skin, followed by a cocoon of green tea and clay to diminish the look of cellulite, a pressure point foot, scalp and a full body massage. Besides the treatments, Qua features an upgraded retail boutique, said Magalhaes, who came to Qua from the high-end spa at the Avanti Day Resort in Manalapan, Monmouth County. “I love it. I am totally in my element. It’s always changing, always something new,”

she said. “I was at a five-star spa, so I am used to high-end clientele.” Qua carries top line merchandise found at Neiman Marcus, Barney’s and other chic salons. The boutique includes lines of bath oils, lotions and other enhancers that add to the massage experience, the Lava Melt candle among them. Soaps from Portugal contain all natural ingredients to last
longer than more common brands with preservatives. “Jack Black cosmetics for men, one of the lines I brought in, are selling off the shelf,” Magalhaes said. The retail part of Qua also sells clothing and jewelry. “A lot of the retail is bought by people here in town for businesses or a convention,’’ she said.

More star chefs join Revel
Chef Alain Allegretti will bring the flavors of the Italian and French rivieras to Azure by Allegretti in Revel. NOAH FECKS By WILLIAM SOKOLIC

LUGO CAFFE
Famed Washington D.C. restauranteur Robert Wiedmaier had a lot of “aha” Atlantic City moments that led to his decision to join Revel. His visit to restaurants at Borgata and elsewhere, for one. “I was amazed how busy many of them were despite the recession,” said Wiedmaier, a master of Belgian cuisine. He will open Mussel Bar, a pub based in part on his restaurant of the same name in Bethesda, Md. Another was that Revel CEO Kevin DeSanctis was not selling his resort as a casino. “The first thing you see is not the casino. I liked that,” said Wiedmaier, one of two more star names added to the growing roster of chefs for the $2.4 billion casino opening this spring. The flavors of the Italian and French rivieras will arrive with chef Alain Allegretti. Azure by Allegretti combines Allegretti’s influences — most notably his Italian grandmother — and his experiences at his
Revel has borrowed from New York City for its dining roster once again. Lugo Caffé, the second version of the popular New York City brasserie, promises a bustling atmosphere reminiscent of Italy’s grand cafés, with views of the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop. Chef Stefano Chiaruga will serve up homemade pastas, Neapolitan-style brick-oven pizza and mozzarella made on-site.
New York City restaurant, La Promenade des Anglais. Wiedmaier’s inspiration for Mussel Bar draws from an Old-World Belgian roadhouse serving bière, moules and frites, and other Flemish favorites. “The concept derived from places I went to in Brussels, eating mussels, drinking beer and listening to rock ‘n’ roll to all hours. All the cooks would go late at night,” he said. The name is also catchy, he said. Wiedmaier hopes this will be the first of multiple locations for the concept. And the idea of live music appealed to his senses. “We want the music we have to coincide
with the music at one of the three performing venues in Revel. We are just outside the 5,000-seat arena,” the chef said. Still another element Wiedmaier will bring to the table is the design of the kitchen — so diners can observe the dishes being prepared. “The one in Atlantic City will be something more than just serving food. I wanted theater with a kitchen as an open kitchen,” he said. While Mussel Bar will have a menu that features a lot of dishes comprised of mussels, the offerings will extend beyond the shellfish, right down to Belgian waffles and crepes for dessert. A selection of more than 150 Belgian
and domestic beers will also be served with the 23 on tap. “It’s good, reasonable everyday food,” said Wiedmaier, who also operates Marcel’s, which was recently named on Zagat’s prestigious list of America’s Top Restaurants of 2012; Brasserie Beck in Washington, D.C.; and Brabo, Brabo Tasting Room and The Butcher’s Block, A Market in Alexandria, Va. Features at Azure will include handmade pastas, Mediterranean whole fish, a raw bar and composed dishes from the land and sea. Diners can enjoy a peek behind the scenes with an open-exhibition kitchen or retreat to a sunset-inspired private dining room for a cozier experience. “Revel is such an inspiring addition to Atlantic City,” said executive chef Alain Allegretti, a native of Nice. “I am excited to bring some of my favorite flavors from the Riviera and present them with a fresh take in this dramatic oceanfront setting. “Azure is poised to provide a backdrop for a romantic date, a celebratory dinner or a fun night out with friends.”
Lighthouse inspires young artists By WILLIAM SOKOLIC Courier-Post Staff
Lighthouses have long been the source of visual arts, from drawing, painting and photography. They make for good images. To highlight the relationship, Absecon Lighthouse is once again offering “Kids Light up the Arts.” It’s an effort to promote the visual — and performing — arts for children, through special twohour classes Sundays through early March. The lighthouse will collaborate with local artists, performers and crafters to educate and encourage kids to create their own works of art, culminating with an art show where students will display their work. Classes will be featured in theater and puppetry, dance, painting, literature, photography and other disciplines. Children should wear comfortable clothing. “We do have some significant changes every year, including some of the artistic disciplines and teaching artists,” said Stephanie Carr, director of educational programs for the Absecon Lighthouse. “This year, we have again focused on balancing between visual and performing arts. Of course, even when we are exploring the same disciplines, each class will be unique.” This year, Erin Esposito, from Surflight Theatre Company, will participate in both the dance and theater workshops. Local artist Caz Boyd with the South Jersey Cultural Alliance will again participate while local muralist Linda Wexler will be a first-time participant. Wexler created the mural at Absecon Lighthouse leading from the museum to the tower, and she will be discussing murals and working on a project of painting tiles with the kids. “We originally developed this program in an effort to promote the visual and performing arts to children upon hearing news that many schools were cutting out or minimizing arts programming,” Carr said. “We imagined this would be a fun way to explore different avenues. It offers an opportunity for kids to try something new while hopefully, giving them a new appreciation for the arts, locally and globally.” An art exhibit and reception will be held at the Lighthouse at the end of the program on March 11. “We encourage everyone to join us to admire the creativity of our students,” Carr said.
IF YOU GO ‘Kids Light Up The Arts’ runs Sundays through March 11 at the Absecon Lighthouse, 31 S. Rhode Island Ave. Classes run from 1 to 3 p.m. Classes are $15 per participant and $95 for the complete series, and include all materials, supplies and instruction. To reserve a spot, call (609) 449-1360. For additional information and each week’s schedule, visit www.abseconlighthouse.org

Gambler’s Classic races on
Midget racing marks 10th year at Boardwalk Hall Midget racing returns for its milestone 10th year Friday and Saturday at Boardwalk Hall. The Gambler’s Classic brings the return of the 2005 three quarter midget winner, Jeff Heotzler of Wallkill, N.Y., among other past winners. The TQ, as they are known, join three other classes of race cars: the dirt 600cc Micro-Sprints, the Slingshots and the Champ Karts. Upward of 200 teams are expected to be vying for starting berths in the four feature races. With Heotzler, eight of the nine previous Gambler’s Classic winners are planning to compete in TQ. Joey Payne (2004, 2007); Lou Cicconi Jr. (2006, 2010); and Ted Christopher (2009, 2011) are two-time winners. Mike Tidaback (2008), like Heotzler, is a solo Gamblers winner Chris Daley and Norman Hynes,
two past winners of the Champ Kart classes, are among the heavy favorites to win again. Daley, of Pleasant Valley, N.Y., won the 2008 Champ Kart Indoor Race and was a near winner of the 2006 and 2009. Hynes of Lithium, Md., is the defending champion. When he crossed the finish line under the checkered flag, he called the victory “among my biggest.” Vintage TQ midgets have been added to the weekend of events. Cars will be displayed on Friday throughout Boardwalk’s Hall spectator concourse. A warm-up session is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, cars will be displayed and drivers will be available for autographs and photos during the interactive evening Fanfest session prior to the beginning of the racing program.
IF YOU GO The Gambler’s Classic will be held Friday and Saturday at Boardwalk Hall, Mississippi Avenue and the Boardwalk. Friday night start time is 7:30 p.m. Saturday night is 7 p.m. Tickets are $17 to $30 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under and can be purchased at Ticketmaster outlets, www.ticketmaster.com and the Boardwalk Hall box office. Win a BMW Super Bowl Sunday means more than just the game between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. It’s also the first day of the100,000 Ultimate Drive Sweepstakes at Golden Nugget Atlantic City. At stake is not the Lombardi Trophy, but a new Series 5 BMW. Each day from Feb. 5 to 17, the casino will hold daily drawings each hour from 4 to 8 p.m. Each 25 tier points earned gambling adds one entry into these daily drawings. “This is based on points earned throughout the day,” said Tom Pohlman, vice president and general manager of the casino hotel. The more points, the more eligible tickets, the better the chance for winning the car. Those selected will win up to $1,000 in free play and become eligible for the finale. On Feb. 18, each hour from 2 to 9 p.m., four winners from the prior weeks will be selected to win from $500 to $2,000 in free slot play and a key. One key opens the door to the BMW, Pohlman said. “We do these promotions for twofold reasons,” Pohlman said. “Once on property, we get you to stay here longer as opposed to going to another property. And it gives people a chance to visit, to see what is going on. You’d be surprised by the volume and response to the renovations occurring here. Trump Marina depressed longtime customers. We’re starting to see a lot come back. They enjoy the changes and transformation.”

Kick back at Rush Lounge, LIVE Bar When the Golden Nugget took over Trump Marina last year, management promised to create a destination that went beyond slot machines and table games. To that end, the casino hotel has introduced two very different entertainment venues: LIVE Bar and Rush Lounge. LIVE, located in what used to be The Wave in Trump Marina, features live bands Thursday through Saturday night. “The room is completely different the minute you walk in,” said Tom Pohlman, vice president and general manager of the casino hotel. The lighting is unique. It’s a hip atmosphere with more than 10 flat-screen televisions with appeal for all demographics, Pohlman said. The bar offers specialty drinks such as the “Golden” Margarita, Pineapple Cosmo and the
Luscious Lemon Drop. There’s bottle and table service, too. Drinks are half-price from 9 to 11 p.m. from Thursdays to Saturdays. “We’ve had a great response. We saw an influx of sales for the half-price drinks,” Pohlman said. Rush has live music and drinks as well, but that’s the only similarity to LIVE. Situated across from the front desk off the hotel lobby in what was a slot area, the lounge offers guests a place to relax, enjoy a cocktail, gamble on bar-top video poker games, and watch sports on flat-screen TVs. With nightly entertainment, Rush — a larger version of a similar lounge in Las Vegas — serves as a great spot to mix and mingle. “The name is the antithesis of what it is,” Pohlman said. “Rush is a more relaxing environment. The entertainment is such that it’s

easier to have conversations.” Gem-inspired drinks include Diamond, Ruby and Emerald cocktails. Bottle service and cocktail shakers for parties of four or more are also available. “In this economy, visitors look for other things to do. Entertainment, shopping, restaurants and spas identify you as a resort destination as opposed to a casino destination,” Pohlman said.
The LIVE Bar and Rush Lounge are on the lobby floor of Golden Nugget Atlantic City, Huron Avenue and Brigantine Boulevard. LIVE opens 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Rush is open 24/7. There are no reservations or cover charge.

Harrah’s Chester turns 5 Mia’s Sunday brunch proves popular Find new items on the menu every week
Last weekend, Harrah’s Chester, Pa., casino celebrated its 5-year anniversary. PHOTO PROVIDED
Atlantic City’s sister casino marks milestone The Eastern Division of Caesars Entertainment includes four casinos in Atlantic City: Harrah’s Resort, Bally’s, Showboat and Caesars. But there’s a fifth casino in the stable. Harrah’s Chester celebrated its fifth anniversary last weekend as one of four casinos in the Philadelphia area. “This is a momentous occasion for us and it could not have happened without the support of both the Chester and Philadelphia communities,” said Ron Baumann, senior vice president and general manager of Harrah’s Chester. “Our goal when we started was to provide an experience like no other. We wanted to offer the region premier entertainment, top-notch harness racing, culinary delights, unmatchable gaming, and to, most importantly, make each guest feel welcomed. And as we celebrate this milestone, I can truly say we’ve accomplished beyond our expectations.” Since it opened, Harrah’s Chester has added five eateries, including the Temptations Buffet and The Cove at River View, and a 100,000-square-foot gaming floor that houses 2,900 slot and video poker machines. The casino also features nightlife venues like the C-Bar and the Copper Mug. In addition to a slot promotion, last weekend included a fireworks display, slot tournament and two nights of entertainment with Sylvia Browne and Michael Bol-
ton, who also played Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City. The tandem bookings speak to the relationship between Harrah’s Chester and its larger Atlantic City counterpart. It is the only property in Pennsylvania to be owned by a company with locations in Atlantic City. “Our relationship with Atlantic City is one of our competitive advantages in Philadelphia,” said Joel Freedman, director of marketing for Harrah’s Chester. “It is part of our Total Rewards member program to offer customers access to great value in Atlantic City. Whether it is a free room, complimentary meals, spa treatments, you name it, we can offer it. Customers can use their points earned in Harrah's Chester for anything their heart desires in any of our nationwide casinos and hotels, that includes Atlantic City.”
IF YOU GO Harrah’s Chester is at 777 Harrah’s Blvd., Chester, Pa. For more information, call (800) 480-8020 or visit www.harrahschester.com
When Caesars Atlantic City moved the Sunday brunch from Nero’s to Mia’s to make way for Atlantic Grill, the shift was not necessarily a permanent one. The majority of the staff are from Nero’s. Turns out that picking Mia’s as the location proved a better choice. The restaurant, though smaller, provides far more visibility since it’s situated in the hotel lobby. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to promote both businesses – Mia and the brunch. It’s the first thing you see coming from the garage. It’s a win-win situation,” said chef Matt Ryan. Said Betty McHugh, food and beverage restaurant manager, “It’s proven so popular, people wait in line to come in. People come every Sunday, even if not staying at Caesars.” For those hungry for a brunch that covers all the bases, Mia’s is the place to be. The cost covers a carving, omelet, crepe and waffle station, along with seafood, bagels, Chinese and Italian food, bacon, sausage and desserts. Each week, chefs provide a new quiche selection, a new sauce for the cheese blintzes, and new recipes for home fries, omelets, pasta, seafood and Chinese delicacies. The most popular stops are the carving station and the crab legs and seafood. “People go right to it,” said John Mejlak, chef de cuisine. This past Sunday, the quiche included marinated artichoke hearts, ovencured tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. The omelet of the day was lobster, shrimp and crab with roasted peppers and Boursin cheese. The sauce for the blintzes consisted of Bailey’s Irish Cream, white chocolate and marshmallow. “We played around with orange Creamsicle, amaretto and other flavors,” said cook Matt Rubich. “It’s fun. ” Anthony Capolingua’s carving area includes prime rib, lamb chop and salmon with crab meat. Caviar and

Seafood dishes, such as shrimp scampi, are part of the brunch at Mia’s. Crepes, omelets, Chinese dishes, carving stations and desserts are also a part of the weekly feast. PHOTO PROVIDED sushi stations are adjacent. Son Ngo not only staffs the crepe and waffle station, but prepares all the desserts from danish to chocolate cake. “She’s a phenomenal chef, a gifted woman,” Ryan said. On the libation side, Mia’s has a Bloody Mary station and also serves flavored champagnes. “We did not have the Bloody Mary bar upstairs,” McHugh said. A separate menu features items such as crab legs and lobster at an additional charge.
